gigapan.org[edit]

Hallo Dschwen, schon http://www.gigapan.org gesehen? Hätte ich hier auch gerne :-). --Kolossos (talk) 20:52, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

--Kolossos (talk) 10:42, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

Some difficulties in displaying all scopes correctly in Commons:Valued images/sample[edit]

Hallo Daniel,

Occasionally there are some problems in correctly displaying the scope for an image in the sample gallery. Like, currently, we have Image:Pula Aerial View.jpg on display, but here the displayed scope also includes the secons parameter to {{VI}}. I think what is special to this VI is that it has two links in its scope: [[w:Pula|Pula]], [[w:Croatia|Croatia]]. Maybe you have some regex filter which does not take this use case into account? -- Slaunger (talk) 06:31, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

Suggest DschewnBot description mention C:Geocoding[edit]

Maybe the User:DschwenBot page should mention its relevance to Commons:Geocoding so people who notice the bot will more easily discover that community. -- SEWilco (talk) 17:00, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

Yest, that idea is being discussed at Template talk:User location. We just haven't agreed on the category title :-). Meanwhile you can use Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:User location. --Dschwen (talk) 21:28, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

Notice of namespace-rename "Image" -> "File"[edit]

Dear user, the MediaWiki developers recently announced that the "Image:" namespace is going to be renamed to "File:". "Image:" will remain an alias. The canonical namespace name wgCanonicalNamespace will change from "Image" to "File".

I noticed that you use wgCanonicalNamespace in either your monobook.js page or a JavaScript file in your userspace (check this list).

Please check and replace all occurrences of

wgCanonicalNamespace == "Image"

with

wgNamespaceNumber == 6

to ensure that your scripts keep working. Thanks! --Dschwen (talk) 18:41, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for letting me know. Somewhat disappointing, as the whole point of CanonicalNamespace was that it's not supposed to change. Rather than use NamespaceNumber, I just went ahead and changed to File now despite it breaking my scripts for a week. Superm401 - Talk 06:27, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

Another small favour[edit]

Hi Daniel,

I am lazy, and I was wondering if you could add a tiny bit of functionality to VICbot in relation to doing MVR closures. Specifically I would like to enquire if it would be possible for you to implement Closing most valued reviews, step 4 by copying processed MVRs to the relevant monthly log page? Saw the Biden WP:FPC in passing. Gee, what a terrible review... -- Slaunger (talk) 12:53, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

YASF[edit]

Hi Daniel,

Yet Another Small Favour:

We have converged on a sequence of VI subpages to use for topical VI galleries. The list is here:

I have created all the subpages (now, that was boring!) with empty galleries. Could you make a VI tool for adding newly promoted VIs into a relevant topical gallery. Just to make it a challenge and avoid complete reuse of the QI tool, I would like to enquire if it would be possible to use the scope as caption for each image, and, if possible sort them alphabetically by scope in each gallery? Cheers, -- Slaunger (talk) 22:33, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

Oh, and it would be really nice is the subpage with imges to assign a topical VI gallery is initialized with all VIs so far. -- Slaunger (talk) 22:38, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
Hi Daniel, have you thought about this "favour"? Do you think it is feasible, do you have time for this? Most of it would be very similar to QI categorization, but maybe some specific issues will arise with an equivalent to the QIhelper JS script (since, ideally, not only the image, but also the scope should be displayed). I thank you in advance if you can tell us your opinion about it. --Eusebius (talk) 20:41, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
Hi Daniel, I have news about that... I've adapted QIhelper.js in a VIhelper.js (please don't look at file history :-P), and Commons:Valued images/Recently promoted is now ready to accept images. Input (by VICbot?) should be lines in the form: "File:foobar.jpg|VI scope (with links)", and output will be in the form: "File:foobar.jpg|{{VICbotMove|VI scope (with links)|Some/Path}}. Then, the bot should remove the line and include "File:foobar.jpg|VI scope (with links)" in the gallery (already created by Slaunger) at Commons:Valued images/Some/Path. There are currently examples at Commons:Valued images/Recently promoted. So, if you agree to modify VICbot to take care of that stuff, it will be a little bit different from QI categorization, since scope has to be processed as well (and it can include one or several links). Best regards, --Eusebius (talk) 22:22, 18 January 2009 (UTC)
Hi. EuseBot does the job, but it would be really better if VICbot could populate Commons:Valued images/Recently promoted itself at promotion time, since it already has direct access to the newly promoted VIs. No big deal though, as long as I don't pay for CPU time on the toolserver. --Eusebius (talk) 12:34, 21 March 2009 (UTC)

Pano question[edit]

Hi. I'm wondering if there is any template that bring the Image:360° Tolland Trig Station Panorama.jpg as if the image is totally joined? Bidgee (talk) 11:34, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

unfortunately this is currently not possible (not supported by the panorama viewer). If the edges to not join up then it is not a 360° image and therefore inappropriately named. What did you use to assemble the image? I'd consider restitching so it joins up. --Dschwen (talk) 14:08, 13 October 2008 (UTC)
The image is fine[1] (Both ends line up fine and is just how I viewed it in person). Only issue I have is the powerlines as it was windy. Software used was Panorama Maker 4. Bidgee (talk) 06:35, 14 October 2008 (UTC)
Yes, the image is indeed fine. I added the horizon parameter to straighten out the horizon. The value is the percentage of the image that is sky. In your image the horizon is about 65% of the imageheight down from the top. Don't worry about the powerline. --Dschwen (talk) 12:33, 14 October 2008 (UTC)

VICbot not running[edit]

Hi Daniel,

It seems like VICbot has not been running for 1-2 days. Has it gone on an extended weekend? -- Slaunger (talk) 21:21, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

Hey Slaunger. The bot has been running, but due to a replication downtime it does not see the lates developments on the VIC page. Give it some time. As soon as the db has caught up it'll continue working. Sorry. Also, I'm kind of busy with work right now, so the bot extension will have to wait a while. --Dschwen (talk) 02:07, 14 October 2008 (UTC)
Ok Daniel. Thanks for the explanation. And I am full of understanding wrt. the bot work. As we are all doing voluntary unpaid work here, bot work should be done when there is time for it. -- Slaunger (talk) 06:26, 14 October 2008 (UTC)
Are you sure nothing is wrong with VICbot? It has not run for a long time now whereas I have noted QICbot has processed nomination, while VICs closed more than three days ago are still staled on the candidates page. Do you have any idea when the replication lag will be fixed? -- Slaunger (talk) 22:09, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

Daniel - I work for a company that is just launching a footwear collection for Wenger. Would you allow me to use this picture or do you have others that might help to represent the heritage?

From User:Myrecovery, To User:Dschwen[edit]

Thank you for warning me. I have stopped unnecessary editing in talk pages. I have question with creating and using user templates in user pages of Wikimedia Commons. I tried but did not understand the WikiText Language for creating and formatting templates and tables. I am interested in learning advanced level of vector graphics, HTML, Wikitext and creating templates and tables. Please tell me the WikiText tag for the substituton of the HTML tag <br />.

