Mongolia location map[edit]

I think it's quite unfriendly to overwrite my map of Mongolia without telling me anything and especially when there is no need for it. I would prefer you revert your edit and upload your image with another name. --NNW (talk) 15:12, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

File:Mongolia, Sukhbaatar Mormon's temple.JPG[edit]

Please note that this file is named incorrectly, as the building depicted is a meetinghouse, which is the term Mormons use for the building where local congregations meet for weekly worship services. A meetinghouse differs from a temple, which is reserved for special forms of worship. There currently is not a temple in Mongolia - see List of temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for a complete list of the (currently 128) temples in operation worldwide. -- 208.81.184.4 15:51, 9 January 2009 (UTC)

Hello, Bogomolov.PL!

Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Betula spp.[edit]

Hi Bogomolov - Betula rezniczenkoana is a synonym of Betula microphylla. See also e.g. here. The EPPO document you cite is not supported by other botanists. As an aside, very nice photos, thanks for adding them! - MPF (talk) 10:14, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

Thanks! I'll do what I can, but images are often not easy to find (particularly as a lot of the time I am using textbook references, not internet sources). Excellent that you are adding photos of Mongolian flora, as it is still an area that is poorly covered in Commons. Would you be able to get photos of Picea obovata, or even better, of Abies sibirica? As you can see, there are no photos at all of natural trees of the latter! - MPF (talk) 11:11, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

PNG 24 bity?[edit]

Pozdrawiam--lonio17 (talk) 14:33, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

File correction[edit]

Hello. Please, correct file Russia_Moscow_oblast_locator_map.svg mistake: Sheremetievo airport is a part of the Moscow Oblastj and it isn't a part of Moscow city. Moscow's mayor Luzhkov in 1995 illegally declared the airport a city territory.

Bogomolov.PL (talk) 22:40, 23 September 2010 (UTC)

belarus[edit]

Hello. I saw your map [1] , and was wondering if you could give me a link that has the official data? Could you give me it? (Lilic (talk) 07:15, 26 December 2010 (UTC)).

Thanks. You too. Tell me also, does the site have a map that says what which polygon is? I'm not so good with russian... serbian unfortunately isn't close enough :P and I'm a bit busy before I can go to that. I was hoping to make an ethnic map of belarus according to the smallest units. :)
Also, a suggestion on the proportional circle map... when I had cartography at my uni. the professor said that the units should be rounded off to nice numbers. So, for example, 20,000 instead of 20,456. Just a suggestion on how to perhaps improve it. :) (Lilic (talk) 18:50, 27 December 2010 (UTC)).
I'll see if I can find a map that I once made. It had these proportional circles. I just dunno if I still have it - but the way it was made might interest you.
Do you think you can make an ethnic map of all the groups in belarus? I suspect that the belarussians are not a majority everywhere... but I dunno. (Lilic (talk) 22:08, 30 December 2010 (UTC)).
Could you make an ethnic map of belarus for more than just poles? - something like this : [2] - I think there are not that many groups - but perhaps it might be possible for you to make such a map for belarus? I think it would look interesting.
Here's what I was talking about - just something to keep in mind - maybe it might be useful for the future. [3] [4] [5] Notice how in the legend the numbers are rounded off. (Lilic (talk) 23:01, 31 December 2010 (UTC)).
Sorry for the late reply. Been having computer problems.
The reason why the legend has cut off intervals is because it is a legend. It is not supposed to show exact numbers - just like 30-50% category does not show every value. Here's a similar example... I made a density map - [6] - and I got points taken off because the legend did not have exact numbers. Circle size should have been some even number, like say 2000 or 4000.
I have an ethnic map of belarus. I'll see if I can upload it - it's on my wall, so I probably have to take a picture. But there is for example this map - [7] I suspect that it was drawn by settlements, or some approximation of settlements. Same for this map - [8] . But I don't think that there are such small census areas? See this map of romania - [9] there are these very small units. Does belarus have such very small units? (Lilic (talk) 05:57, 6 January 2011 (UTC)).

