Tag photo for bot[edit]

  • Q1: Is there a user can place on a file to trigger the Bot to extract location data from that file and place coordinates on the description? This could be used for older files where there is location data, but the Bot had not looked at the file yet.
  • Q2: please re-run the Bot on File:Styrofoam Boat 003.jpg. It generated an error when it was run originally.

Thanks. Semper Fi! FieldMarine (talk) 17:23, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

Hello FieldMarine! There is such a tag, it is {{GPS EXIF}}. Please note, that the bot is running less frequently currently, due to limited server resources. As for Q2, what error did the bot make on this image... ...oooohhhh, sorry I get it. I'll have to fix the bot first. --Dschwen (talk) 17:47, 4 June 2013 (UTC)
Hello Dschwen, I have uploaded a lot of photos (just shy of 200) to the GPS EXIF page and was wondering how often the bot does its duty? Thanks, mr.choppers (talk)-en- 22:33, 18 June 2013 (UTC)
The bot should be back on its daily schedule. Turns out a database schema on the toolserver was changed for some reason and that change utterly destroyed the performance. I've switched to a database they did not manage to break yet ;-). --Dschwen (talk) 02:57, 25 June 2013 (UTC)

Bot edit limits[edit]

Hey, per the discussion where do you think would be a good location to start the discussion? I feel we should leave performance issues to the devs whom can fine tune the servers as needed based on the actual load. Edit count isn't the only thing that has an impact on performance after all...

The VI logo is nice, but...[edit]

Hi Daniel,

I had a look at File:Cassanéa de Mondonville, Jean-Joseph, par Cochin et Delattre, BNF Gallica.jpg and noticed that ever since June 9 VICbot had added a VI template twice per day on the same file page. So, there are now a whole bunch of VI templates on that file page. And it sure looks nice with all them VI logos, but perhaps it is a little - ahem - excessive. Any idea what has happened/is happening? --Slaunger (talk) 20:03, 12 June 2013 (UTC)

Best wishes, --Slaunger (talk) 20:03, 12 June 2013 (UTC)

Apparently, VICbot has stopped its VI template tagging, so problem fixed, I guess...
Time to archive your +100 subjects on you talk page? Just saying... --Slaunger (talk) 06:32, 16 June 2013 (UTC)

Now he processes the same candidates repeatedly, but deosnt remove them from the candidate list. User_talk:Ikar.us#Valued_Image_Promotion_5 --Ikar.us (talk) 15:27, 17 June 2013 (UTC)

Aha! I think I know what is going on... --Dschwen (talk) 02:02, 18 June 2013 (UTC)
I've removed (some of) the affected candidates from the list. --Ikar.us (talk) 17:12, 19 June 2013 (UTC)

Appropriately Licensed[edit]

You participated at the earlier discussion on licence choice for Featured Pictures. A number of users felt that such restrictions should be made at policy level. Please comment at Commons:Requests for comment/AppropriatelyLicensed. This is a proposal to amend this licence policy to disallow future uploads where the sole licence is inappropriate for the media (e.g., GFDL for images). In earlier discussions there were a number of comments that, while reasonable opinions, did not align with Wikimedia's mission for free content. Please read the FAQ before commenting. Thanks -- Colin (talk) 22:55, 15 June 2013 (UTC)

-- Rillke(q?) 16:09, 20 July 2013 (UTC)

{{map}}[edit]

Daniel, I was quietly tinkering lately with a new {{Map}} template which should be placed above {{information}}, {{Artwork}}, etc. and allow uniform format and display for map metadata. Could you have a look at it as it has several options for displaying different coordinates and is encouraging people to create kml overlays to the maps. I will open the template for a wider discussion soon, but just wanted to make sure that it is compatible with your tools. --Jarekt (talk) 14:31, 19 June 2013 (UTC)

Yeah, it looks like it is compatible. I'm thinking about adding map overlay display to the WMA. --Dschwen (talk) 16:02, 27 June 2013 (UTC)

Commons:Bots/Requests/SamoaBot 2[edit]

Hi, you said there that you could have helped me with "http range requests". I have now some experience with Pywikipediabot, and could easily create a script to fix SVG issues. So, can those requests speed up the job? --Ricordisamoa 17:27, 20 June 2013 (UTC)

Yes, look at headers = { 'User-Agent' : useragent, 'Range' : 'bytes=%d-%d' % ( of, of+bs ) } in User:Dschwen/Gifanalysisbot. Sorry 4 new messages on the talk page and I'm taking off to a weekend camping trip. --Dschwen (talk) 17:11, 21 June 2013 (UTC)

Problems with QICbot at June 29[edit]

Hello! The QICbot extracted the promoted images from the candidate list this night. But it neither tagged the images nor did it inform the authors. Can you take a look at the problem please? Thanks--Dirtsc (talk) 11:27, 29 June 2013 (UTC)

Yeah, I will. In the meantime the extracted images can be put back on the candidate list. I can do that too, I have a javascript snippet that makes it easy. --Dschwen (talk) 01:03, 30 June 2013 (UTC)

IIP problem?[edit]

Daniel, any idea why the IIP on your toolserver.org account is serving a mostly grey image for this really-high resolution image? See [1] and [2]. Is there a known image size limit for IIP or does it have to do with the workflow from wikimedia > toolserver? Thanks! Earthsound (talk) 17:26, 3 July 2013 (UTC)

Yes, the conversion process on the toolserver was killed due to excessive memory consumption. This is due to a bug in the installed version of VIPS. I filed a ticket a few months ago to get VIPS updated. But apparently that hasn't happened yet. I'll fix the image manually and try to follow up on the ticket. Thanks for letting me know. --Dschwen (talk) 21:20, 5 July 2013 (UTC)

Problem in VI[edit]

I'm sorry to ask you, but Bot promoted 10 times on this picture and it was not labeled this. Thank you for what you can do. --Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 16:52, 23 July 2013 (UTC)

Ok, let me do a few manual runs to see what is going on. --Dschwen (talk) 14:16, 24 July 2013 (UTC)
Hm, sorry, I'm having trouble tracking this problem down because the logs are missing for the vic bot. --Dschwen (talk) 02:29, 28 July 2013 (UTC)
If it is complicated: not continue. Image has ceased to be promoted. For the image that has not received the label is not serious. Good day. --Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 06:06, 28 July 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, but I still would like to know what happened, as this may repeat some day and I'll be faced with the same problem. Did you manually tag the image? --Dschwen (talk) 13:39, 28 July 2013 (UTC)
Ok I did everything manually, here seems fine. --Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 16:17, 28 July 2013 (UTC)

(zwei Punkte) vorm Namen entfernen. --Dschwen (talk) 02:25, 28 July 2013 (UTC)
--Jean11 (talk) 18:27, 31 July 2013 (UTC)

GPS broken data[edit]

Guten Tag Dschwen, in meinen gestern hochgeladenen Bilder , z.B. Was sehe ich falsch? Danke Gruß --Pelz (talk) 16:42, 30 July 2013 (UTC)

Hallo. Der letzte bot run war voellig verkorkst. Der fehler lag nicht bei Deinem Bild. Ich versuche gerade das zu reparieren. --Dschwen (talk) 23:24, 30 July 2013 (UTC)

SSM map colour[edit]

As you clearly recognized the two sides of the debate (I believe you put it as "making the map easy to read for our colorblind users AND have uniformity across the maps that we have is one faction, and the other faction is... I like the other blue better"), would it be terribly out of place for me to request you add your voice, which ever direction it may be, to the RfC? Fry1989 eh? 19:40, 1 August 2013 (UTC)

Done. --Dschwen (talk) 19:47, 1 August 2013 (UTC)
Thank you. I am of course not trying to canvas, I've placed neutral RfC notices on a few related Wikipedia talk pages inviting comment, and I would have welcomed your voice even if it was against my proposal. Fry1989 eh? 19:53, 1 August 2013 (UTC)
I know that Fry. I just tried to preempt any "spectacular discovery" of a conspiracy ;-). --Dschwen (talk) 20:38, 1 August 2013 (UTC)

Locations by Dschwenbot[edit]

&lg, [w.] 06:09, 5 August 2013 (UTC)

Ok, bin allerdings jetzt auf Reise. Kann also etwas dauern. --Dschwen (talk) 14:02, 5 August 2013 (UTC)

[w.] 20:15, 30 November 2013 (UTC)

Andere Frage, Preview vs. Output[edit]

[w.] 06:12, 5 August 2013 (UTC)

{{LargeImage}} before summary header[edit]

I've noticed that DschwenBot is adding {{LargeImage}} before the =={{int:filedesc}}== line on certain images; see for example this diff. Would it be possible to add it after the line instead so that it appears continuous with the {{Information}} box? Thanks, Pi.1415926535 (talk) 17:01, 8 August 2013 (UTC)

yes, I'm at Wikimania right now and just learned about mwparserfromhell. I'll be using this soon to improve this bot.--Dschwen (talk) 01:47, 9 August 2013 (UTC)
Solid, thanks. Enjoy Wikimania! Pi.1415926535 (talk) 13:13, 9 August 2013 (UTC)

A VIC not processed by VICBot[edit]

Hello Dschwen,
Could you find why VICbot didn't process that VIC, Commons:Valued image candidates/Mariensteg Wernstein Neuburg am Inn.jpg, closed few days ago? The VIC seems correct to me. Today and previous days, VICbot processed other candidates but not that one. Thank you in advance for your eye. --Myrabella (talk) 12:51, 9 August 2013 (UTC)

VI-Tag jeden Tag im gleichen Bild[edit]

Hallo Dschwen,

Was läuft denn da schief?

Gruß, --aconcagua (talk) 05:36, 11 August 2013 (UTC)

Same question as above :) In addition, VICbot posted that image multple times on Commons:Valued images/Recently promoted (each day since the promotion I guess)->[3]. Regards, --Myrabella (talk) 07:55, 13 August 2013 (UTC)

Commons:Bureaucrats/Requests/Russavia (de-Bureaucrat)[edit]

I have very serious reservations about this process. First off how this vote came to start is problematic. Secondly we seem to have a non-Commons community (en.wikipedia) attempting to decide our Bureaucrats for us given the evidence of canvassing at least through Jimbo's talk page on en.wikipedia. And thirdly I do not think the issue is advertised enough for the general community to know.

It is in the nature of Commons as a service project to be tightly connected to projects such as the english wikipedia. They are forced to entrust us their images which are in use in their project. It seems only fair to me that users from sister projects have a say in administrative interna of commons. I agree though, that a bit more advertising of this de-crat request may be helpful. --Dschwen (talk) 16:49, 13 August 2013 (UTC)
Didn't you know we are just a satellite project? Now, you do it.-- Rillke(q?) 17:38, 13 August 2013 (UTC)
Actually satellite implies a mass-ratio that is a bit backwards, given that commons is the largest wikimedia project of them all, by far. We are the sun, everything is revolving around us! ;-) --Dschwen (talk) 17:50, 13 August 2013 (UTC)
I have nothing against members of sibling projects commenting on the de-Bureaucrat request as my reservations are about the process. I do not like how we do not have an agreed process on how to handle the issue and as a result I will not be satisfied with either possible outcome. I think other members of the commons community may share this sentiment.
En.wikipedia community going out of their way to dictate the "administrative interna" is only a part of the reservations I have on the issue. Commons has special needs that other wikis do not and the commons community is aware of it. When people from sibling projects talk about trust issues towards a Bureaucrat they have never interacted with in a community they do not normally engage in any discussions, I get very uneasy. These are classic signs of canvassing which tends to only poison sensible discussions.
I disagree with the notion that commons is the "star" of the Wikimedia Star System. At best I would go for a binary star system analogy where En.Wikipedia is the more massive star. En.Wikipedia is by far largest in terms of its userbase. En.wikipedia can dominate any and all discussions here which is very unfair to all other sibling projects including other language editions of Wikipedia. The mass of a project shouldn't dictate the outcome of discussions. There is no point of a commons community if we are going to constantly bow to the moral panic of En.Wikipedia.

