Districts[edit]

Hi. I notice you created a "Category:Warehouse District" for a neighbohood of Cleveland, Ohio. Might I suggest moving it to something like "Warehouse District, Cleveland"? I know New Orleans also has a section called the "Warehouse District", and I wouldn't be surprised if there were others as well, so a more specific title might avoid possible confusion in the long run. Cheers, -- Infrogmation 03:57, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

That probably would be a good idea. Please feel free to move it if you like. The w:Warehouse District article is a pseudo-disambiguation page. Perhaps we should create something like that here. - EurekaLott 04:17, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
I moved it. Cheers, -- Infrogmation 22:13, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

Lorain-Carnegie Bridge photo[edit]

Thanks for letting me know that you posted a message on one of the HABS/HAER photos I uploaded recently. I noticed that there was already a version of the photo, but as you indicate, I brightened it up a bit and did some color enhancement. However, I'm afraid that I don't know how to replace a photo here. Can you give me some guidance? --Sanfranman59 05:51, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

OK, thanks for the tip. I'm relatively new to Commons and am still on the learning curve. I'll upload my photo so that it replaces yours and then propose for deletion the one I uploaded a couple of weeks ago. Sorry for any confusion. --Sanfranman59 18:34, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

Canalmap.png[edit]

Image was "quick-delete" flagged without any (administrator) comment or reason posted, which I believe is against policy?

I posted the appropriate discussion comments which I believe I the Message box said to do?

I posted a Discussion/Talk comments to which noone (administrator) has responded.

  • An Ohio canalmap is needed for several Ohio canal-related articles,
  • and this posted one seems to have the closest to the public-domain license Wiki is looking for?

"Bone Yard" in Cleveland[edit]

More Cleveland[edit]

  • St. Maron's: I copy/pasted the description from the picture of Zion Lutheran; that's why the Lutheran category was there, as I definitely know that Maronites aren't Lutheran :-)
  • The Cleveland list of NRHP sites shows that the official name for the Baker building is "Baker Motor Vehicle Company Building". I had an impression from the article that this was the factory: was it located next door or something?

Thanks for your help! Nyttend (talk) 00:09, 26 December 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for clarifying what you meant with the old Baker property; I had thought you believed that the official NRHP name was "Baker Electric Building". Now that I understand my error, I've put it back to how you had it. As being listed on the NRHP is a major part of the building's significance, it's important to have the NRHP designation included, but it's easy to do that by noting it elsewhere in the description. Nyttend (talk) 23:36, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

J. Milton Dyer[edit]

Ok, I'll bite ... [1] ... who is w:J. Milton Dyer ??? I am guessing he designed that library?? Funded it? Maybe you should enhance the category page Category:J. Milton Dyer to give a little info? That's typically what I do. Cheers. ++Lar: t/c 18:44, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

Yes, Dyer was its architect. I usually add a brief description when creating categories, but for some reason I neglected to do so this time. I corrected the oversight. Obviously, he doesn't yet have a Wikipedia entry, but you can read a little about him in the Encyclopedia of Cleveland History. The Cleveland Landmarks Commission has an extensive list of his commissions. - EurekaLott (talk) 19:03, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

I just saw you tagged the image above for deletion and I reverted you. Therefore it's allowed on Commons even with some restrictions. For further information see Image_casebook Trademarks. Mizunoryu (talk) 02:51, 28 May 2010 (UTC)

Cleveland neighborhoods[edit]

Hi there. I happened to notice your revert. I think it's odd that all the subcategories of Category:Cleveland, Ohio omit the "Ohio" when the parent category uses it. That doesn't make much sense and I think it's different from Commons practice. Leaving that aside, the main purpose of my edit was to eliminate the "of" convention and standardize all neighborhood categories as "Neighborhoods in X." It's not clear to me from your edit what your view was on that, or whether you even realized that had changed as well. Best, Mackensen (talk) 04:52, 14 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi. It's not unusual for Commons categories for U.S. cities to include the state name but omit it in their subcategories. Off the top of my head, the categories for San Francisco, Indianapolis, and Philadelphia are similar examples. I don't have a strong opinion on the in/of naming convention. It's best to be consistent when possible, but both forms are common in Category:Neighborhoods by city, even after your renames. - Eureka Lott 05:20, 14 October 2012 (UTC)
Fair enough, it just seems inconsistent. I don't have a strong view on in vs of either, except that it really ought to be consistent (and I thought I'd deal with the US first). I'll propose a rename along those lines. Thanks, Mackensen (talk) 14:07, 14 October 2012 (UTC)

