Location not applicable[edit]

This category fits a lot of images. I wondered if it should be applied to all SVG images? What about Category:Drawings. We can just put the Drawings category in Location not applicable and we wouldn't need all the changes. I guess there are a few SVG images (maps maybe) that could be geocoded, but it's not very much. However it doesn't make sense to put the Location N/A cat on the Crystal images only, when all icons should be added. --Ysangkok (talk) 11:52, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

Hi, I don't think it's needed in general, but we discussed Rocket000's images on Commons talk:Geocoding. To reduce his list I added it to the images of a few categories with most of his uploads. BTW, there are some drawings that can be geocoded. -- User:Docu at 13:05, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

Category:Bundesautobahn 9[edit]

Hi Category-bot admin,

I'd like to move all "Unterrichtungstafeln" of the Category:Bundesautobahn 9 to the new category "Bundesautobahn 9 Unterrichtungstafel". In detail, this means:

 • run through all file beginning with "Unterrichtungstafel*" of the cat "Bundesautobahn 9"
 • add cat "Bundesautobahn 9 Unterrichtungstafel"
 • delete cats "Bundesautobahn 9" and "Unterrichtungstafel" if they are there

Is this a job for your bot? --84.181.213.203 18:06, 7 September 2009 (UTC)

I moved the images with "Unterrichtungs*" in the name from Category:Bundesautobahn 9 to the existing Category:Bundesautobahn 9 Unterrichtungstafel (it already had some images). As category names should be in English, you should try to find an English translation for "Unterrichtungstafel". To rename a complete category, you can make a request at User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands‎.
BTW there is a tool "cat-a-lot" that can be activated in the "gadget" tab of Special:Preferences. It might allow to do such moves too, but I didn't get it to work yet. -- User:Docu at 18:56, 7 September 2009 (UTC)

Edit summaries pointing to discussion[edit]

Could this bot be programmed to include a link to the category discussion, policy, guideline, or whatever points to the reason for this change? It'd be more helpful if there were a link to an explanation for why the category was changed, to see the reason and agree or disagree. I'm immediately curious about Category:Jury, if there's some discussion or guideline there.--Chaser (talk) 05:11, 27 November 2009 (UTC)

There was no discussion around this request. It was requested at User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands [1] and deemed non-controversial by Jacklee. Probably because it's the usual plural. The general guideline is at Commons:Categories. -- User:Docu at 05:18, 27 November 2009 (UTC)
Would it be possible to program the bot to link to the general guideline in the edit summary by default? It's not in the generic welcome msg, so I wouldn't expect everyone to know to search for it. I didn't.--Chaser (talk) 05:42, 27 November 2009 (UTC)
I will think about how to improve the edit summary, currently it's the same as the ones done by SieBot. The advantage over SieBot is that one knows who operated it. BTW when you created the category, there was a link to Commons:Categories#Creating a new category. -- User:Docu at 05:48, 27 November 2009 (UTC)
Please excuse, there was no such link as you created the category back in 2007. If you had created it recently, there would have been one. -- User:Docu at 06:00, 27 November 2009 (UTC)
Either way, we can't really count on people reading the mediawiki messages, even if we think they should. They're more likely to see an edit-summary when they're wondering (or annoyed) about a moved category than when they initially create the category.--Chaser (talk) 20:50, 27 November 2009 (UTC)
Some people don't even read messages on their talk pages. So, in general, I think it's a good thing if there is an easy way to contact the person who operated the bot. -- User:Docu at 08:31, 28 November 2009 (UTC)

Categories within coded sections[edit]

Bot needs to be more selective about what it edits. eg this edit is corrupting a bit of code rather than just changing a category. It might fix the over-categorization, but is leaving a stub of meaningless code. It needs to flag the file as having a problem that needs human intervention (perhaps the flickr tagging needs fixed) --Tony Wills (talk) 22:11, 27 November 2009 (UTC)

This bot's edit didn't really break anything, it's just that the code remains as useless as it was before. Following this discussion, bryan fixed his "Flickr upload bot" for future uploads. You might want to ask him if he plans on cleaning up old uploads. -- User:Docu at 08:31, 28 November 2009 (UTC)

24:00[edit]

Category:Time between 23:00 and 24:00 - 24:00 is not a valid time. I was going to change it to 23:59 but I know 24:00 is sometimes used instead of 0:00 (like here) so we should change Category:Time 23:00 to 23:59 instead. Right now it doesn't make sense a "23:00-24:00" category is in a "23:00-23:59" one. I noticed you were the one behind all this time stuff (good work, btw), so I figured you can fix this problem easier than me or maybe have a better idea. Rocket000 (talk) 23:34, 30 January 2010 (UTC)

I will try to fix the error on the template. If you want, you could delete the category in the meantime. Besides, it's not that likely to be used soon (it's for clocks with a 24-hour face, but without minute hand.).
I don't mind the name that much as "between 23:00 and 24:00" can be read as ">23:00 and <24:00". -- User:Docu at 05:00, 1 February 2010 (UTC)
Ok, deleted it. Another thing, would you mind having the bot create any new time categories that have files. I noticed it hasn't ran for awhile even though it says it does daily. If not, I can make them manually. It's not too much work. Thanks. Rocket000 (talk) 06:15, 1 February 2010 (UTC)

On recent change on Category:Tokyo International Airport ...[edit]

On recent change on Category:Tokyo International Airport [2], Category:Airports in Japan was replaced with Category:Airports by name. But it seems to be quite unreasonable. This airport still exist in Japan, and is shortened "HND" by IATA, or "RJTT" by ICAO. Please check replace condition of script. best regards, --Shoulder-synth (talk) 12:18, 12 February 2010 (UTC)

Yes check.svg Resolved

Hello,

Rename Category:Двигатель to Category:Automobile engines (130 entries moved, 0 to go)

All images in Category:Двигатель (means engines) should be moved to Category:Automobile engines (or better).