You will get the effect of <br /> by inserting a blank line. And you can replace your span markup with <pre></pre>. pre is semantic markup (which means the tag describes what the text is for, and not just how it should look), span-usage like in your post is not, and should be avoided as well :-). There is no specific markup for creating templates, just to include them, but I think you know how that works ({{templatename}} or {{User:Myrecovery/myLittleTemplate}}). Table syntax is described in meta:Help:Tables, just check out the examples and play with them (somewhere in your user space, for example here). Also, please sign your posts with ~~~~ (that way you can use the subject line for the actual subject ;-) --Dschwen (talk) 14:44, 15 October 2008 (UTC)

FPX bot needed[edit]

Hi Daniel,

I wonder if it would be easy to program a bot to remove FPX tagged images from FPC and arquive them in the log page. FPC closing has become quite a burden and that would represent a significant help. -- Alvesgaspar (talk) 23:31, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

Some questions from User:Myrecovery[edit]

Hey, please reply to these qustions.

  • What should be discussed in user talk page
  • How can I sort the Babels/Userboxes in my user page like they are sorted in the user page of User:Leyo?

--Amit Gomes (talk) 14:17, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

  • People will come to you if they have questions that should be discussed on your talk page. When I just signed up I was always disappointed when I didn't get new messages. As you can see that has changed, quite a bit. The more involved you get, the mpre discussion will take place at your talk page.
  • check out the {{Babel|de|en-3|fr-3|es-1|la-1}} template on Leyo's page. That is how he includes the language boxes. The order of the language codes is the order in which the babel boxes appear. --Dschwen (talk) 17:12, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

Template:Tmbox[edit]

Good day, why is this out of project scope? I can clearly see it's usage & why does it need "consensus"? --Kanonkas(talk) 15:45, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

Hello. I commented on that on the VP. One user wanting a cosmetic change to his talk page is no reason to import a set of templates from en.wp and bloat our global css in the process. Tmbox is for article talk page boxes, mostly maintenance boxes. There is no equivalent use for this on commons (yet). --Dschwen (talk) 16:57, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
Well it was still in use on just one template & was created before that VP thread if I recall & I can't see any "consensus" problem with that. --Kanonkas(talk) 17:27, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
It was used on two or three pages. And there is definitely a need for consensus when it comes to adding stuff to the global files that are served to each user. A template that is used on a handfull of pages does not justify that. --Dschwen (talk) 18:29, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
Huh? I'm just using this for Template:!vote and that "global stuff" doesn't even make sense to me, I guess it's because of that VP thread you're saying that but what's the big deal to just leave it & have it on just that template above? Do we need consensus for that? --Kanonkas(talk) 19:30, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
If that "global stuff" doesn't make sense to you we can stop discussing this right now and continue once you've read up on the global style sheet file, and its connection to the template. --Dschwen (talk) 19:49, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
No as this template was being used on that template, just because it got into a debate about "global stuff" doesn't give you the right to delete it saying there is no consensus, nor out of project scope as it is being used. I fail to see where it says that en.wp stuff can't be imported here & be used. --Kanonkas(talk) 20:54, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
Sorry, right now I do not have the time to go into a lot of detail (busy in real life). Again, please come back when you understand that "global stuff". Copying a template over, just to use it in one other template does not make sense to me. And when the themplate needs additional CSS style declarations added to the site wide stylesheet it makes even less sense. --Dschwen (talk) 21:33, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
Well it's fine by me if you can improve this, then restore/recreate it or ask somebody else to fix the messy code. Best regards, --Kanonkas(talk) 23:55, 9 November 2008 (UTC)

VICbot and the "subpage" parameter[edit]

Hi, I'm working in the VI project and it appears that VICbot misses a little feature. When putting the VI template on the promoted image, it does not take care of the "subpage" parameter when it should be set. It is the case when a same image is a VI for several scopes (for instance both VI templates on this image point to the same subpage), or when the image is modified during the reviewing process (see for instance this VICbot action and my correction). The initial discussion about that is here. I thank you in advance if you can improve the bot. Nothing urgent, of course! --Eusebius (talk) 13:58, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

viewing panoramic images[edit]

Hallo Daniel,

This lunchtime I noticed that you have implemented a panoramic viewer within commons. Great! Although most of my stitches are less than 360 degrees, I got hold of one of my 360degrees images Image:Ardnish Peninsula01 360 2004-07-25.jpg to see how it works. Dankeschön. -- Klaus with K (talk) 14:05, 7 November 2008 (UTC)

Heine's Camera location[edit]

Hallo Daniel,

Danke, Florian Prischl (talk) 19:36, 5 December 2008 (UTC)

--Kolossos (talk) 18:14, 12 November 2008 (UTC)
Was?!

--Dschwen (talk) 21:18, 11 November 2008 (UTC)

My name is Alan Edwards and I am the Assistant Editor at 'The School Magazine', a government publication that goes out to public schools across the State of New South Wales in Australia. I would love to use your cow picture on the cover of one of our issues in 2009 as we are featuring a few articles, stories and poems on cows.

I am not sure how I go about getting your permission to do this. We are a non-profit government publication and the magazine would be printed in a once-only run of about 40,000. It is then read by Grade 5 kids and I know they would get a real kick out of that shot!

We have a limited budget, but can pay for the use of the image if you wish. If you could get back to me, it would be much appreciated.

Best regards,

Alan Edwards Assistant Editor The School Magazine <alan.edwards@det.nsw.edu.au>

Hi Dschwen, Mike L. sent me ;).

Would you please be as kind as to pass by Template_talk:Painting#Hopefully_more_clear_now and comment on my idea of a popup-or-similar design for "media used"? (=question/note 3). Thanks. Wolfgang (talk) 18:20, 23 November 2008 (UTC)

Remark on noise reduction[edit]

Hi, thanks for your reviews. When you say you don't like my use of denoising, do you mean in that particular picture or in my pictures in general? In your opinion, which software should a beginner use for denoising? Thanks in advance, --Eusebius (talk) 20:59, 24 November 2008 (UTC)

That was a more general observation after seeing a couple of your pics. IMO a beginner should use no denoising. Denoising is a destructive editing step. It's fine on a blurred background or the sky, but denoising is not a silver bullet against low quality imaging devices. Try to use a low ISO number in your camera to prevent noise when taking the pictures. --Dschwen (talk) 22:02, 24 November 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for your answer. In pictures that are a few months old, like the Parthenon, my ISO settings were not good, but now my camera is almost constantly at 64 ISO and I almost always have noise in the sky, this is why I use denoising on most pictures... --Eusebius (talk) 06:11, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

Noise in Hubble Ultra Deep Field photograph[edit]

G'day, I noted that you have a physics background. There is some discussion at w:Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/delist/Hubble Ultra Deep Field about the source of noise in the replacement version. I wondered if you might be able to weigh in with your opinion on the matter. Noodle snacks (talk) 00:21, 26 November 2008 (UTC)

Dear Mr. Snacks ;-). I commented on that page. While the edits are pleasing to the eye, and the noise is IMO a simple physical limitation of the imaging device (thermal noise, which is independent of the actual image) I still would not feel comfortable editing an image that has been worked on by professional astronomers. Well, maybe if the edit is mentioned in the caption it is no big deal. --Dschwen (talk) 01:00, 26 November 2008 (UTC)

