Hello, Chenspec!

Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations"). Pro-tip: The CommonSense tool can help you find the best category for your image.

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

How do I delete a page?[edit]

I Need to delete this page - I opened a Category with the same name and it is now redundant. How do I delete a page? Chenspec (talk) 04:51, 5 October 2013 (UTC)

Only Administrators can delete pages. Since you are a relatively new user, every new page you create is reviewed by someone doing New Page Patrol. Therefore you can just leave it and one of us will delete it, as I did. You can also add a Speedy tag to it to request a routine deletion. Finally we have "Nominate for Deletion" in the left hand column of every page, but that is reserved for pages that require discussion before deletion.
By the way -- it is a very common mistake -- I myself have made it many times. If you have questions, you may ask them at the Village Pump in any of 42 languages or on my talk page. I will also watch for questions here on your talk page for at least a week. .     Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 11:09, 5 October 2013 (UTC)
Thanks - I am new to the site, I am more active in the Hebrew Wikipedia... I started to categorize images for Wiki Loves Monuments. This is a fantastic competition and I think it is also very important! By the way, I'm looking for a more efficient way to categorize images. i use cat-a-lot, But you can use it only from categories and not from my uploads page Chenspec (talk) 12:43, 5 October 2013 (UTC)

Neukoln (talk) 07:57, 8 November 2013 (UTC)

Chenspec (talk) 05:58, 9 November 2013 (UTC)

Category seems excessive[edit]

Re [3]: what's the plan here? Do you actually intend to reclassify every picture of a woman that doesn't mention gender into Category:Female humans? - Jmabel ! talk 16:18, 21 February 2015 (UTC)

 • I've taken this up more generally at Commons:Village pump#"Female_humans", because I think the issue goes beyond any one person's edits. You might want to comment there. - Jmabel ! talk 16:26, 21 February 2015 (UTC)
 • Please stop adding this category. Regards, Yann (talk) 16:29, 21 February 2015 (UTC)

Sorry, I saw it just now. I did not mean to cause trouble .... Chenspec (talk) 16:42, 21 February 2015 (UTC)
Yann, I can not comment there now so I will be happy if you transfer my message: "It is very difficult to get things through the sub-categories, so it's easier for me to put a lot of pictures in one place and then use the Cat-a-lot. I did not mean to cause trouble. I would be most grateful if you could consider the work I've done and restore the catalog temporarily. I will use it to divide the images into appropriate categories and not leave them in Category: Female humans." Thank you Chenspec (talk) 16:52, 21 February 2015 (UTC)
Chenspec: probably you should create a hidden category if this is your intent, and most likely use your name as part of that hidden category so that people can tell that this is something for your own use during some work, rather than a permanent part of the category tree. - Jmabel ! talk 17:59, 21 February 2015 (UTC)
WOW is a great idea that will help me a lot - it's like using Wikipedia drafts? Chenspec (talk) 18:29, 21 February 2015 (UTC)
@Jmabel: how do I pass the pictures to the new category Category:Temporary categories for User:Chenspec Cat-a-lot - Female humans? Need to restore ... Chenspec (talk) 20:18, 21 February 2015 (UTC)

Category:Temporary categories for User:Chenspec Cat-a-lot - Female humans[edit]

Hi, Chenspec, just by curiousity, why do you keep a Category:Temporary categories for User:Chenspec Cat-a-lot - Female humans ? Face-smile.svg Lotje (talk) 12:26, 16 May 2015 (UTC)

The main reason is convenience. It is designed to help me collect images that I want to categorize, without overloading the existing categories (I really try not to keep more than 200 images in category). It's much more efficient to work with the cataloging tool Cat-a-lot in this way. I chose this topic "Female humans" for now, but later on I plan to do similar categories other issues that interest me. What bothers me is that a lot of good pictures are lost Wikimedia Commons, because nobody knows they are there .... This is my way to promote the accessibility of images. So occasionally I change them - remove images that are in enough categories, or those that I can not find an appropriate category for them. And of course I add new photos when I find them. Now for example, I have too many pictures, it is hard to work with it. So soon I will filter some of them. Hope I answered your question and I'd love to hear what you think Chenspec (talk) 13:29, 16 May 2015 (UTC)
Thank you Chenspec. I feel like you,... a lot of good pictures, nobody knows they are there. I would be most happy to take a look now and then at your category and see if I can find a suitable page to add the nice ones. Face-smile.svg Lotje (talk) 15:16, 16 May 2015 (UTC)

Category:Women faces etc.[edit]

"Women faces" is simply bad English. Either "women's faces" or "faces of women". - Jmabel ! talk 01:21, 22 May 2015 (UTC)

Thanks - I corrected it to Category:Women's faces, What about categories Category:Girls faces & Category:Female faces? Do their names sound good in English or should we change them too? Chenspec (talk) 05:46, 22 May 2015 (UTC)
Category:Female faces is fine. Category:Girls faces should be Category:Girls' faces. - Jmabel ! talk 14:54, 22 May 2015 (UTC)

Category capitalisation[edit]

Hi Chenspec. When creating categories, please be mindful of capitalisation. I've moved "Female Shirts" to "Female shirts" and "Female Undershirts" to "Female undershirts". Words that are not proper nouns should not be capitalised. Huntster (t @ c) 21:18, 24 October 2015 (UTC)

Ok, thanks for the correction. I will remember it in the future Chenspec (talk) 04:39, 25 October 2015 (UTC)

Category:Female undershirts?[edit]

I've seen that one of your new creations is the Category:Female undershirts. The name seems a little strange to me. There may be women's undershirts, but shirts are not female or male. The other thing that disturbs me more ist that you categorized a lot of (my) pictures there, that do not show underwear but sports clothing, and one of a woman in a black dress/gown (that one i corrected, the others are too much for me to change them all). --Tsui (talk) 18:06, 25 October 2015 (UTC)

Agreed. I particularly don't understand images like File:Stav Shaffir.JPG and File:Toray PPO 2009 Li Na.jpg (amongst others) being included. Huntster (t @ c) 21:07, 25 October 2015 (UTC)
Tsui, Huntster - Sorry, probably a language problem. The intention was sleeveless shirts (from the pictures that were there before, I thought it was the intention). It's the same word in Hebrew - how it works in English? Chenspec (talk) 21:17, 25 October 2015 (UTC)

Cat-a-lot[edit]

Hello Chenspec. What is your intention for the hidden category Category:Temporary for Cat-a-lot - Female humans? What are you planning to do with the pictures of women? What is the intention? You have categorized images made by users that have contacted me and are worried about what this category is used for. Regards, --Gereon K. (talk) 12:11, 27 December 2015 (UTC)

Hi Gereon K. No problem, actually I was asked about it already - you can read the explanation in this discussion. Chenspec (talk) 14:03, 27 December 2015 (UTC)

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2015 is open![edit]

POTY barnstar.svg

You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2015 Picture of the Year contest.

Dear Chenspec,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2015 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the tenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2015) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1322 candidate images. There are 56 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category. In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 28 May 2016, 23:59:59 UTC.

Telephone baby[edit]

Hi, you keep moving File:The telephone baby cph.3b17965.jpg into categories for females, when there is no indication that this is actually a girl. In early 20th-century US, children of both sexes were dressed in the same clothes, so it's possible that this may be a boy. For example, see US President Franklin D. Roosevelt as a young child. howcheng {chat} 16:14, 27 June 2016 (UTC)

Good you've noticed. As I recall, I saw it originally in a category of females. But If there is doubt, I agree that we should avoid these categories. Chenspec (talk) 04:39, 28 June 2016 (UTC)