Rename Category:American History to Category:Stamps of the United States (175 entries moved, 4 to go)
Rename Category:US postage stamps to Category:Stamps of the United States (175 entries moved, 0 to go)

Category:American History has a misleading name. All media should be moved to Category:Stamps of the United States or the subcategories (but I know that a bot cannot decide in which category). The same holds for Category:US postage stamps...
--Euku: 19:32, 25 February 2010 (UTC)

Hi Euku,

The bot can't really decide where to move them unless it's based on some element in the current categories, part of the file name, a list of file names, or Commmons search results. You need to decide (and preferably sort out with others) first where they should go.

Just a suggestion about:

Rename Category:Двигатель to Category:Automobile engines (130 entries moved, 0 to go)

How about a new category "engine schemes"? It doesn't seem to be limited to automobiles. As all are plans and schemes, maybe this information could be kept.

For the stamps, please check with the uploader what he thinks of it. For him it might be easy to sort them into the current subcategories of Category:Stamps of the United States. One might want to create category like "US Civil War in stamps of the United States". If it is ok with him, I can move all from "US postage stamps" "Stamps of the United States". It might be easier to sort them from the current "US postage stamps" category though. -- User:Docu at 20:10, 25 February 2010 (UTC)

Yes, Category:Engine schemes is a better idea. I also asked Gwillhickers what to do. --Euku: 22:34, 25 February 2010 (UTC)
✓ Done Finally I went for Category:Engine schemas to match Category:Schemas and its other subcategories. BTW there is also Category:Jet engine schematic diagrams. Eventually all of them could probably use some more standardization. -- User:Docu at 23:04, 25 February 2010 (UTC)

Removal of Living people category[edit]

How come the bot removed the category of Living people for living people when the discussion doesn't seem over? Example Hekerui (talk) 09:16, 16 March 2010 (UTC)

This point doesn't seem to be controversial. I updated the category description accordingly. I will save the list, in case we would want to re-add them. -- User:Docu at 09:21, 16 March 2010 (UTC)
I think the proper thing would be to await the result before categories are removed. If some of the images are in that category by a mistake then they could of course be removed. Perhaps adding a link from village pump would be a good idea since it is a very used category. --MGA73 (talk) 07:37, 19 March 2010 (UTC)
I'd appreciate if you would close the discussion. BTW it was linked from VP when it was initiated. -- User:Docu at 07:48, 19 March 2010 (UTC)

It was a search for ideas. Not sure if page views (on Commons) are of much use in general. In the history tab, there is a link. Personally, I would just let it sit there as a CatCat, the files are already gone. Even if one wanted to delete it, it would get re-created soon - given its prominence at en_wiki. -- User:Docu at 10:25, 19 March 2010 (UTC)

Slashes in titles to be avoided[edit]

Hello, I saw you changing categories Winter of 2009-2010 ... changing in Category:Winter of 2009/2010. But slashes are generally used in paths, and therefore are to be avoided in titles. Can you take that into account? --Havang(nl) (talk) 09:40, 26 March 2010 (UTC)

I'm not aware of that. Where did you get this from? I think that applies to file names. There is a difference between 2009/2010 and 2009-2010. -- User:Docu at 09:53, 26 March 2010 (UTC)
Slash is forbiddden in several wikipedia's, and according to this discussion http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Village_pump/Archive/2010Feb#Characters_not_permitted_or_to_be_avoided_in_titles. the conclusion for commons is: slash is not forbidden, but to be avoided. --Havang(nl) (talk) 13:41, 26 March 2010 (UTC)
I don't think that it is a good idea to make exceptions on the gallery and file naming rules for one particular namespace. I don't think neither that we want category trees like here: Category:Rhyolite, Nevada. --Foroa (talk) 14:20, 26 March 2010 (UTC)
I agree with Foroa that subcategories like the ones in Rhyolite should be renamed. -- User:Docu at 15:10, 26 March 2010 (UTC)
Havang(nl): the thread you mention seems to be primarily about filenames and subpages. This is a MediaWiki feature available in some namespaces.
BTW it looks like you got something wrong about the French wiki you mention there. fr:AC/DC does use a "/". -- User:Docu at 15:10, 26 March 2010 (UTC)
Yes, I see. Anyhow, slashes are disencouraged, to be avoided, but not forbidden. Seeing you using it, I signaled it to you. (And that Rhyolite cattree is surprising, as is Foroa, who sees everything...Clin ). --Havang(nl) (talk) 18:03, 26 March 2010 (UTC)
Ok no problem. Next time, try to find something it applies to. If you feel like finding names for some of the other "Rhyolite".. -- User:Docu at 18:18, 26 March 2010 (UTC)

Destroying relation of comments to text[edit]

Seems to me that edits like this are a bit of a problem. I've seen this quite a few times: where there was an HTML comment about the relevance of a comment, and this bot did something that, as a side effect, clobbered that relationship. - Jmabel ! talk 04:47, 29 March 2010 (UTC)

Currently, all pywiki based bots do that (including SieBot). If you want to make sure it's kept together with categories, you'd have to include the comment in the sortkey in one way or the other.
As quite a few users are using HotCat to edit categories, it isn't likely that they will see this either.
Ideally the category description rather than comments in the wiki source text mention the elements the categorization is based on. -- User:Docu at 05:14, 29 March 2010 (UTC)

