Anders Behring Brevik's photographs[edit]

Hello Herby; seeing the way you closed the vote on Breivik's photograph - don't you consider that all the files in the same category (i.e. Category:Anders Behring Breivik ought to go as well following the same argumentation (which I posted in my deletion rationale)? All the files (except the PDF of Breivik's detention report) have been copied from his manifesto, so these follow the same restrictions and copyright issues. Cheers, Wpedzich (talk) 12:07, 4 August 2011 (UTC)

Just going offline so no time to look now but if they are the same rationale I would agree. There is nothing like clear explicit permission for the one I deleted. --Herby talk thyme 12:13, 4 August 2011 (UTC)
yes, they are, which I've confronted with Breivik's erm... document. Wpedzich (talk) 13:08, 4 August 2011 (UTC)
In the end I think they probably need individual consideration. For example I do think that this one might well be a self portrait? --Herby talk thyme 16:02, 4 August 2011 (UTC)
We cound try to consider each of the pictures a self-portrait... everything could be achieved with a delayed-timer shutter release and a good light. The rationale I see behind all the pictures in question is the license, since they all come from one source - Breivik's manifesto - and all, as the whole content of his work, have been made available freely to all the Europeans (not the exact wording, but you'll find the original in deletion discussions for sure). Considering the legal status, especially lack of clear permission, I would remove them all (per the argumntation above), but naturally, community discussion is appreciated, as long as it is not emotional. Wpedzich (talk) 17:41, 4 August 2011 (UTC)
Emotional arguments have no place in licensing discussions and would be ignored by any Commons admin I know. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 17:44, 4 August 2011 (UTC)
You deleted the image with the argument that you have not seen anything that would convince you that the owner has legally released it. However, there have been a nunber of arguments in the discussion why it is very likely that the image was indeed legally released by the owner. And you fully disregarded all arguments that nothing about a copyright infringement has been proved or even seemed likely. I think you should have considered BOTH sides, not just one, as you did. And that has nothing to do with "emotional discussion", just, obviously, with the weighting of arguments. The copyright infringement was, and is, just an allegation and no evidence for the truth of it has been unearthed or forwarded throughout the discussion. And so I don't understand why you still deleted the image - just because of an unproved allegation? --MaxM (talk) 09:11, 7 August 2011 (UTC)

Frankly I am insulted to think that you would believe I did not consider both sides of the argument however I see your experience on Commons is limited so maybe I should ignore that aspect.

The issue for Commons is solely "has an image been validly freely licensed?". As we are not even sure of the actual copyright holder of this image then equally we cannot be sure that is it has been validly licensed and that is that. The problem is not the "unproved allegations" you refer to but the simple lack of proof of valid licensing. --Herby talk thyme 09:27, 7 August 2011 (UTC)

But you also haven't got proof for any wrongdoing, have you? And that's the point you've been missing! --MaxM (talk) 09:54, 7 August 2011 (UTC)
We don't need proof of wrongdoing - we do need proof of valid licensing. --Herby talk thyme 10:50, 7 August 2011 (UTC)
If wrongdoing, such as copyright infringement is alleged, proof is, of course, needed. That's the way justice goes - if someone is sent to jail it's because his wrongdoing was proved and not because his innocence couldn't be. Innocent until proven otherwise, that's one of the core principles of justice. --MaxM (talk) 20:14, 7 August 2011 (UTC)
You really do not understand licensing I'm afraid. We cannot host images where there are any real doubts about licensing. There are real doubts here so we cannot host them. Nothing to do with justice and everything to do with the legality of licensing. --Herby talk thyme 07:25, 8 August 2011 (UTC)
And that's the point - there weren't any real doubts, just unsubstantiated allegations and claims, and that cannot be enough to delete an image. --MaxM (talk) 08:54, 8 August 2011 (UTC)

OK - you obviously are resistant to listening to licensing logic so I'll not continue with my postings here. You are welcome to watch out here which is the undeletion request. It would surprise me if the file were undelete as it is clearly has not been validly licensed. --Herby talk thyme 10:04, 8 August 2011 (UTC)

Commons Delinker question[edit]

Hello Herbythyme,

is there any way to automatically replace a file across several wikipedia versions if that file has already been removed by Commons Delinker? It's about those Avaya images, now deleted, which Geek 2003 wants to replace with new images. Most of them were used only once, on the English wikipedia, but File:1140E-7.JPG was used several dozen times across several projects, if I remember correctly. Unfortunately, access to the Commons Delinker log seems to be broken ([1]), so I can't even tell from where it was removed. Regards --Rosenzweig τ 14:38, 5 August 2011 (UTC)