Image:Loxahatchee boardwalk.jpg[edit]

Daniel. Concerning this image. I don't want to pick a fight over this with you. I respect you here too much for that. The thing is that in this particular case it is almost impossible, with all the epiphytic lichens to reach a DOF that does justice to the reality. You're bound to end up with blurry stretches whether close-up or in the background. Sorry about that. Lycaon (talk) 19:44, 26 November 2008 (UTC)

Its alright. The picture was about the boardwalk, replacing a picture in the Loxahatchee article on en.wp. I have better pictures of the lichens and will upload them soon. In any case I withdrew the picture as it is not worth the fuss (unlike my Kankakee aerial shot - that is worth the fuss  ;-) ). --Dschwen (talk) 20:22, 26 November 2008 (UTC)

MediaWiki:QICSigs.js[edit]

This script prevents me from posting at Commons:Quality images candidates/candidate list. I think the end of function convertSignatues should read:

   ...
   if( QICSigs.old_onsubmit ) return QICSigs.old_onsubmit();
   return true;
 },

but I'm reluctant to change a script that's been used for so long. FF2 at least requires onsubmit handlers to return true if the submission is to proceed, and false if not. Apparently not returning anything is seen as a "false" by FF2. The script does properly replace the four tildes by my username and timestamp, but then does not submit the form. On the upload form, i always return a value (either true or the old submit handler's return value). BTW, are you sure that oldonsubmit is always a callable function? Can't it also be a string if it's defined in the HTML source as <form onsubmit="foo; return true;">... ? Because of that, I have UploadForm.call_onsubmit... Lupo 14:11, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

You might be right. But the fact that nobody complained so far makes me wonder :-). I've added it anyways. There certainly is no harm to it. --Dschwen (talk) 15:57, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
Nobody complaining about it is what made me refrain from touching that script :-) Anyway, it works now. Thanks! Lupo 16:21, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
Oh, and of course you are right about the onsubmit string thing. But who would set it to a string? I'd rather not clutter up my code for a fringe case that cannot happen (unless the mediawiki developers make a really ugly change). And script editors who change the onsubmit into a string should be blocked anyways ;-) --Dschwen (talk) 16:00, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
Sure :-) Lupo 16:21, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

Curious[edit]

Hi, how can you tell that this picture has been downsized? --Eusebius (talk) 21:25, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

Twelve megapixel is rather small for a panoramic image like this, and the image is too sharp. Yep. Too sharp. Call me greedy, but I'd prefer if people upload their images as large as possible and do not hold back. Downscaling is essentially just bs'ing the reviewers. --Dschwen (talk) 21:55, 2 December 2008 (UTC)
OK, a guess based on experience then... I understand the downsampling issue (although I'm not sure I'm totally convinced that the no-downsampling QIC policy is really fair) but my aim was not to trigger another debate on the subject! Thanks for your reply. --Eusebius (talk) 22:02, 2 December 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, I understand your fairness concerns, and I've been on both ends of that stick. But hey, whats fair in life? ;-) Remember that QI should not be about petting some photographers egos, it should be a selection of high quality images for our users. Unfortunately there is no fairness in some cheap compact cameras producing crappy pictures and some ridiculously expensive DSLRs producing great images. Anyhow, we should at least encourage uploaders to always upload the best possible versions for our users. --Dschwen (talk) 22:08, 2 December 2008 (UTC)
I'm totally ok with your last sentence, it's just that QI reviewing policies tend to induce a bias against it. Don't worry, I don't put my ego in my pictures. I'm used to receiving reviews IRL and I think I know how to make them useful for me. But consider a fictional 3Mpix picture of QI quality. If it has been taken by a good or lucky (but old?) 3Mpix compact camera, then it can be promoted. If it has been taken by a 5Mpix bridge (with photosites crowded on a small captor for marketing reasons) and then downsampled to reach the effective resolution of the captor, then it cannot be promoted. It has been said several times that QI review was about the technical quality of the picture and not about the way it was taken, but in the case of downsampling criticisms it is not true anymore: we're judging the process and not only the result. When I say "unfair", I think about that, not about photographers or nominators. We punish downsampling here, we don't assess quality.
Note: I don't mean to quarrel or argue with you (or with anybody), I don't need a reply on that. It's just that since we went on that ground, I'd rather be sure that you understand what I meant. Furthermore, I'm not sure my point of view on the issue is totally consistent/coherent for the moment. --Eusebius (talk) 22:27, 2 December 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, you are right. It is a fine line between encouraging upload of fullsize images, and unfair bias against people with better cameras (which it boils down to in your example). As I said, I've experienced both sides of the story personally. At least for me downscaling alone is not reason to oppose (in the Bitschweil Pano case I merely noted it). --Dschwen (talk) 23:00, 2 December 2008 (UTC)
Yes, I've noted your reaction. Thanks for sharing your insights on the subject! Regards, --Eusebius (talk) 09:28, 3 December 2008 (UTC)

VICbot[edit]

Hi Daniel, do you know why VICbot hasn't touched the candidate list for a few days? A problem on the tool server? Or maybe you're working on the categorization extension? :-P Regards, --Eusebius (talk) 12:33, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

Oh no! I'm getting status mails from the bot twice daily, and the top of the email always looked normal, but there is an error at the end
print "Candidate %s is missing cruicial parameters" % name.encode("utf-8")
UnicodeDecodeError: 'ascii' codec can't decode byte 0xc3 in position 28: ordinal not in range(128)
One of the candidates seems to have an odd name, and I botched up the unicode handling. I'll have a look ath the script. --Dschwen (talk) 15:57, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
Mmmh, some candidates have accents, or "ç", but it has happened already in the past without problem. The last MVR entry is the only candidate introduced after the last visit of the bot and before its first failed visit. --Eusebius (talk) 16:17, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
Ok, fixed. The error was triggered by an undecipherable nominator signature [8]. I did not debug the output of the error message (never hapened before). --Dschwen (talk) 17:14, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
Thanks a lot. While you're taking care of VICbot, it still has an issue (diff) with one picture when preparing the samples... --Eusebius (talk) 17:25, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, I know what the problem is. Essentially it is impossible to get the scope by regular expression. I'll have to write a miniparser that counts opening and closing [[ and {{ tags. --Dschwen (talk) 17:50, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
Welcome in the wonderful world of context-free grammars ;-) --Eusebius (talk) 18:03, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
It's probably a bit presumptuous, but I think I might be able to help, depending on where you fetch your information from. Starting from the nomination pages, I was able to capture scopes properly without regular expressions and without a parser. My method is likely suboptimal, though. Anyway, if you accept to show me the code responsible for generating the sample set, I'd love to have a look at it (and I understand if you say no, I don't like showing my own code :-P). --Eusebius (talk) 12:36, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

Hi Daniel, this one is still stuck at the top of the candidate list... --Eusebius (talk) 12:29, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