That's really ugly, because it is so unituitive (normally one doesn't expect a bot to juggle the text this way, so one puts a comment in the natural place). I'll do my best to follow this, but I bet tons of stuff like this is getting clobbered all the time. - Jmabel ! talk 16:49, 29 March 2010 (UTC)

Bot should not add categories to redirected categories[edit]

Please correct the bot that is stops adding categories to redirected categories. --Foroa (talk) 20:29, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

I don't think it generally does that. What category did you have in mind? -- User:Docu at 08:30, 13 April 2010 (UTC)
It has done that with 140 or so redirected categories, but maybe, most of them where triggered by a similar mistake from Eusebius bot that aligned a peope by name, living people or so category with the en:wikipedia. Nevertheless, it is not because anothyer bot makes mistakes that category-bot has to make the same mistakes. --Foroa (talk) 16:21, 13 April 2010 (UTC)
I'm aware of these, I might have been the one who first mentioned them to Eusebius. Adding an additional category made it easier to retrieve them. I thought about removing them, but one could have attempted to investigate the reasons for the difference (to en_wiki) and possibly use it to improve overall categorization. -- User:Docu at 17:01, 25 April 2010 (UTC)

Category:Ships by name[edit]

Hello! I do not understand why you are adding Category:Ships by name for example to boats which category (as for Category:Rose Noire II) already contents Category:Sailing yachts by name included in Category:Ships by name. It creates a big list for what use ? For me, having category Sailing yachts by name in category Ships by name is already a mistake... Somebody ask you to create a so huge and confusing category Ship by name with all kinds of boats, sailing boats, yachts ? --Barbetorte (talk) 15:04, 28 April 2010 (UTC)

The idea of Category:Ships by name is to have category that allows to retrieve all categories about specific vessels (watercraft) easily, similar to Category:People by name for persons. I went through various subcategories of Category:Ships to find additional ones to add (manually and by bot).
I agree that the term "ship" may or may not be ideal for this. At Commons, the definition of "ship" is somewhat extensive, but it has the advantage that it is easily understood. If you want, we can discuss the term to use at Category talk:Ships or Category talk:Ships by name.
In any case, the category for the yacht will still be in more specific subcategories that describe accurately the type of watercraft, e.g. Category:Yawls. -- User:Docu at 15:32, 28 April 2010 (UTC)
I think my english is too poor ! Why Rose Noire II, who was already in the category Sailing yachts by name, got with the bot, a category Ships by name ? It was not useful, because category Sailing yachts by name was part of the category Ships by name ! (Same mistake for other yachts) (I agree for the moment it can be interesting to consider a yacht as a ship).--Barbetorte (talk) 17:13, 28 April 2010 (UTC)
The logic behind it is that many people can only tell from a ship that it is floating on the water and that it has a specific name, so they would never find it in the various ship type (yacht, fishing ships, tugboats, sailing ships) categories. So you can see that as a general "white pages" category such as "people by name". --Foroa (talk) 18:25, 28 April 2010 (UTC)
I'm not really convinced that "Sailing yachts by name" should be included there, but it can seem convenient. Maybe it should go into the category description as "see also". -- User:Docu at 20:12, 28 April 2010 (UTC)
Current action contravenes COM:OVERCAT by placing images categories in a parent or grandparent of an existing category. Why are images of ships treated differently from most other images? I object to this as the category Category:Ships by name is already too big to be useful. Also it is failing to add appropriate sorting - sorting ship name categories on prefix rather than ship name. Finavon (talk) 19:36, 28 April 2010 (UTC)
The bot really shouldn't have added any images directly into this category and, AFAIK, it didn't. User:CategorizationBot might sometimes do that, but compared to the large amount of files that would otherwise remain uncategorised, I think it's negligible.
The sorting is an issue that needs to be taken care of. It seemed easier to do that separatly, but I noticed that you already sorted most of them.
If, personally, you don't find the category that useful, you might want to skip it and use some of the other ones. -- User:Docu at 20:12, 28 April 2010 (UTC)
Sorry, the additions are to ship name categories (perhaps subtly different from images). I am delighted when a human or bot editor adds categories where none exist (even if they are not quite correct). My concern is over inappropriate (parent) and incomplete (poor sorting) additions of categories to items that are adequately categorised. Could your bot check to see if the cat is already in a daughter (currently 8) or g/daughter of Category:Ships by name and also look for the defsort template and add a specific sort (name omitting prefix) if not found? Alternatively, is there consensus that categories (unlike images) can be in multi-generational categories? I have assumed that they (like images) should only be in the most specific category. Finavon (talk) 22:53, 28 April 2010 (UTC)
Personally, I'd rather stick to the agreed category description and categorize accordingly. It's already hard to find more ships in the numerous subcategories, thus I don't feel like figuring out if a ship's name is, e.g., a Maori one. As there are other things to do, I will leave this for now. -- User:Docu at 09:27, 30 April 2010 (UTC)

I fixed the category. -- User:Docu at 12:14, 2 May 2010 (UTC)
Ok. Thanks. Hum. Do you make the same for : category:Tour de Romandie 2010, Stage 2 ?
How does your bot work ? Ludo (talk) 12:22, 2 May 2010 (UTC)
It uses the date from exif of uploaders/topics I checked before. -- User:Docu at 12:37, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

Hum. I don't understand why you make that. I think it's better to include all photos in category:Tour de Romandie 2010, Stage 3 and include only category:Tour de Romandie 2010, Stage 3 in Category:April 2010 in Switzerland. Ludo (talk) 12:28, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

