Mass deletion

Hi Clusternote, I don't get it. Vikiçizer nominates some of your images. You respond by plastering his user page with numerous notifications and than complain several times that he didn't do one request? That seems to be conflicting. This sure smells a lot like revenge nominations..... Anyway, please use Commons:Deletion requests/Mass deletion request in the future. Multichill (talk) 16:02, 14 February 2015 (UTC)

To User:Multichill: Probably your pointing out may be true. I had tried to communicate with him on deletion request page, but, he didn't respond to it. So I tried to make him understand how users feel about his request. ... However, my attempts seem all failed. He seems to have a firm determination.
Anyway, I understand the use of mass deletion request. (Probably I'll try to avoid deletion request itself from now, as until yesterday. It is my original policy) --Clusternote (talk) 16:30, 14 February 2015 (UTC)
  • Hi, this is not revenge nomination. Please, see Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Vikiçizer. I'm still sad for toy files, they're gonna be deleted. My files about toy pianos deleted like yours. And they said "Please do start a deletion request for any files or categories you think are copyright violations. If you want I can show you some easy ways to start a DR" and i'm doing what i believed. We're gonna see the results about nominations. thanks...Vikiçizer (talk) 16:12, 14 February 2015 (UTC)
Hi, User:Vikiçizer. I already regret my deletion requests, because I've avoided the deletion request for other user's file since 2010, as my policy. I've already understand the situation written on Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Vikiçizer, thus, I'll withdraw my delete requests (if it can).
I think the deletion requests based on COM:TOYS should be carefully treated, however, it seems hard task on current situation. Do you think what is problem ?
(sorry for my poor English) --Clusternote (talk) 16:49, 14 February 2015 (UTC)
I understand you, don't take it personally, no problem. My antique toys photos, instrument photos, car-truck model photos, all animals toys 'n models photos deleted by same reasons. I couldn't stop deleting. Now, rule is rule. No privilege any other file. But I wanted to start a discussion for all toys photo. Every toys photo uploader must join that discussion. We're gonna do what wikimedia rules or we're gonna change the rules about toy or models photo policy. That's all, thank you for understanding. But now I have to start deletion requests for my toys and models photos too. Bye...Vikiçizer (talk) 17:38, 14 February 2015 (UTC)
Please wait for 10 minutes. Now I'm withdrawing my requests.
P.S. Probably, external photo album services (like a Picaso or Flickr) may be suitable as place holder for deleted files. --Clusternote (talk) 17:47, 14 February 2015 (UTC)

All my deletion request have been withdrawn.
Please enjoying your happy photography life. --Clusternote (talk) 17:56, 14 February 2015 (UTC)

Thanks, please you enjoying your happy photography life too...Don't have to withdrawn, but however you like, anyway you like. Bye Vikiçizer (talk) 18:08, 14 February 2015 (UTC)
File:FGF museum 07. Hendrix model.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Category discussion warning

Tsukuba Express has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Old Yagishita House - Negishi Natsukashi Park

Hi,

When you upload pictures from photozou, please do a favor for the license reviewers and put the link to the image information page where it shows the license (http://photozou.jp/photo/show/1517641/193669953) on the source field instead of the direct link to the image (http://kura3.photozou.jp/pub/641/1517641/photo/193669953_org.v1427303616.jpg) so we can check the license easily instead of wasting time looking for the image. Thank you very much. Thibaut120094 (talk) 19:52, 10 April 2015 (UTC)

@Thibaut120094: . Sorry for my mistakes, and thank you for your bulk correction of URLs. Surely, the direct link seems inappropriate. I'll try to use the permanent links including license (like a http://photozou.jp/photo/show/1517641/193669953), from now. --Clusternote (talk) 23:59, 10 April 2015 (UTC)

Bots

You are receiving this message because a technical change may affect a bot, gadget, or user script you have been using. The breaking change involves API calls. This change has been planned for two years. The WMF will start making this change on 30 June 2015. A partial list of affected bots can be seen here: https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-l/2015-June/081931.html This includes all bots that are using pywikibot compat. Some of these bots have already been fixed. However, if you write user scripts or operate a bot that uses the API, then you should check your code, to make sure that it will not break.

What, exactly, is breaking? The "default continuation mode" for action=query requests to api.php will be changing to be easier for new coders to use correctly. To find out whether your script or bot may be affected, then search the source code (including any frameworks or libraries) for the string "query-continue". If that is not present, then the script or bot is not affected. In a few cases, the code will be present but not used. In that case, the script or bot will continue working.

This change will be part of 1.26wmf12. It will be deployed to test wikis (including mediawiki.org) on 30 June, to non-Wikipedias (such as Wiktionary) on 1 July, and to all Wikipedias on 2 July 2015.

If your bot or script is receiving the warning about this upcoming change (as seen at https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=allpages ), it's time to fix your code!

Either of the above solutions may be tested immediately, you'll know it works because you stop seeing the warning.