Yeah that was due to a leading space in the subpage parameter [9]. I made the bot a little more robust now. --Dschwen (talk) 14:33, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
Thanks a lot! --Eusebius (talk) 14:42, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
  • Hi Daniel (I'll post VICbot issues in the same thread, unless you prefer otherwise). VICbot has properly promoted this picture today, but it wasn't included in Commons:Valued image candidates/tag galleries. I thought it was because it came from an MVR, but another VI coming from an MVR (the red panda) is present in the list... No big deal here, though. Regards, --Eusebius (talk) 17:45, 1 January 2009 (UTC)
    • Oh, I think this is not a bug, but a feature. Whenever the bot finds a gallery matching the scope on its own, then he adds the little tag himself [10]. Thus there is no need to list the picture on the tag galleries page. This conversely relates to the problem of images not appearing on the by scope page. The images only appear there, if the bot cann find a gallery matching the given scope. So images either show up on the tag gallery or the by scope page. My suggestion: enforce scopes that are also gallery names, or that contain links to galleries (the bot understands both). --Dschwen (talk) 17:54, 1 January 2009 (UTC)
      • I'm sorry, I knew that the bot didn't add the pictures for which he found a gallery. I might be a bit tired today... However, I see no logical reason why VIs added to the tag gallery page should not be added to the by scope (since the page has, semantically speaking, nothing to do with galleries, it points to pictures). If there is actually such a selection, could it be removed (so that all the VIs are added to the "by scope" page)? About your last suggestion, we try to include a link to a gallery in the scope when it is possible (and when usual reviewers are careful enough), but we do not create a gallery for each submission, and I don't think we will (mainly because the nomination and closure phases can already be seen as "not so simple", and it would add another manual step). Thank you anyway for your reply & remarks. --Eusebius (talk) 18:56, 1 January 2009 (UTC)
The original intention from my side was also that all VI should be on the "by scope" page irrespective of weather there is a gallery of the matching name. If this is not the case it is an error from my part in properly describing the requirements for the bot, when I requested it to be implemented.
I do not think it is a good idea to require that there has to exist a gallery of the same name of the scope. Galleries can be renamed, or split up, and I do not think that would be very healthy. And last, but not least, happy new year from Denmark! -- Slaunger (talk) 09:05, 2 January 2009 (UTC)

Hi Daniel. I think you should see to it that VICbot always use the "subpage" parameter in the VI template (for promoted VIs), even when it does not seem necessary. Otherwise, when an image is renamed, it breaks the link to the review page. It has occured once recently, and if not all VIs are watched by aware users, slight problems could remain uncorrected. I let you decide whether this update is useful or not. Best regards, --Eusebius (talk) 16:12, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

Thanks Eusebius. That is a good suggestion, I did not think about candidate renamings. I just changed the bot accordingly. --Dschwen (talk) 17:44, 18 January 2009 (UTC)
Thanks a lot then, it may also solve other little issues about image switch during review phase. About promoted image renaming, I just hope it will not happen again, since the subpage parameter was only the emerged part of the iceberg... --Eusebius (talk) 17:55, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

Wie versprochen: Job zu vergeben![edit]

(Honorar wie üblich ;). Guten Morgen,

--Dschwen (talk) 22:47, 21 December 2008 (UTC)

Valued images by scope[edit]

Hi Daniel, it's me again ("Oh, no..."). I've noticed that there are 191 VIs referenced in Commons:Valued images by scope, but 421 promoted VIs in Category:Promoted valued image candidates. It's no big deal, it does not prevent the project for running, but is there a known reason for that? I couldn't figure out by myself a logical "selection pattern" that would explain that. --Eusebius (talk) 12:53, 21 December 2008 (UTC)

Crap! How is that possible!? Do you have an example for one that was recently promoted and did not show up in the by scope list? --Dschwen (talk) 22:41, 21 December 2008 (UTC)
The most recently promoted among the absent ones should be this one. --Eusebius (talk) 22:54, 21 December 2008 (UTC)
So apparently, VIs are added there only when not added to Commons:Valued image candidates/tag galleries. Consistent with what you said somewhere else in your talk page, but not very handful. I've been playing with pywikipedia and I now have a script able to rebuild the list from scratch, but it would be nicer to have them added one by one by VICbot :-) The full list is quite long, I think it will be soon needed to think about another organization (transclusion of shorter pages, per letter?). --Eusebius (talk) 12:29, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

Mutter erde[edit]

I know this is probably canvassing, but I wanted to relate my feelings on this matter, and why he should be banned for the year at least, if not longer.

First off, as we know, ME is banned indefinitely from both the English and the German wikipedias for his incivility. Now, I know we don't usually care what en does, and we try not to judge people by their actions away from Commons, but when not one but TWO projects ban him for the same thing, that is something we should take notice of. I am in no doubt that both en and de instituted RfCs, numerous discussions and the like, and at the end of it all, ME is here and doing the same thing he was doing there. He has been warned about his behaviour multiple times before, and has shown no willingness to change. Even through this whole process he has been utterly unrepentant and hostile to everyone who disagrees with him. It wouldn't matter if we banned him for five minutes or five months, he doesn't understand that his threatening behaviour is not acceptable here, nor any other project, and he never will. If we ban him for any length of time short of indefinitely, he will come back with the same attitude, and we will have the same discussions AGAIN, with the same people saying that the good outweighs the bad.

I believe in second chances. But I don't believe we should just give chance after chance. ME has had numerous chances over several projects to change his behaviour, and it has come to nought. It's time we finally just banned him for good.

Thanks for listening. -mattbuck (Talk) 00:28, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

--Dschwen (talk) 16:32, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

Multilingualomania[edit]

In einem Anfall habe ich soeben {{Self-portrait}} gebastelt, weil mich in einem konkreten Fall der patzige Eintrag {{Creator:Vincent van Gogh}}

Hi, I'm aware that Christmas greetings are more-or-less to be considered to be SPAM, but I can't help:
Here is one more, which is from me.
Although I might have [and might in the future] disagree with you, I'd like to ascertain you that I respect and love you. Believe it or not. [w.] 16:17, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

Thank you![edit]

Hi Dschwen, I'd like to thank you for correcting my spelling! It is interesting that few days ago, when I was editing Commons from the same computer, all misspelled words were underline with red. I'm not sure how it came about and why it is here no more, but I really liked it.--Mbz1 (talk) 18:00, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

Consider it my special christmas present ;-). Konqueror and Firefox (at least from 3.0 on) should highlight spelling mistakes. For FF2 there might be an extension (but I'd rather upgrade to FF3). --Dschwen (talk) 18:32, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

Hi Dschwen/Archive9. I would like to thank you for the interest you have shown in my request for adminship, and for the time you have taken to review my profile. As a Christmas present I've just been given the admin tools, for which I'm thankful as well. I have understood all the remarks that have been made during the review period. Panoramic of Albuquerque[edit]

Sorry, meant to leave a comment.

I think it'd be a good idea to keep expanding the list of "versions" per year. That way the images would be easier to find for readers. It'll not only show the progression of time, but also improving camera technology regardless of the photographer. I plan on getting another camera (mine broke :/) some time this year, so I'll be adding a 2009 version, probably some time in late summer.