I think it's preferable to categorize the images that match the category description directly. Categories tend to be larger or smaller in scope and at some point one looses track of what goes in there. One could break it down by day, but the increased precision might only be apparent.
BTW, as the file names seems to include the name of the cyclist in a consistent way, I could add a corresponding category to each file. If you would do the category descriptions, that would be great. -- User:Docu at 12:37, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the moves - as to the "move" template on the other two, uhm, why? Both of them are German-language category names that are not proper names and have clear English parent category name examples on Commons... Ingolfson (talk) 08:54, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
Categories sometimes get put into parent categories just because one of the images in the category might fit in that parent category too.
In this case, neither category has a description in English, so it might be worth inviting other users to comment. At least railway specialists are generally quite active. -- User:Docu at 09:14, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
I speak German well and understand what the German category names mean - they are clearly both created by someone who knew what he wanted in terms of the category name, but had little knowledge of how commons categories are structured, and which categories and category trees already existed. But if you prefer, I can place the move tags. Ingolfson (talk) 12:00, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

White clocks[edit]

Hello. Creating Category:White clock (1 min interval set) was probably a good idea. But removing categories such as Category:Time 01:03 from File:Clock 01-03.svg was not, provided that the set was created, precisely, to provide at least one clock for any available hour in Category:Clocks by time. Can you undo your edits? I know that some of the categories do not exist, and maybe is it why you removed all of them. Therefore, I may also ask you if it is possible to create the missing ones with your bot. Thankfully. Thierry Caro (talk) 11:35, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for your note and interest in these categories. According to the uploader with whom I discussed this before, the clocks you mention are primarily in use in a template used at fr_wiki. They main reason I removed them is that Category:Clocks by time currently excludes this type of image. The idea is to make it possible to find different clocks a specific times. The subcategories aren't needed to find the same one for every time.
The best way to get a clock for every time is to categorize more clocks by time. Try one of the search links available in the category description and vary the country name. -- User:Docu at 11:48, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
OK, I understand what was the problem. Yet, I have now changed the rules of Category:Clocks by time since there is no reason why both categorizations should not be overlapping. This self-made rule was against the very principle of categorization on Commons, which allows and approves multiple approaches. Thus, maybe can you now get those withdrawn categories back on every file of the set so that each of one of them has both Category:White clock (1 min interval set) and something like Category:Time 01:03? In this context, what does SS stand for? --  Docu  at 11:52, 14 April 2011 (UTC)
S.S. stand for Steam Ship - S.S. Antoinette is the official registered name of the ship. The owner is the S.S. Antoinette GmbH in Basel. --Rolf H. (talk) 13:02, 14 April 2011 (UTC)
We generally don't use prefixes for category names for ships. SS is mainly used for WWII stuff. It can be added to the description instead. --  Docu  at 11:07, 17 April 2011 (UTC)

Ship category renames[edit]

Can you please stop all the unilateral ship category renames. I find several of them to be just ridiculous and am contesting them. I'd rather not have to go to every one of them and do a move. These are contested and should go through a proper channel like move or COM:CFD. Thank you. Wknight94 talk 19:13, 12 April 2011 (UTC)

It's the current standard. Why are you just bothering me with this? --  Docu  at 19:15, 12 April 2011 (UTC)
It is a current standard since when? I have never seen or heard of this until the last few days. Consider them contested please. Wknight94 talk 19:17, 12 April 2011 (UTC)
I noticed you found the relevant discussion from December since. Could you write a synthesis of the discussion? --  Docu  at 11:52, 14 April 2011 (UTC)
My first reaction is that issues are being muddled. I can't determine who is supporting which part of which proposal. There is strong support for removing ship prefixes, and I support that myself. There is also some support for how to disambiguate, i.e. with a date. But I don't notice any support for disambiguating ship category names when no ambiguity exists. Wknight94 talk 12:53, 14 April 2011 (UTC)
How can you know there will be no conflict ? There are at least 500000 registered ships floating around. --Foroa (talk) 13:05, 14 April 2011 (UTC)
When none of the other Wikipedias disambiguate a particular ship - esp. with the main cruise lines like Norwegian Star, etc. - then we shouldn't disambiguate either. It will just confuse people. Wknight94 talk 14:18, 14 April 2011 (UTC)
I'd rather that it be summarized over there. I think you should be able to assess the discussion. BTW, it's about a naming convention, not purely disambiguation. --  Docu  at 11:07, 17 April 2011 (UTC)
@Foroa, using your "how can you know there will be no conflict" applies to any subject. , , , , , , , , etc. ---- there are a lot more people than ships in the world, so they must need disambiguation more than ships, right? And we need to be consistent so we should disambiguate them all. Wknight94 talk 13:53, 17 April 2011 (UTC)
That's correct, if we want to be consistent. On the other hand, for places and people (first name, surname), we have less chances on naming conflicts than with ships that is a fast growing category. --Foroa (talk) 16:55, 17 April 2011 (UTC)
You think so? George Washington (disambiguation), Thomas Jefferson (disambiguation), Amsterdam (disambiguation), Brussels (disambiguation), Earth (disambiguation), Belgium (disambiguation), etc., etc. Almost anything can have multiple meanings, esp. if you allow for any multiple meaning in the universe - not just "notable" ones. You should propose that we disambiguate everything, not just ship names. Wknight94 talk 17:20, 17 April 2011 (UTC)

(Indent reset) That's correct, but let's start where there is a relatively small base, a maximal growth in the short term and more potential naming conflicts than in other businesses. Changing afterwards is the real pain. We have done that with aircraft and airports registrations and never had to look backwards. --Foroa (talk) 20:01, 17 April 2011 (UTC)

Listed buildings in Germany[edit]