I'd try that question on the pump on admin board. Could just undelete it tho? So long as the earlier version gets removed? No expert on bot type stuff. Regards --Herby talk thyme 15:44, 5 August 2011 (UTC)
OK, I'll try that. Thanks. --Rosenzweig τ 16:10, 5 August 2011 (UTC)

Noticeboard discussion[edit]

Hi Herbythyme, Since you said that you will not return to the discussion at blocks and protections, I will repeat here what I wrote there; which is that I think you are one of the best administrators Commons has. I think that despite that, as you know, we have agreed virtually never. I respect your intention, and efforts, to be fair. I could hope for nothing more than that from any administrator. Malcolm Schosha (talk) 21:52, 5 August 2011 (UTC)

File:CAPA VEJA 0BAMA.jpg[edit]

Hello Herbythyme, What? Copyright violation? Do you put yourself higher than a member of the Editorial department of Editora Abril? Its seems to me since you have deleted this cover of Veja. Good work, well done. Excuse me. Your are wrong. Dont you think that Editora Abril would not provide a cover to be placed on WP pages, without knowing that they must be given a free license? What nonsense is that?--Cruks (talk) 11:26, 7 August 2011 (UTC)

I am not ignoring Copyright requirements, it is because I am not used to such requirements. It is too complicated. Myself I am a professional photographer and I have worked many many years for AP and Time Life, if you know what I mean. You dont need to tell me all that nonsense. And another thing, if you as an administrator dont estimate my work uploading pictures for WP Commons, I feel sorry for you. I am one of the few here that engages uploading photos in order to improve the quality of the pages. I have asked Editora Abril to provide another Copyright license.--Cruks (talk)
Please calm down and stop making accusations. Remember that while you may have worked for Time Life and the AP, here you are simply an anonymous user, about whom we know nothing other than that you have a beautiful image of Freiburg on your user page, and you have uploaded 129 images on Commons, some of which have had licensing problems.
There is a simple problem here. The image is the cover of a magazine, which is certainly copyrighted. There is no evidence that the magazine, Veja, has given the necessary license for the cover to be kept on Commons. Please have the magazine do this using the procedure at Commons:OTRS. That, and only that, will solve the problem.      Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 12:11, 7 August 2011 (UTC)
Hi everybody there. These recent deletions made me very upset and I will certainly double check if I ever contribute to Wikipedia Commons again. I am sick and tired about all these regulations and requests. And for sure I will not contribute any more to improve articles with any pictures here. Do what you want, but not with me. I am out.--Cruks (talk) 15:42, 7 August 2011 (UTC)
Well that would certainly be too bad -- I haven't looked at all your images, but we always hate to lose a contributor.
On the the other hand, I really don't understand your being upset over File:CAPA VEJA 0BAMA.jpg. What did you expect? -- it's a recent cover of a magazine and you have offered no evidence that the magazine has licensed it to Commons for general use. Given your experience with Time-Life and the AP, you must understand that all magazines have a copyright and by now you also must understand that Commons works very hard to respect copyrights.     Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 15:56, 7 August 2011 (UTC)
FWIW I am replying on the user's talk page in much the same vein as you Jim. The contributions that have not been deleted as copyvios are good. The lack of understanding of licensing from a professional photographer is strange (the volume of copyvios equally so). --Herby talk thyme 16:02, 7 August 2011 (UTC)

Whoa[edit]

All that stuff was getting flagged up at IRC. That user said "i got to destroy that user guy the political master guy in a minute, f***** watch and wait", any indication as to what he means Herby? Regards :) - PoliMaster talk/spy 15:29, 9 August 2011 (UTC)

Interesting that you just happened to be around to revert it isn't it. --Herby talk thyme 15:38, 9 August 2011 (UTC)
I was on IRC at the time, I had only just gone onto #cvn-commons and there were like loads of triggers! Anyways what does the person mean by that, in your opinion? -- PoliMaster talk/spy 15:42, 9 August 2011 (UTC)
The strange thing is that I rarely see vandalism these days unless you are around so maybe you can explain it? --Herby talk thyme 15:44, 9 August 2011 (UTC)
No, I can't, I'm afraid. I am always online at my work computer on weekdays anyway and do look at my watchlist, so when that Brazil flag got edited, I couldn't unfortunately, revert the first one, but I reverted the second piece of vandalism. I am not contributing much at the moment, because of what's been happening, but that person whom I believe is the same one editing my talk page, I like to keep a look out for them. Would you mind answering the original question please by any chance possibly? :D -- PoliMaster talk/spy 15:49, 9 August 2011 (UTC)
Would you like me to stay away from Commons? Is it because of what happened at en.wikipedia? If it is, I understand. :-) I can understand that I am no longer trustable. -- PoliMaster talk/spy 15:52, 9 August 2011 (UTC)