Re: your comment on the page. The photo isn't a panorama. The original photo had some work done to it. Bidgee (talk) 09:49, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

I know it is not a panorama. Oh, you think I thought that because I suggested using hugin? Hehe, I frequently use hugin on single frames to correct the perspective distortion and lens errors. You'll have to apply vertical guides to the image and optimize it. There is a tutorial on perspective correction on the hugin site. --Dschwen (talk) 16:11, 3 January 2009 (UTC)
Tried hugin but it just crashes in Vista. :( Bidgee (talk) 13:40, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
Did you download a new version from hugin.sf.net? It seems unlikely, that a program that is used by hundreds of people just crashes. Nah, well, I guess I cannot help you, I don't have vista (although I recently installed it on a friends computer and it worked flawlessly with vista). --Dschwen (talk) 14:20, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

Template:QICtotal[edit]

Hallo Dschwen. --Leyo 22:21, 7 January 2009 (UTC)

Aeehhh... na ja, prinzipiell hast Du recht, aber das waere a) redundant zur Farbaenderung der Nominationsbox, und b) komplizierter als wegen a) noetig ;-). KISS-Prinzip. --Dschwen (talk) 22:27, 7 January 2009 (UTC)
--Leyo 00:14, 8 January 2009 (UTC)
No, no! This is wrong, the QICtotal box now shows a "result" while the nomination is still being discussed. There should only be a result when the discussion is closed, and closure is not after a set time, but when discussion is finished - no sooner than 48 hours after the last comment.
In the original manual implimentation of this running total, the "promote"/"decline"/"more votes?" in "()" brackets was a comment and each was followed by a "?" (ie "promote?", "decline?", "more votes?"). When the nomination was closed "Running total" was changed to "Result", and the "promote"/"decline" was made bold and the brackets and "?" were removed.
To simplify things to aid automation, I would suggest just leaving it as "running total" even when archived - changing it is redundant as the promotion/decline is indicated by the QIC template used (and its colour). --Tony Wills (talk) 09:07, 8 January 2009 (UTC)

Placing of Location template in Image[edit]

Would it be possible to amend Dschwenbot to place the Location template after the Information template, assuming the Image has one. I think putting the location in front of the image caption is too intrusive. If there is no Information template, then just continue as at present.

As an example see File:Starcross railway station 1.JPG, as amended by Dschwenbot, and as further amended by myself.

Thanks. -- Chris j wood (talk) 16:46, 8 January 2009 (UTC)

It would be possible, but would require substantially more effort. I'd essentially have to parse the wikimarkup, counting opened and closed templates to determine the end of the Information template. Finding the beginning of the Information template is much easier, I just have to find a single string. Now I am currently working on a more intelligent template parameter extraction routine, and as a side-effect I would be able to get end-of-template positions, which I could use in the dschwenbot. Don't hold your breath though ;-). --Dschwen (talk) 18:36, 8 January 2009 (UTC)
Fair enough, but the manually effort in finding and reordering all images edited by your bot is also substantial. You should also be aware that as a result of a consensus developed there, the project page Commons:Geocoding now states that if an image has a {{Information}} template, the {{Location}} template should follow it. -- Chris j wood (talk) 15:52, 23 January 2009 (UTC)
I would not call this a consensus I'd call it utter lack of interest. I told you that I will change the bot when I get to it. If you feel that you need to change every page my bot has edited, well that's your choice. But please don't come here to pressure me with a guideline you just changed. Because then I might just as well redirect you to COM:BLOCK to post a block request for my bot. --Dschwen (talk) 16:24, 23 January 2009 (UTC)
Three in favour (myself, Sv1xv and ClemRutter), one abstaining (how I read your response) and no objections, after 15 days grace, is a consensus in my books. Otherwise I would not have gone ahead and changed the guideline. Sorry you felt so heated about it, but I stand by my change. I've no inclination to go thermo-nuclear by blocking your bot, but I look forward to your improvements. -- Chris j wood (talk) 14:52, 24 February 2009 (UTC)

Nochmal was[edit]

Hallo Dschwen.

--Dschwen (talk) 16:20, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

Sure! Tomas, you have a really nice portfolio on photo.net. I wonder how you approach people for portrait shots. Any tips? :-) --Dschwen (talk) 19:29, 12 January 2009 (UTC)
Uff! Where do you want to start? I'd be glad to give you tips.... everything is very situational. It can range from close up intimate portraits to on-the-fly portraits. In anycase, you have to read the situation. In close up photos, setting the mood and the communication between photographer and subject is important. In situational opportunities, two things are very, very important, to set real fast rappor with the subjects, making conversation about them, not about oneself, and the other is to become as invisible as possible, becoming part of the scene. Ask me specifically what portrait you liked and I will tell you its story. Or if you have something in mind, tell me how you see it and will offer insights. Photography is all about sharing really. Just about everything I know was taught to me, or what was taught to me helped me develop new things, which in turn one must pass on. --Tomascastelazo (talk) 06:53, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

It does appear now. Rebooting has nothing to do with it. In this case it was the parser cache in the Commons webserver. I cleared it, forcing a re-render of the page. Everything is fine now. --Dschwen (talk) 14:43, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

geocoding NASA images.

Hi Dschwen. You seem to be quite the geocoding whiz. I was thinking that it might be relatively easy, and useful to retrieve coordinate information for all images downloaded from Image Science and Analysis Laboratory, NASA-Johnson Space Center. "The Gateway to Astronaut Photography of Earth.". We have many pictures that are sourced to this website, and they almost always have known orientation and coordinates. I figure that it should be possible to put a bot on this. Is this feasible and desired ? TheDJ (talk) 20:13, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

Mh. I'm indifferent about this. Our current heading system isn't designed for steep upward or downward angles. And I don't really want to clutter the MiniAtlas with gazillions of NASA images (which would overshadow our user-generated content). NASA supplies kml files for viewing the images in GoogleEarth, which I think is the most suitable way of viewing them (as GE gives you an impression of the altitude as well). It would be better to add a direct link to the KML to the NASA-template. --Dschwen (talk) 16:25, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

Photo license request

Dear Daniel,

Here at the American Printing House for the Blind, a not-for-profit agency, it is our mission to provide educational materials for students with visual impairments and blindness. We are currently developing an atlas for students with partial sight. In the product we need a photo of a Swiss dairy cow. We found one at Wikipedia that belongs to you.

We noticed that you are the owner of the original image and are now seeking permission from you to use the image in our atlas, Address: Earth. We know you have released it under the Creative Commons license, but our standards require us to have specific permission from you. We like your image because it has the high contrast and clarity needed by students with visual impairments, and it's beautiful as well.

We are asking you to donate a license for this photo for the life of the atlas (5-10 years) or accept a small donation for it. I promise you our students will receive much educational value from your photo. We will, of course give proper attribution to you and print an URL of your choice in close proximity to the photo.

Please consider our request and get back with me when you have determined your answer.