QICbot is stalled[edit]

Hello Dschwen,
It seems that QICbot has trouble at the moment. On August 11, it extracted processed nominations (action reverted by A. Savin since) and moved previously categorized images from Commons:Quality images/Recently promoted, but it didn't tag the newly promoted images nor notified the users. Last action at 04:53 UTC, August 11. The previous day it worked properly was 8 August, see QICbot contribs. Thank you in advance for your eye and possible action. --Myrabella (talk) 06:32, 13 August 2013 (UTC)

Hi Myrabella, I f*&^ed this up personally. I ran the bot manually without a screen session on unreliable wifi. Quickly after that I was on travel. The bot should resume normal operations now. --Dschwen (talk) 16:09, 13 August 2013 (UTC

Thanks and Question[edit]

Thank you Dschwen for my usurp. I noticed on the SUL page that the Commons entry is listed as unattached, when it should be attached (given that I'm the same person). At first I thought that it would be fixed automatically when the system does its single user merge thing. But I'm thinking that it may successfully attach the account (good), but also erase history as if it's a different user currently (bad). What do you think will happen? I would like to keep my history. Thane (talk) 23:52, 26 August 2013 (UTC)

Change Username Step 5[edit]

Hello Dschwen: thanks for your instruction. I checked Step 5 as requested and both "Rafaelcarmen" and "Pronacampo9" are definitely mine. My request was first made on 21 August. Grateful if you could tell me if there is anything else you want me to do? (92.25.187.97 18:17, 27 August 2013 (UTC))

Did you provide the diff link to an edit that confirms this? --Dschwen (talk) 19:29, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
  • Hello again: I have now completed phase 2 of the Step 5 process. I have pasted the url string in the "Change Username" main page as my own name does not come up in 'Edit'. Re:

File:USFlag.jpg[edit]

Please undo the deletion and redirect of this file. A bitmap is not a duplicate of an .svg file, and a redirect of one extension to the other is even more inappropriate. The .jpg may be superseded, but that does not mean "duplicate" and the existing bitmaps should be retained. See Commons talk:Superseded images policy. Thanks ;-) Carl Lindberg (talk) 05:50, 28 August 2013 (UTC)

Hi Carl, I'm aware of superseeded, but applying it in this case would be wikilawyering. I deleted the file minutes after it was uploaded. Do you really think that we need yet another US flag file, and one in JPEG format of all formats?! There is no case where a small JPG file is needed that cannot be met by the SVG file. The flag oddly is a rather controversial image. There have been countless discussion until a consensus on the colors alone was finally reached. --Dschwen (talk) 13:10, 28 August 2013 (UTC)
Ah OK, didn't realize it was a recent upload. Seems like it was a duplicate, just not of an SVG. The redirect really isn't appropriate, though, and should be removed -- bitmaps and vectors are fundamentally different types and a .jpg URL should not resolve to an SVG file I don't think. Carl Lindberg (talk) 23:58, 29 August 2013 (UTC)
You're right. I've deleted the redirect now. --Dschwen (talk) 00:15, 30 August 2013 (UTC)

Why not Speedy delete?[edit]

Hello Dschwen, why this image cannot be speedy deleted? it was used in a self-promotional article (created by the same user, from blogspot c. vitae) in spanish wikipedia and speedy deleted today. Greetings. --GM83 (talk) 06:54, 29 August 2013 (UTC)

I guess the the only reason I declined that one was that I did not see how the file violated the licensing guidelines. What did you mean by that? --Dschwen (talk) 13:36, 29 August 2013 (UTC) P.S.: Double check if your deletion is really covered by the Commons:Criteria for speedy deletion. --Dschwen (talk) 14:22, 29 August 2013 (UTC)
I fixed up the DR, and listed it (otherwise nobody will ever see it). Let's see what happens. --Dschwen (talk) 17:02, 29 August 2013 (UTC)

Why deleted?[edit]

The footballer on the picture is now 79 years old , the photographer is unknown and might be dead ,the picture has probably over 60 years. I don't know anyone who have the copyrights of the picture . --MoroccanMuslim (talk) 00:53, 30 August 2013 (UTC)

Hi MoroccanMuslim, please refresh my memory (I had to delete a few hundred images today alone :-(). I'd be happy to look at the deletion again, but to be honest "probably over 60", "might be dead", "I don't know anyone who have the copyrights of the picture" does not sound like we should keep the image. We're going to need a source an author and a date of death for the author (which country's laws is the picture subject to?). --Dschwen (talk) 02:29, 30 August 2013 (UTC)

The location is in the area which is the subject of the article It's in Morocco. The picture was taken in 1951/1952 and it's mentionned on the picture in the only available source http://www.casa-lesroches.com/les%20talents%20sportifs%20aux%20RN.htm#MAYET the picture that i want to publish is part of the first picture in the chapter talking about the old football player concerned. that's the file : File:Patrice mayet.jpg --MoroccanMuslim (talk) 16:21, 30 August 2013 (UTC)

Notification about possible deletion[edit]

Commons-emblem-issue.svg Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue.
Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Hello, bot problem[edit]

I noticed that your usually amazing location bot seems to be having a problem with my photos. A whole host of photos of mine were marked as "image does not contain or contains broken GPS data; removed gps exif request template". I went and checked a couple of them, such as this photo and they all have exif data listed in the metadata. I am going through them manually for now, but maybe this needs checking? Thanks and cheers, mr.choppers (talk)-en- 19:52, 11 September 2013 (UTC)

Hi Mr. Choppers. Sorry about the trouble! The bot is scheduled to run on a grid system. That means the execution host can be any of a number of servers in the toolserver cluster. It seems that one of the servers has a faulty configuration that causes the EXIF extraction to fail. My bot did not trap this error correctly and assumed that no data was present. I'm rerunning it now to catch your unprocessed images. --Dschwen (talk) 17:03, 12 September 2013 (UTC)
Cool, thanks. It was really boring doing it manually. mr.choppers (talk)-en- 16:04, 13 September 2013 (UTC)

Bot request[edit]

Hello Dschwen,
I wanted to ask you if one of your bots could do a task for me, or if I should ask someone else for this task. I want to add a template with my name to all my pictures to avoid wrong uses of my pictures outside Wikimedia projects, but I can't do it by hand. All my pictures are within this category and most of them have {{self|cc-by-sa-3.0}} or {{self|cc-by-sa-3.0-es}}. I'd like to change that license like I've done in this image. If I could also change the line of "|Author=" in the descriptions it would be great. Could you do it or do you care about other kinds of tasks? I can ask someone else if you think that will be better, I'm not really in the "bot world". Thank you so much!! --Kadellar (talk) 16:58, 16 September 2013 (UTC)

Kadellar, I would like to help you with this, but currently I'm so busy IRL that I cannot make a commitment. Sorry. --Dschwen (talk) 17:02, 16 September 2013 (UTC)
Kadellar, you can just use COM:VFC to do such tasks, you do not need a bot. darkweasel94 17:09, 16 September 2013 (UTC)

Was hast du noch so gesehen?

Unfortunate comments by yourself on Meta[edit]

Dschwen, you made the following comments at Meta:Community_Logo/Request_for_consultation#Support

"This seems reasonable. I appreciate that WarX created the logo, but he released it into PD. That's the end of it. --Dschwen (talk) 15:32, 24 September 2013 (UTC)"

For a Commons bureaucrat, these comments show either that you lack an understanding between copyright and trademarks, or that you are simply acting as a "yes man" for the WMF. It is very difficult to take your words any other way than the way they are written, so could you possibly explain why you believe that once an image is released into PD, that all trademark rights are also given up, and free for the taking by any person/entity who wishes to take them. russavia (talk) 15:13, 27 September 2013 (UTC)

I don't know why you think that I am incapable of having my own opinion and why I would act as a yes man for an organisation I'm not affiliated with. I also contest the notion that I lack an understanding between copyright and trademarks. You comment rather is a false dichotomy. The reasoning behind the comment is my understanding of releasing something into the public domain. As far as I am concerned this indicates the intent to give up control over your work. --Dschwen (talk) 15:59, 27 September 2013 (UTC)
As from my experience with the Wikivoyage Logo contest, even something that was formerly released into the Public Domain can be registered as a trademark. C.f. this diff: "you submitted your design in the previous Wikivoyage logo process (Round 1; Round 2) and released your design to the public domain at that time, " -- Rillke(q?) 18:31, 27 September 2013 (UTC)

QICbot[edit]

Hi Dschwen, the bot removed a large number of QI nomination that have not been reviewed. [9] You reverted the first instance, but then it did it again. -- KTC (talk) 08:56, 3 October 2013 (UTC)

Yes it does that if there has been no contribution to the nomination for 8 days. This is described on the COM:QIC page in the rules. --Dschwen (talk) 13:14, 3 October 2013 (UTC)

QICbot notifications[edit]

Hi mate. Can you stop QICbot tagging talk page edits as "minor"? Minor bot edits don't generate the big orange notification bar. -mattbuck (Talk) 16:03, 3 October 2013 (UTC)

Oh, right. Yeah.. that is probably related to my switch to the new pywikipedia version. I was getting python errors (multiple instances of named argument) when I specify minor=False). I'll have to figure out how to set it appropriately. --Dschwen (talk) 20:37, 3 October 2013 (UTC)
The same goes for VICbot. -- KTC (talk) 23:21, 3 October 2013 (UTC)

Planck image[edit]

Please explain to me this and how it does not qualify as a copyright violation. ESA images, aside from *very* specific circumstances (Hubble and European Southern Observatory images are the only ones I'm immediately aware of) are non-free. They do not release images from copyright as NASA does. Huntster (t @ c) 00:24, 9 October 2013 (UTC)

Then it will surely be deleted in the regular DR. The image has been on commons for four months so one more week won't make a difference. The image has been in use in several articles. --Dschwen (talk) 03:22, 9 October 2013 (UTC)
I'm not complaining about the change to DR, just asking what the rationale was for denying the speedy when it is an obvious copyright violation. Please don't assume bad faith. Huntster (t @ c) 09:02, 9 October 2013 (UTC)
Why do you assume I assume bad faith? --Dschwen (talk) 14:34, 9 October 2013 (UTC)
You're right, it was an unwarranted assumption, based on an overly brusque attitude and complete failure to answer a simple question. Since I still haven't got one, I'm disengaging. Huntster (t @ c) 21:44, 9 October 2013 (UTC)
Which is probably your best decision so far in this thread. If you call my attitude overly brusque you really need to reread what you posted here. --Dschwen (talk) 14:08, 10 October 2013 (UTC)

I ended up deleting that image now. And I have sent ESA a request to make this image available under a compatible CC license. But I'm not holding my breath. --Dschwen (talk) 15:34, 10 October 2013 (UTC)

--A.Savin 17:37, 13 October 2013 (UTC)

File:Grand Canyon near Hopi Point 2013.jpg / Commons:Quality_images_candidates/Archives_October_11_2013 dann selbst verleihen. Was schlägst du vor? Oder nochmal nominieren? --Tuxyso (talk) 21:09, 14 October 2013 (UTC)
--Dschwen (talk) 21:12, 14 October 2013 (UTC)

QICBot stall[edit]

FYI, Qicbot appears to have stalled after removing images from the page. -mattbuck (Talk) 13:48, 12 October 2013 (UTC)

Bot issues[edit]

Hi, JKadavoor Jee mentioned on my talk page that your bots have some problems. I am running the FPCBot and lately it has had problems modifying large pages. Is this something you see too, and in that case do you have any idea what can be done ? /Daniel78 (talk) 07:53, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

Uhm, yes, we have already talked about that :-). I commented on FPC talk. I switched to the latest pywikibot 'core' version. That helped a lot. I still have massive problems though and cannot let the QICbot run unsupervised. It does work at night (USA night, when most of Europe is still sleeping as well) when the global activity is low (midday over the pacific ocean :-) ). --Dschwen (talk) 18:21, 15 October 2013 (UTC)
Heh, sorry forgot who I had been talking to :) /Daniel78 (talk) 20:25, 16 October 2013 (UTC)
See this; the bot added the notification two times. :) JKadavoor Jee 02:29, 16 October 2013 (UTC)
Yes, I think it's failing to clear its cache of what has been promoted per user, though it is adding to it. -mattbuck (Talk) 06:34, 16 October 2013 (UTC)
That is quite possible. I actually had forgotten that I programmed this cache. So restoring the candidate page after a failed run while still having the cache caused the duplicate notification. --Dschwen (talk) 15:03, 16 October 2013 (UTC)

N-body Problem[edit]

Page has been deleted except for two sketches, which I will leave "speedy" unmarked; everything else should be deleted. Thank you for pointing this out.Rudrene (talk) 21:19, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

Frank Schulenburg (talk) 03:17, 16 October 2013 (UTC)
Danke Frank. --Dschwen (talk) 22:43, 16 October 2013 (UTC)

Nominating a picture for deletion.[edit]

Hey! I logged into Wikimedia/Wikipedia for the first time in almost a month, and I noticed that you nominated File:FLSTUDIO11.PNG ‎ for deletion, saying "Tagged as speedy by IP. Probably correct, but I'd like some further input if the GUI elements are really above the threshold.". What does this exactly mean? --Cam493 (talk) 16:11, 16 October 2013 (EST)

