Hello, Dennis Bratland!

Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Hi Dbratland

I saw you deleted the Original 10th Anniversary "Rocker Reunion Pissup" Poster, 1993. I think this is incorrect.

It is our poster. We organised the event. I took the picture. I give permission.

What do I need to say on the form?

Thank you.

I don't have the ability to delete anything. I tagged the file for possible copyright violation, and an administrator decided it should be deleted. It's obvious that it's a picture of a framed poster, possibly taken by a passerby. It looks nothing like an image the owner of the poster's copyright would use. And there is no copyright notice visible on the poster -- common sense would tell you there is probably a © symbol at the bottom.

You need to add proof that you have the rights to this poster to the new version, or it's just going to get deleted again. The fact that you own a copy of a poster does not make you the copyright owner. --Dbratland (talk) 19:07, 16 April 2011 (UTC)

Category:The Stranger (newspaper)[edit]

You placed several items in Category:The Stranger (newspaper) simply because it was used as a cited source for a statement made in the description. For example, you did this with File:Seattle - Club Z 02.jpg. This is not how we normally use categories on Commons: they should have something to do with either the source or content of the file itself, not citations in the description. Where you have done that on my photos I have reverted you. You may want to look through your edits to see if there are others you should revert. - Jmabel ! talk 04:49, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

Yeah, I felt it was only semi-Stranger related. The Frizzelle article was fairly notable and the main reason for the photos. But I can see the reason for not having them in that category. --Dennis Bratland (talk) 15:32, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

Good to see you today! In order that we don't upload too many similar images, besides whatever other categories you add, please add Category:Images from Wiki Loves Monuments Seattle expedition 2012-09-15 to your images. Timing belt[edit]

Please don't de-categorise these non-camshaft images from Category:Timing belts. To clear up this issue, both here and at en:WP, where belts and camshaft belts had been mixed together the categories, have now been split into Category:Timing belts and Category:Timing belts (camshaft). See en:Timing belt, en:Toothed belt and en:Timing belt (camshaft). Your removal of these cats is inappropriate and unconstructive. Andy Dingley (talk) 09:28, 26 April 2013 (UTC)

What is your basis for calling a drive belt a timing belt? Do you think a bicycle or motorcycle chain drive is a timing chain? Can you explain what the meaning of the word "timing" is in this context, if not Category:Timing belts has a clear definition: "Timing belts are toothed belts used as non-slip belt drives with a positive timing relationship between input and output shafts." Is it because some automotive timing belts have been repurposed in bicycles? Repurpsing it that way changes it from a timing belt to a drive belt.

A new category Category:Timing belts (camshaft) misses the point: whether or not the machine uses a camshaft is not what makes it a timing belt. It is that it maintains a positive or indexing relationship between the input and output shafts, on any kind of machine, not just a car engine.

I notice that you "cite" yourself over on en.wikipedia, in articles you've written. en:Timing belt (camshaft), en:Timing belt and en:Toothed belt are egregiously unsourced, particularly in the long paragraphs without a single footnote where you argue, in violation of WP:NOR, that drive belts are timing belts. Do you have independent sources that treat drive belts as timing belts? If not, these Wikipedia articles are going to need to be renamed and drastically rewritten. --Dennis Bratland (talk) 15:22, 26 April 2013 (UTC)

The fact that I have several trade catalogues that describe them as "timing belts". It's a common name for them in widespread use. Admittedly one of several (read the WP article). The WP article is at en:toothed belt just to simplify the disambiguation. This category is here at Category:timing belts for historical reasons. If you want to rename it to Category:Toothed belts to align the two, then that would be reasonable.
They're used on bikes (both) because they're a positive drive that requires less belt tension for a given drive torque than belts that work by pure friction. Note that these belts (to be counted as timing belts) are not only toothed belts, they're also toothed pulleys. There are many vee and polygroove belts that are "toothed" too, but they're still just friction belts, the pulleys are plain and their teeth are only there to reduce internal bending friction. The belts illustrated here, also the Harley primary drive if we can find a picture, is a positive drive, thus justifying the term "timing belt", even when this isn't their primary reason.
As for unsourced, then feel free to make a positive contribution that goes forwards, by expanding it. This was written in five minutes flat to clear up the crap previously there that mixeed camshafts into everything, and particularly to start addressing two manufacturer-specific belt articles that were at risk of becoming our only coverage on the toothed belt in general. Andy Dingley (talk) 16:08, 26 April 2013 (UTC)
Chains are positive drive too. It misses the point, which is that in a cycle drive, it is of no consequence which position the driven wheel is in relation to the input shaft. There is no timing involved. Just drive. I can see how sometimes a drive belt might be called a "timing belt" due to familiarity with car parts, but it's not the most common terminology, and it's clearly misleading. I'm going to propose moving en:Timing belt (camshaft) to en:Timing belt and generally reconfiguring this set of articles to make the distinction between timing/indexing and positive drive and plain belt drive (smooth belts) more clear.