Can you explain the reversion of edits by you on 20 July here? --Herby talk thyme 15:57, 9 August 2011 (UTC)

Yes I can, I did log out and change that, but immediately changed it back, this was the first time that I had used IRC for patrolling vandalism, so I wanted to see how it appeared when it came up. I know it was wrong and I'm sorry for it. Can you please advise me on the above edits still, or not? -- PoliMaster talk/spy 16:01, 9 August 2011 (UTC)
Personally I think that is also likely to be you I'm afraid. No one else seems to be that interested in you so I have no idea why anyone should mention you. Maybe best if you stay away I think. --Herby talk thyme 16:08, 9 August 2011 (UTC)
Yes, I will stay away. It seems as though as hard as I try, I can't change people's minds about what I did and that seems to be bias'ing you. I don't know why you'd think that it is me, it would be nice to know but it's up to you to tell me. My intentions have tried to be right. Thank you. :o) - PoliMaster talk/spy 16:12, 9 August 2011 (UTC)
You always seem to be around conveniently when such vandalism occurs. There are links between you and the vandal edits and it is far more likely that it is you than someone else all in all. The possibly that someone else would edit in such a way is extremely low - it is not the first time I have seen such behaviour.
Creating vandalism which you then revert is not likely to make people think better of you I'm afraid. --Herby talk thyme 16:58, 9 August 2011 (UTC)
Yes, you showed me a link, what am I supposed to do about that? - PoliMaster talk/spy 17:07, 9 August 2011 (UTC)
It merely explains my actions to you and the community, thanks --Herby talk thyme 17:13, 9 August 2011 (UTC)

User CriciumaSC[edit]

Hello Herbythyme, is it possible to check if User:Pseudo is related to CriciumaSC case? As I have explained to Martin, like previous sockpuppets, an ip (the same one) has inserted the image to pt:Criciúma article just after it was uploaded here. In this case, image is low resolution, maybe an excerpt of a larger image, making it difficult to find the original. Ednei amaral (talk) 05:12, 10 August 2011 (UTC)

Nothing obvious though suspicious. I have deleted the image - can you let me have links to the images that you say are the same but are now deleted so that I can review that - short of time for looking at present. Regards --Herby talk thyme 07:46, 10 August 2011 (UTC)
Some file names already used in pt:Criciúma, since November 2010: File:Criciumar.jpg, File:Cricciuma.jpg, File:criciuma_santacatarina.jpg, File:Cidadsulsc.jpg, File:Pano criciuma.jpg, File:Ccjz.jpg, File:Cricisc.jpg, File:FerroviaTerezaCristina.jpg, File:criciumasc.jpg, File:DSCF2958-1.jpg, File:Paranomicriciuma.jpg, File:DSCF2967.jpg, File:criciumasantac.jpg, File:Criciumadesc.jpg, File:0DSC02394.jpg, File:Criciumasantacc.jpg, File:Criciumasanta.jpg, File:Cidadecriciumasc.jpg, File:rm4htt.jpg, File:Criciuma_aerea.jpg, File:Mapa_rod_criciuma.jpg, File:Cri_ciuma444.jpg, File:crici_ma.jpg. I can't say (and I don't know) this last one is a copy of one of these. I just said thar the Ip who inserted them in pt.Wikipedia article is the same who inserted many of others from this list (see [2], [3], [4], [5], and [6], among others), and s/he did it just after the image was uploaded here. Ednei amaral (talk) 15:45, 14 August 2011 (UTC)

Hello again Herbythyme, is it possible to check if there is any relation between User:Webmast and User:HelitonEsteves (blocked indefinitelly, as a sockpuppet of User:CriciumaSC)? HelitonEsteves has just added to Wikipedia a photo uploaded by Webmast here. This time, he wait some time to use the image, what may be an evidence it's not the same person or maybe just and strategy, since it would not be easy to find this uncategorized media. Again, I couldn't find a source of the image, since he uses low resolution images (maybe cut from larger ones). Thanks, Ednei amaral (talk) 00:53, 7 October 2011 (UTC)

Nonendo[edit]

Dear Herby, thanks for your response here. I think the account UltimateShuffle (created on August 13th) belongs to him as well and I've added that to the page. Is that ok? Or should I file a new request? Best regards, Mathonius (talk) 10:14, 14 August 2011 (UTC)

Working on it :) Thanks & regards --Herby talk thyme 11:08, 14 August 2011 (UTC)

Advice. please[edit]

I need advice and, perhaps, action. I'm going to give you all the threads involved, read what you choose:

Please see

Commons:Deletion requests/File:Darth vader hot air balloon.jpg.