Hello Category-bot, there have grown two different category trees for protected monuments in Germany: Category:Listed buildings in Germany and Category:Cultural heritage monuments in Germany. Listed buildings shall now be moved to Cultural heritage monuments. However, it is not sufficient merely to replace Listed buildings by Cultural heritage monuments in all the sub-categories and files, because the Listed buildings categoies had also been categorized in the Buildings categories. It is therefore required to replace each "Listed buildings in ..." entry into a combination of "Cultural heritage monuments in ..." and "Buildings in ...". Is this possible with your bot? --Bjs (talk) 13:21, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

So, going through [5] (see below), 333 subcategories should all be renamed from "Listed_buildings_in_xxx" to "Cultural heritage monuments in xxx", e.g. Category:Listed_buildings_in_Abenberg to Category:Cultural heritage monuments in Abenberg and the 4 subcategories of Category:Listed_buildings_in_Abenberg added into Category:Buildings in Abenberg?
So if it goes through categories like Category:Burg Abenberg,

Yes, that is correct. But not only the sub-categories of these categories contained in the list, but also the files directly contained in these categories. As another example, let us take the Category:Listed buildings in Ismaning containing among others the Category:Hofkapelle (Goldachhof) and the File:Gutsallee Goldachhof.jpg. Both should be treated as follows:

In this example, I noticed that the Category:Buildings in Ismaning had not yet been created at all. Would it be possible to create possibly missing "Buildings in xyz" categories with the bot, too? --Bjs (talk) 06:30, 14 April 2011 (UTC)

Sure. BTW I created the category for the sample Category:Cultural heritage monuments in Ismaning. Would you have a look at Template:Category definition: Cultural heritage monuments by area (Germany) and add a better definition what it's meant to include. Ideally in both German and English. Full details could probably go into Category:Cultural heritage monuments in Germany. If there are Wikipedia articles in either language that explain it better, those should probably be linked as well. --  Docu  at 11:48, 14 April 2011 (UTC)
(1) what should be done with the "Listed .." categories? Redirect or delete? --  Docu  at 11:01, 17 April 2011 (UTC)
(2) Category:Listed buildings in Abenberg (sample from above) is currently a subcategory of Category:buildings in Abenberg. Should be leave this that way or replace Category:buildings in Abenberg with something else? --  Docu  at 11:23, 17 April 2011 (UTC)
(3) I just finished adding Template:Category definition: Cultural heritage monuments by area (Germany) to all categories that should be moved. --  Docu  at 11:23, 17 April 2011 (UTC)
(1) The listed buildings categories can be deleted. Broken links from the Germany wikipedia may then be correcte by the Projekt:Denkmalpflege, otherwise we wouldn't see which link would go to category redirects.
(2) No "cultural heritage monument" category should be a subcategory of a "buldings in" category. In the case of Abensberg (and any other similar cases), Category:Buildings in Abenberg can be removed from the Category:Listed buildings in Abenberg because all the entries contained in Category:Listed buildings in Abenberg will be categorized in parallel into Category:Cultural heritage monuments in Abenberg and into Category:Buildings in Abenberg.
(3) Fine. I adapted it a bit and shall provide further information and links to corresponding articles in the Category:Cultural heritage monuments in Germany. --Bjs (talk) 19:37, 17 April 2011 (UTC)
(2) I thought about moving Category:Listed buildings in Abenberg to Category:Cultural heritage monuments in Abenberg (and all other 300 similar categories). Category:Cultural heritage monuments in Abenberg should probably be at least in Category:Abenberg. --  Docu  at 19:52, 17 April 2011 (UTC)
Shall I go ahead with that? --  Docu  at 19:17, 18 April 2011 (UTC)
(2) Oh yes, the category of the town or village should be present in the cultural heritage monuments categories.
Perhaps you might start a test run with Abenberg and then we see whether everything is ok before running the bot on the 300 categories. --Bjs (talk) 07:26, 19 April 2011 (UTC)
✓ Done. The parent categories of Category:Cultural heritage monuments in Abenberg don't look ideal yet, but once the parent categories are being moved it will be ok.
BTW the other day I did Category:Cultural heritage monuments in Ismaning. --  Docu  at 10:37, 19 April 2011 (UTC) (edited)
Abensberg and Ismaning both are all right, you may go on with the other categories. --Bjs (talk) 07:40, 20 April 2011 (UTC)
It's mostly done. (a) I still need to remove categories such as (Category:Landkreis Eichstätt from Category:Cultural heritage monuments in Adelschlag). I will get this done in a couple of days. --  Docu  at 05:24, 21 April 2011 (UTC)
(b) Buildings categories for some of the below might still need to be created. --  Docu  at 05:55, 21 April 2011 (UTC)

Could this not be performed by the bot, too ? if not exist category buildings in xyz create category buildings in xyz with entry category:xyz? (or something like that?) The cases for which this does not work (e.g. if comma is used instead of paratheses or similar cases) could be revised manually. Grüße --Bjs (talk) 09:32, 25 April 2011 (UTC)

Adding wrong categories[edit]

If your bot continues to add massively wrong and non existing categories such as Category:Television actors from the United States , we'll have to block it. --Foroa (talk) 20:44, 18 April 2011 (UTC)

What's is "non existing" about Category:Television actors from the United States ? Why did you remove the interwikis? --  Docu  at 21:49, 18 April 2011 (UTC)
Actually there are a few initial categories where the check with didn't work. The main idea was to add interwikis though (sample: Category:Stephen Collins), but I haven't found an efficient way to identify categories that could still use them .. --  Docu  at 05:14, 19 April 2011 (UTC)
Lets not play little games. What is the value of such an improvement ? Many of your bot "categorisations" require significant work to clean up, so its more efficient to revert them. Please don't launch such bot work massively until its gets at least the basic quality of Multichill category bots. --Foroa (talk) 06:11, 19 April 2011 (UTC)
That was one of the initial ones .. Please excuse that I misunderstood your syntax. --  Docu  at 06:19, 19 April 2011 (UTC)

