WikiMiniAtlas for commons[edit]

Since commons already has an established practice of adding things via JS, I'd like to take your miniatlas project wide. Tell me when you think you're happy enough with the commons version for me to do this. --Gmaxwell 20:19, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

Ok, sounds good. Did you plan to add my js source to the global js file, or just include my source from a global file. Including would mean putting a lot of trust into my hands, but on the other hand I would be able to continue developing it. --Dschwen 19:46, 26 February 2007 (UTC)
Better if you can edit MediaWiki namespace js files yourself: Commons:Administrators/Requests and votes/Dschwen. I hope you will accept. --Gmaxwell 20:19, 26 February 2007 (UTC)
Sure, thanks for the nomination. This is a good motivation to clean up the WMA code, too! :-) --Dschwen 20:56, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

So now that we've given you the keys to the kingdom... :) Are you ready for me to blow up the site yet? --Gmaxwell 23:32, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

Uhm, sure. Where are you going to include it Mediawiki:monobook.js? --Dschwen 07:10, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
You probably copy it into MediaWiki:Wikiminiatlas.js then call that from monobook.js. If you'd like, I'll actually put it in the monobook.js, but I'd rather you copy it over into the mediawiki ns, it's your work afterall. --Gmaxwell 07:15, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
Sure, I'll do that right away. --Dschwen 07:17, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
Ok, moved to the MW namespace, and added to monobook.js. I leave it commented out for today and use the time to set up a page for it, start a translation effort, and tailor the code to commons and its many language versions. --Dschwen 07:28, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
Hmm... need to make the extract script grab the image aspect ratios. I've coded a tool to improve the image layout by precomputing the 'best' images for every zoom level by eliminating the lowest ranked overlapping images, but to do it right I'll need to know the images aspect ratio. --Gmaxwell 21:07, 11 March 2007 (UTC)
Sounds good. Aren't the image dimensions in the DB? --Dschwen 21:19, 11 March 2007 (UTC)
Which reminds me: a patch to thumb.php to limit the height of the returned thumbnail would be very useful. Right now very narrow and tall pictures get way more screen real estate than wide panoramic images... --Dschwen 21:30, 11 March 2007 (UTC)
Width and height are in the database, yes. Do you want truncation or just limiting the width if the height is too big? If the latter, thats easy enough to do in your software if you know the width and height.. If you want the images cropped that's hard. --Gmaxwell 21:55, 11 March 2007 (UTC)
No cropping, just adjusting the width. Right, I should extract the image dimensions from the DB (too bad they are not in the XML dumps...). --Dschwen 22:40, 11 March 2007 (UTC)
We do dump image.sql though, which has the data. --Gmaxwell 22:42, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

Market in Farafenni[edit]

Hi. The weekly market in Farafenni indeed takes place at the northern edge of the town. The coordinates that I put are correct according to the GoogleEarth program or Google Earth maps (they point just to the center of the marketplace). In Farafenni there is a special place designed just for the weekly market. --Botev 10:14, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

Great! Thanks for correcting the geo tag. Africa is still a bit low on geocoded images [1]. --Dschwen 11:09, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

An offering for our new administrator from your comrades...

Dschwen/Archive3, congratulations! You now have the rights of administrator on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and Commons:Deletion requests), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care.

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons @ irc.freenode.net.

EugeneZelenko 15:39, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

Awesome, my first action as an admin is to embarass myself by mistakenly editing the welcome template... :-)
Thanks for the pie anyways! --Dschwen 20:26, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
Congratulations for becoming Administrator. I did not notice your candidacy, but I would have voted for you, too, of course. Longbow4u 11:59, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
Thx, Gmaxwell kindly nominated me as we were thinking of enabling the MiniAtlas globally on commons. --Dschwen 13:12, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

Manual labour[edit]