Hello Cam493! Somebody tagged your image to be immediately deleted (without a review by multiple people). This is a process that can be initiated if a file is a clear violation of our terms (not a freely licensed file). Instead of deleting the file I bumped it to a more thorough review process. I'm not 100% sure that the file should be deleted. But it is very likely that the displayed user interface elements are copyrightable and not released under a free license. --Dschwen (talk) 22:40, 16 October 2013 (UTC)

Speedy deletion request[edit]

Greetings, Dschwen! You denied my request for a speedy deletion of File:ILjunction-nahalrevida2.png. No problem. I made a standard deletion request, Commons:Deletion requests/File:ILjunction-nahalrevida2.png. Please explain to me why the file did not qualify for speedy deletion seeing as: "I uploaded it", "It is not used on any Wikis", "The upload history were my own tinkerings to get it right", "There is an almost exact duplicate, File:ILjunction-nahalrevida-prelim-HE.PNG, which replaces it". Seems like a case for speedy deletion as general maintenance. How am I mistaken? Kind regards, --@Efrat (talk) 06:53, 17 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi @Efrat. I denied this rather than convert it to a {{duplicate}} (which is the template that should have been used, as it makes things easier for the admins). I really don't have a strong reason for this. I guess I worked on a few too many speedies that day :-). Sorry! --Dschwen (talk) 13:29, 17 October 2013 (UTC)

Toolserver[edit]

Hi, do you have a clue why this page still shows a verson of the file with unblurred license plate? We received a complaint about it, OTRS ticket number 2013092610019258. Jcb (talk) 08:24, 18 October 2013 (UTC)

Fixed. Looks like the zoomviewer cache did not get updated. --Dschwen (talk) 13:15, 18 October 2013 (UTC)

Hello Intermedichbo, I have already undeleted and untagged all images that do have a OTRS template on the file pages. --Dschwen (talk) 19:34, 21 October 2013 (UTC)
P.S.: let me know if any other images got deleted and need to be restored. --Dschwen (talk) 19:35, 21 October 2013 (UTC)

What exactly do I have to do to prevent this file being deleted as a duplicate?[edit]

File:Seattle - Fiestas Patrias Parade 2008 - Wicked Witch 01.jpg: I don't want to get into some sort of edit war with other admins over my own photo, but File:Seattle - Fiestas Patrias Parade 2008 - Wicked Witch 01.jpg was not an exact duplicate of File:Seattle - Fiestas Patrias Parade 2008 - Wicked Witch 02.jpg, as can easily be seen if you look at both images (quite a difference in colors). Túrelio deleted it. I restored it with a comment stating it was not a duplicate. Now you've deleted it and turned the page into a redirect.

Is there something I'm missing here? Given that it is not an exact duplicate, I'm pretty sure it is supposed to at least go through a deletion discussion if someone thinks it is not worth keeping. - Jmabel ! talk 00:07, 22 October 2013 (UTC)

Sorry Jmabel, I did not know about the history of the file, otherwise I would not have deleted it. I do process quite a lot of duplicates and try to make a case-by-case decision. A lot of files are not exact duplicates, some are cropped minimally, some have slight modifications that retain the general character of the image and improve the picture. I processed your image as a dupe because IMO the edit is an improvement. But I absolutely do not want this to stand if it is controversial to any involved party. I'll undelete. Then we can think about protecting the image if necessary. --Dschwen (talk) 01:53, 22 October 2013 (UTC)
I get that it's not an exact duplicate, but it seems clearly inferior to the darker version. Is there a reason not to put it up for DR now? --99of9 (talk) 02:35, 22 October 2013 (UTC)
So one is a good witch photo and one is a bad witch photo? But which witch is which? ;-) Jonathunder (talk) 16:06, 22 October 2013 (UTC)
Now you are being wicked! --Dschwen (talk) 16:32, 22 October 2013 (UTC)
See this and this. The modifications are less than visible; we have so many pictures like this as we can't edit existing assessed pictures or a picture while in a nomination if at EN:FP. May be a bit off topic as the current example (of Jmabel) are not assessed pictures. JKadavoor Jee 03:17, 22 October 2013 (UTC)
Typically now in a case like this I would first upload the original version, then the improved one. However, I hadn't yet adopted that policy at the time I uploaded these. I agree that in this case File:Seattle - Fiestas Patrias Parade 2008 - Wicked Witch 02.jpg is an improvement. However, because I didn't do the two-version same-name approach here, if we delete File:Seattle - Fiestas Patrias Parade 2008 - Wicked Witch 01.jpg, we lose original, and also if someone wants to post-process differently, they have no way to get at the least processed version as a starting point. That's why in cases like this I'm inclined to leave both out there. (That said, I'm currently uploading a bunch of aerial photos I had on Flickr, and in each case I'm bringing over both my original photo and the post-processed one, for similar reasons; because of how Flickr2Commons works, they end up at two different names, and I'm using {{other version}} to connect them.) - Jmabel ! talk 00:15, 23 October 2013 (UTC)
Forgetting to upload the original version initially is not a big issue. You can do it any time and revert back to the preferred version. But, it is only up to you whether or not to keep them as separate files. (See the third version in the file history; I uploaded it on request by a reviewer). JKadavoor Jee 02:40, 23 October 2013 (UTC)
I agree, and would have no problem with someone else who wanted to go back and get the originals into the history this way, but outright deletion of the original is counterproductive, and I'm certainly not going to go back to several thousand files that were uploaded in multiple versions under distinct names and do this myself. I'd be very open to an automated or semi-automated way to accomplish this without having to download/upload, but I don't have a super-fast Internet connection, so downloading the original back to my computer, re-uploading the original as a new version, then updating that with the "proper" version would be an investment of several minutes per photo. - Jmabel ! talk 03:57, 23 October 2013 (UTC)
Yes; I too prefer to keep the existing files as they are. JKadavoor Jee 04:42, 23 October 2013 (UTC)

Recent duplicate processing[edit]

Hi Dschwen. Thanks for your work on the duplicates I've been tagging. I noticed today that it seems like you're deleting the high-resolution versions. The images that are uploaded by US National Archives bot and have the standard naming structure with the original archival title and identifier are the original scans that all the other images, often taken from NARA's catalog or Flickr account at low-resolution and with incomplete metadata, derive from. That's why I've been doing this tagging, to make sure that those legacy versions are getting replaced by the higher-resolution institutional uploads. I'm confused by how you deciding to fix these duplicates; was it a mistake? Dominic (talk) 21:19, 22 October 2013 (UTC)

I deleted the the lower resolution images and at same resolution I deleted the smaller JPG files. Did I mix up files somewhere? I also had to do a fair bit of image page merging. A lot of the images you selected to keep had missing categories etc. --Dschwen (talk) 21:21, 22 October 2013 (UTC)
The last 10 or so in my watchlist, starting with 1973 StateStBlock Boston.jpg, seem to have the wrong file deleted. The one with "NARA" and an ID in the title should always be the one that remains, not the (usually) older file from manual uploads. Dominic (talk) 21:26, 22 October 2013 (UTC)
For that file I see
  • 3,000 × 2,009 (755,903 bytes) for the deleted version
  • 3,000 × 2,009 (891 KB) for the retained version
I don't understand why you think the version I deleted is the high resolution version. --Dschwen (talk) 21:30, 22 October 2013 (UTC)
I guess you're right that apparently some of these older files are larger in file size; I don't know why that is. I am trying to standardize all of these NARA images and retain the versions with the correct titles, metadata, and templates. I would rather not have 100,000 files using one naming scheme and common template, and then 10 which do not just because somehow the file that was uploaded with the same resolution had a slightly larger file size. That's why I am asking if you can make sure that the US National Archives bot files which were literally uploaded from inside the US National Archives using the master scan file (and cannot be inferior) are not the ones getting deleted. Dominic (talk) 21:40, 22 October 2013 (UTC)
Ok. If you provide me with a list or wrongly deleted versions I'll undelete them. --Dschwen (talk) 22:01, 22 October 2013 (UTC)
Here are the ones I noticed. In each of these, the one on the left, the duplicate, was retained, rather than the NARA original versions on the right. Dominic (talk) 19:18, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

What is your problem? They are the exact same thing except for a tiny irrelevant shade of brown, and in case you didn't notice the dupe file is my original upload in the first place and it's no longer necessary. Thank you[edit]

Bonjour/Bonsoir, Dschwen.

I just want to congratulate and thank you for the wonderful job you are doing in QIC pages. Nobody but you is able to do what you do, and I'm very admirative for that, and even of your kindness. Thank you.--Jebulon (talk) 19:55, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

Thanks, man! I'm not going to lie, it is really nice to hear that from time to time ;-). Work on QIC has been both frustrating (due to the bad server response on the large pages), as well as fun (rewriting the QIHelper, trying to make the bot more fault tolerant) lately. We really need to move forward with day-by-day subpages on the candidate page and finer grained category galleries. --Dschwen (talk) 20:02, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

deleted photos due to the copy-right "violation"[edit]

Hello, some of the photos I have uploaded were deleted due to the copy-right violation. But I did add the link of the pages of panoramio where those photos are tagged as " free to use "; the owner of the photosis called "starliner" and his/her photos are free to use. Again this is the link; http://www.panoramio.com/photo/86958324 ,on the photo details section if you click the copy right details you can see that; his/her photos are really good and usefull for me. So can I learn the reason why the photos are deleted ?

Looks like an honest mistake then. I'll look into it and restore the images. Give me some time. --Dschwen (talk) 21:41, 25 October 2013 (UTC)
Oh, no mistake. The images are not free to use they have a restriction on them: Attribution-No Derivative Works. Unfortunately this is not permissible on commons. --Dschwen (talk) 21:42, 25 October 2013 (UTC)

Noomi Rapace[edit]

I'm not sure if the image that was uploaded had the same "watermark" as the image you deleted, but as far as i know, images from "Bollywood Hungama" are allowed for use on wikipedia (http://www.bollywoodhungama.com/more/photos/view/stills/parties/id/1445566) i.e if this was the image you deleted, then its probably allowed and if not, you might want to consider deleting a few more here..--Stemoc (talk) 22:34, 28 October 2013 (UTC)

Undeleted to let you check it out. The speedy reason stated: Looks like BH doesnt own original snap. --Dschwen (talk) 22:46, 28 October 2013 (UTC)
The High resolution image which Dharmadhyaksha linked has a water mark. I understand what he is saying or implying that if that blog has a higher resolution of the image which BH claims to own, then they probably do not own the rights to it. PluzMedia seems to own a even higher resolution of the image. The blog got their image from here and the link below tells us that "movietalkies.com" owns the rights (or so it seems). Exif data i found from this image tells me its owned by "Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation" which doesn't release any of its images under CC. You can delete the image again, I think an OTRS requests needs to be sent to BH and also all images uploaded to wikimedia from BH which doesn't involved "indian stars" needs to be discussed or deleted.--Stemoc (talk) 23:30, 28 October 2013 (UTC)
On numerous occasions now, i and others, have observed that BH's snaps taken outside India or outside predominantly Indian events are all copyvios. Few examples are listed at Template_talk:Cc-by-3.0-BollywoodHungama#Link_collection. User:SpacemanSpiff has also clubbed suspected images at Category:Files from Bollywood Hungama that require further source verification. You all are welcome to help check these and also others. Also note that some Indian star's pics taken in India have also been found suspects and hence deleted. §§Dharmadhyaksha§§ {T/C} 18:04, 29 October 2013 (UTC)
The problem with BH is that earlier on the Parties and Events categories was stuffed with images from their photographers only. Over the past couple of years they've started relicensing work from others and filling this category. This new problem applies primarily to events outside India (they still are the main agency for such events within India) but can also apply to images from movie sets where producers sometimes invite agencies or sometimes provide them with images so it's hard for us to know which is which and therefore Prec Principle would apply to all images from sets. A few other oddball cases include BH reusing government images or images from the subject itself and these aren't too difficult to catch. If you see the category I created you'll note the different types of images there, I also brought this up on Village Pump a couple of weeks ago when someone started a discussion on Getty images (some of the BH images are from Getty -- now deleted through DR). I think Category:Files from Bollywood Hungama that require further source verification can be deleted without DR, it's just wasting too much of our time to find and tag original sources. To prevent future instances, I've modified the license review template so that such images will not be passed at all and therefore the issue shouldn't recur. —SpacemanSpiff 03:41, 30 October 2013 (UTC)

QI/Subject/Architecture[edit]

Hello Dschwen,
the galleries in our list are all created and the sections in public buildings and religious are removed/changed, so that only sections with their one page (Churches & Bridges) remain below the main gallery with an overview gallery and a link to the subpage remains. I'm not sure how much I can help with the next step(s), as I don't have access to the MediaWiki:QIhelper.js and while I can create the sample pages, I have no idea how they are filled (only a vague notion... ;->). Until you tell me if I can help some more I will therefore start/continue to sort the old QIs in man made structures... Anna reg (talk) 15:02, 29 October 2013 (UTC)

Hallo Anna!

