Query re. your preferred attribution in the MediaWiki CREDITS
[edit]Hello Cmuelle8! If you get a chance, please could you take a look & reply to this question on Phabricator? Feel free to reply here if that's easier for you! (I'm leaving a message on your Commons talkpage as it's your most active wiki :)) Best, βββa smart kitten[meow] 19:13, 3 November 2025 (UTC)
- We've had a bad start, anyway .., but if I may aid in giving some humble advice for the future: It may not be the best idea to wave with Code of Conduct or point to other pre-written best practice at the first-best impression of an unpleasant reaction of the person you're discussing with on wiki projects. Unfortunately, the CoC is often used as a shield, when it rather should be a guideline on how to cooperate. It is not in place to hinder freedom of speech.
- While you do have initiated my reaction on phabricator, it did not, at least not intentionally so, target you in person, but rather the process of perfecting a minor file of the mediawiki distribution while other files in need of care and maintenance with a higher relevance for the proper functioning of this piece of server software meanwhile (?) lack manpower, effort, sometimes ideas or the courage of modification. Most devs lack the vanity to truely care about an enrollment on highscore, credit or attribution lists. If we are at a point where those people have to disguise themselves and this attitude, and maybe start to trade technical expertise for proper speech, this may mark the beginning of the end of mediawiki and similar software projects. The project needs to preserve and attract people reading and understanding software code. The CoC is also important, but it is not a measure to quiet down concerns about community or software stack health. It should shield against harassment, insults, edit wars, personal attacks, etc. - not every concern raised is an insult just because it intially raises discomfort in the recipient.
- Sometimes people pair/coop on a temporary basis, and sometimes they do not at all for lack of common interests or goals. Not every contributor values conversation, which does not make them bad or inappropriate contributors per se; there is pluralism and sometimes the CoC and other guidelines fail to reflect that. If we are to accept the only contributions by means (/in the realm) of these, we fail to acknowledge this pluralism among contributors. So it is worth the effort to pivot the point of view while reading and reinterpret before getting the big stuff. --212.99.192.80 12:21, 5 November 2025 (UTC)