I don't mean to offend; I know how valuable your Wikipedia contributions are. But I think this one thing needs to be fixed to better conform with sources and common usage. Cheers! --Dennis Bratland (talk) 16:16, 26 April 2013 (UTC)

Temple of Music photos[edit]

Hello, In the tunnel to the University Street link station are some sandblasted tiles which together comprise a work by Erin Shie Palmer called The Temple of Music, derived from concepts inherent within ‘The Temple of Music’ by Robert Fludd. Do you think photos of individual tiles from this set would violate Ms. Palmer's digital rights? Visitor7 (talk) 19:55, 6 October 2013 (UTC)

I've never seen the work in person and I can't find any photos online that give me a good idea of what it consists of. I would ask User:Jmabel. He's probably been to the University station and he would be able to guess to what degree it's eligible for copyright. --Dennis Bratland (talk) 21:57, 6 October 2013 (UTC)

A9CAD - A9Tech Inc.[edit]

Hello, Dennis Bratland!

I'd like to add some useful information in article about free program for drawing A9CAD. But, unfortunately, all the data that I have already included in the article. However, this program was developed by A9Tech Inc., the head office of which is located in Redmond, Washington, USA. But unfortunately I can't find online anything about it. So, since you live near Redmond, could you share information about the company A9Tech Inc? Maybe you heard something about this company, or maybe she is still exists? Perhaps you have may seen some notice in the local newspaper about the firm. For example, getting useful information I could add the history of the releases of the program A9CAD in article. And also, could you take pictures of their office? It would be great, if in article will appear some good photos.

Note: I wrote to the library of the Washington state. And a few days later got a response that it was found a mention on the website of the Department of Revenue of Washington State. Thus became known mailing address of the organization and the years of its existence. Considering the satellite maps, I realized that this place is almost next to the office of Microsoft Corp. Or rather here. In addition, the city has many other interesting office that could also be a picture.

Here's a big request :-)

— With best regards, Донор () 11:20, 8 October 2016 (UTC).

@Донор: the company no longer exists. The Washington Department of Revenue record you found says the company has been defunct since 2009. The free download hasn't been updated since version 2.2 in 2005. The address is not an office, it's a residence; A9Tech was an online company with no brick-and-mortar office. There's nothing to photograph except the residential street the former company received mail at. I can tell you A9Tech appears nowhere in the archives of the Seattle Times, Seattle P-I, Puget Sound Business Journal, or any of several other local databases I checked. Download.cnet.com has the most detailed information about A9CAD.

I found passing mention of A9CAD via General OneFile:

That's it. These tell us nothing we didn't already know. I won't say we failed or found nothing. I think we successfully proved that A9Tech was not a significant company, and we know that neither the company or it's software ever attracted any significant coverage.

The only mystery left is who is paying to keep the domain name a9tech.com active and host the content. From what I can tell at WHOIS, the domain is owned by Domains By Proxy, LLC, but who is behind that? I don't know. Maybe somebody with better domain registry knowledge can track it down. --Dennis Bratland (talk) 18:33, 8 October 2016 (UTC)

Amazing! Thank you very much. Very fast, detailed and quality answer. I will create the discussion/talk page of the article, where I will post useful links, including your very detailed response. Many thanks again! — With best regards, Донор () 19:29, 8 October 2016 (UTC).

Going commando[edit]

You're mixing things. "Going commando" is not (or not only) about exhibitionism, you're right, and not only about women, you're right as well. But the fact is : it's obviously more difficult to illustrate such a practice for men and for non-exhibitionist people. So yes, the only illustrations we have for that topic are only exhibitionist women. That doesn't mean we should remove the category from those files. --TwoWings * to talk or not to talk... 21:33, 11 June 2017 (UTC)

That's like saying it's difficult to get pictures of the moons of Pluto therefore it's OK to put Earth's moon in the same category. Nobody promised you that you would get an illustration of everything under the Sun, and some things exist that can't be illustrated. The central point of the prhase "going commando" and discussion of it is that in public view nobody knows if a person is wearing underwear. A normal photo of a person wearing clothes is an illustration of what going commando looks like: nothing to see.