  • hast du bei /architecture extra These images of objects have... stehen gelassen?

Ganz liebe Grüße, Anna reg (talk) 23:23, 30 October 2013 (UTC)

Her Helper markiert nur. Mach einfach erstmal so weiter :-). --Dschwen (talk) 16:26, 3 November 2013 (UTC)
Ok, passt.

Liebe Grüße, Anna reg (talk) 19:41, 6 November 2013 (UTC)

Anna reg (talk) 22:42, 12 November 2013 (UTC)

Your actions[edit]

Hello. You deleted File:AnnaBogomazova.jpg and File:Anna Bogomazova !.jpg, but I think thats not right. Cos user who upload this files is en:Anna Bogomazova (girl on this photos), and actually she is author of this photos. --Wikifido (talk) 19:25, 29 October 2013 (UTC)

The author is the photographer of the pictures. With him lies the copyright. If Anna can have him send a permission letter to the OTRS queue I'll gladly undelete the photos. --Dschwen (talk) 20:07, 29 October 2013 (UTC)

Problems with Copyright of an image[edit]

Dear Dschwen,

I am facing a small problem.

I am trying to upload an image, that I own, on wikimedia commons. This image is the picture of a candidate for a local election. I am the manager of the web campaign of this candidate, webmaster of the website it has been taken to, and have the written approbation of the Author of the picture AND the candidate.

However, our political opponents are more fluent than I am in the use of wikipedia, and are requesting (with success) deletion of the picture because I do not own the copyright.

I tried to upload it again, and you put it down without letting me explain that the request was wrong and that I own the rights.

What am I supposed to do to stop it from being deleted?

The file in question is https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/File:Francois-Xavier-De-Peretti.jpg

Sincerely yours, --Padischtroumpf (talk) 09:53, 1 November 2013 (UTC)

Hello Padischtroumpf, I have undeleted the picture and tagged it with no permission now. A message has been placed on you talk page with instructions on how to proceed. Let me know if you need any further help. --Dschwen (talk) 13:26, 1 November 2013 (UTC)

"Happy Diwali!"[edit]

While Diwali is popularly known as the "festival of lights", the most significant spiritual meaning behind it is "the awareness of the inner light". It is the belief that there is something beyond the physical body and mind which is pure, infinite, and eternal, called the Atman. The celebration of Diwali as the "victory of good over evil” refers to the light of higher knowledge dispelling all ignorance, the ignorance that masks one's true nature, not as the body, but as the unchanging, infinite, immanent and transcendent reality. With this awakening come compassion and the awareness of the oneness of all things (higher knowledge). This brings Satcitananda (joy or peace). Just as we celebrate the birth of our physical being, Diwali is the celebration of this Inner Light. While the story behind Diwali and the manner of celebration varies from region to, the essence is the same – to rejoice in the Inner Light! And this year Diwali and All Souls' Day come together to fully defeat the Evil! "Happy Diwali!"JKadavoor Jee 06:00, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

Bot in VI[edit]

Hello Daniel,

The Bot VI seems disconnected. Thank you to you could do.--Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 06:21, 6 November 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the note, I don't know why the crontab on the toolserver was not executed anymore :-( ran manually now. --Dschwen (talk) 06:29, 6 November 2013 (UTC)
Bot has taken pictures of the list without promotion. Should it be back in the list, until everything works again? --Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 08:23, 7 November 2013 (UTC)
Yes, let's do that. Sorry about that. --Dschwen (talk) 14:12, 7 November 2013 (UTC)

nsfw acceptance test[edit]

Hello Daniel,
Once opted-in by clicking on the icon, I didn't manage to opt-out, even after logging out, closing the browser (tested with Firefox and IE). Note that I had added an image tagged with the new nsfw template in caption in the gallery before. Even unlogged, the tagged images are no more hidden in the page. That can be an issue, if the same computer is used by different persons (in a family for example). --Myrabella (talk) 14:04, 6 November 2013 (UTC)

It works for me in IE, FF and Chrome. When I refresh the page; all pictures are hidden again. Are you talking about the example given? JKadavoor Jee 14:16, 6 November 2013 (UTC)
Hi Myrabella, there seems to be a slight misunderstanding. You would opt-in by activating a gadget in your preferences. For demonstration purposes you need to navigate to the sample page using the URL I provides (with the withJS= parameter). This will simulate having the gadget activated. --Dschwen (talk) 14:35, 6 November 2013 (UTC)
Yes, I am talking of that example. Refresh didn't work for me, but I have understood why: when one refreshes the page by using the "Purge" tab (Page Purge gadget activated in preferences), that erases the "?withJS=MediaWiki:Gadget-DeferredDisplay.js" string in the adress of the test page. --Myrabella (talk) 14:46, 6 November 2013 (UTC)
@Dschwen: a further question: when implemented with a gadget to activate, will a quick refresh action by F5 or the Purge tag be possible? --Myrabella (talk) 14:59, 6 November 2013 (UTC)
As implemented currently the tagged images will always be hidden on page load and will have to be revealed through klick. I do not anticipate many images to be tagged ever, so implementing a smarter UI that stores the hiding state seems like overkill right now. The wikimedia servers never know whether you unhid an imahe, this all happens locally in your browser. --Dschwen (talk) 15:02, 6 November 2013 (UTC)
OK, that seems fine and efficient to me. Thank you very much for that solution. --Myrabella (talk) 15:11, 6 November 2013 (UTC)
Does it reveal all the tagged images on the FPC list, or just the one you are clicking? -- Colin (talk) 15:30, 6 November 2013 (UTC)
Just the one you are clicking. So you can make a per-image decision what to click based on the caption. --Dschwen (talk) 16:26, 6 November 2013 (UTC)
@Dschwen: a further question -> I saw how the gadget will work for images displayed in simple galleries, but I have a further question: how the tag will be added (if necessary) on images submitted in FPC (or QIC or VIC or any page made with templates)? The first stage you describe is "Images are tagged with a marker in the thumbnail captions". --Myrabella (talk) 17:34, 6 November 2013 (UTC)
Excellent question, and I have preempted it with a change to the gadget an hour ago. Recheck the example page (and clear your cache beforehand). --Dschwen (talk) 18:08, 6 November 2013 (UTC)
Thank you, Daniel, for the foreseen answer :) Correct me if I am not right. To tag a FPC if necessary, one could add the {{nsfw}} template let's say just before or after the line "created, uploaded and nominated by...". For a QIC, it would be possible to add in the the {{nsfw}} template in the |{{/Nomination| line. But for a VIC, in which parameter shoud the {{nsfw}} template be added? --Myrabella (talk) 07:12, 7 November 2013 (UTC)
No, it should be tagges like on the example page. --Dschwen (talk) 14:11, 7 November 2013 (UTC)
Hmm, I missed something then... I asked the question because files are not listed in the FPC page, for example, in the simple form [[File:name.jpg|xxxpx|caption]] but in a more complex manner. Well, it doesn't matter, we will see in practice, if needed (I don't think I will be the one tagging images anyway :) --Myrabella (talk) 17:12, 7 November 2013 (UTC)
On the nomination subpages they are listed in that simple manner. Where it says caption in your example you'd put the template. --Dschwen (talk) 17:33, 7 November 2013 (UTC)
Slowly but surely :) Oh yes, there is a field <div class="wpImageAnnotatorFile">[[File:name.jpg|x x y px|caption]]</div> in FPC nomination pages. For other labels: I guess it may work for QICs, as the QIC page is a gallery (with a special caption field though). For VICs, I can't see how it would work. I am well aware that the question was raised in the FPC forum and so the solution will answer well that question for FPCs. My additional information requests are for my general understanding—thank you. --Myrabella (talk) 09:05, 8 November 2013 (UTC)

If you would like to debug your gadget, you can add the debug=true-parameter to the current url. Then simply filter the scripts by your gadget's name, however note it is delivered from the cookie-free domain bits.wikimedia.org (not commons.wikimedia.org). If there are remaining questions like how to implement persistent user configuration to be saved into the Commons account, drop me a line. -- Rillke(q?) 22:20, 9 November 2013 (UTC)

Haha, tja, danke sehr, freue mich auch schon drauf... ...nicht! --Dschwen (talk) 01:19, 10 November 2013 (UTC)
Wer weiß, wer Du morgen bist, Daniel?
Da wird i.Ü. fleißig diskutiert. -- Rillke(q?) 20:50, 10 November 2013 (UTC)

GopiChand Lagadapati with Martin Sheen[edit]

Hello Dschwen, hope you are good. With regard to deletion discussion .Even before uploading pics I have asked for a permission for public use from Gopichand Lagadapati who has worked with Mr.Sheen on Bhopal: Prayer For Rain. I have his consent to use it for public use. Can forward his mail or share a copy of his written consent. Will produce it when ever required. The procedures are little complicated for me to understand so send me links on how to submit the copies of permission. Can mail a copy which is far easy for me otherwise. user:astrangers heart 21:14, 11/123/2013

This is with regard to the wiki media images used in the article Gopichand Lagadapati . Have forwarded the mail of Mr.Gopichand Lagadapati to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org giving his permission to use the photographs under free licence category. Am waiting for the reply and instructions from wiki so i ask you to kindly be patient before you take any further action. Thanks,Rock (talk) 16:28, 26 November 2013 (UTC)

Quality images/Recently promoted[edit]

Hello Dschwen, I want to help for categorization but when I make a modification all the images that I did no affect are tagged with {{QICbotMove|-select-}}, what can I do? --Christian Ferrer (talk) 08:31, 24 November 2013 (UTC)

Hi Christian! What browser are you using and what kind of internet connection do you have? You are the only one who keeps editing with a totally outdated version of the script (check the history). You need to find a way to clear your cache (or may be your internet provider caches too aggressively). It is absolutely insane that your browser keeps using a page version that has been changed weeks ago. Let's get you to the latest version, then we can see if the bug persists. --Dschwen (talk) 15:15, 24 November 2013 (UTC)
I cleared my cache and I managed to use QIhelperNew.js but with exactly the result. I use Internet explorer 11 with an access ADSL 2+. I found a solution by using firefox and it works, it is thus a problem with Internet explorer 11. It is not any more necessary to worry you, from now on I am going to use firefox for the categorization. See you soon. --Christian Ferrer (talk) 17:44, 24 November 2013 (UTC)
Hm, of course switching to Firefox is a good move (for better support of new HTML5 technologies), but i should work with IE as well. I'm using jquery for maximum browser compatibility. I'll try and find an IE to fix this bug. --Dschwen (talk) 18:52, 24 November 2013 (UTC)

Commons:Photo challenge[edit]

The Village Pump discussion was positive, though not huge in its response. I suspect we'll have to set something up and run with it to see if it takes off. Would you be able to help? I don't know if admin abilities are required here, and later some scripting skills. As a first step we could create Commons:Photo challenge and start discussion on the first themes/challenges. It would be good to run something over December and during that time we can figure out how to review the submissions and arrange subsequent challenges. Once running, we could also have a site banner to advertise it. What do you think? Are you able to devote some time to this? -- Colin (talk) 17:19, 24 November 2013 (UTC)

Created a start. Colin (talk) 13:16, 25 November 2013 (UTC)
Nice, but I would present the current challenge of the week/month big as the first thing on the page. --Dschwen (talk) 14:49, 25 November 2013 (UTC)
Good idea. The FPC page has way too much in the way before you get down to business. Please comment over on the project talk page. I'm not really sure how we will host each challenge. Probably a page per challenge. But then are there pages inside for each submission, or do we use categories to list them? Lots of questions at this stage, and I could do with someone familiar with the site to help. Colin (talk) 15:21, 25 November 2013 (UTC)

Commons:Deletion requests/File:Thixa caobang.jpg[edit]

Please explain this and what you mean by 'regular time' -FASTILY 07:32, 25 November 2013 (UTC)

Sure, you closed this DR after just 2 days rather than giving it 7 days (the time a non-obvious DR should run before being closed). I consider this non-obvious, as I converted it from a speedy to a regular DR. --Dschwen (talk) 14:24, 25 November 2013 (UTC)
Right, because October 21, 2013 was totally two days ago; I've undone your obviously inappropriate re-open. Since you're clearly not familiar with the rules, I'll take the liberty of clarifying them to you: please do not unilaterally undo another admin's actions without a) properly doing your research, and/or b) consulting with the deleting admin first. -FASTILY 23:34, 25 November 2013 (UTC)
Whoops, sorry, I overlooked the difference of one additional month. No need for chastising me Fastilly. This was clearly a stupid mistake my undercaffeinated self made. I was being neither aggressive nor whiny and I expect the same courtesy on my talk page. That includes no hyperbole such as you're clearly not familiar with the rules. --Dschwen (talk) 23:39, 25 November 2013 (UTC)
Then my apologies to you as well. I interpreted your initial reply as one of bad faith. Since that's obviously not the case, I'll respectfully retract my previous comments -FASTILY 00:04, 26 November 2013 (UTC)

I'd like to understand, why this file has been deleted anyway... Thank You.