The image involved is similar to this

File:Darth vader hot air balloon 1.jpg

and this

File:Leon_hot_air_balloon_festival_2010.jpg

The user has gone on at great length on my talk page

User_talk:Jameslwoodward#Strong_disagreement

about harassment and censorship and now has uploaded and done this

Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Hot air balloon sans darth vader.jpg

Because it was a POTD, there's also a discussion at the Pump

Commons:Village_pump#Image_of_the_day_deleted

in which the uploader is not involved.

At the DR and on my talk page, there has been nothing but support for my decision, and I have no doubts that it was correct -- we would need OTRS permission from Lucasfilm to keep the image. At the Featured Picture nomination, however, it's about even, which is sort of scary. Since I never frequent those parts, I have no sense for the activity there.

The uploader, User:Tomascastelazo has made it clear that he does not respect our rules on copyright:

"In this case, the picture is that of a public event, where the object in question is shown within a context. If someone is to use the image as a copyright violation, then let the owner hash it out against the offender, why should the community defend a private individual who chooses to display his goods in public? That is the risk he takes!"

I have not looked at all his other files -- except File:Leon hot air balloon festival 2010.jpg, about which I was specifically asked, but I would guess that there are other problems.

I'm tempted to close the FP nomination as vandalism, go through the rest of his files for other problems, and then block any further reaction, but I think that's probably an over-reaction. I'm also aware that, save for these and maybe a few other problems, he has given us a wide variety of perfectly beautiful images. That doesn't excuse the problems, but it does make dealing with them harder than a simple vandal who we can just blow away.

Thoughts?

     Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 12:29, 10 August 2011 (UTC)

Gee thanks...
These are just thoughts for now though
Tomascastelazo has behaved badly and seems to wish to ignore copyright when it suits him. However the timing of the DR etc was at best unfortunate. We cannot ignore copyright to suit FP folk I'm afraid.
I profoundly dislike this aspect of copyright issues because at the outer edges of the outcomes I don't see as much clarity as I do in other copyright issues. However this is clearly derivative (as is Jebulon's edit of the same image) to me.
All in all I fully agree with your logic and actions - I would ask you to maybe take a breath for now rather than take any further action though. In the end FP folk are a different genre to most folk on Commons - although I rarely visit the area now I do know that - and sometimes logic goes out the window.
Maybe post on an admin board just to broaden it out but if Tomascastelazo does not behave better there may only be one outcome available sadly. --Herby talk thyme 13:11, 10 August 2011 (UTC)
  • I don´t know whether to cry or laugh. How can you declare that I have behaved badly? What does that mean? That I refuse to accept your logic? I am dead serious abuot the issue. I uploaded the files in good faith, under legal conditions and of a public event. Please define what you mean by "bad behaviour." Your judgement is an insult. --Tomascastelazo (talk) 13:28, 18 August 2011 (UTC)
    • Simple - you created that file not to attack the dilemma between copyright law and the photographer (which would have been valid as others said there) but to attack Commons adherence to the law and the work of the admin concerned. That is bad behaviour in my book. The law is the law - may another repository which breaks the law if you want (or use Flickr as others who abuse the law do) - on Commons adhere to it or work to change the law not the fact that Commons respects it. --Herby talk thyme 14:30, 29 August 2011 (UTC)

Your block of Dendrolo[edit]

In July, you blocked Dendrolo here with a block reason of (Abusing multiple accounts: cross wiki), even though the account had only edited here but once, last November. I have extensively researched the issue of Brox/Dendrolo/Redegavimas (all acknowledged socks) and it appears that a transient problem with the Dendrolo account (one day of arguably disruptive editing) on nl.wiki was conflated, though what appears to be a set of nl checkuser errors, compounded by an unclear meta checkuser report, into a claim of "cross-wiki" abuse. The meta issue has been cleared up.[7] Dendrolo is an active user on de.wiki, and may need to edit commons under that name. I will suggest to Brox that he explicitly link the accounts here, but will you please consider unblocking? I'm seeing no reason for the block that applies to commons, at all. (SUL creates "socks" if one has historically created different user names on different wikis.) Thanks. --Abd (talk) 21:10, 15 August 2011 (UTC)

Reviewing this I see the user is blocked on other wikis so I personally see no need to revisit the block currently. If the situation changes than there might be a need.
As with any rights mine were granted by the community to serve the community so it would probably be best if you were to ask the community via the pump or the admin boards if you feel this is wrong. Do link to this and advise me if you do as I am currently very busy off wiki. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 14:26, 29 August 2011 (UTC)

Block review, please[edit]

Although I've given you four links, this has much less content than the last one of these I asked you to look at. Thanks,      Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 11:20, 6 September 2011 (UTC)