Ups... Didn't know about this bot. Well, it appeared that QIs and notices were quite a bit behind schedule, wherefore I thought that something should be done. But let the bot take care of this. And yes. It was manual. Thanks for your notice (have been away for a while) --Thermos 17:56, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, the bot is not yet active. I'm in the process of requesting bot status for it. But I suppose if all goes according to plan it will be up next week. --Dschwen 18:01, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
Have you stopped now? The bot won't be able to finish off half-done promotions (just in case you thought so). --Dschwen 18:06, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
Let's agree that I do February and stop there (this might take a while). After all, there are no open nominations in February any more. --Thermos 18:32, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
Sounds good, thanks for all the hard work! --Dschwen 18:56, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
You are welcome... To be honest, it just started to look too messy for my tastes after almost a month of unattended images. Something that I was afraid that would put some potential contributors off. Anyhow, there is still the categorisation to do, but most important of all, the contributors have at least been noticed/credited and the images should now have the QI tags. --Thermos 19:13, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
Ok, just to keep a record of it for the categorization, could you put the images you promoted onto this page in a gallery? --Dschwen 19:21, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
Can do it, but I am signing off for today. As said, takes a bit of time. --Thermos 19:49, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

Commons:WikiMiniAtlas[edit]

Hi Dschwen, I thought perhaps it would be possible to include a little box below the Commons:WikiMiniAtlas, where you can enter the name of a location, e. g. "Göttingen", then the WikiMiniAtlas would fetch the location data from the German Wikipedia dump and center on this location, with the zoom data from the Wikipedia-location, be it city, region, waterbody etc. Perhaps later it would be possible to facilitate alternative spelling of the locations from other languages, via the interwikilinks. Longbow4u 11:56, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

Your lastest Image: New York[edit]

Hey Dschwen; I'm visiting New york soon and I want to know how did you create the image that you took from New York on Top of the Rock? You took 4 images and stitched them together with a program (if you did what program you used)? Did you also use a tripod? I'll be glad to know more about this. Thanks a lot. --Arad 18:05, 10 March 2007 (UTC)

Hey Arad, the use of tripods is not allowed on the GE building (like most other observation decks I believe) so I had to rely on a steady hand (next tim I'll bring a beanbag...). I used hugin and panotools to stich it all together. Good luck and have fun, it's an amazing city! --Dschwen 19:15, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
I would be nice if something like a c clamp with a flat plate and screw existed. In places like this there usually many places you could clamp on to, then just attach a pano head on the clamp and you have a stable surface. If anyone finds such a device, let me know. :) --Gmaxwell 19:48, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
Sneaky! But I'm pretty sure you'd get a tap on the shoulder by one of the security bullies swaming the observation deck :-). I Guess it should be fairly easy to buld yourself. I have a cheap bracket to mount a flash to the side of my camera, and the screw that fits into the tripod hole of the camera can be easily removed. So just buy a c-clamp at a hardware store, drill a hole in it, get yourself one of those screws and bam, you got yourself a camera-clamp. I will give it a shot for sure! --Dschwen 08:08, 11 March 2007 (UTC)
Hahaha. Good ideas coming up. Thanks a lot Dschwen for the answer. --Arad 23:52, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

WikiMiniAtlas DB[edit]

Hi. Good work on the WikiMiniAtlas! I talked to Kolossos on de:Wikipedia_Diskussion:WikiProjekt_Georeferenzierung/Wikipedia-World/en#Commons_images_layer about using the data elsewhere as well, and then tried putting the data in Google Earth. It seems to be working nicely and I'd like to have it all there, but I didn't start writing the code for parsing the dumps properly, for all coordinate templates and category placements. Would you happen to have nicely designed sql files to start working on? --Para 12:37, 18 March 2007 (UTC)

Nope, sorry, I'm not using a RDBMS for the MiniAtlas. Instead I wrote an optimized server program which sorts the data for each zoomlevel and keeps it in memory in a quadtree structure for fast access. This application would most likely put too much stress on the toolserver db. I have a script to parse the dumps, but it outputs an intermediate format for my server program. --Dschwen 17:17, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
Any data processed further from the dumps or scripts to do so would be helpful, if you have any to share. --Para 18:42, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
This is how my processed data from the dump looks. Columns are:
Lon Lat Score ¦ CoordParameters ¦ Image
Score is calculated from Picture of the Day appearances and Quality Image or Featured Picture awards. --Dschwen 20:59, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
Oh, that's nicely digested! Not many of the images seem to have a score bigger than 0, looks like the best Commons images need some tagging. What is the load like on the toolserver? I was thinking of more ways to count the score, and maybe CheckUsage could be used for all geocoded images, like one image checked a minute and each at seven day intervals, or something like that. It would show image popularity more than the limited quality status on Commons. --Para 22:27, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
Mh yeah, I thought about checkusage too. Maybe with a rate limiter it might be doable, not once the number of geocoded images increases substantially. --Dschwen 08:44, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

