Picture of the Year voting round 1 open[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Please also add Babel templates on your user page and your information onto variant of Commons:List of administrators. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 01:25, 30 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Smetanovo nábřeží93.jpg[edit]

@ Esprit,

I admit that my first desired new name looked very complicated. My new wish does not look as complicated.

And there are problems to make links to that file from outside. (with those automatical creations of combinations like "%93" as transcriptions of special characters)

I think, that is comprehendible quite simply.

Hi,
I see it has been done, I'm glad you could find an acceptable name. Reagrds, Esprit Fugace (talk) 19:12, 28 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Important message for file movers[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

File:Hooley.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Filemove[edit]

Concerning this edit: You accepted as valid Rachimbourg’s claim that their preferred filename (which contains two gross typos and reflects a crude misunderstanding of election results vis-à-vis parliamentary apportionment) further contributes to «harmonizing names of file set». However, Category:Portuguese parliament seat diagrams shows no such thing: Considering only those diagrams created with Parliament diagram tool (which Rachimbourg used, directly or indirectly, but still claims own work…), one can see at least three different naming schemes — all of them less than optimal. (Rachimbourg’s additional argument, «uploader's request», is irrelevant for a 4-year old file and might be seen as COM:OWN.)

My own renaming of this file as File:I Parliament of Portugal (1976apr).svg, which you undid, meant to clarify the difference between this consist and the one shown in File:I Parliament of Portugal (1979jul).svg — Rachimbourg’s preferred filename scheme doesn’t lend itself to such clarification, or else I would have not undertake the move myself in the first place. I therefore consider that your action was not guided by the best interests of Commons nor of the reuser community (namely in pt.wp).

-- Tuválkin 14:10, 10 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Tuvalkin: Your renaming broke a pattern, established by the first uploader, that was valid for 16 files (15 of which he uploaded at the same time), from 1975 to 2019. If you wish to change a name, you should change all 16 names, not break pattern. I acknowledge that pt.wp has a greater vested interest in those files, but Rachimbourg is the uploader, and he did them intending to use them on fr.wp. The reuser community is not just pt.wp. "Uploader's request" was my own addition, not Rachimbourg's claim, explaining why I did that specific renaming (I saw his request on fr.wp). Commons' policy explicitly states: "Unless there is a compelling reason not to, uploader requests should be honored." Also, I was further inclined to agree with Rachimbourg, considering that you changed the color scheme of the file, breaking (again) pattern with the rest of his uploads. If you wished for another file, under another name, why didn't you upload your new file under the new name ? Such a new file would be a more than acceptable form of duplicate, differing presentations can be useful for differing uses. You have another easy solution to correct what you perceive as a gross mistake on pt.wp, one that respects both your wish (a corrected file under a correct name) and the naming scheme used on fr.wp. Regards, Esprit Fugace (talk) 17:05, 10 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Well, damn, you really like to be wrong and insist on it, don’t you? Your fr.wp cronyism matters more to you than accuracy and reusability, it seems. Look, it was (partly) out of respect for your rude pal Rachimbourg’s work that I chose to build up on his files and tried to salvage them. For his colors are off (yellow PSD?!; blue AD and FàP(not his doing) green PRD?!), his sort order is wrong (CDS between PS and PSD?!), and his Portuguese spelling is atrocious. But since you two wanna buddy up and play the COM:OWN game with this set of files, be it: I’ll create a whole set anew, properly credited and sourced to be usable by any serious project (apparently not fr.wp), and then will tag the remaining garbage with {{Disputed diagram}} — maybe that will make you guys happy. -- Tuválkin 17:19, 10 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It will, thank you for your kindness. Esprit Fugace (talk) 17:23, 10 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