Do you need help with your own bot or script? Ask questions in e-mail on the mediawiki-api or wikitech-l mailing lists. Volunteers at m:Tech or w:en:WP:Village pump (technical) or w:en:Wikipedia:Bot owners' noticeboard may also be able to help you.

Are you using someone else's gadgets or user scripts? Most scripts are not affected. To find out if a script you use needs to be updated, then post a note at the discussion page for the gadget or the talk page of the user who originally made the script. Date categories

If I may give you an advice, I think that most of the time it is best not to use categories containing a date, like Category:2013 in Tokyo, to take one example. It is appropriate for images showing events that are typical of that date and place, but not for all images that were taken that year in Tokyo. Such categories are not useful if they contain random events, and they easily become crowded if we use them often. We should ask ourselves what images somebody may expect if they look into a category. Sincerely, --Jonund (talk) 16:46, 12 July 2015 (UTC)

Hi, @Jonund: : I'm not the advocator of Category:2013 in Tokyo at all, so I'm complicated for your comment. On the information-gathering, Five Ws and one H (i.e., Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How) is often considered as the un-ignorable attribute set, thus Category:2013 in Tokyo seems a rational categorization as a combination of When and Where to resolve the crowding of each parent category.
Additionally, in my eyes, the hierarchy under the Category:Japan by year seems yet not well categorized per above view point. It should be categorized in more detail by the type of event, as seen on the similar categories under other countries.
Anyway, if you felt odd on these conventions of Wikimedia Commons, you should discuss in appropriate place other than my talk page. best, --Clusternote (talk) 01:49, 13 July 2015 (UTC)
In my opinion, Five Ws and one H is a basic rule in the description field, but usually not at all appropriate for categorizing. But maybe I should discuss it in an other place. I just wanted to give you a note, since you had added categories containing date and place. My memory didn't serve me well, however; it was Category:2013 in Akihabara and not Category:2013 in Tokyo. --Jonund (talk) 15:59, 18 July 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for your response. As for Category:2013 in Akihabara and its parent category Category:Akihabara by year, I've categorized these for several reasons: Akihabara is one of the important neighborhoods in a view point of the history of Japanese sub-cultures, and this neighborhood has been rapidly changed in about five years interval; however, the medium before 2005 (years before an era of the pedestrian zone culture and PC parts, and before) are very rare on here in Wikimedia Commons, and also the searches of a specific years on Wikimedia Commons are often not work well due to the ambiguity of format; and a extraction of specific era's media is often required a troublesome work; thus I explicitly created the Category:Akihabara by year and its sub-categories to reduce redundant works by sharing the preparatory work. --Clusternote (talk) 23:39, 18 July 2015 (UTC)

Miami University Libraries

Hi. Thanks for getting the files from Miami University Libraries into a better state of organization. Quick question: we now have Category:Bowden Postcard Collection and Category:Bowden Postcard Collection Online. What's the difference? - Eureka Lott 00:06, 10 September 2015 (UTC)

@EurekaLott: Hi, thanks for your message. The difference is whether each image (with a "bowden postcard collection" tag) is belonged to Flickr album "Bowden Postcard Collection Online" or not, in the aim of consistency check between the Flickr and Commons. And now, of course you can re-categorize or merge these by your responsibility. best, --Clusternote (talk) 00:44, 10 September 2015 (UTC)

Hi, thanks to correct me. I am trying to organise better some categories, but maybe you can help better than me with Category:String_instruments and its subpages. Cheers --Ruthven (msg) 08:57, 7 October 2015 (UTC)

@Ruthven: Sorry for my undo on your edits. Surely, the re-arrangement and the re-categorizations of crowded categories are always needed, and of course, we need the cooperative work for handling the thousands of media files.
Although I have tried to (as possible as I can) avoid disturbing the other user's contributions, and also tried to accept the slightly crowded state of categories as is... however on today, I clearly failed to stop my bad habit, i.e. the undo without careful consideration of other users.
I apologize for your discomfort caused by my action. And I hope your valuable contribution will continue in the future. --Clusternote (talk) 09:34, 7 October 2015 (UTC)

More on Early guitars

I think it is useless to have the super-category, when the file is already present in a sub-category. By simple inheritance, a Guitarra morisca‎ is an Early guitar because it belongs to Category:Guitarra morisca which belongs to Category:Early guitars. It is completely useless to crowd the supercategory. --Ruthven (msg) 09:13, 7 October 2015 (UTC)