Construction date of Oxford Female Institute (Fisher Hall)[edit]

Hi ... I see you reverted my edit of the construction date for Oxford Female Institute (Fisher Hall). I was led to the 1856 construction date by this from the Ohio Historic Places Dictionary, Vol. 2: "The Institute was established ... in 1849 ... In 1854, a faction founded Oxford Female College and built Fisher Hall". I then found this on the MU library website: "Fisher Hall, located north and east of the Miami Main Campus, was dedicated on September 3, 1856 with much pomp as the Oxford Female College". I'm not sure which is correct, but I'll leave it alone. I just didn't want you to think that I'm willy-nilly going around and changing construction year categories. --Sanfranman59 (talk) 19:57, 8 December 2012 (UTC)

To add to the confusion, there were two similarly-named institutions and buildings in Oxford: Oxford Female College/Fisher Hall and Oxford Female Institute (If you include Western College for Women, there were three women's colleges in Oxford.) The former was demolished and the latter is still standing. The edit that I reverted was for an image of the Oxford Female Institute. - Eureka Lott 23:07, 8 December 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, I'm aware of that. I actually graduated from Western in 1981 after it was absorbed by Miami U. I see now that the building in the photo for which you reverted my edit isn't Fisher Hall. I thought it was when I first looked at it. Thanks for setting me straight. --Sanfranman59 (talk) 19:27, 9 December 2012 (UTC)

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

You removed the North Coast Harbor category. The photo was taken at North Coast Harbor. Please explain. Levdr1lp / talk 18:09, 24 September 2013 (UTC)

While the photo may have been taken at North Coast Harbor, it's not a picture of the area. There's nothing distinctive about the background - it could have been taken almost anywhere. Including the image in the category would be a disservice to visitors looking for images of North Coast Harbor. - Eureka Lott 20:35, 24 September 2013 (UTC)

Resolution[edit]

I think that you know ways of raising the resolution of an image, could you please teach them to me, or else help me with some pictures?

Yours sincerely,

--The Theosophist (talk) 03:00, 18 July 2014 (UTC)

Hi. I'm assuming that you're referring to File:Cattle Piece, 1843, by Thomas Peploe Wood.jpg. In this instance, all I did was to transfer the file that was originally uploaded at en.wikipedia. The image you transferred was a reduced version of the same file. I'm no expert, but I'm not aware of a way to increase the scale of raster images without losing quality. If you need help improving the quality of images in other ways, the folks at en:Wikipedia:Graphics Lab may be able to assist you. - Eureka Lott 16:31, 18 July 2014 (UTC)
Thanks anyway. On a side note, I think that the reason I uploaded it on a reduced analysis, was because that was how it was originally uploaded at enwiki and I could find it in a higher quality nowhere in the web.--The Theosophist (talk) 12:48, 19 July 2014 (UTC)

Tichnor Brothers[edit]

Hi. Thanks for helping out with the categories on these. I've started on adding them to city cats with cat-a-lot, hoping to do this before adding specific cats by hand so as to avoid overcatting. It's a little trickier than expected, since, as you may have noticed, the metadata is sometimes incorrect... if you notice cases like that one, maybe you could change the city in the description, too, since that's the part I'm matching against for rounding up by city? In any case, I appreciate the help, particularly in the eastern part of the country where my familiarity is minimal. :-) --Junkyardsparkle (talk) 23:52, 25 June 2015 (UTC)

Welcome, Dear Filemover![edit]

Commons File mover.svg

Hi EurekaLott, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:

  • Use the CommonsDelinker link in the {{rename}} template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
  • Please do not tag redirects as {{speedy}}. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references.
  • Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