Hi, thanks for the message. I have restored the file. It was indeed tagged with an OTRS template (which indicates the receipt of a permission). However the person who added the OTRS template forgot to remove the speedy deletion request. And I overlooked the OTRS box. I already caught about 5 other cases where the deletion box was not removed despite an OTRS notice being added. I must have missed this one though. --Dschwen (talk) 23:55, 25 November 2013 (UTC)

Was sagst Du dazu? Grüße --Wladyslaw (talk) 20:19, 27 November 2013 (UTC)

Hallo.

--Wladyslaw (talk) 05:40, 2 December 2013 (UTC)

Weil kein File: vorne dran steht.

--Dschwen (talk) 21:23, 15 December 2013 (UTC)

Actions taken with files from COM:UR[edit]

Hi Dschwen,

Why you deleted files:

Your action completly doens't make sense to me. These files were restored especialy for Deletion Request. Deleting them in these cases, completly breaks the sense of COM:UR. Please watch out for it in the future and restore these files, they're waiting for judgement.

Thank you for understanding. --Rezonansowy (talk) 14:15, 28 November 2013 (UTC)

Hi Rezonansowy, if you look at the timeline of edits and deletions this becomes more clear. I had opened a bunch of files that were tagged as speedy and processed their deletions (this was just after Fastily restored the files). After I had opened the tabs Fastilly removed the speedy delete templates (there is a 2 minute gap between undeletion and template removal). This was an unlucky coincidence. --Dschwen (talk) 17:47, 28 November 2013 (UTC)
Hi, thank you for quick response. Know I see everything, thanks for the explanation (and sorry). But can we do something to prevent such things? Some rule or process? --Rezonansowy (talk) 21:53, 28 November 2013 (UTC)
We already do have a lot of rules, and I think I know quite a few of them (with more rules it will just get harder to know them all). So I don't think more rules will help. Mistakes will happen, regardless of whether people know the rules or not. What we can do and what we did, was to talk to each other and try to fix the mistakes. Also please note that I perform way over one thousand deletions every month, so a few mistakes can be expected. I'll do my best to be responsive about fixing them. --Dschwen (talk) 01:17, 29 November 2013 (UTC)

Nasa-Foto[edit]

Wikipedia? --Satnav (talk) 08:05, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

--Dschwen (talk) 15:56, 3 December 2013 (UTC)
Besten Dank. --Satnav (talk) 16:51, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

About my usurp request[edit]

Hello, Dschwen.

Could you check my usurp request, please? I provided the diff link as you said.

In addition, I've been waiting for a reply for a week.

Greetings from Colombia and God bless you. --Continentalis (talk) 14:11, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

Done. Cheers! --Dschwen (talk) 14:58, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

QIC discussions[edit]

I was wondering, will QICbot still work as normal if we change the level 2 Consensual Review header to say Discussions instead? It doesn't make too much sense to me to have two different level headers with the same name. -mattbuck (Talk) 10:32, 7 December 2013 (UTC)

Sigs on Photo Challenge[edit]

See my latest post on the talk page. I'm wondering if we might be better of without signatures at all. Less bias. Just judge the image (with title). What do you think? (Nice Christmas lights, btw).

Colin 16:38, 11 December 2013 (UTC)

Sure, I just had to revert the change anyways as it basically broke custom signatures for everyone everywhere. --Dschwen 16:41, 11 December 2013 (UTC)

Unsicheres Laden beim Interaktiven Bildbetrachter[edit]

--Dschwen (talk) 14:52, 13 December 2013 (UTC)

File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-ar.png[edit]

Hi. after updating File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-ar.png, the file still shows the original logo. is there anything you can do about this? Thanks. --Ciphers (talk) 22:15, 16 December 2013 (UTC)

No it does not. You will have to purge your cache. Both the file page as well as the ar.wp site show the updated logo. --Dschwen (talk) 22:25, 16 December 2013 (UTC)
Right! Thanks a lot. --Ciphers (talk) 18:09, 17 December 2013 (UTC)

Module:Coordinates[edit]

See also: Commons talk:Geocoding/Archive 3#Coordinate duplication

Daniel, I was playing for a while with Module:Coordinates which I hope might become a single place controlling all core functionality of {{Location}} template family, {{Inline coordinates}} and other geo-location templates. I would especially like to create a single place where that communicates with GeoHack and adjusts classes/types passed through attribution string. I would also like this module to handle all communication with other tools and map websites and to handle all <span> tags and microformating. We seem to have large number of mostly unreadable templates handling it now and I think this would be a more sane approach to maintain it. I would like to also use this occasion to revisit attributes passed to GeoHack, for example should {{Inline coordinates}} use any or would be possible to restore the link from {{Institution}} template to GeoHack for files (disabled by User:Dispenser). Let me know what you think. --Jarekt (talk) 16:34, 17 December 2013 (UTC)

The link to geohack from Institution was disabled because it flooded the external_links database table with useless coordinates. It should not be readded without talking to him. One solution would be to add an attribute for institution coordinates so that dispenser could drop them from the extraction. --Dschwen (talk) 17:29, 17 December 2013 (UTC)
The fact {{Institution}} is hidden by default gives an indication how useful the template and links are (two clicks to GeoHack). Its effectively Search Engine Optimization (SEO). I'm surprised we haven't added share buttons yet.
The other consideration was the data structure: Misleading if somebody assumed hyper-localized museum room mapping — like Google Map's museum views. Issue with graves on enwiki where "general" location is a 20 minute walk away. And why not extend this to User pages? —Dispenser (talk) 04:07, 22 December 2013 (UTC)

DR Log for December 7[edit]

You've got to be the fastest guy in the West -- I don't think thirty seconds elapsed between my closing Commons:Deletion requests/File:Flag of the Western Australia Fire and Rescue Service.svg and you're having moved it to the archive and deleted the empty log. .     Jim . . . . Thank you[edit]

Thank you for this. No, really. Writing isn't something that comes very easily to me. I'd put up a call to arms that was frankly pretty insipid and not very good. Your "rather niche" comment gave me something to kick against, which was just what I needed to write something passionate and committed, which (i) on a purely personal level feels so good to have been able to set down in words, and (ii) I hope comes over as 10x more effective than what was there before. (Even if my ability to be coherent, or even to type straight, was falling off a cliff by 6 a.m.) So, quite seriously, thank you very much for spurring me to write this. Jheald (talk) 12:56, 23 December 2013 (UTC)

Jheald.I must say I was surprised last night when I saw that wall of text as a reply. But I'm glad I read it. You've made your point clear. And I agree with it. --Dschwen (talk) 00:03, 24 December 2013 (UTC)

-- Gerd Fahrenhorst (talk) 11:32, 30 December 2013 (UTC)

Copyright tag removal[edit]

I assume the part of this edit that removed the copyright tag was a mistake, for the image I found in Category:Media without a license: needs history check today. Please be more careful when editing such image details because it could well have been deleted for lack of a licence except that I reviewed the history, found the problem and fixed it. If you intentionally removed the licence then please tag it for deletion as missing a licence. You may want to review it. Ww2censor (talk) 11:39, 5 January 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for fixing this. I will try to be"more careful". however please look at total failure rates before issuing such recommendations (I.e how many duplicates were processed and how many mistakes were made).--Dschwen (talk) 14:14, 5 January 2014 (UTC)
I was just letting you know out of courtesy and it has nothing to do with duplicates, just edits that were not checked well enough before saving. The "Preview" button is a useful tool and sometimes we save too quickly. Actually I have found quite a few such errors, more than I expected and most from experienced editors, which surprised me. Though from a "total failure" view the number is very low but that is not an excuse. Good luck. Ww2censor (talk) 10:56, 10 January 2014 (UTC)
Uhm, yeah, the preview button is useful. However there is no preview in the duplicates processing tool, which I used... --Dschwen (talk) 14:21, 10 January 2014 (UTC)

FastCCI gadget / Slider[edit]

Hallo Dschwen!

--Dschwen (talk) 16:32, 9 January 2014 (UTC)

Hi Dschwen, I previously installed your gadget by editing my common.css and common.js. Now that it is available as a preference, I removed those changes and activated the gadget. I see the buttons on the category page but clicking them does nothing. What am I doing wrong? -- Colin (talk) 10:35, 10 January 2014 (UTC)

Same problem / Ich habe das gleiche Problem.
--Dschwen (talk) 15:32, 11 January 2014 (UTC)
Hello, The gadget doesn't work for me when using the Modern skin (with Firefox 26.0). As Colin, I see the buttons on the category page but clicking them does nothing. --Myrabella (talk) 13:04, 11 January 2014 (UTC)
@Myrabella: I will do some testing with Modern, it probalby is the #bodyContent id. --Dschwen (talk) 15:32, 11 January 2014 (UTC)
Ok, it works in Modern, Coogne Blue, MonoBook, and Vector now. However the buttons look crappy in all skins except Vector. But I'm working on that. --Dschwen (talk) 15:51, 11 January 2014 (UTC)
Looking better now (a vertical-align: middle was missing on the icons). --Dschwen (talk) 16:09, 11 January 2014 (UTC)
Hmm; now I'm getting "no results" in Chrome. See, File:14-33-29-ouv-schoenenbourg.jpg is an FP under Category:Interior of Ouvrage Schoenenbourg. Jee 16:48, 11 January 2014 (UTC)
Ok, that's bad. I've been testing on large categories like Category:Paris. I'll look into it. --Dschwen (talk) 17:00, 11 January 2014 (UTC)
Aha, ok, I made some changes recently and must have broken something on the server. The server has two different strategies to compute the intersection, depending on the sizes of the categories involved. The binary search method, which is used if one of the cats is very large seems to be working properly, but the sort strategy, for smaller categories, is broken. I'll take a look. --Dschwen (talk) 17:11, 11 January 2014 (UTC)

@Tuxyso, Jkadavoor: the no results bug is worked around by always using the bsearch strategy, until I fix the sort strategy. --Dschwen (talk) 17:18, 11 January 2014 (UTC)

I get now results, but the script hangs for larger result sets. Category:Images of USA by Tuxyso works for FPs, but hangs for QIs (slider is visible in both cases). The same with FF and Chrome. --Tuxyso (talk) 17:30, 11 January 2014 (UTC)
Hmm, odd, the backend delivers the search results ok, but then the script needs to perform an API request to get names and image sizes. That API request to the wikimedia servers is what is hanging. --Dschwen (talk) 17:49, 11 January 2014 (UTC)
My script went into a very long loop due to an incorrect category depth returned by the backend (I have added a quick workaround and will fix the bug in the server). --Dschwen (talk) 18:55, 11 January 2014 (UTC)
Works for me, now. Thanks. Jee 06:02, 12 January 2014 (UTC)

@Colin: Just tested it in a VM with IE8 and with my new request method it now works. Yay! --Dschwen (talk) 05:35, 12 January 2014 (UTC)

More to discuss[edit]

Hi Dschwen, thanks for the informative chat on IRC tonight and your comments on my Sandbox page, they're both really informative, but I'm left with possibly more questions than answers.

You stated "It has been practice to reinstate admins that chose to voluntarily retire (to my understanding)" which raises the issue of fairness and openness. This is something that is not discussed anywhere on the project, with the result that only a few administrators appear to be aware that they are able to retire and then ask for restoration of permission without an RfA. This is clearly something that all administrators should be made aware of, and it is certainly something that we should be telling administrators that are in danger of losing their permissions due to inactivity. Would you agree that this custom has been kept too quiet and is arguably unfair as it benefits only those who are aware of its existence ?