Thank you very much for your consideration,

Elaine Kitchel Research Scientist American Printing House for the Blind 1839 Frankfort Ave. Louisville, KY 40206 (800) 223-1839 ext: 313

After seeing your comments on the FP promotion of this image [15], I thought you might like to know that it appears to have been based on an outline diagram from a USDA publication. I came across this scanned diagram [16] credited to the USDA. I have asked the author of Wasp_morphology.jpg about the source, it will be interesting to see his reply as he claimed it all as his own work :-) [Also he has introduced a errors by omitting the actual Ocelli from the diagram (the label looks as though it is just pointing to the forehead) and describing the "vertex" as the back of the head rather than the top.] --Tony Wills (talk) 10:38, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

Yes, that's my post, and you can copy whatever you like. Do you want details, like actual azimuth and distance to each object? I didn't bother identifying foreground buildings (figuring the guys at that forum didn't need that) but we can do that too. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Timz (talk • contribs) Dschwen (talk) 20:52, 19 February 2009 (UTC) (UTC)

I already spent considerable time to clean up the mess you made. My time is too precious to waste. Sorry. --Dschwen (talk) 03:02, 6 March 2009 (UTC)
The irony is you have re-liscenced a bunch (at least 50) images. Eg (http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File%3AFlower_1383_2.jpg&diff=18940888&oldid=18934418). You can absolutely not relicense images. Noodle snacks (talk) 08:09, 12 March 2009 (UTC)
As you can see here Idid not change the license at all. --Dschwen (talk) 11:37, 12 March 2009 (UTC)
In reliscencing the image was released under GDFL-1.2, previously being CC-BY-SA only. A revert "reliscences" the image back to CC-BY-SA, when it should be CC-BY-SA|GDFL-1.2 (since it is released under both). I don't know if you have a bot available or similar. Noodle snacks (talk) 09:47, 17 March 2009 (UTC)
  • My image pages are cluttered with you and Abigor replacing my customized templates with all the code. I have created a plain GFDL and a GFDL 1-2 only here and here respectively and I expect the mess to be cleared. Come on, my own template protected from me editing it? If time was precious you wouldn't have made the mess in the first place. --Muhammad 07:22, 12 March 2009 (UTC)
    • You should not have used these templates in the first place. Sorry you had to learn this the hard way. Btw. I tried fixing the messy markup. --Dschwen (talk) 11:37, 12 March 2009 (UTC)
      • Mh nyeah anyways. Let me see if I have time to run a bot to clear things up. --Dschwen (talk) 11:39, 12 March 2009 (UTC)
        • Thanks. Sorry if I was rude, just frustrated :( --Muhammad 15:09, 12 March 2009 (UTC)
  • Which reminds me: going from GFDL 1.2 or later to GFDL 1.2 only is not really OK, is it? --Slaunger (talk) 18:24, 12 March 2009 (UTC)
No it's not ! --MichaelMaggs (talk) 18:31, 12 March 2009 (UTC)
And that is precisely why there has been quite a build-up of frustration on my side, too. And Fir is even an admin here! I thought we require basic understanding of licensing technicalities. Maybe snapping good pictures is accepted as a substitute. The most annoying thing is that people take him as a role model, not only in his good attributes (excellent photography) but also in his bad ones (only uploading downsampled trial-versions of his pictures, retraction of licenses) --Dschwen (talk) 18:45, 12 March 2009 (UTC)
I have previously tried to make FIR subt his license template, but i did not suceed in that, and now I have asked him to consider the GFDL license change. I am thinking if I should raise the issue on COM:AN, but maybe he should a little more time to address my comment. --Slaunger (talk) 18:51, 12 March 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, I'd appreciate if someone would put this on COM:AN. I don't want to that person right now. The whole NC story on en.wp has me so p***ed-off that I could not stay level-headed. Besides I howcheng mentioned it in the section about Muhammad's license change. My guess is nobody wants to throw the first stone because Wikipedia might be doomed without his pretty pictures... --Dschwen (talk) 18:56, 12 March 2009 (UTC)

--Dschwen (talk) 22:25, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

Please Geocode me

My new camera geocoded my pictures including File:173-176 Perry St jeh.JPG which I uploaded days ago. It hasn't got its automated geocode template yet. Must I do something else to make it happen? Jim.henderson (talk) 18:29, 9 March 2009 (UTC)

It doesn't appear to have a lat/long in the metadata, just "north" and "west". -mattbuck (Talk) 18:44, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
When I open it in Picasa and ask it to show me on a map, Google Earth locates the camera correctly on the Hudson River waterfront. Is there some sort of incompatibility between my camera and the Wiki software? Jim.henderson (talk) 18:52, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
The data is all there, but only in the original file. The built-in EXIF extraction by Mediawiki is broken (GPS data shows up incomplete). I had to tweak my bot a bit to make it notice your images. It is running now and should catch up with your uploads any time. --Dschwen (talk) 20:00, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
Thank you; I see your bot has indeed transcoded the pix I made in the previous half hour, and one from a couple days earlier. I feared I had bought a buggy Nikon P6000, and hope the Mediawiki extractor can be repaired almost as quickly as you fixed your bot to work around the problem. Additional pix with Geocode already in EXIF are sure to arrive as word gets out in Wikiworld that a not terribly expensive camera can eliminate almost all the effort at the photographer's end. Deprecating GFDL 1.2-only on en.wiki

Thought you might be interested in this discussion going on at en.wiki about deprecating the use of GFDL 1.2-only licensing tags there. Kaldari (talk) 16:46, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

Thanks, I am. Fascinating how polarizing this license is and how different the motives for using it can be. --Dschwen (talk) 16:53, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

Geocoding Bot

--Kolossos (talk) 16:04, 12 March 2009 (UTC)

User:Botev/license

Thanks. I have moved and automatized my template. Now everybody can also add image descriptions in additional languages. --Botev (talk) 07:03, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

Mh, you really should not pack everything into that license template. Why don't you use {{Information}} on your image pages like everyone else? You make it harder for both the editors and the data extractors, which both have to learn a new template just for one user. --Dschwen (talk) 12:35, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

Getting started with my own bot using pywikipedia

Hi Daniel,

I have been programming in Python over the last couple of months (or rather in SciPy), and I am interested in making my own bot using pywikipedia. As a startup project I was thinking of adding missing and correcting wrong subpage links to nominations of FPs in the {{Assessments}} template, and perhaps in the future, cf. Template talk:Assessments let my bot replace the existing Assessment template with a new template, based on consensus and with more meaningful parameter names and values. To get started I would like to just experiment, reading pages from Commons to see if I can extract the information I need to add missing subpages. Now, it is a little unclear for me what to do to get started concerning a user account. Surely I would not need a bot flag in the beginning and not at all for just reading information, but do I just start out by creating a new account, say SlaungerBot and then use that account for letting the bot read information, or can I use my existing account as long as I am only using the bot to read content? --Slaunger (talk) 23:21, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