Zorog (talk) 09:59, 25 February 2012 (UTC)

53' 58" E. Bogomolov.PL (talk) 21:04, 25 February 2012 (UTC)
Zorog (talk) 19:08, 26 February 2012 (UTC)

Color and brightness correction[edit]

File:Januš Radzivił. --Kazimier Lachnovič (talk) 16:02, 16 May 2012 (UTC)

--Kazimier Lachnovič (talk) 18:24, 16 May 2012 (UTC)
File:Kryštap Radzivił. --Kazimier Lachnovič (talk) 19:38, 16 May 2012 (UTC)
--Kazimier Lachnovič (talk) 20:09, 16 May 2012 (UTC)
--Kazimier Lachnovič (talk) 22:13, 16 May 2012 (UTC)
--Kazimier Lachnovič (talk) 22:59, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
--Kazimier Lachnovič (talk) 23:15, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
--Kazimier Lachnovič (talk) 09:57, 18 May 2012 (UTC)
--Kazimier Lachnovič (talk) 22:06, 29 May 2012 (UTC)

Witam. Postcard BNR Herb-VKL.png

Агалогично с картинкой File:Postcard of BNR.jpg.

Re: File:Phrynocephalus versicolor distribution.png[edit]

Hi Bogomolov.PL

I'm not exactly sure if I understood you: Yes, you're right, the map is based on IUCN's spatial data; The Reptile Database (usually more precise and up-to-date) includes also parts of Russia as range of P. versicolor. But what are the advantages of jpeg? The used colour space is rather small, so the lossy compression would lead to more blurry files without a real benefit. svg would be great, but the export filter of QGIS is rotten...

Greetings, Rbrausse (talk) 20:06, 9 January 2013 (UTC)

RDB (imo an authoritative source for reptiles) lists a larger range, but take a look at the paragraph "Comment": The taxonomy of this species is controversially discussed. The data quality of IUCN is sometimes (often?) not the best (just count the red question marks :)), but they released shape files with a usable license. My maps are not nice, but (according to one of the herpetology guys at fr.WP) good enough. The data source I use is clearly stated on the description page: Just remove the map if IUCN is out-dated or incorrect - I don't mind, really ;)
jpeg as format has two issues:
  • I'm lazy as hell: QGIS supports only png and converting would be one step more
  • I loathe compression artefacts
sooner or later I will take a look at the dozen or so available svg plug-ins for QGIS - range and borders as vectors are the way to create maps and will greatly improve the post-processing.
cheers, Rbrausse (talk) 20:53, 9 January 2013 (UTC)
regarding png/jpeg: I think we can agree that we disagree...
as a full disclosure: Personally I'm not a biologist, playing around with geoinformation systems is fun and the French herpetology project liked my maps. IUCN distribution data includes often not the newest research results, but is at the moment the fastest way to create (mostly) reliable range maps.
Rbrausse (talk) 21:58, 9 January 2013 (UTC)
PS both RDB (Peter Uetz as maintainer will reply) and IUCN (will be forwarded to Philip Bowles, Chair of the Snake and Lizard Red List Authority) welcome corrections and annotations, especially Peter is really responsive Rbrausse (talk) 22:26, 9 January 2013 (UTC)
last time assessed in 2008... no wonder your corrections aren't included, unfortunately IUCN is underfunded AND bureaucratic. All the best for your report, Rbrausse (talk) 22:51, 9 January 2013 (UTC)

Emblems of Tuva[edit]

I don't know if you know these to emblems yet. You wrote [12] that there was a border change in 1932 and uploaded that map. What do you think - should these emblems show the pre- or post-1932 border. The maps in source files are not really detailed.--Antemister (talk) 21:36, 9 October 2013 (UTC)

So I'm sure of the Commons emblems inaccuracy as even if boundaries at an original emblem are not correct we can not "update" them. Bogomolov.PL (talk) 23:26, 9 October 2013 (UTC)