Secondly, at User:Nick/Sandbox2 you state that you need to be able to make a "rational decision" to promote a former administrator without RfA and go on to state "Knowing a user personally is neither a necessary nor a sufficient requirement, but knowing that both the departure process was clean and that the performance of the admin prior to departure was not on a decline is a requirement for me. Otherwise I am unable to assume responsibility for the restoration of the bit." so I was left troubled by how you were able to make a "rational decision" on the promotion of Michael Maggs without an RfA. He left 3.5 years prior to you granting him his permissions, please describe in detail the process you went through to ensure you were capable of making a rational decision please, and why you would be unable to do the same for me or for other former administrators.

This leaves me as confused as ever [20] a temporary retirement of a few months which morphed into almost four years of retirement, and a stated intent to ask the community whether he should undergo a new RfA, an intent which both you and Michael bypassed, per [21], as you returned his permission before anybody was able to post the diff (as above) and discuss a reconfirmation RfA.

I regretfully conclude we are back to the same charge as before, it is dependent on a bureaucrat knowing you personally and taking action on that basis. How would you feel about a voluntary reconfirmation RfB yourself ?

Thanks, Nick (talk) 02:16, 22 January 2014 (UTC)

Nick, if my memory is correct, the restoration of MichaelMaggs and Fastily are done by Dschwen on his initial days as a 'crat. So sticking on those actions is not very helpful. Jee 03:06, 22 January 2014 (UTC)
@Jkadavoor: these were decisions made relatively recently, citing an unwritten, informal tradition that few people know about, highlighting these concerns and asking for consistent sensible treatment is important here. You cannot have bureaucrats going around returning permissions in the case of people who have retired when bureaucrats aren't informing administrators that they can bypass a reconfirmation RfA if they voluntarily resign and temporarily retire. If the community makes sure this is added to policy or that all administrators are informed, I think you'll see the numbers of administrators being desysopped for inactivity dropping dramatically. Nick (talk) 12:23, 22 January 2014 (UTC)
Yes I agree that a lot of customs and policies are rather hard to find and a lot of people (me included) probably don't know about a lot of stuff. It would not hurt mentioning this in the inactivity notification admins get. Regarding Michael, 3.5 years did not feel that long, given that I've been active on commons since November 2004. I can assure you that I had a pretty good recollection of the mellow and thoughtful manner with which Michael acted. I did dig through his contribution history to look at the time leading up to the retirement and the circumstance of the retirement. I looked at a random samples of his admin activity, which was consistent with my recollections of him. Yes, I could have done the history digging for you as well, however I would have had to form a picture of you from scratch and just did not feed as comfortable doing that :-/. The diff is a bit of a moot point now, given that Michael passed his RfB with flying colors, which in my opinion validates my decision to return his admin bit. I note that this decision was supported by my 'crat colleague 99of9. And lastly if I ever retire or my flag gets stripped for inactivity I'll go for a re-RfB. As for doing one now I don't see who would benefit from that. --Dschwen (talk) 03:17, 22 January 2014 (UTC)

Hi @Nick. As always, documentation could be improved, that is not in question. My take on the restoration of bits is as follows: We cannot restore all former sysops, because in some cases there was a cloud/controversy/deadmin_vote at the time of resignation, and if there was a possibility that the community wanted the bit removed, it should stay that way until they have a chance to say otherwise. In many other cases, the reinstatement request was only a month or so after retirement from good and active service, so a new RfA would waste the community's time, and a re-sysop is basically a formality. The other cases like yours and MichaelMaggs are somewhere in between. With a long time elapsed, there is a real possibility that the standards for admin have been increased (e.g. as they clearly have at en-wiki), or the admin in question is less acquainted with policy and the community than they used to be. In these situations, the community entrust the Bureaucrats with some discretion about whether a new RfX is required, and of course if the community ever strenuously object to a decision we make, it can always be overturned. This may seem arbitrary to an outsider who doesn't know what we know or what we have looked at. Indeed it may have a small margin of error for the edge cases, but that does not make it entirely arbitrary, popularity-based, hypocritical, etc etc. Indeed your comparisons to MichaelMaggs are far from compelling in my mind, as though the only thing that mattered was the time away from Commons. You have quite dissimilar contribution histories: [22][23]. Indeed the standards for RfA seem to have moved on since 2008, because in recent years there have been numerous explicit votes predicated on the opinion that anyone with less than 500 edits to Commons space does not have enough experience. Further, MichaelMaggs had been a Bureaucrat, indicating an additional confirmation of community trust in his first period of action. And yes, we had seen him in action. I'd guess that I've seen almost *every* regular admin contributor in action in the last four or so years. You might think this last reason makes it some kind of insiders network, but frankly, I never conversed with MichaelMaggs before supporting his return to sysop, I had simply come across so much of his past work, and been impressed by it, that it was a slam dunk - not something you could easily forget in a few years. (But as a group, we did make a judgement call that a new RfB was required, because community standards are more and more demanding for positions with extra tools and responsibilities. And the community vote very clearly matched our judgement.) Some cases are on the margin, but MichaelMaggs was not. In any case, if we'd asked for a re-RfA as well, I'm sure he'd have accepted it, because as your diff points out, he's happy to subject himself to community input when it is needfully asked of him. (I'm not sure if you're serious about Dschwen needing a re-confirmation now, but if you are, I think you are a long way out of touch with his work and the regard he is held in by a vast majority of the community. Could you describe your re-RfA chances similarly?) I'm afraid that I believe your case to be an admin is marginal. If you are disappointed by this, I'm sorry, but it's certainly nothing personal, and I'd be very happy to see you get up to scratch and then re-join us in the deletions work. --99of9 (talk) 06:20, 22 January 2014 (UTC)

@99of9: Thanks for your comments. You state "In many other cases, the reinstatement request was only a month or so after retirement from good and active service, so a new RfA would waste the community's time, and a re-sysop is basically a formality" but that is clearly not what the policy states, so there's an element of discretion and clearly an element of not following policy.
Bureaucrats cannot be making statements like "should we allow judgement calls if people know the requester and vouch? Is this "deliberately opaque" use of "personal networks" or is that trusting people who know the applicant to expedite the process? Personally User:INeverCry's opinion would be enough for me to tip the scale. But seeing that people are getting out their big spoons to stir up the next tea cup tempest I'm not feeling particularly motivated to hand out bits... --Dschwen (talk) 16:25, 2 January 2014 (UTC)" and then wonder why a number of people (I'm not alone in finding Dschwen's handling of the situation troubling, btw) complain when bureaucrats suddenly decide that they don't want to make a judgement call and instead wish to rigidly apply policy, policy that they admit they would be happy to ignore.
I've spoken to a lot of people about this, people have contacted me, and there is a lot of anger about the return of Michael's permissions, if he hadn't gone through the RfB reconfirmation I am fairly certain there would have been some sort of a reconfirmation RfA cum de-adminship discussion for him. It's clearly not necessary but the manner in which his permissions were returned remain a sort of contention within the community. I'm extremely concerned if you do not recognise that.
And regarding my own RfA - no idea. Jcb thinks my edit count is too low, but others think that's inappropriate for a reconfirmation RfA and I've been told many wonderful things on how to game the RfA system, like I should run a bot on my main account to inflate my edit count. That's not really a proper solution to a broken, unfair, random and arbitrary system. Nick (talk) 12:23, 22 January 2014 (UTC)
The policy doesn't state *anything* about people who resigned their good and active service a month before. Maybe it should - documentation can be improved. Even if it's not following policy, it's not going against policy either. But this kind of situation has been *long* established in practice (since well before I became a 'crat), and it makes good sense to me not to waste community time. --99of9 (talk) 12:50, 22 January 2014 (UTC)
If people are "angry" with MichaelMaggs' sysop restoration, they should say so. I don't remember hearing much (anything?) at the time. And it didn't really show up in his re-RfB either. --99of9 (talk) 12:50, 22 January 2014 (UTC)
@99of9: Please refer to the numerous comments peppered throughout this discussion, the archived discussion from COM:BN and at Dschwens talk page that raise concerns about the way Michael was given his permission back. I don't think it would be fair for that concern to be raised at a vote supporting his RfB as he was not responsible for the return of permission but these concerns are being raised, and sadly, appear to be dismissed by bureaucrats, now including Michael who wish to retain the discretion to give returning friends of which they are acquainted sysop permissions without reconfirmation RfA. Nick (talk) 13:18, 22 January 2014 (UTC)
As Elcobbola commented at Commons talk:Administrators/De-adminship, "Retirement is, by definition, inactivity. Restoration of admin rights for MichaelMaggs without a new RfA was improper." But it dosen't mean he will fail or I/we will oppose him if he run RfA now. We can avoid such cases in future, including your case. :) Jee 13:25, 22 January 2014 (UTC)

Picture of the Year 2013 R1 Announcement[edit]

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open![edit]

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on . Click here to learn more and vote »

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

You are receiving this message because you voted in the 2012 Picture of the Year contest.

File:St Louis night.jpg question[edit]

Which 50mm lens did you use to take this photo? I'd like to replicate this on my 7D. I have an EF 24mm f/2.8 IS USM but maybe I should borrow a 28mm. I hope you didn't stick around too long after sunset. East St. Louis can be a dangerous place to be at night. (Sie können auf Deutsch antworten.) Marcus Qwertyus (talk) 08:21, 27 January 2014 (UTC)

Hi Marcus, I used the 24-105. I suspect that 24 is a bit wide. I know STL quite a bit (we have friends there I and while I still lived in Illinois we went there many times) and I am aware of East STLs reputation. For the picture I parked the car at the Riverboat Casino (?) and hiked across the rail tracks. That area did not seem too bad. It took me about an hour in the cold to find the right spot, set up, and get all the shots. Good luck! --Dschwen (talk) 14:43, 27 January 2014 (UTC)

--CEphoto, Uwe Aranas (talk) 07:18, 30 January 2014 (UTC)

Tool zum Verknüpfen von Such- bzw. Kategorieanfragen?[edit]

Fällt Dir da was ein? Danke! --CEphoto, Uwe Aranas (talk) 13:27, 5 February 2014 (UTC)

Fuer funktion a such mal nach Catscan.

-- Gerd Fahrenhorst (talk) 16:00, 5 February 2014 (UTC)

--Dschwen (talk) 16:09, 5 February 2014 (UTC)

Bus category deletions[edit]

Why have you just deleted a whole bunch of UK bus related categories? Yes, they were empty, but they were all part of a comprehensive top level geographic category system, so as such, could be left empty unless or until someone got around to diffusing the categories above. Now, that is extremely unlikely to happen for the places you just deleted, and even if it does, the creator probably won't do it right. Ultra7 (talk) 13:14, 8 February 2014 (UTC)

To give you a concrete example, Category:Bus depots in Scotland was previously comprehensively sub-categorised by region - every region had a category, even if it was empty. Now, because of your deletions, there are gaps, like Category:Bus depots in Renfrewshire, meaning that now if someone wants to improve the localisation of File:Arriva bus depot, Inchinnan - geograph.org.uk - 500843.jpg, which was placed in depots in Scotland by a bot, they have to now create Category:Bus depots in Renfrewshire, which is unlikely, and if they do, there is a good chance they will leave out one of the parent categories that the others have. Even if they get that right, they will soon get bored of this task if they have to keep creating new categories. Ultra7 (talk) 13:21, 8 February 2014 (UTC)