Formatting edit by bot: iw-links[edit]

Docu,

Category-bot formatting edits currently moves categories below interwikilinks (example: [6]). Shouldn't the iw-links remain at the bottom of the page? MKFI (talk) 08:18, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

At Wikipedia, that's the way it's being done, but here at Commons, categories are generally added at the bottom (at least by HotCat). --  Docu  at 00:33, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
I came by with just the same question after seeing a slew of ship categories being similarly affected. Seems like this would make editing a little more confusing to new folks just coming over here, and, personally, feels like an illogical arrangement. May I suggest disabling this particular function of the bot, since it really doesn't add anything? After all, just because HotCat does it... (Which, btw, applies more to image pages, where there aren't usually any interwiki links. Just makes sure the categories don't get mixed in with the description and license info.) Cheers :) Huntster (t @ c) 17:34, 13 May 2011 (UTC)
Not sure if all folks necessarily come from en_wiki, .. (hopefully not).
Personally, I think it's annoying when categories are mixed up with descriptions and it's an advantage when they are at one location. I don't really care which one that is though.
Anyways, last time it was discussed I think placing them last was favored. As they are being edited through Hotcat/Cat-a-lot, it doesn't matter that much though. - --  Docu  at 10:03, 15 May 2011 (UTC)
I agree completely with not having them mixed with descriptors. I would simply rather not have the IWs mixed with the categories. If they are to be moved (which I still disagree with, but it is minor), please move the DEFAULTSORT magic word with the categories, so the IWs aren't sitting between it and the cats. Huntster (t @ c) 00:39, 16 May 2011 (UTC)
I will try to change that. --  Docu  at 05:33, 16 June 2011 (UTC)

Broken Links in other WP-projects[edit]

Hi Category-bot. The Category-bot is changing a lot of Cats. This looks very good. One request and a question[edit]

Firstly I request the following category to be moved as the word rollercoaster should be roller coaster (two words).

Rename Category:Sonic Spinball (rollercoaster) to Category:Sonic Spinball (roller coaster) (0 entries moved, 0 to go)

A while ago (more than a month) I requested the following categories to be moved at User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands. About two weeks ago they were moved to the main page for processing however they still haven't been done. When I previously requested something here it was done within 24 hours (brilliant compared) so if you could please move these also that would be greatly appreciated. My reasoning was: "There are no other Movie Worlds so country disambiguation is not necessary. Movie Park Germany and Parque Warner Madrid were formerly Movie Worlds."

Rename Category:Warner Bros. Movie World Australia to Category:Warner Bros. Movie World (0 entries moved, 0 to go)
Rename Category:Events at Warner Bros. Movie World Australia to Category:Events at Warner Bros. Movie World (0 entries moved, 0 to go)
Rename Category:Roller coasters at Warner Bros. Movie World Australia to Category:Roller coasters at Warner Bros. Movie World (0 entries moved, 0 to go)

Kind Regards Themeparkgc  Talk  04:49, 1 July 2011 (UTC)

Hi, I'm just wondering if there is a reason as to why this request hasn't been completed in over two weeks yet requests posted after mine have been completed. Kind Regards Themeparkgc  Talk  00:55, 16 July 2011 (UTC)

Please move[edit]

Rename Category:Pole sensual to Category:Erotic pole dancing (0 entries moved, 0 to go) The "pole sensual" doesn't seem to fit into the relevant categories, nor into Wikipedia, where this is just en:Pole dance. However, there is already a Category:Pole dancing, so the rename should bring it in line with the existing category types/parent cats.

Please move this[edit]

USS President etc.[edit]

Why was Category:USS President (1800) moved to Category:USS President (ship, 1800) (and several similar ones)? Is there another "USS President (1800)" entry which is not a ship? "USS" already stands for "United States Ship" so the new name seems redundant. The former name also matches the en-wiki article name. I also though the disambiguation stuff was to be as minimal as possible, and not include descriptive names which should be obvious by what it is categorized under... I guess I'm confused on several levels why those changes were made. Carl Lindberg (talk) 17:56, 21 August 2011 (UTC)

Okay, I see the discussion at Category talk:Ships by name#Upcoming_de_facto_ship_naming_convention. Not sure I agree for naval ships, at least ones with "USS", "HMS", "HMAS" etc. prefixes (which I think should definitely remain, also see s:Executive Order 549), but I can see it for other ships which don't have those prefixes. I could see keeping consistency for naval ships, so... whatever ;-) Never mind I guess. Carl Lindberg (talk) 19:17, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
Looks like en_WP and NARA ignore Executive Order 549, or at least they don't use the official designation.
The idea is indeed to keep it consistent with the convention at Commons: the general scheme is "<name> (ship, <year of completion>)".
This is somewhat different from en_wp (using e.g. year of commissioning if disambiguation is needed), but closer to some other languages.
A redirect remains for the ease of navigation (and to avoid dead links). --  Docu  at 19:28, 21 August 2011 (UTC)

Snagboat vs. tugboat[edit]

Please see my question about Category:W.T. Preston (tugboat, 1929) at Commons:Help desk#Who to take things up with when I disagree with a bot category change. I was advised there to take it up with User:Docu, but I see his talk page says to take up bot-related questions on the talk page of the bot. If it's useful, feel free to move my question from Commons:Help desk to here. - Jmabel ! talk 00:18, 23 August 2011 (UTC)