I compared several source images, and as their quality is usually rather low I am not sure which version of the borders is the one which fits more to the original images. What do you think?--Antemister (talk) 09:04, 10 October 2013 (UTC)
I've mentioned in the Tuvan People's Republic discussion page that after 1932 Tuvan-Mongolian border treaty Tuvan side continued cartographically claim Darkhad Valley. You can find both extremely SW Tuvan territory tip (it was annexed in 1932) and Darkhad Valley at Tuvan national emblem and post marks and banknotes. But we need just make boundaries the same as in relevant period Tuvan reliable sources, I see.
Look at File:Coat of arms of Tuvan People's Republic (1943-1944).jpg - you can find Mongun-Tayginsky District (annexed in 1932) and a convexity at Eastern border which corresponds the Darkhad Valley (lost in 1932 or in 1925) . Bogomolov.PL (talk) 10:52, 10 October 2013 (UTC)
OK, it seems that the pre-1932 borders should remain on the emblems. Another question is the that "tuvan peninsula" russian territory you mention in 2) of [[15]] Is a source that that area was annexed by the Soviet Union? In my opinion, that map does not really imply this.--Antemister (talk) 13:32, 10 October 2013 (UTC)
Boundaries at the emblem are the maximum extend of the Tuvan territory and Tuvan claims: when Mongun-Tayginsky District was annexed by Tuva the Darkhad Valley was Mongolian not Tuvan, by at the national emblem the national boundaries are including both Mongun-Tayginsky District (in Tuva since 1932) and Darkhad Valley (lost in 1925 or 1932). The same shape at Tuvan banknotes, you see. That is why I'm sure we definitely need this 'combined' boundaries shape at the national emblem.
Upper Us River peninsula is not present at this emblem and this. At the Soviet map of 1928 File:Атлас Союза Советских Социалистических Республик 1928 - карта СССР (NW).jpg we can see pre-1932 boundaries with Darkhad Valley in Tuva but Us peninsula out (in Soviet Union), Mongun-Tayginsky District is in Mongolia. But at the Soviet 1939 map Darkhad Valley is Mongolian, Mongun-Tayginsky District is Tuvan, Us peninsula is Soviet. Bogomolov.PL (talk) 14:47, 10 October 2013 (UTC)

Pozdrawiam Airam57 (talk) 14:28, 10 January 2014 (UTC)

Face-smile.svg.
--PereslavlFoto (talk) 17:49, 14 March 2014 (UTC)
Bogomolov.PL (talk) 18:08, 14 March 2014 (UTC)

File:Baku in 1870.JPG[edit]

I've just realized that you upload a black and white version of this file under the same name (one year ago). It's not very respectful of the person (me) who chose to upload the original sepia version. Therefore could you upload the B&W version under another file name and do the necessary to keep the sepia version available under the original name. Thank you for your comprehension. --TwoWings * to talk or not to talk... 07:32, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