Hello Ultra7! We can certainly discuss restoring these cats, but to me they looked like a case of overcreation of categories. The cats were created over 3 years ago and are still empty. While I understand the need for a consistent categorization scheme I don't think that bulk creation of empty category trees is the way to go here. Should we also pre-create empty categories for bus depots/stops/providers for all other 200 countries (and their administrative regions)? The drawback is the cluttering of category pages with empty sub-cats that are useless for people looking for content and the flooding of search results with empty stubs. I'm not saying this is an easy decision, but we have to balance the needs of content curators users with those of content curators. The buld creation of empty cat sets can also have drawbacks for curators, when schemas change and suddenly thousands of cats have to be changed rather than the few which are actually populated. Lastly we are about to get actual category intersection here on commons, which should make retrieval of image sets such as Bus stops in Fooshire asimple intersection of Bus stops and Fooshire. --Dschwen (talk) 15:41, 8 February 2014 (UTC)
You have created a situation that is bad for both users and curators. There are still hundreds of non-empty cats, so schema changes would always be difficult. Those sort of changes can be done by a bot, and bots work very well on consistent schemas. By deleting the empty cats, all you've done is increase the likelihood of errors creeping in as those gaps are filled in manually, which would make it hard for bots to change in future. Curators working in this area now have a problem - does a category apparently not exist because it was empty, or have they got the name wrong? This is how duplicate categories end up getting created. Me, I now don't really relish categorising any of these images now, as I will constantly have to keep checking for that, rather than the task being a relatively simple if not tedious exercise in hotcatting. As for users, how does it help them to have a partially complete but apparently geographical schema? If there is no category for Category:Bus depots in Renfrewshire, does that mean there are no depots there? Does it mean Commons has no images at all? Does it mean the images are located under another name (the names of UK regions are a mess, which is another reason to tell people in advance what they are in any particular schema) Or does it mean that the images that would belong there simply haven't made it down that far? We both know it's the last, but users might not. They might not even know there should be a category with that name. They might be looking around in Category:Transport in Renfrewshire, and have no idea that there even is a Category:Bus depots in Scotland that they should look in if Category:Bus depots in Renfrewshire hasn't been created. Yes, tools can help in the cases where images have still not been descended, but not if you aren't even aware of the top level branches, and not for the many cases where an image will be in one half (depots etc), but not the other (places). And ultimately, those tools are meant to be complementary to hard coded cats - I have never been able to persuade anyone that having huge country level categories with hundreds of images in is better for users not interested in location, if there is a logical geographic sub-division that they can be subcatted into. For me, these trees should either be comprehensive and include all the empty possibilities (which will all contain images eventually), or they should be deleted in their entirely, with images upmerged to the country level cats. Ultra7 (talk) 18:07, 8 February 2014 (UTC)
The deleted categories are listed at /Bus categories. I don';t see how this situation is different from all other categorization efforts where we don't create empty category trees that sit around unused for several years. --Dschwen (talk) 21:00, 8 February 2014 (UTC)
I've seen plenty of topics where empty categories are created in the knowledge they will eventually be populated. It's no different to having redlinks in Wikipedia list articles. Three years is nothing in the grand scheme of things, there are geograph images that have been uncategorised for three times that length of time, and probably still won't be categorised for a few more years yet. It will be even longer now - it would have taken one mouse-click to categorise File:Arriva bus depot, Inchinnan - geograph.org.uk - 500843.jpg before these deletions. Having a list of the deleted categories is of little use to me (and of no use to anyone else), I also need to know what should go into them, which is different every time. One of the reasons I created the comprehensive set was because creating them as needed was a tedious and time consuming task that took away my concentration from the actual task at hand, identifying the actual region. Ultra7 (talk) 21:28, 8 February 2014 (UTC)
I will restore them at your request. --Dschwen (talk) 21:36, 8 February 2014 (UTC)
By the way, this actually works: For example the intersection of Bus stops and Gloucestershire. I'm working on a userinterface for it. --Dschwen (talk) 21:38, 8 February 2014 (UTC)

Thank you. Even if it doesn't work, there's always regular catscan. But I doubt most ordinary users know about any of these tools. Ultra7 (talk) 22:04, 8 February 2014 (UTC)
Pretty handy to have that list after all ;-). Anyhow the FastCCI gadget is enabled by default and shows up on the category pages in the top right corner. I'm trying to make the UI as friendly for non-technical users as possible. Let me know if I missed any categories. --Dschwen (talk) 22:09, 8 February 2014 (UTC)

From my watchlist, it appears you missed these (presumably as they are 'buses x', not 'bus x'):

Ultra7 (talk) 22:44, 8 February 2014 (UTC)

Mass deletion of empty categories[edit]

Dear Dschwen, you seem to be mass deleting empty categories. Be careful with that. Very often a whole tree gets created to sort out a lot of images (for example for a batch upload) and this way you're frustrating that effort. Multichill (talk) 10:16, 9 February 2014 (UTC)

I believe I have been careful. My (still unanswered) question on your talk page is an example. But those categories were clearly marked as necessary for an upcoming bot upload. I deleted a lot of old empty "upload by user xx" categories,a lot of "YEAR events in Switzerland" (red links to those still exist in parent cats. And having them red is a better indication of them being empty), and hundreds of categories of ALL roads, streets, aleyways and footpaths in one random city. These are all examples of overcreation of categories. --Dschwen (talk) 17:22, 9 February 2014 (UTC)

Idea[edit]

Hey Daniel,

I was playing with FastCCI, and remembered how you advocate for a search system which take into account our assessed images, against folks who sometimes seem to imply that QIs & so forth are too of a drop in the bucket to be useful on that account.

Would it be possible, using FastCCI backend, to compute the distribution of categories containing N assessed images? (throwing whatever depth parameter make sense :-)

Not sure how interesting the results would be actaully, but I’m curious. :)

Cheers, Jean-Fred (talk) 17:38, 11 February 2014 (UTC)

Yes, that would be possible. Let me think about how to do this efficiently. --Dschwen (talk) 18:20, 11 February 2014 (UTC)

Category:Comparison of Israel and Nazi Germany[edit]

Given your participation in the discussion about Latuff's stuff I thought you may want to add some sources on Category:Comparison of Israel and Nazi Germany for the categorisation as Category:Described as antisemitic. I think this is the NPOV way to do this, and above all I think it can avoid heated discussions and edit wars. mate2code 12:06, 16 February 2014 (UTC)

Request to be added to gwtoolset group[edit]

Hi. Over the last couple of months I've been doing a lot of work towards dealing with the images the British Library uploaded to Flickr Commons. (You may remember the discussion we had back in December; since then British Library/Mechanical Curator collection|the project, especially the book-level index has made quite a lot of progress.)

More recently, the BL's imaging services released a different set of 430 rather nice high-quality images, which can be viewed in this set.

I'd very much like to get these uploaded to Commons, and the easiest way to do it with all the right metadata going into the right places would seem to be the new GWtoolset extension.

May I therefore ask you to add me to the gwtoolset group, to let me see whether I can get it to work for me?

Best regards, Jheald (talk) 21:04, 20 February 2014 (UTC)

I added and fixed some translations in Catalan on Commons:WikiMiniAtlas/Translations and afterwards there are also in Ukranian. It seems I should poke someone to make them live. Right? --V.Riullop (talk) 08:02, 4 March 2014 (UTC)

Thanks Vriullop, I noticed them. I'll try to get them live as soon as I can. --Dschwen (talk) 14:37, 4 March 2014 (UTC)
Ok, added. I noticed you added Крим to uk. We may have to move that to ru soon. ;-).... :-( --Dschwen (talk) 14:54, 4 March 2014 (UTC)
Thanks. Actually I didn't add Ukrainian translations. As a Catalan, we have our own conflicts ;-) --V.Riullop (talk) 11:06, 5 March 2014 (UTC)

Gruss --Capricorn4049 (talk) 18:11, 6 March 2014 (UTC)

Deleting of civil parish categories in England[edit]

Hi Dschwen. I noticed that you deleted a number of empty civil parish categories in England last month. Please don't. These (along with settlement categories in the United Kingdom, Ireland and the Isle of Man, and community categories in Wales) were created to receive over four million images transferred from the Geograph British Isles project, a couple of million of which still have to be sorted into their appropriate categories. By deleting them, you are only ensuring that a human is going to have to recreate them, duplicating the work that was carried out previously by a bot, while they could be better employed categorising the images, and recategorising those that have been placed in incorrect neighbouring categories.

As an indication of the problem, the transfer of images from Geograph started about five years ago, and continues to this day. Only about half have so far been categorised geographically, though a greater proportion have been categorised by subject. Attempts to use a bot to sort out geographic categorisation proved disasterous, resulting in the incorrect categorisation of the great majority of images. The work of correcting this will take many years. Skinsmoke (talk) 13:54, 7 March 2014 (UTC)

Hi Skinsmoke, thanks for the notice. I won't delete any further categories. I'm surprised that automatic categorization was so fruitless. The geograph images should all be geocoded, and with a set of parish polygons the connection should be uniquely determined. Do you have a pointer to a discussion about the automated categorization? --Dschwen (talk) 15:22, 7 March 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for that. I don't think anything so sophisticated as that was tried. In the early days, I don't think they were geocoded, and the bot run tried to associate them with a category that matched Geograph's "near Anytown" description. Or anything else it could come up with, for that matter. It would probably have been better if they had simply matched to counties. Anyway, with a flood of complaints coming in, the bot runs appear to have been stopped, and a new approach of matching to grid squares, and then matching those gridsquares to a civil parish or settlement was tried. That seemed to work better, but appears to have been superceded by something else since (I'm not exactly sure what, but it now appears to be working reasonably well, though the final matching to parishes or settlements still needs to be done manually in the majority of cases).
Afraid I can't point you to any specific discussions, just that I have noticed numerous comments and discussions over the years, some of which stick in the mind. The whole Geograph import has been a massive learning curve for everyone, I think, and a lot of lessons have been learnt along the way. All of which will help if and when the images at Geograph Deutschland (a much smaller project) are imported! Skinsmoke (talk) 16:17, 7 March 2014 (UTC)
Ok, I'm just trying to decide if I could help here. I do have a bit of experience working with geo- and OSM-data, and wonder if the recent OSM-Wikipedia connection tagging could be used to automate the parish categorization. But I don't want to start any work if similar things are already being done, or if it had previously been decided not to pursue this. --Dschwen (talk) 16:34, 7 March 2014 (UTC)
I don't know the details, but I'm pretty sure it was Geographbot, run by User:Multichill. I doubt the original method was coordinate based, it seemed more like text-matching, but it was slightly before my time. All I know is, the resulting complaints pissed him off so much that he just stopped the bot runs, rather than go through the torture of finding a method that suited everyone's concerns. It is odd that it wasn't seemingly possible to get this right, they have an extensive API and most images have coordinates - though anyone taking this task on needs to know two things - not all images there have coordinates (just a basic XXnnnn grid reference), and those that do, should not just be assumed to be correct by a categorising bot, because after all it's a human who identifies them on upload, and not everyone knows how to read a map. Emptycats[edit]

Do you think you would be able to rerun your script for User:Dschwen/emptycats again? I found it very useful in finding and tagging empty categories for deletion. Or maybe it should be moved to Commons:Database reports, with BernsteinBot/MZMcBride taking care of the updates for you? TeleComNasSprVen (talk) 09:32, 8 March 2014 (UTC)

File:NoUpload.jpg[edit]

Daniel, I was just cleaning up Category:Media without a license: needs history check and run into File:NoUpload.jpg without an actual file. I usually just delete those, but you requested that the file should be kept. Is it something you need for a long-term? Or should we add some dummy license so the bot does not tag it? --Jarekt (talk) 12:47, 12 March 2014 (UTC)

I don't know how long I need this. It is a testcase for a gadget I'm planning on working on. We might as well keep this as an example for image pages without uploaded data. So if you could tag it with a dummy license that'd be great. --Dschwen (talk) 15:10, 12 March 2014 (UTC)

Quality image tool[edit]

Can't get this to work Category:Hot air balloons of Germany. Using Firefox ESR 17.0.6. Tried also Chrome 29.0.1546.66m. Tried also IE 8.0.7601.17514 64-bit (don't laugh, it is what we have at work). On the others it thinks for a bit then shows nothing ("Connecting..."). On IE it complains about security certificate errors. Tried other categories too. -- Colin (talk) 08:30, 13 March 2014 (UTC)

VICbot[edit]

Hi,

Thanks for running the VICbot. It seems to be a problem here. Regards --ArildV (talk) 09:12, 13 March 2014 (UTC)

We have a few days since other problem: the first 7 pictures regularly promoted remain blocked. Thank you for what you can do. --Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 06:41, 14 March 2014 (UTC)
Sorry about that, but I'm currently at a workshop and won't be able to deal with this for the next few days. I'm aware this has been a recurring problem, but I haven't yet figured out what is causing it. --Dschwen (talk) 17:58, 18 March 2014 (UTC)
It does not seem to me to be a major problem. We can continue to operate. We will be patient. --Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 18:43, 19 March 2014 (UTC)

VICbot problem:Value image tag not added[edit]

Hello Dschwen, thank you for running VICbot. You are doing a great job for all users in COMMONS.
To me it looks, at the moment there is a problem with your bot: as other entries in candidates VI sets, my promoted set "Fife Tibetan Rites" is not automatically removed nor was the VI label set. I hope, you can fix this easily. Let me know, if I have to remove and label my set manually, regards --J. Lunau (talk) 12:41, 30 March 2014 (UTC)

This projects bureaucrat's are asleep at the wheel? -- please wake up[edit]

As we know from COM:BUREAUCRATS, "bureaucrats are expected be capable of leading where necessary and of guiding (but not imposing their will on) policy discussions and other major community issues."

I need to draw your attention to an issue which is going to blow up in the collective faces of this project, and with the exception of User:Odder, every single one of our bureaucrats has been asleep at the wheel. We are now destined for a trainwreck, and a whole heap of fallout. Numerous chapters, including Wikimedia Israel, Wikimedia Spain, Wikimedia Argentina and Wikimedia Venezuela, are going to be in a mighty pissed mood and ready to have the head on a stick of any bureaucrat who dares come along and do what has to be done for the good of this project.