The only purpose of this is to find ways to display more porn on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia sites. --Dennis Bratland (talk) 22:28, 11 June 2017 (UTC)

Sorry, but you're being ridiculous. Normally, I can't see your heart, so by your reasonig we should never have an image of open heart surgery. The important factor about "going commando" is no underwear is being worn, the only way to display that no underwear is being worn is to show that no underwear is being worn. That "normally" someone going commando would be showing what's going on under the clothes is irrelevant -- we might as well put up a picture of the Pope and claim it's an example of going commando because, hey, who can tell? Beyond My Ken (talk) 01:26, 12 June 2017 (UTC)
Open heart surgery requires the chest being open. It is naturally possible to see images of the heart during open heart surgery. Because of the "open" thing. Going commando requires one's normal clothes to be worn normally. Wearing no underwear, while also not wearing one's clothes normally, is called being nude. Or flashing. Going commando and nudity are two different things. The definition of going commando is foregoing underwear while otherwise being normally dressed.

Of course, you could illustrate the heart or other internal organ in their normal position and state of enclosure, using a convention like a cross section (Category:Anatomy, cross-sectional, or ghosted/phantom, cutaway, or exploded drawings. I suppose one could illustrate going commando by with one of these difficult technical illustration methods, with their outer wear in it's usual position (not hiked up provocatively) and this would be correct and accurate. It would be a silly use of anyone's time, but that would be valid, and it's proof that a corret illustration is not impossible. Note that nobody has any difficulty understanding the words "not wearing underwear", so there isn't a need. Graphs of demographic data would be useful: who goes commando? How frequently? How has rate changed over the last 100 years? Useful illustrations could exist, aside from this porn.

You're right about how silly it would be to put up a picture of the Pope. But it would also be silly to illustrate an article about the Pope with a picture of what you would see if you lifted up his robes and peeked under.

It's faulty reasoning to begin with the premise that some illustration, no matter how inaccurate, must be found, and then arrive at the conclusion (inevitably) that the best you can do is porn. If these photos were not erotica, I might take some of this seriously. If the photos of men in Category:Upskirt were being categorized as going commando, I might believe these protestations of innocent intent. But no. --Dennis Bratland (talk) 02:27, 12 June 2017 (UTC)

Moment of collision with Fitzgerald unclear from marine traffic data ??[edit]

Hello Dennis, good image you put in [1].

However, the first turn right by ACX Crystal may also have an other explanation then being the collision.

A faulty ship's steering machine controller (or faulty wiring or electric connectors between its different elements) can cause the ships's rudder to suddenly go totally left or right. It's a bit like with power steering in cars: if the reporting back-elements (in a ship this is either a small hydraulic differential piston requiring maintenance and oil, or an electric system requiring unblocked cooling of thyristors, clean contacts and electric power supply) fail to report back that the rudder is already moved into desire position, then the steering machine continues to move the rudder further out of the middel position.

On the ship where I manned the bridge, it happenend once, and switching off auto pilot did not help, it scared the shit out of me. Only switching over to the spare steering machine helps, but if the ship's mate doesn't realize this immediately, the ship can veer off track wildly, in a matter of seconds.

In this case, I suspect the steering failed for the first time on the place that you marked as the place of collision, the steering got back on quickly, ship goes back to course, then the steering failed again causing a u-turn, then it came back on again and the ships mate decided to, for the moment go along with the traffic the other way, while the engineer and captain were called up to sort it out.

My guess is that then, while it was overtaking the Fitsgerald parallel at relatively close distance, then the steering machine of the ACX Crystal failed again, turning the ship left again, hitting the war ship quite suddenly.

This is where the speed suddenly goes down a lot, most likely because when the realized they would hit the Fitsgerald and could not steer, they put the propulsion in reverse.

I think its very unlikely that the contanainership hit the destroyer without stopping, even without loosing speed. So the first to erratic changes of course were likely not a collision but a failing of the steering equipment.

That would also explain why the Fitsgerald reported the collsion at 2.30, while the container ship reported the problems to have started at 1.30.

Now this is all speculation, but from someone with a lot of experience on sea, and the claim that the first change of course was the actual place of the collision, has not been corroborated directly by any witness. And it doesn't match the evidence of the speed and course graph that you provided.

Maybe consider adding 'possible' to place one, and add a second 'possible place of collision' ?

Cheers, Pieter Smit.

I don't discover these conclusions from guessing or speculation or deduction. The purpose of the illustrations is to summarize what is already published in reliable sources. If the sources change it, I would change it to match. --Dennis Bratland (talk) 16:19, 20 June 2017 (UTC)