I photographed the picture myself as it was exhibited within the Maiden Tower. The print exhibited there is a sepia print. So don't tell me the original is in B&W ! This is absolutely not a question of white balance ! The original print (at least the one exhibited there) is sepia. --TwoWings * to talk or not to talk... 15:59, 26 June 2014 (UTC)
You seem to misunderstand me. There might be some "over-orange" colour in my reproduction due to my white balance when I took the photograph myself. But the print exhibited on a wall of the Maiden Tower was sepia, not B&W ! I clearly remember that. How am I suppose to explain that again so that you'll understand that ?! Would you claim my eyes had a bad white balance too so that I saw it in sepia ?!!! --TwoWings * to talk or not to talk... 18:30, 26 June 2014 (UTC)
Well I explained it several times ! Anyway...
The "new" (3rd) version is not really sepia, is it ? You may think I'm crazy but I remember it was quite "brown" (therefore closer to the first "orange" version than the current B&W version). Maybe more like this one. --TwoWings * to talk or not to talk... 21:57, 26 June 2014 (UTC)
In a way, it could be a good idea to keep it in B&W since sepia is a print process of a B&W film. But on the other hand, even B&W prints can have different process and therefore different B&W. That's why I wanted to keep close to the print I saw and photographed. In that case, my original "orange sepia" file is closer to the exhibited print than a B&W version. Why couldn't we keep my original upload (with its imperfections) and propose your B&W version under another title ? In that case (that's actually what I asked you first), any user would have the choice of two different processes.
NB : I know the Lybian example was not an "original sepia", I just wanted to find a file that would look close to my memory of the "right" colour I saw there. But it's a few years ago so how could I be sure ? that's exactly why my idea of 2 different files might be a better idea than trying to find the "correct sepia" ! --TwoWings * to talk or not to talk... 05:37, 27 June 2014 (UTC)
"I'm not sure this 'orange' version encyclopedic values for the Wikipedia are better then b&w version" > well it's not really up to you to decide that, is it ? As I said already, it would have been better it you initially proposed an alternative version of this file under another name (as, for instance, Calibas did it with this picture of mine). We would have not discussed like that for "nothing" !
"We are storing imagery at Commons with the purpose to use these files in Wikipedia, isn't it?" > well nope. At least not only, because it would mean that any picture that is not used in a WP article may be deleted. No, Commons has the purpose to propose a variety of files about many subjects, therefore that could be used elsewhere than WP and other Wikimedia projects.
"Your reaction was emotional" > a little bit but not only. I think it is quite inconvenient to upload a file over another file when there's such a change in its correction. If you kept the sepia process with just an attenuation of the "orange" problem of white balance, I may have understood. But no, you proposed a completely different process, therefore you completely despised the original print exhibited in the Maiden Tower.
Why is it so difficult for you to understand that it may be better to have an alternative B&W file instead of what you've done ? (NB : Indeed I've never said the B&W version was useless, I actually think it's a good idea, but I think it's normal to keep the "original" sepia version, even with a slight edit to improve the orange problem). --TwoWings * to talk or not to talk... 20:21, 27 June 2014 (UTC)

I knew you would say that (that I'm not the author compare to the example I gave you). But you gave the answer of your remark yourself : the picture of Baku has an author too and he probably decided to have a sepia processed print, so who are we to determine a B&W version is better ? Proposing an alternative B&W version under another name (a solution that you seem not to understand !) is a far better idea because you keep a sepia "original" version of it, that you may also correct slightly for the over-orange balance. Is that so hard to understand ? --TwoWings * to talk or not to talk... 12:04, 28 June 2014 (UTC)
I'm sorry, I haven't realized that the 3rd version you uploaded was sepia. I think it could be a little more "brown/orange" to be closer to the print as I remember it, but it's already better than the B&W version. Thanks for that. --TwoWings * to talk or not to talk... 13:59, 28 June 2014 (UTC)

"But 'sepia' was not an artistic trick, but this was a routine technology with the aim to protect paper photocopy from the time destroying" > I know, but we don't care about that ! It doesn't change what I already wrote : a sepia process had been used to the copy exhibited in the Maiden Tower so we should respect it - which doesn't prevent us to propose an alternative B&W file under a second name. Isn't it simple ? --TwoWings * to talk or not to talk... 07:04, 30 June 2014 (UTC)
I don't think you or me can judge it the photographer can be called an artist. We don't care about that, it's the author anyway, just I'm the author (and not the artist) of the picture of the rusty car of Oradour we discussed about. And as you said for it, it was normal that a corrected version of it was uploaded under another file name. Same logic here.
Now that you found the postcard on the Internet, shouldn't we use this copy instead ? At least it gives us the tone of the sepia used for this processing. --TwoWings * to talk or not to talk... 16:32, 1 July 2014 (UTC)
You know. From the beginning, you answered me with despise. I kept being calm but I'm starting to be very sick of it ! I know paper is ageing, you really think I'm dumb ? But I'm also quite sure the print I've seen in the Maiden Tower was a sepia print and not (or not only) a question of aging.
As for Papamoskich, as I said, we don't care if he's an artist/photographer or not. He's the author, that's all what counts.
Anyway, this talk is starting to be really stupid and useless. Let's keep your second corrected version and let's move on. Regards. --TwoWings * to talk or not to talk... 20:06, 1 July 2014 (UTC)
Whatever. I'm getting bored. We seem unable to understant each other. --TwoWings * to talk or not to talk... 13:46, 4 July 2014 (UTC)