As User:Odder has opined in the discussion, him doing what needs to be done will surely have cries of "INVOLVED" levelled at him, so this is now left up to the remaining 8 bureaucrats to snap out of the slumber they seem to be in as it relates to this issue, and deal with it before it blows up further in our collective faces.

The community is waiting for immediate action on this issue. Can you please initially confirm that you have received this message, so that the community knows that you haven't died in your sleep :) russavia (talk) 00:10, 4 April 2014 (UTC)

Rest assured that I have neither died nor am I sleeping. Due to a recent move, job change, and moving again (this weekend) my time is currently very limited. I have seen a bunch of list mails on this issue and I am trying to play catch up. --Dschwen (talk) 03:14, 4 April 2014 (UTC)

Pending valued image set candidates[edit]

Hello. I have noticed that there are several closed nominations at Commons:Valued image candidates#Pending valued image set candidates. There is also written at the bottom of each closed nomination: "Voting is closed. Await automatic removal by VICbot at 0:18 or 12:18 (UTC)", but some of the nominations have not been removed for longer than a month. May I ask how often does the bot remove the closed nominations? If it is done in a different period of time, I will ask the people who take care of the page to correct the information.

Thank you very much. Jan Kameníček (talk) 16:04, 18 April 2014 (UTC)

Please take a look here. Best regards. --Angelus(talk) 20:45, 23 April 2014 (UTC)
Hello, have you read the message? :-) --Angelus(talk) 23:00, 25 April 2014 (UTC)
@Jan Kameníček @Angelus: Valued images sets must be closed manually. Please consider this: Commons:Valued image closure#Closing valued image set candidates. --Myrabella (talk) 16:15, 26 April 2014 (UTC)
I see, so the notices at the bottom of the closed nominations are wrong. I have asked whether they could be changed. Thank you for your answer. Jan Kameníček (talk) 17:43, 26 April 2014 (UTC)

Estimated_location-tag[edit]

Daniel, I am trying to wrap up this request. Is it OK to start using "source:estimate" when geolocation precision measured in meters is above some threshold? What do you think about the threshold; 100m? --Jarekt (talk) 20:13, 8 May 2014 (UTC)

Hm, I'm not sure that is a good idea. I'd rather have this tag used by the human who adds the coordinates rather than after the fact. There are plenty of reasons to give a low precision coordinate where the location is not necessarily "estimated". The location of an entire country is not precise on a meter scale, but would you call it estimated? --Dschwen (talk) 02:45, 9 May 2014 (UTC)
Ok so rather one parameter for precision, which would affect only the display, as it is now, and a separate parameter for tagging locations, which would not be shown as a dot on the map. Or maybe would be shown on a map but would be shown somehow differently than precise coordinates. I am fine with that, and we could create a maintenance category for non-estimate locations with very low precision. That would solve the point that someone raised that you should not apply the same threshold to crowded city and middle of the ocean. So low precision coordinates are now live, but at the moment they are displayed the same way as precise coordinates. We could display them differently or not display their locations on the maps at all, or leave it as it is now. --Jarekt (talk) 03:55, 9 May 2014 (UTC)
Sounds good. I may have to modify the data extraction for WikiMiniAtlas. But I have a few other projects to take care of first (before the toolserver shuts down for good). --Dschwen (talk) 04:07, 9 May 2014 (UTC)

Image viewing tool for FP[edit]

As you will know, looking at our photographs at 100% is often a disappointing experience. But the default image description page only offers a few images sizes that are actually smaller than modern HD monitors, never mind bigger 27" or 30" ones. Or pads for that matter. This is a particular problem on FP where we continue to get oppose votes because of soft 36MP images that look pin sharp at 20MP. I'd like it to be easy for folk to consider other sizes when reviewing, without having to save the image into an image viewer program and resize there.

Someone pointed out to me that the link below the image (such as https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/91/Old_Pier%2C_Salen%2C_Isle_of_Mull.jpg/1024px-Old_Pier%2C_Salen%2C_Isle_of_Mull.jpg) isn't a hard-coded link to an existing image, but can be modified to create an image of any size. By changing the "1024px" in the above we can view the image at any size we like. I've also discovered that the MediaWiki applies a small amount of sharpening when the image is reduced (by smaller than 85% size I think), which is nice.

I enjoy using your calculateMegapixels javascript tweak that you created some time ago. I wonder if it would be possible to do something similar to create links for various file sizes. Could you help write some JavaScript that adds a could of new lines after the "Original file ... " line such as:

Relative sizes: 100% (37.58MP)75% (21.14MP)50% (9.39MP)25% (2.35MP)
Fixed sizes: 36MP24MP16MP8MP6MP4MP2MP

For the relative size links, we just multiply the width by 75%, 50%, 25%. For the fixed sizes we calculate the new width:

newWidth = imageWidth * sqrt(newArea / (imageWidth * imageHeight))

I know the 100% size repeats a link we already have, but it is a handy place to put the MP for 100% and so do away with a separate piece of javascript for that. The Fixed sizes offered could be all of the above common camera MP sizes that are below the image size (perhaps more, such as 10, 12, 14, 18, 20?). How hard do you think this would be? I would find it useful for my Vector.js and we could offer it to others. Another possibility is to add this sort of thing to the FP candidate nomination template, but that would only benefit that forum rather than any image forum or general use. So I wonder if a general purpose template could be written that takes a image wikilink and a size in megapixels and produces a url to the appropriately sized image. Something like

{{sizeMP|File:Old Pier, Salen, Isle of Mull.jpg|24}}
outputing File:Old Pier, Salen, Isle of Mull.jpg (24MP).

What do you think? -- Colin (talk) 13:05, 15 May 2014 (UTC)

Hey Colin. I like the idea. Let me think about how to implement this. Without JS it won't be possible to show only sizes below the current size, and it won;t be possible to show the actual megapixel numbers. --Dschwen (talk) 14:14, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
Thanks. Yes I assumed both things would require some JavaScript. The first one, the enhancement to the image description page, would be straightforward JavaScript because I think all the sizes and links-to-thumb urls are on the page and just need manipulated. I don't know how feasible the second template idea is -- some of the information isn't to hand. I know we can get hold of the URL of the fullsize image (I use it on the photo challenge voting pages) so I guess we can fiddle with that to get a thumb url instead. But how does one get the dimensions of an image given just the wikilink to the image description page? -- Colin (talk) 14:34, 15 May 2014 (UTC)

Problem with IIP flash[edit]

Hi Dschwen it seems, the non-flash version now works perfectly, but the flash version has problems: for all(?) images it just displays a black screen without starting the SWF at all. --Alexrk2 (talk) 11:32, 25 May 2014 (UTC)

Uhm, do you maybe have a flash blocker enabled, or are browsing without flash support? :-) --Dschwen (talk) 16:18, 25 May 2014 (UTC)
Nope, I've tried it with different browsers on different computers. Maybe a problem with the swfobject.js? You changed it from local JS file to http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/swfobject/2.2/swfobject.js? But it seems to be the same JS file. However that's the only difference to the old toolserver page I can see so far. If I analyze the html elements in Chrome after loading, the #container div is empty (normally it should be replaced with the flash object). --Alexrk2 (talk) 17:08, 25 May 2014 (UTC)
Hm, I did not change that recently. And it should have never pointed there. I set it to a local copy now. Any change? --Dschwen (talk) 17:19, 25 May 2014 (UTC)
Yes, now it works. Tnx. --Alexrk2 (talk) 17:27, 25 May 2014 (UTC)
Well, thanks for the bug report! --Dschwen (talk) 17:29, 25 May 2014 (UTC)

Template:Assessments[edit]

Why not use {{Assessments}} instead of {{QualityImage}}, {{Valued image}} and {{VIS}} as nowadays most people manually remove them when existing QIs promoted into FP. Today I found {{Assessments}} can handle all VI options too. Jee 17:16, 31 May 2014 (UTC)

--Dschwen (talk) 03:53, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
Siehe Bildlizenz. So viel zu unserem ach so tollem Media-Viewer ...--Alchemist-hp (talk) 16:46, 9 June 2014 (UTC)
Ha ha! Ok, ich geb auf :-(. --Dschwen (talk) 19:20, 9 June 2014 (UTC)
Have a look at this too; attribution should be handled in a more serious way. Jee 17:31, 9 June 2014 (UTC)

Toolserver extensions (Pano360, etc)[edit]

I am a frequent user of your Pano360 and image overlay tools hosted on toolserver, and I was disappointed to find they now redirect to a page with this error:

"The page you requested is hosted by the Toolserver user dschwen, whose account has expired. Toolserver user accounts are automatically expired if the user is inactive for over six months. To prevent stale pages remaining accessible, we automatically block requests to expired content."

I hope this is a temporary situation, as I'm a big fan of those tools. Cheers, Pi.1415926535 (talk) 01:44, 17 June 2014 (UTC)

Oh, yes, I have copied the files to safety, but I will have to adapt them to tool labs. Sorry about the inconvenience. --Dschwen (talk) 21:29, 19 June 2014 (UTC)
Ah! That's good to hear. Out of curiosity, what is involved in adapting to tool labs? I'm surprised that it wasn't set up to allow simple transitions from the toolserver, but I also have no experience in that kind of coding so I might be totally off base. Help needed[edit]

Can you help about this?--MaCroatian squares Ljubicic.gifGa 18:08, 19 June 2014 (UTC)

I translate most local system messages at Translatewiki. I didn't say that untranslated messages on Commons can be translated at Translatewiki. The only goal is to translate the messages, at Translatewiki or somewhere else, it isn't matter. If you can help, it would be appreciated.--MaCroatian squares Ljubicic.gifGa 21:13, 19 June 2014 (UTC)

Let me know, which strings you would like to be translatable (and your translations for those). --Dschwen (talk) 21:26, 19 June 2014 (UTC)
OK, here they are:

I hope I'm not asking too much.--MaCroatian squares Ljubicic.gifGa 12:19, 20 June 2014 (UTC)
If it's too much, please, let me know if I can do it. Thanks again.--MaCroatian squares Ljubicic.gifGa 12:22, 20 June 2014 (UTC)
@MaGa:, none of those strings is related to the ZoomViewer. Most of them should be on TranslateWiki (except for the Request rotation stuff, I can look into that). --Dschwen (talk) 16:25, 20 June 2014 (UTC)
Well, I'll try again on the Translatewiki.--MaCroatian squares Ljubicic.gifGa 18:10, 20 June 2014 (UTC)

Migration to Toollabs?[edit]

Will “DschwenBot” be migrated from Toolserver to Toollabs? Or will there be any alternative to the template “GPS EXIF”? Kind regards, --Hasenläufer (talk) 02:47, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

Uhm... it already is migrated to tool labs. Let me check if there is an issue with that bot. --Dschwen (talk) 14:37, 26 June 2014 (UTC)
Thanks, good to know! I was warned by User:DschwenBot, stating Warning - This bot runs on the Toolserver. Toolserver will stop operating on June 30 2014, all tools that have not been migrated by that date will stop working. Operators are advised to move their bots to Toollabs. Thanks for your effort! --Hasenläufer (talk) 15:51, 26 June 2014 (UTC)
Oh, yeah, I never noticed that template parameter. It was added by another user and triggered the warning box. Anyhow the bot was moved quite a while ago. --Dschwen (talk) 21:00, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

Advice on getting dark areas at night without blowing out well-lit areas in a photo[edit]

What is the secret to getting dark areas without blowing out well-lit areas as you do at File:CTA Night.jpg?--TonyTheTiger (talk) 21:39, 29 June 2014 (UTC)

I tried some night shooting last night of the new sign on the Trump Tower at File:20140628 Trump International Hotel and Tower (Chicago) at night (1).JPG and File:20140628 Trump International Hotel and Tower (Chicago) at night (2).JPG, but had lots of troubles.--TonyTheTiger (talk) 21:41, 29 June 2014 (UTC)
Hey Tony! The CTA Night picture is combined from three exposures. The dynamic range is too large to be captured in a single shot. I can give you pointers how to combine the images. --Dschwen (talk) 15:34, 30 June 2014 (UTC)
That sounds complicated. What kind of software does that?--TonyTheTiger (talk) 03:38, 2 July 2014 (UTC)
Yeah, it is a bit of work. Hugin helps aligning the photos, and Enfuse combines them. There are other programs than those of course. --Dschwen (talk) 03:12, 5 July 2014 (UTC)