No damage done, just that I am rowing in the opposite direction: avoiding crowded categories, even the slightly crowded ones :) Anyways, any kind of collaboration is welcome, even the undos, because we don't have all the same organisation in mind. Cheers.
PS: Keep an eye on these music categories! --Ruthven (msg) 09:37, 7 October 2015 (UTC)
In my opinion, COM:Overcat (a rule said that the media under sub-categories should not be appeared on super-category) is useful on ideal hierarchy, however on the real situations, several issues seem to be occurred.
1. Invisibility of subcategory contents: on the current user interface of Media Wiki, the contents in sub-categories are not visible from super-category, so we can't check the important information at a glance. Even worse, if we strictly applied COM:Overcat rule, valuable information tends to hide under the deep hierarchy, and the less important media tend to remain on the top of super-category. As a result, for grasping the contents of each subcategories, we are required the considerable amount of efforts.
(Note: on Wikimedia Commons, possibly emphasizing of important media should be take place on gallery page; however I feel it is inconvenient because gallery is not automatically updated)
2. Uncertainty on the hierarchical relationship: although Guitarra morisca have been considered as one origin of Guitar family instruments, however to be exact, Guitarra morisca itself is not a proper member of Guitar family instruments. The actual relationship between them may be "a candidate of ancestors/descendants" where the multiplicity of relationship is n:n, and the relationship itself is uncertainty.
(I've already created similar sub-categories on more specific contexts [1][2], however it does not yet became popular possibly due to its redundant naming)
3. Mismatches between the "hierarchical categorization" and the "actual relationship between concepts": above type of relationship can't be exactly expressed on conventional hierarchical categorization.
It is really headache. In my opinion, a skill for avoiding this issue without much efforts may be: (1) giving up the strict application of COM:Overcat, (2) not worrying about the slightly crowded-state of super-category, and (3) when the number of media on super-category exceeds 200 files, try to sub-categorize these. Thanks for reading my long comment. --Clusternote (talk) 11:38, 7 October 2015 (UTC)
PS: shorter summary: The hierarchical categorizations and its rules tend to accompany the fundamental defects. If we tried to apply rules too strictly, the defects and adverse effects may become significant. In my opinion, for avoiding the above issues, sometimes we should keep away from the strict application of rules, and also we should intentionally leave some type of redundancies. --Clusternote (talk) 12:52, 7 October 2015 (UTC)

Musical instrument categories

Hi, Clusternote. The reason I have changed those categories is that a name like "Musical instruments by brass" doesn't make sense. It isn't correct grammar. The only way it would make sense is if there were instruments made of different kinds of brass, and the categories in it were for those different kinds. Before you change any more of them back, please explain what you are thinking with categories like this. Thanks. --Auntof6 (talk) 09:20, 21 January 2016 (UTC)

@Auntof6: : Hi, Auntof6. The naming convention of these categories have been determined by other expert Administrators for several years ago, thus I don't want to be bothered by these things.
As of Category:Brass instruments, conventionally it have been used as a name of Trumpet-family instruments for several centuries (See Brass instrument). Thus we should choice another name(s) for "musical instruments made with brass". Category:Musical instruments by brass, and Category:Musical instrument parts by brass are these. --Clusternote (talk) 09:28, 21 January 2016 (UTC)
OK, the meaning for "brass instruments" makes sense: it's a class of instrument that doesn't include every instrument that happens to be made of brass, right? It's just that "by brass" doesn't make sense, so "made of brass" would be better. What you think? --Auntof6 (talk) 09:32, 21 January 2016 (UTC)
@Auntof6: Thanks for your quick response. 1st sentence: Yes. 2nd sentence: I agree with you. --Clusternote (talk) 09:35, 21 January 2016 (UTC)
OK, sounds good. Would you like to make the change, or would you like me to do it? --Auntof6 (talk) 09:36, 21 January 2016 (UTC)
@Auntof6: Oh, sorry for my late response. (As far as the change of naming conventions), I'm glad if you could change these. --Clusternote (talk) 12:54, 21 January 2016 (UTC)

Overcategorization

Hi there and thanks for your uploads of CF Martin guitars. I wanted to point out that you are adding many of these images to too many categories. For example, I removed several unnecessary categories from File:C. F. Martin Spanish-style guitar (c.1845), Martin Style 3-17 (1859) - C.F. Martin Guitar Factory 2012-08-06 - 011 (clip).jpg. Not only that, but I couldn't tell the difference between Category:C. F. Martin Style 17 and Category:Martin 3-17, but I am not an expert on guitars, so I left both on that image. Please read COM:OVERCAT for more details. Thanks. howcheng {chat} 21:05, 1 June 2016 (UTC)

Another question: I notice that many (if not all) of the files in Category:C. F. Martin Guitar Museum are also in Category:C. F. Martin Guitar Factory Tour, and many of those are in Category:C. F. Martin Guitar Factory. I don't understand this category scheme. Is the museum inside the factory? And is the tour category full of photos that you took as part of touring that factory? If so, that one doesn't seem particularly necessary. Thanks. howcheng {chat} 16:08, 2 June 2016 (UTC)

If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

The file probably has been deleted. If you've got all required information, request undeletion providing this information and the link to the concerned file ([[:File:Robert Hope-Jones.jpg]]).

If you created the content yourself, enter {{Own}} as the source. If you did not add a licensing template, you must add one. You may use, for example, {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} or {{Cc-zero}} to release certain rights to your work.

If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!