GDP per capita of Transcaucasia[edit]

Hi,

you can do a favour for me and update this GDP curve till end of 2014: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Transcaucasia_GDP_PPP_in_constant_prices_per_capita.png

It is exactly what I need  :)

Useful were also af future estimation, e.g. with dotted lines. I can promise you: Highly likely high ranking NATO members would see your graph. Or tell me simply, where I can find out the data "GDP per capita (PPP, 2005 constant prices, US$)" that fit to your curve. The data I found are real prices in $ and do not fit to your graph.

Perhaps we can discuss it: falk.oberdorf@shape.nato.int

Thanks,

  • Here are data (GDP etc.) In April will be first estimation for 2014 and will be possible to correct image with most recent data. Bogomolov.PL (talk) 15:17, 6 January 2015 (UTC)

Hi, please do not turn this image on its head. It's not an orthonormal satellite picture that needs to be north-south oriented, but an shot taken by hand at a significant vertical angle. It looks really weird when oriented the wrong way (the shape of the mountains makes no sense). Thanks! --Latebird (talk) 10:31, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

question about Belarus stuff[edit]

Hello. I talked to you some time ago. Tell me, could you give me a link that has boundaries for selsoviets in Belarus? You gave a link before, but it does not work now. Kind regards, (Lilic (talk) 04:21, 7 May 2015 (UTC)).

  • Here are maps with boundaries of selsovets for every district of Belarus. Bogomolov.PL (talk) 07:25, 7 May 2015 (UTC)
A bit late, but, thank you ! (Lilic (talk) 17:23, 27 May 2015 (UTC)).
Hi, and first of all s'novim godom/ have a good new year.
I did some digging and was aware of the link that you linked to me. Thanks for it nonetheless. When I first saw it it had 70% of the selsoviets. Do you know if that link will eventually have 100% of them? Are they working on adding the remaining ones? (Lilic (talk) 00:32, 3 January 2016 (UTC)).
I hope it will be completed, but when? And some common boundaries were not verified and are so called 'spaghetti'. Bogomolov.PL (talk) 00:46, 3 January 2016 (UTC)

File:Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis photo portrait.jpg[edit]

While they bring out the detail, I suspect they change the image a bit too much. It changes what appears to be a black-haired man in a dark suit to a grey-haired man in a grey suit - the effect is visually appealing, but I don't think it's accurate. Also, I had cleaned up the edges and scratches a lot before the change. =) Adam Cuerden (talk) 20:42, 18 January 2016 (UTC)

I did a google image search of Ciurlionis. He clearly has darkish hair, a movie version gave him brown hair, but without contemporary depiction I'd be caution in that. A heavily damaged, including apparent water damaged copy of the same photo is a bad reference source for the photo's colours, but things like [16], [17], [18], [19], and, perhaps especially, [20] all indicate that the colours shouldn't be lightened too much. If his hair looks a different colour than every single other depiction, I'd be very uncomfortable. Adam Cuerden (talk) 13:07, 19 January 2016 (UTC)

Skelanard (talk) 09:27, 5 November 2016 (UTC)

Skelanard (talk) 09:37, 5 November 2016 (UTC)
Bogomolov.PL (talk) 09:44, 5 November 2016 (UTC)
      Skelanard (talk) 12:06, 5 November 2016 (UTC)