Hi Herby[edit]

Checked into Commons again - it's been a while. I had a good look around, I even followed a link from Mattbucks talk to COM:AN/U (which I unwatched a long time ago...)- that was depressing I also saw some very nice new uploads, and a lot of sensible and patient comments on talkpages, so I realise that this project is in good hands even though a lot of the people most active a couple of years ago aren't around any more. So - I both got reminded why I spent so much time here wikiages ago, and why I left this place - all I'm really saying is keep up the good work :) Finn Rindahl (talk) 22:35, 6 September 2011 (UTC)

"Constantinople"/Wikinger[edit]

Hi, thanks for processing Commons:Requests for checkuser/Case/Constantinople. Do you think it would now be at last possible to get some kind of formal, documented, citable ban decision on the puppetmaster? The last few times he's popped up with new socks, it's been rather frustrating trying to get Commons admins to take rapid Block-Revert-(Delete)-Ignore action, which is the only thing that helps, in the absence of something analogous to the formal community ban we have on en-wiki on other projects. And every time it becomes necessary to discuss this case and try to persuade admins to act, that is always an occasion triggering a stream of follow-up disruption, just as we saw with the multiple throwaway socks this time, which were created purely in order to disrupt that process. Fut.Perf. 13:53, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

Weird (& shows how things change) - generally the Commons admins I know would do just that - block with no fuss. There shouldn't be any need to persuade folk to act in my opinion. Commons doesn't do "formality" but if you have issues and I am around I'm happy to help.
For what it is worth such a disruptive puppetmaster does not need a formal resolution to deal with them as far as I can see. They are persistently disruptive, ignore policies/practices and do not contribute positively to the project. --Herby talk thyme 14:12, 8 September 2011 (UTC)
Thanks. Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/User problems#Wikinger socking again, Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/User problems/Archive 22#User:Constantinople and Commons:Deletion requests/File:ConstantinopleCases.gif were the last instances I had to deal with him. Fut.Perf. 14:19, 8 September 2011 (UTC)
Yes I found some of those. He just seems like part of a normal day's work for a Commons admin. His behaviour is quite obvious. Sadly the range used is quite varied so range blocks are not an option but equally he is very obvious from a CU perspective. --Herby talk thyme 14:25, 8 September 2011 (UTC)
I know, range-blocking him is a pain. One "cosmetic" factor that may have contributed to the feeling of uncertainty in communicating the situation to admins unfamiliar with the case may be that the local instantiations of his original account names Wikinger (talk · contribs) and CBMIBM (talk · contribs) aren't currently even blocked. Perhaps that should be changed, if only for the symbolic effect. Fut.Perf. 14:27, 8 September 2011 (UTC)
Commons can be quite picky about blocking folk who are not active and at times I would agree. In this case I do not so ✓ Done. --Herby talk thyme 14:36, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

Tut tut - not doing my job properly. Add in this user and looked for some more - quite prolific! --Herby talk thyme 14:42, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

Yes - blocked by someone else and I ran CU. Maybe we should tag the puppet pages to save him creating another account to tag it with...:) --Herby talk thyme 18:21, 10 September 2011 (UTC)
I'm the someone else that blocked the puppet. See here as well. Best, --Marco Aurelio (disputatio) 19:48, 10 September 2011 (UTC) (formerly Dferg)

If you would put a   instead of a normal " " space between talk thyme, e.g. talk thyme, the link to your talk-page would not break on lines. Just a suggestion :) -- RE rillke questions? 20:28, 10 September 2011 (UTC)

Not quite sure what you mean (& that is the first comment on it and around 5 years of use). --Herby talk thyme 08:09, 11 September 2011 (UTC)
It was a suggestion. Sometimes talk is at the end of one line and thyme at the beginning of the following one. If they are both in the fist line or in the next, it would ease reading and looks better. As I said: Completely unimportant and just a suggestion. Further reading en:Nbsp -- RE rillke questions? 10:58, 11 September 2011 (UTC)
Interesting - I have never seen it look like that nor has anyone mentioned it - what browser are you using? --Herby talk thyme 17:29, 11 September 2011 (UTC)
What a question from a CU :) Firefox 6 but it occurs in IE, too. It's just a question of width of the browser's window. If you want me to "prove it", I could upload a screenshot. -- RE rillke questions? 18:55, 11 September 2011 (UTC)

I think we will leave that discussion here. For the benefit of those watching the page or passing I would never dream of such ridiculous abuse of my rights as suggested. --Herby talk thyme 08:35, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

