Also, given that original 2,906 × 2,852 pixel size, you may still be compressing the image accidentally when you save it prior to upload.. Higher resolution would be helpful here. --GRDN711 19:22, 8 October 2019 (UTC)

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks![edit]

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

Code issues in User:Beko/common.js[edit]

Hi Beko, I am a bored bot (this is kind of a computer program) that is watching the recent changes and tapping buttons like I did now.

Curious about the reason? Possibly not but I will tell you anyway:

  1. You edited User:Beko/common.js. Glad to see you coding in javascript! Have you ever considered becoming a MediaWiki hacker?
  2. Though, that change appears to introduce 1 new jshint issue — the page's status is now having ERRORS. Note that invalid or ambiguous code often has unwanted side effects like breaking other tools for you. If you cannot find out how to fix it, I suggest blanking the page for now.
  3. To help you understanding where the issues are, I have aggregated a report here and now. If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask users experienced in javascript writing for help. But do not ask the bot's operators (chronically overwrought) unless you suspect an error of mine. If you prefer not getting spammed by me, you can opt-out reports by adding {{ValidationOptOut|type=all}} to your user page or cmb-opt-out anywhere on your your global user page on Meta. Good luck at Wikimedia Commons and happy hacking!

Your best shot 2019[edit]

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

It's early 2020, which means it's time again to look back at photographs taken over the course of the past 12 months. As always, I'm curious – what would you consider your best shot of 2019 and why? I invite you to share your image and your thoughts in order to provide others with the opportunity to celebrate, learn, and enjoy:

Your best shot 2019

Thanks for all your effort in sharing your vision of the world with others under a free license!

Hi Beko, I do not believe that the plant on File:Polemoniaceae in Tsaghkadzor.jpg is from the Polemoniaceae. Someone (an IP) wrote that this is supposed to be Mertensia virginica, but I do not believe that either, because the plant is so hairy. Nevertheless I assume that it is from the Boraginaceae family, possibly genus Symphytum, but I am not sure. Symphytum caucasicum looks similar, but I feel that this assignment would be much too speculative for me. I am sorry that I am unable to positively identify this plant because I have got no literature about the Armenian flora. With best regards --Robert Flogaus-Faust (talk) 22:02, 20 January 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello Beko,

Please advise how you acquired copyright of this photo. According to the exif metadata, it is from Facebook. We have received an email at OTRS contending that they are copyright owner and do not consent to the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International license for Wikimedia Commons.  JGHowes  talk 00:33, 7 March 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello JGHowes,
In July of 2019 Wikimedia Armenia, in agreement with the National Assembly of Armenia, within the framework of the GLAM program, started to take photos of the new elected Members of the Armenian National Assembly. I personally photographed most of the deputies. All lawmakers were aware that they were being photographed for Wikipedia.
There is a template on each page of the photos in Commons, indicating that the file was supported by Wikimedia Armenia. Most of those photos you can find here.
All photos are taken with my camera Canon EOS REBEL T2i, which can be checked with the camera's serial number (2323311463).
If the person does not want his or her photo to be in Wikipedia, we can remove it from the article, but the copyright does not belong to him. I'd be happy to answer any of your questions.--Beko (talk) 08:30, 7 March 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Pictogram reply.svg Beko, thanks very much for your reply, verifying that the photo is indeed yours. As it is properly licensed and in use at Commons, there is no need to remove it. I've added a {{Personality}} template, which is recommended practice for photos of living people, as explained at Commons:Photographs of identifiable people. Have a good day!  JGHowes  talk 13:25, 7 March 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I’d like to invite you to our group’s first Virtual Meeting on Saturday, May 30, 2020. The meeting will serve as an opportunity to get to know each other better, share learnings, and connect in times of the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Please take a look at the meeting page and add your name to the list of participants if you’re planning to attend.