The problem is that the standard formats are "W.T. Preston (tugboat, 1929)" or "W.T. Preston (ship, 1929)" but not "W.T. Preston (snagboat, 1929)".
If you think the current title is problematic, I can move it to "W.T. Preston (ship, 1929)". --  Docu  at 05:43, 23 August 2011 (UTC)
Yes, at least 'ship' would not be so actively misleading (though it's really a bit small to call it a 'ship' rather than a 'boat'). To the best of my knowledge, a snagboat is not considered a tug and indeed (I just checked) snagboat makes not a single mention of the word 'tugboat'. - Jmabel ! talk 00:47, 24 August 2011 (UTC)

WLM 2011[edit]

There is some problem with templates and categories in the contest Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2011 in Germany. Special upload assistants have been created to upload images, wherein the Template:Wiki Loves Monuments 2011 is automatically set in the form de. This template automatically puts the template into the Category:Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2011 in Germany. Additionally, one of the subcategories thereof is entered depending on the federal state.

Some experienced users, however, upload their images without using the upload assistants. Of these, some forget to ptu de into the description page of the image file and merely enter the image category of Germany od the federal state or both. This results in these images being excluded from the contest because they do not have the template.

Would it be possible for your bot to insert de on all file description pages which

This could be done once at the end of the contest (October 1, 0:00 UTC) or sometimes between now and then. --Bjs (talk) 12:28, 2 September 2011 (UTC)

I'm not convinced if it's a good idea to add the template to files of uploaders who didn't choose to add it. Maybe someone at Commons:Bots/Work requests would do your request. --  Docu  at 21:43, 9 September 2011 (UTC)

WLM 2011 again[edit]

Hello Category-bot,

Wiki loves monuments 2011 is now over. When checking the results for Germany, we found that more than 1000 images are not cetegorized correctly. In detail:

Could this work be done by your bot? --Bjs (talk) 08:26, 15 October 2011 (UTC)

Most of it probably yes. If you could spell it out with CatScan2 requests like the below, that would make it easier. Sample:
--  Docu  at 09:34, 15 October 2011 (UTC)

I shall do it this weekend. There still is another problem: It is possible that a cultural heritage monument of e.g. Bavaria has been inserted into the category of Saxony (for example because the uploader comes from Saxony and therefore has used the corresponding upload assistent.) After completing the above categorization, it would be included in two of the state specific image categories. Is there an easy way to detect this or does one have to check any combination (in total 16*15/2=120)? --Bjs (talk) 09:53, 15 October 2011 (UTC)

--Bjs (talk) 15:05, 20 October 2011 (UTC)
I do not understand why the results of the above catscan conatins files which are correctly sorted into the Cultural heritage monuments category, e.g. in Schleswig-Holstein. I do not see any error in the catscan for, either. --Bjs (talk) 15:41, 20 October 2011 (UTC)
CatScan2 might store the category structure for some time. If subcategories are added to a Cultural heritage monuments category since CatScan was first run, it might not have retrieved them as part of the Cultural heritage monuments tree when my bot ran them again and thus still added the categories.
Probably due to an error on my side, I had some problems with a few of the above links and the related queries might not have worked correctly. I fixed most if not all of it already.
I will try to set up batch to run queries like
http://toolserver.org/~magnus/catscan_rewrite.php?language=commons&project=wikimedia&categories=Cultural+heritage+monuments+in+Schleswig-Holstein%E2%80%8E%7C9%0D%0AImages+from+Schleswig-Holstein+with+broken+categories+%28WLM2011%29&ns%5B6%5D=1&doit=1
and remove categories like Category:Images from Schleswig-Holstein with broken categories (WLM2011). If it's run once in a while, it can get ride of the ones that are no longer needed without much effort. Given storage mentioned before, it might take some time until they get removed.
If there are states for which the categories still need to be added, please advise. --  Docu  at 18:26, 20 October 2011 (UTC), edited 18:34, 20 October 2011 (UTC)

B&W photos of ships[edit]

Hi Docu, just wondering if you can shed some light on why Category-bot performed this edit. Wouldn't the more focused category be best here? Huntster (t @ c) 20:31, 5 December 2011 (UTC)

Yes, I agree. I added it to Hydrofoils with raised foils. Side views might be another one.
BTW see also category talk. I had checked and found it in a subcategory of ships by name (USS Plainview). --  Docu  at 21:28, 5 December 2011 (UTC)
Yes, I can agree with the idea that "ships" is a bit too focused, but wouldn't it have been better to upmerge those images to Category:Black and white photographs of watercraft, rather than the completely unrelated meta-cat Category:Black and white photographs? I can imaging many folks looking for strictly black and white images of boats and ships, which gets hard to do in the B&W meta-category, given that it holds 66,000 images. Huntster (t @ c) 22:43, 5 December 2011 (UTC)
I suppose the other question that should posed is if the non-process subcats of Category:Black and white photography should be moved over to Category:Black and white photographs. This would probably alleviate much of the confusion in terminology, and seems fairly trivial. Huntster (t @ c) 23:03, 5 December 2011 (UTC)
Now that the ships are fairly well identified and categorized, I think the 2nd level should be to find categories similar to the ones listed at ideas for additional categories on images. I don't think the watercraft category adds anything.
If you are looking for a B&W image, practically, you could use any image and make it into B&W.
Personally, I think it's easier to create a dynamical intersection with one specific category when needed. I think this is probably why the current large category is favored.
This also requires users to find more specific topical categories such as Hydrofoils with raised foils and avoids that images disappear in static intersections. --  Docu  at 06:05, 6 December 2011 (UTC)
Similarly here. All reference to it being B&W was removed. The comment "also in Ships by name" illuminates nothing. Why would the fact that it's in Category:Ships by name be a reason to remove reference to it being black and white? - Jmabel ! talk 02:45, 6 December 2011 (UTC)
I think you removed that yourself, between the first and the second step of the bot's run. It should have remained at least in Category:Black and white photographs. --  Docu  at 06:05, 6 December 2011 (UTC)