Sorry, of course you wouldn't and frequent users know this. This is my kind of humour. Unfortunately it often gets wrong. I hope you didn't take it as an insult. Personally I wouldn't have a problem with this because a) by using the feedback function of upload wizard my user client+OS were reported on a public place without telling me this before (yes, the german translation does not include this warning) and b) when joining web-chat, my IP is visible to everyone. -- RE rillke questions? 09:52, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

CU[edit]

Hey, We have a serial socker creating hoaxes on en.wiki en:Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Akshata Sen/Archive, I found that some of the accounts were created on Commons too, one of them (User:Dispota 123 uploaded a copyvio File:Roshni Mukherjee.jpg (a real actor under a hoax name/role!). Would it be possible to block the socks here or would I need to file a local CU for that? Not all the en.wiki socks have accounts here, and I don't know if there are Commons only socks either. cheers SpacemanSpiff (talk) 17:13, 15 September 2011 (UTC)

Blocked that one - nothing else on that IP but feel free to drop a note of other accounts here on Commons and I'll deal with them - cheers --Herby talk thyme 18:03, 15 September 2011 (UTC)
Thank you, I haven't found other socks that have uploaded anything yet. I'll take a deeper look after tomorrow's en.wiki CU! It's a vast IP range and on en.wiki a range block wasn't feasible. cheers. SpacemanSpiff (talk) 19:01, 15 September 2011 (UTC)

User:Szczecinolog[edit]

Hello there, User:Szczecinolog complained via my talk page on pl:Wikipedia about being blocked as sockpuppet on Commons, which she claims to be invalid reason. Please review this block; Szczecinolog's account on Polish wikipedia has clean history, no blockades. 89.171.8.50 08:52, 16 September 2011 (UTC)

Hi - puppet account as shown here so I don't think it will be unblocked. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 08:56, 16 September 2011 (UTC)

A photo you edited is about to appear as POTD in en[edit]

Hi Herby,

I got pleasantly reminded of you today, as a message was placed on my en talk page, that this photo that you helped edit, will make it POTD on October 17, 2011 on EN. I hope you are well. Best wishes from Denmark, --Slaunger (talk) 20:58, 16 October 2011 (UTC)

Pleased to hear it - best from the UK :) --Herby talk thyme 07:19, 17 October 2011 (UTC)

Your speedy keep[edit]

How does my conflict with an user justify keeping the user's personal travel log that he doesn't even use on his userpage?
I would advise you, for your own sake, to assess users' contributions on their own merits, rather than by judging the underlying intentions. Thanks --My another account (talk) 23:01, 16 October 2011 (UTC)

User messages[edit]

✓ Done. Next time you can ask me directly to save time. After the new code is committed, you need to add

window.installOldLinks = true;

to your js to get all the links back. If you click on one of the links, it is checked whether the user exists and then you can hit enter. Just one Enter-Key more. I estimate, because API-requests are faster than fake-edit, +-0 time is required. Kind regards -- RE rillke questions? 14:08, 17 October 2011 (UTC)

I reverted myself because I realised it didn't matter that much to me as I doubt I will be that much work here. I may take a look if I get time. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 15:26, 17 October 2011 (UTC)

Request review of deletion[edit]

Hi, this morning you deleted the file 63279_1756390757966_1484893223_1843282_2986581_n.jpg with this log entry. The user User:Maxikray added that image to en:Wetsuit on 12 May 2011 where it remained as a useful addition to the article until today. Maxikray removed the image from the article at 06:14 UTC this morning before requesting its deletion as "unused". You deleted the image an hour later. This did not give anyone else time to consider whether the deletion was warranted and I object strongly to contributors "taking back" their contributions without good reason. Unless there is an overriding reason not to do so, I'd like you to restore the image so that it can be returned to the en:Wetsuit article. That would allow others to consider any request for deletion in a reasonable timescale. Regards --RexxS (talk) 12:17, 22 October 2011 (UTC)

Apologies - I hadn't realised that it was (sort of) in use - the piccy was not brilliant maybe. Restored now - feel free to use it and a DR would be the way to go if the user wants it gone. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 13:27, 22 October 2011 (UTC)
Many thanks Herby, I agree it's not a great pic, but it's of historical interest - you don't see many wetsuits with a 'beavertail' and fasteners these days, so it's not so easy to replace. If I may, can I beg one more favour of you? The file name is so useless that I can't even add the file to a category because the wikimedia software complains about the name. Do you think you could rename/move the file to File:Beavertail wetsuit with fasteners.jpg or something similar (no redirect needed!). I'd be happy to sort out the links in en:Wetsuit if you were able to do the renaming here. Thanks again, --RexxS (talk) 19:12, 22 October 2011 (UTC)
✓ Sorted cheers --Herby talk thyme 07:11, 23 October 2011 (UTC)
And I've now fixed the link on en:Wetsuit and added the image file to a category. Many thanks once more. Cheers --RexxS (talk) 16:04, 23 October 2011 (UTC)

