Hello, Ghedoghedo!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

File:Sinopa rapax 1.jpg[edit]

I was wondering if you could find a picture of this skeleton from the side view! There are next to no photographs of a mounted sinopa rapax skeleton available online, it would be amazing if there were more. If you could find the time to do this (the description says you work where this skeleton is mounted so I hope this is not crossing any lines) I would be eternally grateful.

We're discussing what to do with your pertinent photo as it's misidentified taking into account the content of the article. Any recollection of what was said about the specimen in question at the Natural History Museum is welcome. Many thanks in advance for your help. Dracontes (talk) 23:27, 4 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

File:Formicium giganteum.jpg[edit]

Was this specimen labeled as such in teh museum collection? Archibald et al 2011 state that no fossils of Formicium or Titanomyrma are known from amber. The specimen also seems very undersized for either genus.--Kevmin § 07:41, 6 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Odd the image is clearly of a Hymenopteran that is preserved in amber. Messel fossils are uniformly found as compression/impressions in oilstone.--Kevmin § 21:25, 11 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Serpula grandis[edit]

I am writing an article for Wikipedia on Kuphus polythalamia, a very large shipworm.

Is it possible that your image of the Serpulid fossil Serpula grandis - Aalen.JPG is a fossil of Kuphus polythalamia, previously known as Serpula polythalamia? I ask because I need an image for my article and WoRMS, which I use for taxonomy, does not list a Serpula grandis. How big is the fossil in your image?

Thanks for uploading File:Honania complicidentata.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Descriptions of files[edit]

Dear colleague,
Thank you for uploading a great number of paleontological images. But, unfortunately, value of images without informative descriptions is not very big. Usually museums give some information about their specimens: where they were found, what period/epoch they belong to and so on. If you include this information into description of your files, they would be much more useful. And why you always mark the descriptions as Italian, while actually they are English? If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Use of photos in a book[edit]

Hi Ghedo! I am writing a book about cephalopod evolution and would love to include one or more of your wonderful photos of fossil cephalopods (Phragmoteuthis, Leptoteuthis, Trachyteuthis.) The publisher is the University Press of New England, a nonprofit, and they've provided a permissions form which I could send to you if you are willing. Please feel free to respond here, or over e-mail: dannajoy@gmail.com

Thanks very much!

Vallesaurus cenensis caption[edit]

Hi Ghedo, very nice picture of Vallesaurus cenensis, which adds a lot to the page on Drepanosaurus - but please could you alter the caption to read "a relative of Drepanosaurus rather than "relative to Drepanosaurus", as mentioned in the discussion page, because this is slightly confusing! Dear Ghedoghedo,

we are currently working on a student textbook with the title “Biologie” scheduled to be published in 2019. In addition an electronic version of this book is planned which will be sold to scientific institutions and libraries. In this book we would like to use the following illustration

Thanks for uploading File:River dolphins.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:River dolphins.jpg) and the above demanded information in your request.

Logo for Wiki Science Competition

Dear uploader of European Science Photo Competition 2015 and Wiki Science Competition 2017, we would like to remind you that Wiki Science Competition 2019 has started in the whole world. It is now completed in Russia (active in May), Ukraine and France (active during November), but it's still open in all the other countries.

If you want to take part where WSC2019 is still open, please consult this page. Only some national categories are associated to competitions with local prizes.

If you are an expert user, please consider that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in their national category even if not uploaded with the main interface.

Please keep in mind that there is a new category this year, i.e. "nature and wildlife".

If you already took part in a country that has completed its upload phase, please consider improving the description in English of your files (click on the edit button), since such description is what the international jury will use to evaluate them. World finalists will be finalized after March 2020.

Sorry for bothering you and have a nice wiki.

I am Jens Kosch, a grad-student doing research on sauropod dentitions, and I have a question about your photograph of the Neosodon teeth you took in June 2009 and that is used on most pages about the genus: where did you take it? I am currently trying to locate the whereabouts of potential turiasaur and other basal eusauropod teeth for a project. (2020), and all teleosauroid taxa from the Kimmeridgian-Tithonian previously referred to Steneosaurus have either been given new genera or had old names (Aeolodon, Sericodon) resurrected (Foffa et al. 2019; Johnson 2019). Do you recall if the specimen you photographed is most similar to Aeolodon or Sericodon?

Hyaenodon or Cynohyaenodon?[edit]

Hello Ghedo. I have a question for you about these two pictures you uploaded here on Commons:

 • [Picture A] - skull of Hyaenodon cayluxi (from your user page Ghedo) made in January 2007
 • and [Picture B] - skull of Cynohyaenodon cayluxi (from your user page Ghedoghedo) made in May 2013

I notice that this is a same skull of a hyaenodontidae specie, but which one? I would be glad if you could tell me. --The Explaner (talk) 18:29, 14 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Dear uploader of European Science Photo Competition 2015 and Wiki Science Competition 2017 and Wiki Science Competition 2019, we would like to remind you that Wiki Science Competition 2021 has started in the whole world. It is now completed in Russia (active in May), but it's still open in almost all the other countries.

If you want to take part in WSC2021, please consult this page. Only some national categories are associated to competitions with local prizes.

If you are an expert user, we remind you that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in their national category even if not uploaded with the main interface.

Please keep in mind that there is a new category this year, that is "astronomy".

If you already took part in a country that has completed its upload phase, please consider improving the description in English of your files (click on the edit button), since such description is what the international jury will use to evaluate them. World finalists will be finalized after March 2020.

Sorry for bothering you and have a nice wiki.

The "Allognathosuchus" photo[edit]

I realize the museum label may have identified this as Allognathosuchus, but it's definitely Alligator prenasalis. (Any claim that A. prenasalis is a form of Allognathosuchus is inaccurate.)

File:Kennewick Man.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

Thank you!