Huch[edit]

Nee, alles richtig gemacht :-).
Das klappt also jetzt, siehe [2]?
--Dschwen 10:34, 4 April 2007 (UTC)

Uncut star

I notice that the spiral forms a 'star of david' pattern, have you got a slightly larger area crop that doesn't cut off the lower corners? --Tony Wills 23:59, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

Tough to take due to limited space and an ever changing image when you move. I'll check if find a complete one, but as far as I remember this was the best I got. --Dschwen 00:16, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
Found one and cropped it a bit. --Dschwen 13:40, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

Hey, LittlePete. Great that you contacted me, I have been meaning to ask you what prompted your leaving of the project? --Dschwen 19:37, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

Got some work for you[edit]

Hello Daniel! Since you told me about yourself being admin and stuff, could you please do a job for me? I've found out that two image files were mistaken, Image:Han guangwu di.jpg and Image:Guangwudi1.jpg, which both don't depict Emperor Guangwu of Han but his predecessor, Emperor Wen of Han. So I've marked them for renaming. Would you kindly tell me what to do next? I've unlinked them on de.wp but I don't know about the other wikis, since I don't speak Japanese and so on. Sincerly, .:. Sarazyn (alias Jonathan) 20:35, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

Reuploar them with the propper name, and tag the old images with {{badname}}. Make sure you attribute the original authors and use the same license. I'll take care of the deletion and replacement in the other wikis tomorrow. Night. --Dschwen 20:59, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

I replaced all the pictures now, that should be OK. So all you gotta do now is Special:delete. .:. Sarazyn 11:02, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

CH_Julier_Pass_summit_2.jpg review[edit]

You wanted a review of your image, well this is a bit long for the QIC page so I present my thoughts here instead :-). The picture depicts snow, a few rocks and road markers, distant power pylons and mountains. I find it very difficult to get an idea of scale, the whiteness and mist mean there is little detail (similar to white-out conditions), the power pylons are probably a long way off judging from their apparent size, but I'm confused because the line of them seems to run on to a couple of twin power poles ... maybe these pylons are very small rather than a long way off? Is that a mountain or is that a hill? Most of the picture is white so there are large areas of little detail or structure. A few items in the left foreground are relatively detailed and crisp, but overall the mist makes the image washed out - the subject is the pass but the pass is shrouded in mist. I am impressed with the exposure, you have avoided over-exposure with all that glare. It probably faithfully shows a snow scene in the mist, but that makes for an uninteresting picture - perhaps that is more a FP issue, so I have not declined it but left it for maybe someone else who appreciates the qualities of a white on white scene :-) --Tony Wills 12:02, 4 April 2007 (UTC)

Blackbird[edit]

You must have a steady hand :-). Thanks for explaining about the bokeh. The noise effect I was commenting on can be seen at 800% magnification - the background is made up of a mosaic of 8x8 pixel squares, each square seems to be rotated 90 degrees from its neighbours, this leaves sharp colour discontinuities that I think result in the noisy look (The same effect can be seen in Image:Superb_wren.jpg - I'm not sure what processing he's done to produce it, but presumably blending). I would be interested in seeing your original images to compare, perhaps you could add them to the page you were doing about other processing techniques. --Tony Wills 01:15, 7 April 2007 (UTC)

Question about photo quality[edit]

What do rewievers of QI images mean when they say a picture is noisy? As for my knowledge of english, that word is linked to sound. And how can that "noise" be avoided? Thank you, --Orlovic 18:29, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

Noise is also a term in signal processing, not only specific to sound signals. Noise in digital photos can be seen in areas of supposedly uniform color, where every pixel has a slightly different brightnes or color instead. Generally you can avoid noise by choosing low ISO numbers in your camera settings. Or by buying an even more expensive camera :-). --Dschwen 18:36, 9 April 2007 (UTC)