Again we base block on behaviour here on Commons. While there was an initial misunderstanding that appears to have been resolved. I was aware of the en wp block but thanks. --Herby talk thyme 15:18, 26 October 2011 (UTC)
I was blocked because I didn't know wikimedias was just for photos.Cinzoo man (talk) 15:34, 26 October 2011 (UTC)

Why did you delete this image: File:Sock-pupper upload.jpg[edit]

A party to the discussion did not (and may still not) comprehend what is being said. This image is necessary to overcome this lack of comprehension. Please restore. Thanks. --DeeperQA (talk) 18:18, 25 October 2011 (UTC)

That image makes false statements about wikipedia and is nothing more than trolling by an indef-blocked wikipedia user. Good removal. P.S. The user is making legal threats. On wikipedia that would qualify for an automatic indef-block. I don't know what the rules are here. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 13:40, 26 October 2011 (UTC)

Actually it was re-uploaded and another admin caught it. Fortunately we are not en wp so we don't have those kinda rules and base judgements on behaviour on Commons (mostly) and at present I'm fence sitting which is uncomfortable but saves making big mistakes sometimes. I'll get off it shortly :) Cheers --Herby talk thyme 14:08, 26 October 2011 (UTC)
I'm just letting you know. :) I would think that legal threats are not permissible here, either. Not threats about copyrights, but just threats about retribution (as if). ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 16:00, 26 October 2011 (UTC)

Message from Circo M+T[edit]

Hello Herby, We have received the message that you left us in the User talk:Circo M+T titled "copyright violations".

First of all we would like to apologize if we surpassed or infringed or broke the terms and policies of wikimedia commons, we are inexperienced and weren't conscious of the messages left in the User talk: Circo M+T until there were too many.

On the other hand, We are really confused about the application of the terms for uploading images. We can't understand the reason why we are violating the copyright because we are the copyright holders, the owners of the original pictures, and the authors of many of them. But also we are the architects, therefore also the authors of the buildings depicted in those pictures. Some of those pictures had been uploaded before to several websites, but under our permission and we had always kept the copyright.

Now, because of the trobles we are finding in wikimedia, we are uploading this images as "public domain", renouncing to the sharealike creative commons licensing or even the copyright. They mean a gift or a present from us to wikimedia commons and wikipedia as a way to contribute to the common project of free encyclopeding. So we are really sorry if we have disturbed you, but we haven´t been able to transmit this in any other way to anyone until now.

We would appreciate if you could help or guide us with some advises about this issue.

Thank you very much in advance and best regards,

Circo M+T 19:27 07 nov

Thanks[edit]

That was a quick request accepted so I appreciate. Lee Jaewon (Talk) 16:59, 11 November 2011 (UTC)

Page deletion[edit]

Hello Herby,

My page has been deleted for the second time now. First time I was given a link that had the same content as mine. I already confirmed that the link is mine. I'm the administrator of the Commradere magazine, and I have the copy rights to the article that I wanted to use in my Wikipedia Article. When I was writing the article, I planned to use it on my magazine as well as wikipedia.

I apologize for the inconvenience. I would appreciate it if you can kindly expelling the deletion of my article. I would be glad to learn from some of your suggestions.

Sincerely,

Ahsan "Ali" Khan

I delete many pages/images everyday - I have no idea which specific page you are on about. I need either your user name or the name of the page. Please de aware that text articles are not appropriate to Commons. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 08:44, 16 November 2011 (UTC)

Major Flickr review bot crash[edit]

As an Admin,

Can you ask other Admins to try to mark images in the flickr review needed category which is now very high at c.200+ images. I'm trusted but I'm busy on weekdays to mark images. Lymantria knows the situation as does MGA73 and Denniss...but it seems that no one else does and so, the backlog grows and grows. MGA told me Here he tried to contact Bryan but so far without success and the flickr bot only marks 1 image per hour. It has done this since November 11. I can only mark some images on weekdays, as I said. Maybe you can notify other Admins on a noticeboard somewhere...just this once please? Please help before the backlog gets out of control and uploaders start to complain. Thank You for your time, --Leoboudv (talk) 03:04, 17 November 2011 (UTC)

  • Update: I guess Denniss has helped to bring down the backlog but the flickrbot's performance is pitiful. 1 or 2 photos per hour? Even MGA73 has told me the problem must be fixed on his talkpage. --Leoboudv (talk) 07:10, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
    • Posted here - sorry short of time :(. Regards --Herby talk thyme 16:48, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
  • That's OK. Thanks for the help which you kindly gave. With kind Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 20:24, 17 November 2011 (UTC)