Hope to see you in a week! All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 16:47, 23 May 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Commons Photographers User Group: Meeting on September 26 and other stuff[edit]

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I've got a quick update for you, containing three items:

  • I’d like to invite you to our group’s second Virtual Meeting on Saturday, September 26, 2020. As last time, this meeting will serve as an opportunity to get to know each other better, share learnings, and connect in times of the global COVID-19 pandemic. If you'd like to present, please add your name and the proposed topic to the list on the talk page.
  • Also, I'd like to start a conversation about how we should be sharing responsibility for the user group going forward. I'd love to get some help when it comes to organizing things and I'm convinced that we can achieve more if a couple of people helped with coordinating stuff.
  • Finally, the Wikimedia Foundation has asked me to spread the word about their latest survey: Universal Code of Conduct Survey. The goal is to create a safer environment on Wikimedia projects and the Foundation gathers feedback prior to coming up with a first draft.

Hope to see you at the Zoom meeting in September!

All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 18:50, 15 August 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Next Commons Photographers meeting featuring large format photographer Ben Horne[edit]

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I'm happy to invite you to our next virtual meeting on Saturday, March 20, at the usual time. As I mentioned during our last get-together, I'd like to invite external guests every now and then, given that it seems good to expand our view and learn something from someone outside our community.

Our first external guest, Ben Horne, will talk about large format wilderness photography, followed by a question-and-answer session. Ben is maybe one of best known contemporary large format photographers in the United States. On his excursions to national parks, he shoots 8×10 film and talks about his adventures on his YouTube channel which has attracted more than 48,000 followers so far. He is YouTube's first, and longest active landscape photography vlogger and I'm thrilled that he has agreed to join our next meeting and talk about his experiences.

If you're interested in joining this meeting, please sign up on the page below:

Also, don't forget to post your question(s) prior to the meeting on the following page in order to ensure a good and fruitful question-and-answer session:

I'm very much looking forward to this event and I hope you'll be able to join.

All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 21:39, 15 February 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The photograph IS of Eben Byers in 1931 - it is not a photograph of a 'match factory worker with phossy jaw', they are two totally different things. The photograph illustrates the artificial jaw that was made for Byers by surgeons after his own fell off. (This mistake is causing massive problems all the over the Internet.) Something went wrong with the linking of the Armenian monument lists (by this I mean the entry "List of the monuments in Armenia"). Unfortunately, I could not fix the linking problem. Maybe you? Many greetings, Mosbatho (talk) 15:58, 29 August 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi Mosbatho, thank you for the warning. Mistakes were in the Wikipedia language code, and I corrected it.--Beko (talk) 07:47, 30 August 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you! I very much appreciate your work on the WLM project. Best regards, Mosbatho (talk) 21:51, 30 August 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Question from the CPUG Board[edit]

Dear user group member,

I'm writing you to today on behalf of the board of the Commons Photographers User Group. The past year has been a busy one for us. In 2022, we've had more activities than ever before in the history of our group and you'll find an overview on our group's page.

With that being said, 2022 was also a year of learning for the current board members. Most of us hadn't been involved in running the Photographers User Group and we spent quite some time on getting used to our new roles. We all feel it was a steep learning curve.

That's why, at our last board meeting, we decided to ask our members whether they'd be ok with us serving for another year. Extending our board duties to the end of 2023 would allow us to continue the work we've started this year, and to benefit from the knowledge we've built over the past twelve months.

However, in the end, it's up to you and the other members of our group to decide whether such an extension of our board term should be granted. I invite you to voice your opinion on this page:

Commons:Commons Photographers User Group/Board Elections 2022

We'll gather feedback until December 27, and we'll keep you in the loop about the outcomes of this process.

Thanks so much for your ongoing support of our group. I wish you, your family, and your friends all the best.

Most memorable shot 2022 / Wikimania 2023[edit]

I invite you to share a picture that is particular meaningful to you and to describe why that's the case. Also, as Wikimania 2023 will be here before we know it (August 16 to 19), please consider adding your thoughts on our planning page, where we gather ideas for how we can make Commons photography more visible than in the years before.

All the best to you, your family, and friends! --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 21:01, 2 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
