Permissions[edit]

I believe that the declaration from you that (The author has granted permission to the uploader) is not enough. There has to be an OTRS ticket, based on email sent from the author to permissions@wikimedia.org . --FocalPoint (talk) 20:38, 25 October 2014 (UTC)

Notification about possible deletion[edit]

Commons-emblem-issue.svg
Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Hi Yann, the pictures in question have not been retrieved from the respective blogs but provided to me via the original authors via email(all of the pictures are high res vs the blog ones), after I contacted them in order to have their work published under a free licence(CC-BY-SA-4) in the respective Wikipedia pages. I am currently educating myself over the OTRS requirements/process as another user pointed out to me; Should I create an OTRS ticket based on the email correspondence I had(e.g. forward it to the permissions email, email is in Greek) or should I ask the authors to send one themselves at permissions-commons@wikimedia.org based on the Commons:Email_templates#Declaration_of_consent_for_all_inquiries? Gts-tg (talk) 17:39, 26 October 2014 (UTC)
Hi, better to ask the authors to send email to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org, with cc to you (so that you are sure it happens). The email can be in Greek, since there is at least one member in the OTRS team of the Commons who is Greek (Badseed), but if it is in English, it is better. You can propose the letter to the authors to make it easier for them. --FocalPoint (talk) 18:29, 26 October 2014 (UTC)
A small correction: You cannot create an OTRS ticket. It is created by those who have volunteered to monitor the emails sent to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org . --FocalPoint (talk) 18:34, 26 October 2014 (UTC)
If Yann has a different opinion, I am sure he will let you know. --FocalPoint (talk) 18:31, 26 October 2014 (UTC)
Please complete the procedure as FocalPoint said. And yes, it is better if the discussion happens on Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Gts-tg. You can add that page in your watchlist. Regards, Yann (talk) 19:49, 26 October 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Colonisation 1800 EL.svg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. File:Griechischen und phönizischen Kolonien.jpg[edit]

The description says 4th century B.C. The legend says 8th to 6th century B.C. This difference of 200 to 400 years means that something in this map is seriously wrong! -- Ies (talk) 15:30, 1 December 2014 (UTC)

I agree, my own changes had to do with Vergina and Aige marked as 'non-Greek'(see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macedonia_%28ancient_kingdom%29 and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_Macedonians for this matter) so it makes me suspicious about how the rest of the map is laid out. Also, I don't quite like how it says Greek colonisation as the title and includes Phoenician as well, plus it has all the Greek cities in mainland Greece mapped as colonies of..themselves? Hello Gts-tg, the following content you uploaded violates one or more of our policies and therefore has been or will soon be deleted:

File:Church of John Chrysostom in Vari, Kefalonia, Greece.jpg

The Wikimedia Commons (this website) only hosts media files with a realistic educational purpose and that can be used for any purpose, including:
  • use in any work, regardless of content
  • creation of derivative works
  • commercial use
  • free distribution

See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons, and Commons:Image casebook for some specific examples. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on Wikimedia Commons; "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.

Please make sure that you only upload educational content you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above. Please note that derivative works of copyrighted material are also considered copyrighted. Again, please read through Commons:Licensing, which is quite crucial to understanding how Wikimedia Commons works. Thanks for your contribution, and please do leave me a message if you have further questions.

Pay attention to licensing
Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content: images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose.

File:Anonymus Londinensis V 23-45.jpg seems to be free (or it would be proposed for deletion), but it was identified as having a wrong license. Usually, it is because a public domain image is tagged with a free license, or because the stated source or other information is not sufficient to prove the selected tag is correct. Please verify that you applied the correct license tag for this file.

If you believe this file has the correct license, please explain why on the file description page.

Autopatrol given[edit]

Commons Autopatrolled.svg

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. ~riley (talk) 09:16, 12 May 2016 (UTC)

File:Panoramic view of Constantinople, Rigas Charta, 1797.jpg[edit]

—Ah3kal (talk) 08:31, 22 May 2016 (UTC)
—Ah3kal (Talk) 19:23, 22 May 2016 (UTC)
—Ah3kal (Talk) 15:55, 22 May 2016 (UTC)

—Ah3kal (Talk) 19:23, 22 May 2016 (UTC)

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2015 is open![edit]

POTY barnstar.svg

You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2015 Picture of the Year contest.