Category:Pages with broken file links[edit]

Could you start a bot run to remove all images placed in this cat by a standard category entry? This cat should only include auto-placed files, there may still be some manually placed images there. Another nice feature would be a null edit for all images there, this should remove the auto-placed cat if there's no redlink anymore (cat is autoplaced but not autoremoved if the redlink becomes valid). --Denniss (talk) 14:57, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

Why the bot is moving interwikis to the middle of a category page? See example here Category:Jean Claude Nicolas Forestier As far as I know, interwikis are placed at the very bottom always.--Jordiferrer (talk) 18:50, 30 June 2012 (UTC)

Category:Exodus (ship, 1927)[edit]

Hallo Docu, the name of the ship is a little bit complicated. The correct name is „Exodus from Europe 1947“. „Exodus 1947“ or „Exodus“ are short forms of the name. Furthermore, the ship was launched in 1927, but was put into service until 1928. Quite correctly, it would therefore read: Category:Exodus from Europe 1947 (ship, 1928). See also en:SS Exodus. You can do it but left as it is. greetings --Botaurus (talk) 21:59, 11 July 2012 (UTC)

Could you also please move subcats to parent cat, no renaming[edit]

In Category:Paintings in the Kunsthistorisches Museum all subcategories :Category:Paintings by <name> <familyname> in the Kunsthistorisches Museum should be moved to parent cat Category:Paintings in the Kunsthistorisches Museum by painter and sorted by familyname: ‎|<familyname>; the existing parent cat Category:Paintings by painter by museum‎ needs the same sort key.. |<familyname>.I spend already hours to do so. thanks.--Oursana (talk) 21:30, 26 August 2012 (UTC)

Please rename cat[edit]

Request to remove manually placed license cats in file namespace[edit]

Several thousand images have incorrectly (manually) placed cats "like self-published work", "CC-BY-SA-3.0" or similar, usually duplicating auto-placed cats from license or info tags/templates. These are those I have found yet and I request these to be removed. Action has to be limited to file namespace only.

Backlog at User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands[edit]

Hi, hope you are well. There is a bit of a backlog at "User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands". Can you help to clear it? Thanks. — SMUconlaw (talk) 10:36, 25 November 2012 (UTC)

I think it's done. User: Siebrand fixed it. [15]. I think it works. --Knochen ﱢﻝﱢ‎  21:38, 26 November 2012 (UTC)
Oh, great! I've been wondering when something would be done about this. Cheers, JackLee talk 21:56, 26 November 2012 (UTC)

Category:The nativity of Saint-Martin (Groslay) on stained glass windows[edit]

This and many others categories from the bot are wrong: that is the nativity of Christ/Jesus on stained glass windows of the church Saint-Martin (Groslay). Why have the bot changed so many categories of stained glass windows in the wrong way?--Reinhardhauke (talk) 22:17, 26 December 2012 (UTC)

It was following a request by UseR:Jacklee on User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands. You might want to ask him about it. --  Docu  at 22:43, 26 December 2012 (UTC)

Rotation-Request by 0°: File:Eiffel tower at night WLM.JPG[edit]

Hallo Docu,
Dein Category-bot hat wohl folgendes beim Bild File:Eiffel tower at night WLM.JPG bewirkt:

 • 20:54, 12 February 2013‎ Docu (talk | contribs)‎ m . . (723 bytes) (+13)‎ . . ((Script) Requesting rotation of the image by 0°.) (undo)

Ist das ein Bug, oder irgendwie beabsichtigt?
(Zur Erinnerung: Der Eintrag vom Rotate-bot beinhaltet u.a. folgende Bitte:
"This image will be rotated by 0° by Rotatebot. This could be useful if the thumbnail displays right but not the full resolution.
Please do not use this if possible ...")
Jaybear...disc. • 20:42, 17 February 2013 (UTC)

This has nothing to do with this bot. It's a request I made for User:Rotatebot. Too bad it's currently off. --  Docu  at 21:16, 17 February 2013 (UTC)

Found the same request for this files:
And sorry, but the question is, why to equest rotate _nothing_?
... especially, when the bot asks: Please do not use this if possible ...
Jaybear...disc. • 23:28, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
Please use User talk:Rotatebot if you have questions about it. This is to mention issues of User:Category-bot. --  Docu  at 04:01, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

New ships[edit]

The bot was updating this page at least once a day until March 2 after which it seems to have stopped. Is there a reason? Or is New ships not useful? The whole thing seems under-explained. Rmhermen (talk) 14:43, 7 March 2013 (UTC)

Healthcare in Afghanistan[edit]

Hi - can you please move all content from sub-category Healthcare in Afghanistan to existing category Health in Afghanistan, then speedy delete Healthcare in Afghanistan? Per closed discussion here Commons:Categories_for_discussion/Archive/2012/05#Category:Healthcare_in_Afghanistan

Rename Category:Healthcare in Afghanistan to Category:Health in Afghanistan (0 entries moved, 0 to go)

Preference would be to redirect old cat to the new one. Obi-Wan Kenobi (talk) 10:55, 19 March 2013 (UTC)