Cleveland History Center[edit]

Regarding this edit — I was surprised that you transferred some of the categories, but not all, to Category:Cleveland History Center. It leaves me wondering, however, if the museum is just the house, or if it's more. Would it be wrong to move the house-related categories to Category:Cleveland History Center? Nyttend (talk) 13:53, 14 February 2016 (UTC)

Yes, the house is only one part of the facility. See the Historical Society's site for more information about the museum and research complex. - Eureka Lott 15:54, 14 February 2016 (UTC)

COM:OVERCAT[edit]

Stop putting File:Grand Pacific Hotel in Olmsted Falls.jpg into an obvious ancestor category of one of its current categories. The COM:OVERCAT policy is clear: always place an image in the most specific categories, and not in the levels above those. Exceptions exist (search that page for "Angela"), but this isn't any of those. If you persist, page protection will be sought to enforce this policy. Nyttend (talk) 05:57, 2 March 2016 (UTC)

I disagree with your strict interpretation of the categorization policy, because that logic inevitably leads to ridiculous conclusions. If we were to follow your opinion, Category:John Lennon should be removed from Category:Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees, because Category:The Beatles is also a member of that category, despite the fact that he was inducted as a solo artist, as well.
Also, please don't make threats when you're involved in a good-faith content dispute. It's a poor way to win people over. - Eureka Lott 20:11, 13 March 2016 (UTC)

Thanks...[edit]

...for catching the OH postcards that accidentally got swept into the PA category with that cat-a-lot action. I'll try to refine the selection a little better if I do that for any other states. --Junkyardsparkle (talk) 05:08, 15 April 2016 (UTC)

Replace hardcoding with template[edit]

Your latest comment helps me understand your meaning a lot better. At the moment, there's no way to override the default sorting, so I'd suggest that you revert the bot with some of these categories and return to the older setup with written-out category code and assigned sorts. If you look at these templates, you'll see that there are no variables (is that the right term?) or any other optional parameters: the only changeable stuff is the result of a mandatory parameter, and things break if you don't include something for each parameter. That's the limit of my coding ability. If you're familiar with implementing optional parameters (e.g. "altsort1=text" causes it to sort as "text" in one category, and omitting "altsort1=" merely allows it to sort normally), please go ahead and add them, and add tweaks for Georgia and Washington while you're at it, if you know how. Thanks!

Totally unrelated — would you be able to upload representative images from ten locations across the county? Most Cuyahoga County jurisdictions have good images in their en:wp articles, but we're missing good images for ten of them: Brooklyn Heights, Brook Park, Cuyahoga Heights, Glenwillow, Hunting Valley, Linndale, Newburgh Heights, North Royalton, Walton Hills, and the unincorporated sections of Chagrin Falls Township. If you can take some pictures in these places, it will be quite helpful. I've helped somewhat (while in the area today, I got photos for Orange, Woodmere, and Maple Heights), but I don't have many opportunities to visit the northeastern part of the state. @Nyttend: I tried making a version of the template with an optional sortkey. If I got it right, there's a sortkey with a default value that can be overridden by adding sort=replacement sortkey when calling the template.
I can't make any promises about getting photos for those Cuyahoga County communities, but if I have the opportunity to snap a picture, I'll be sure to snag one. - Eureka Lott 03:54, 27 April 2016 (UTC)
That works. I created Category:Test1 with the code of {{User:EurekaLott/TemplateTest|Big|Little}} and viewed the resulting Category:Buildings in Big County, Little; it told me that there was one child category, under "H". I then added a sort, making it {{User:EurekaLott/TemplateTest|Big|Little|sort=Test}}, and Buildings in Big County, Little has a subcategory under "T". Nyttend (talk) 04:23, 27 April 2016 (UTC)
@Nyttend: Thanks for confirming that. I guess the next step is to update the templates. I see {{USCountyBuildingMat}}, {{USCountyHouse}}, {{USCountyHouseMat}}, {{USCountyChurch}}, and {{USCountyChurchMat}}. Is that all of them? - Eureka Lott 02:58, 28 April 2016 (UTC)