Galleries[edit]

Hey,

Shaldon and User:Nilfanion/Galleries may be of interest? I'd certainly appreciate any thoughts from you :)--Nilfanion (talk) 23:08, 19 November 2011 (UTC)

Thanks. Have a feeling my essay will probably be a case of TL;DR for most people here. I think the lack of interest in galleries is root cause of the problem, as we don't have that many users and they are much more interested in uploading and categorising. A good gallery is hard to create, took way too long to select that sample and Shaldon only has ~300 images (compared to thousands for more important subjects).
Still I think the end result adds significant value to Commons over the category, and its definitely nice to see a gallery that isn't spam :)--Nilfanion (talk) 09:57, 20 November 2011 (UTC)

Image Deletion[edit]

I uploaded a couple of photos on 11/30. Both are my own work - Neither should be a copyright violation.

One is below: 12:07, 30 November 2011 Herbythyme (talk | contribs) deleted "File:2010 Villanova Rollie Massimino Dk Blue.jpg" ‎ (Copyright violation) (global usage; delinker log)

This one had my name on it, would the image be acceptable if I removed my name from the photo. Or is it a copyright violation because of something in the photo?

I'm angry[edit]

It's not fair, what I have to do to be licensed?. You have me crazy, go for the vandalism, not people who are collaborating on Wikipedia.

Link placement on Commons[edit]

You have removed my link on the information about my image. As the manufacturer and owner of the photo I am sharing I would expect credit for my work.

How do I add an attribution "You must attribute the work in the manner specified by the author or licensor" that this product was manufactured by my company so it is not used in websites that will imply that this is their work (product). I already have competitors stealing images and blogs using them from my site and would like to offer the images but only with proper attribution, but not only as the owner of the image. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Canvasgirl (talk • contribs) 20:13, 26 December 2011 (UTC) (UTC)

You granted permission to reuse files with the attribution to Canvasgirl. A far as I see Wikimedia Commons is reusing your uploads under this requirement. Imposition of further requirements is not supported by the license, therefore you must not change the attribution requirement. This not limits your ability to publish your work elsewhere with different licenses or different attribution requirements. --Martin H. (talk) 22:23, 26 December 2011 (UTC)
Certainly your deletion request suggests to me that you only wished to contribute your images in order to promote the business you seem to be involved with.
While on Wikipedia you point to the fact that I have a link to a blog on my user page you should bear in mind I contributed many images to this project without any links and I still only have one link on my page despite the fact that I could place links on each of my images - my aim is to assist this project not promote my website. --Herby talk thyme 09:09, 27 December 2011 (UTC)

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year[edit]

Fae[edit]

Herby, I was curious as to why you changed your mind on Fae's RFA. Your comment "ho hum, leave it for now" - this is Wikipedia Review, they won't leave it alone, ever - they are a witchhunt if ever I saw one. They will do this whenever Fae comes up for RFA, now or ten years from now. -mattbuck (Talk) 10:26, 28 December 2011 (UTC)

Oh, btw, nice havenwotsits. -mattbuck (Talk) 10:27, 28 December 2011 (UTC)
Have nicewotsits yrself :)
I guess I am all drama'd out really. These days most of the folk who I knew and trusted have gone (with a few honourable exceptions). Some folk don't even reply to mails or whatever these days - nostalgia ain't what it used to be...
Hadn't realised it was the [[fill in appropriate expression]] folk from WR - almost makes me want to revert my change. However if there is that level of drama now it is just another step in the slide towards en wp style play where the arguments take precedence over the project (IMHO). My only consolation is trying to get answers out of en wp folk is far worse. Jaded maybe - apologies if that is appropriate. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 10:40, 28 December 2011 (UTC)
It does seem to be going that way. I've been in the trenches of the porn wars, trying to stop people with fatuous reasons (and fat heads) deleting high quality images on the rationale of OMGAPENIS... it's really wearing me down :/ -mattbuck (Talk) 10:48, 28 December 2011 (UTC)
Yeah I understand and sympathise (tho we are not quite on the same side!). In the end junk is junk and should be dealt with like that. However I would also argue that we do not need unlimited images of big ben or any other large upright objects that are out of focus, identical to every other one etc etc.
Maybe we should just hope 2012 is better for Commons I guess. Don't let it get you down too much - cheers --Herby talk thyme 10:58, 28 December 2011 (UTC)
Today, Commons shall not get me down, for my boyfriend is coming over and so I get cuddles. Hope you have a good new year too mate. -mattbuck (Talk) 11:01, 28 December 2011 (UTC)
Sounds good to me - enjoy :) --Herby talk thyme 11:09, 28 December 2011 (UTC)