If your bot is read only I'd suggest using your existing account. Then again, it doesn't really matter, if sooner or later you will eventaully create User:SlaungerBot, you mght as well do it now. --Dschwen (talk) 23:31, 14 March 2009 (UTC) P.S.: Let me know if I can help you in any way. --Dschwen (talk) 23:32, 14 March 2009 (UTC)
Thanks Daniel! I plan to just let it run on my local machine, or are there better places, like the tool server, which gives better access to data?
The toolserver only gives you better access to data when you need to use the databases directly, which pywikipedia does not do. Although it can make your bots run more efficiently. Applying for an account is a lengthy process (there is quite a backlog of accounts to be approved currently). It will certainly help to have a running working bot to present when making that account application. --Dschwen (talk) 02:17, 15 March 2009 (UTC)
Thanks Daniel, for explaining that. One last question, I normally use SVN for version control, and I like using it. Are you familiar with SVN respositories out there which endorse putting this type of Python code in? Alternatively, I have thought of simply making a source subpage under the bot user page, and then update that from time to time - then the source is in the immediate vicinity of where it is used. --Slaunger (talk) 21:21, 15 March 2009 (UTC)
How about Google Code? I'm really bad with SVN. I constantly remind myself to start using it consistently... --Dschwen (talk) 23:17, 15 March 2009 (UTC)
On the glorious day of March 16, 2009, SlaungerBot was born with the ability to read its own page assisted by the midwife Dschwen. Birth was unexpectedly easy and fast, now the bot only had to learn how to write...--SlaungerBot (talk) 23:20, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
Darn, I forgot to logout from the bot account. Classic mistake. ;-) BTW, how is it? One does not have to be an admin to operate a bot without a bot flag, right? --Slaunger (talk) 23:23, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
Uhm, nobody should operate a bot without a bot flag. I guess for testing it is ok, otherwise it would be a chicken vs. egg problem, as you should demonstrate your bot is working to get the account. I used userspace subpages when I first developed QICbot. Just copy some pages you want the bot to work on into your userspace. Writing is super-easy by the way. Just issue a page.put(text) command :-) --Dschwen (talk) 23:28, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
Huh, as I understood according to Commons:Bots#Bot flag it is OK to run witout one in the beginning, such that other users easily can see and check its operations and build up trust. Perhaps that is not the actual practise? Yes, I noticed how absolutely amazingly simple it is to get started - it seems like a mature and well documented package. --Slaunger (talk) 23:35, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Hi Daniel, Hi Kim (welcome back), sorry to interfere. Just for us not to do the same job several times: I plan to have my bot take care of the VI categorization (unless one of you tells me something's on its way already). And BTW, the backlog in the toolserver account requests is being taken care of, I've got my account a few days ago. --Eusebius (talk) 08:51, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Hi Eusebius. Do continue your planned VI categorization work. I had some other tasks in mind for my bot. Cheers, --Slaunger (talk) 10:24, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Please reply with an offer of what it would cost to get full, non-exlusive and non-attributing rights to this image.

Bug macro FPC

I think you can come back. Richard and I have given up bugs, and Dschwen the panos. Things may start to be fun again, all we have to do is learn how to appreciate vintage pics ;-) Alvesgaspar (talk) 23:01, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

He he. Now that I think of it, I could write a small bit of Javascript that just hides all nominations by certain people. Unfortunately the FPC page would get rather short that way ;-). --Dschwen (talk) 23:12, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
Or replace boring nominations with something like this? Alvesgaspar (talk) 23:21, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Restorationists

It was something of an unpleasant surprise to discover this morning that you had edited my own user space without notifying me. If you don't wish to participate in a project then of course you don't need to, but please don't change its name over the objections of the people who are actually active there. Durova (talk) 17:18, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

Uh oh, looking at my watchlist and seeing a 444 character posting by you on my talk page I already figured that it must be something different than a mere thank you. In any case you are still welcome. Orthography is not a matter of opinion, especially when it concerns a project that is meant to be visible. I find it a bit sad that you feel the need to dismiss my honest attempt at improving commons in light of our recent run-ins. --Dschwen (talk) 17:42, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
I undid you here, as it looked like a mistake. Was it intentional? PeterSymonds (talk) 19:56, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
Rolled back. The answer to whether that was a mistake can easily be obtained by consulting a dictionary. Which is something the people who set up that project should have done beforehand. I'm a bit puzzled by this resistance toward correct spelling. Do you really believe this is about en:Restorationism rather than restorers?! --Dschwen (talk) 20:01, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
May I ask you to stick to using rollback for clear cases of vandalism, as the policy dictates, please? I ask because it does look like a mistake when an administrator is rolling back another administrator, with the rollback links in many more places. It creates confusion and is rather unnecessary. Thanks, PeterSymonds (talk) 20:15, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
I am shocked by this farce! The term restorationist is bogus. This is a completely clear cut case! Full stop. Only the huge egos of some of the people involved makes correcting this error a drama. Yeah, that happy clappy consensus talk sounds really grand. "Let's discuss it." Discuss what?! Should we discuss orthographic errors on Wikipedia, too, before fixing them? --Dschwen (talk) 21:02, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

Following up from posts of a few days ago, and in retrospect rather glad to have deprioritized them. You might want to look into the reasons CarolSpears was sitebanned from en:wiki. Having a large edit count would not be a good thing at all if the problem has carried over here. It was a long time before anyone checked it out properly over there, and the cleanup required a team of people. Durova (talk) 23:02, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

Hey Durova. I will look into it for the sake of a fair argument. My only "stake" in this is that I frankly like Carol, her work here, and interaction with her. But I guess not everybody shares these sentiments. Have you given the restorationist vs. restorer issue some thought? I had a discussion with Gerard (which he took off-wiki as it was getting slightly heated... ;-) ). He seemed to have his reasons for coining a new word, and he mentioned that you had a discussion about the choice of the title. Could you point me in the right direction? --Dschwen (talk) 23:32, 22 March 2009 (UTC)
The difference between being serious about checking edits for accuracy and harassment is that checking all edits daily for accuracy and imaginary copyright violations would have an end product of accuracy. Checking one users edits for accuracy has an end product of the harassment of one user.
It should not be such a challenge for people who have requested and have been given a break to find an existing word to use to describe themselves in an environment which caters to the less-intellectually hindered.... -- carol (talk) 01:49, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

To put it in a nutshell, I handled her with kid gloves for half a year on the assumption that she was so active, she must be doing good for the site. Then it turned out she was a habitual copyright violator and plagiarist. We ran dispute resolution without making any progress at all. The final siteban discussion was unanimous.[17] CarolSpears also has the unusual distinction at en:wiki for having inspired a policy change, not by directly editing the policy but by demonstrating empirically that the policy was in need of amendment. See Wikipedia:Copyright_violations: In extreme cases administrators may impose special conditions before unblocking, such as requiring assistance with cleanup by disclosing which sources were used. Durova (talk) 04:25, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