Dear Gts-tg,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2015 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the tenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2015) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1322 candidate images. There are 56 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category. In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 28 May 2016, 23:59:59 UTC.

A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Μάριος Βάρβογλης - Marios Varvoglis.jpg, was missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. The file probably has been deleted. If you've got all required information, request undeletion providing this information and the link to the concerned file ([[:File:Μάριος Βάρβογλης - Marios Varvoglis.jpg]]).

If you created the content yourself, enter {{Own}} as the source. If you did not add a licensing template, you must add one. You may use, for example, {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} or {{Cc-zero}} to release certain rights to your work.

If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so.

Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

Texniths (talk) 09:48, 27 July 2017 (UTC)

Texniths the source of the file was LivePedia (Magenta encyclopedia content) at the time when it was still offering it's contents under GFDL. I noticed that Livepedia is dead now so I have updated the file source with a copy from the WayBackMachine link (the image itself is not available though). Gts-tg (talk) 00:33, 3 August 2017 (UTC)

Texniths I had a further think about this and probably it would be best to be deleted anyhow as there is too much uncertainty on whether it really is GFDL or not. If necessary this can be transferred over to local wikis under Fair Use policy but not in Commons. Gts-tg (talk) 00:58, 3 August 2017 (UTC)

Yes, exactly. There is uncertainity, that it was taken at least 70 years ago, since he died in 1967. But, surely, fair use in local wikis would be a much more safe solution. --Texniths (talk) 06:52, 3 August 2017 (UTC)

Texniths I have nominated the file for deletion as per the uncertainty of the licence. However there is a source (updated to Wayback) so there isn't a missing source problem. Gts-tg (talk) 16:18, 3 August 2017 (UTC)

Category discussion warning

Greek coins has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

What do you prefer?[edit]

Gts-tg, you have uploaded two times the same image with a small difference in name (name surname and surname name):

I proposed one of them for deletion.

  1. Which name do you prefer we keep?
  2. Is there a chance that there are other files with the same issue? Please check -you would probably know better how to find them easily and fast

Hi Pp.paul.4, the file should have been available in the source provided, but I just checked myself and I can't see it either. Given that the image in question is dated at 1486, and the one available in the source is 1502 (also uploaded in the same batch of uploading 25 March 2016 at File:Frontispiece_-_Breydenbach_Bernhard_Von_-_1502.jpg as the other image), I would think that the image was probably removed from the source. Other than this, I have no recollection of using a different source. Gts-tg (talk) 13:44, 14 October 2018 (UTC)

File:Portable sundial, Memphis, Roman Egypt, 4th century AD (reconstruction).jpg[edit]

Hello. Are you sure of the identification of the sundial in File:Portable sundial, Memphis, Roman Egypt, 4th century AD (reconstruction).jpg? It should be another portable sundial, the one in the Science Museum [8]. Could you please check and change the identification if this is the case? --Sirmione65 (talk) 23:08, 10 April 2020 (UTC)

Sirmione65 yes, the description has been added according to the caption that the exhibit was displaying. I had a look at the page you suggested and it turns out they are identical. E.g. among the various images it contains (some of them are of the background), have a look at [9] which displays the front, and cross compare it with File:Portable sundial, Memphis, Roman Egypt, 4th century AD (reconstruction).jpg. You can tell its the same item by the upper left smaller dial (figures around it), and by the writing of the months in Greek around the larger dial. Gts-tg (talk) 17:14, 16 April 2020 (UTC)

South Sudan border[edit]

Hello.

Can you add the white international border for South Sudan which became independent in 2011 in File:World alphabets & writing systems EL.svg, File:World alphabets & writing systems ES.svg and File:World alphabets & writing systems.svg? It is still shown as part of Sudan in these maps.