In a mustard seed husk: what is/are "kid gloves"? -- carol (talk) 16:07, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
In a pea pod they are gloves made from very soft leather eg from a baby goat or sheep, suitable for an archivist or restorationist perhaps ;-) [18] :-) --Tony Wills (talk) 19:33, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
What, nobody is suggesting Durova skins little children to make her gloves? ;-P --Dschwen (talk) 21:04, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
Regarding the different issue of the title change, that's a much smaller matter. Mainly I was caught off guard to see someone else editing my user space without informing me. Things have been tense lately and, although it might not have been fair to think this, what went through my mind was Oh goodness, not another trick to marginalize this endeavor by someone who has no interest in helping it? Bear in mind this was shortly after I had opened a thread at FPC talk to discuss such things, and other than Carol's sarcasm no response from the community had been forthcoming. Discuss things reasonably and you'll find I'm a reasonable person. :) Best regards, Durova (talk) 04:34, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
Hm, yeah, once things get to heated rational discourse becomes more and more difficult. You are right, I have no interest in helping it, restorations are not my business and I have plenty other projects here that tie up my time. However neither do I have an interest in sabotaging your endeavor. The irony is that the opposite renaming (restorers->restorationist) would have been a marginalization in my book. After all, according to the dictionaries I consulted the former term describes what you set out to do, while the later term has no connection to it whatsoever (a fact that unfortunately seems to stay largely unnoticed by the masses of non-native English speakers on commons). I'd like to think of myself as being able to separate my personal opinions from simple maintenance tasks. And I can assure you that the rename was performed in good faith. But I can understand that with the controversy around MOR and featuring restorations in general you are extra suspicious of any actions taken in this area. Anyhow, I don't want to go around Gerard's back here, as he made quite an effort to justify the name post hoc. As I mentioned above he alluded to a consensus in the restorator-community about the naming of the project and made it sound as if his explanations were discussed and agreed upon by the members. Is this really a silent consensus or could you point me to that discussion? --Dschwen (talk) 13:44, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
As far as I'm aware there never was an onsite discussion. It's a comedy of errors there, although well-meaning. Mainly I was of the opinion that it would be better to wait until there were more than just two people, then heard it was already running. Hadn't been around when the photographers and illustrators pages went up, so wasn't aware of the mechanisms that got them going. In retrospect, really should have asked more questions before adding my name to it. Regarding the difficulty of communication in a tense atmosphere, one really cogent point came across only overnight: what's the distinction between 'meet our restorers' and 'meet our uploaders'? Once the cart slows down and the horse catches up, I really hope this episode doesn't become a barrier to starting a similar page once we're ready for it. Durova (talk) 17:48, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

Re: More unwanted advice ;-)

I might do that, ~75% of the time I use Commons:Tools/Commonist (particularly when I have more than one file to upload at once), though. Noodle snacks (talk) 00:18, 21 March 2009 (UTC)

GFDL-1.2 only warning

Hey Daniel, I understand you adding the warning notice to my images. The images however, are used in many different wiki projects and adding such a template is degradation IMO. So far I have seen the template in my image pages alone. I request the removal of the warning. --Muhammad 07:13, 21 March 2009 (UTC)

Muhammad, there currently is a discussion involving your Tachinidae pic on de.WP. I'd ask you to leave the text for a few more days. I won't be adding it to any further images. It might get added to the license template though. I'm not targeting [19] you specifically, but your images are "unfortunately" of high quality and come up for use more often (which is why it is a shame they might not be available for the German Wikipedia). And you should have noticed that I added only one of these templates so far (the one you removed already on the buttefly image was added by a different user). --Dschwen (talk) 11:20, 21 March 2009 (UTC)
Fair enough. Thanks for clarifying. I had a look at the comments at de.wiki FPC about the tachinid. Pretty harsh, eh ;) --Muhammad 17:06, 21 March 2009 (UTC)
Mh yeah, two reasons for that a) the bar is very high due to the "flood" of high quality macros, b) if you are already a good photographer people expect even more of you (yeah, kinda unfair). --Dschwen (talk) 22:19, 21 March 2009 (UTC)

Annoying VICbot issue

Hi there. VICbot keeps removing one of the candidates of an MVR, although it is not closed: [20], [21], [22], [23]. I don't know why, but I guess it is related to the fact that the same picture was involved in another nomination (with a very close name) recently closed. --Eusebius (talk) 12:31, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

D'Oh! Yes, it matches part of the filename as well (it sees Tomar_December_2008-4.jpg is contained in Tomar_December_2008-4.jpg_(2) and removes it). I could change the matching code, and I should (or you should as soon ast the stable server project gets approved :-) ). The issue is going to go away by itself, when the closing of the old candidate is sufficiently far in the past (3 days, but this can be changed to 1 or 2, as the bot is running twice a day). --Dschwen (talk) 14:47, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
OK, let's just wait then. I'm curious about the methods you use, I look forward to gaining access to your code (that's not a criticism, on what my bot does, it looks way slowlier than yours, I guess I should forget about pywikipedia for most of the querying stuff and rely directly on SQL). --Eusebius (talk) 15:41, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for it.I will try it.Yousaf465 (talk)

Request for File:NYC Top of the Rock Pano.jpg[edit]

Hello Daniel,

I really like your panoramic picture taken from the "Top of the Rock" and I would like to print it out as a poster. Do you have a higher resolution version and would you agree to release it?

Thank you very much for sharing your superb pictures!

Clément

Clément, I usually upload all my pictures at full resolution. This one is quite old and was shot with my old Powershot G3. I'm afraid this is all the resolution I got. It should look good up to a height of maybe 30cm. --Dschwen (talk) 21:32, 9 April 2009 (UTC)
In fact I would like to print it out as large as 52x150 cm with some white borders (I already own the frame...). I think I found one of the original picture on photos.schwen.de (img_2020) and it has a greater resolution. Did you keep the original pictures you used to assemble the panorama ? Sorry to bother you but I would really like to use your art. Thank you.

revoking GFDL licenses[edit]

At the administrator's noticeboard you mentioned that using unsubsted user licensing templates is against policy. Can you please point me to the policy which says that so that I can bring it to other editors' attention. Also, you may want to weigh in on the proposal here to explicitly prohibit revoking licenses on Commons. Kaldari (talk) 18:34, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

Sure it is well hiden: Commons:User-specific_galleries,_templates_and_categories_policy#Regarding_licenses. This wiki-lawyering really annoys the living crap out of me. I appreciate your effort to clarify the situation, but the licenses should be clear on their own. Well, at least in an ideal world I guess. Aren't you happy that Fir is now pursuing a law degree. Geez, way to be a shing example Mr. Administrator ;-). --Dschwen (talk) 20:05, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

File:Chacaltaya Pano MC.jpg[edit]

Danke, Christian --Chmehl (talk) 21:11, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

Who does the KML scraping for en:Wikipedia?[edit]

I figured you might know who generates the KML layers for google earth? Or does google do the extraction themselves? -J JMesserly (talk) 23:28, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

Is that what you're looking for? Commons:Geocoding/Overlay --Eusebius (talk) 06:59, 17 April 2009 (UTC)
I think google does it on their own. user:para has a nice layer of commopns images. --Dschwen (talk) 03:26, 19 April 2009 (UTC)

Slideshow[edit]

Kolossos (talk) 17:41, 19 April 2009 (UTC)

--Kolossos (talk) 17:59, 19 April 2009 (UTC)
