User:Herbythyme be recused from RFCU case against Pieter Kuiper[edit]

I am letting you know of this thread I just filed. -- とある白い猫 ちぃ? 16:19, 22 June 2012 (UTC)

Lovely - much appreciated - start a de-admin request please (given I haven't actually edited since I explained my position - so old history really). --Herby talk thyme 17:44, 22 June 2012 (UTC)
  • How is this helpful? -- とある白い猫 ちぃ? 00:05, 23 June 2012 (UTC)
    • As helpful as you posting a complaint about me regarding a page I've not edited since you originally suggested that I didn't do anything more on that page. It was already old news, it was an inappropriate posting as a "user problem" as there was no problem. Maybe not unusual for you however you must get a sense of perspective about this whole issue and that is not happening at present.
    • In case folk are watching/interested I still see that scanning 6*/16 ranges of IPs (~400,000 IPs) is a massive invasion of other people's privacy and is fishing. If there were any evidence of another account run by PK I would check and block it without a seconds hesitation as I would for any Commons user evading a block. Checking random dynamic IPs is not acceptable on such flimsy grounds. --Herby talk thyme 07:52, 23 June 2012 (UTC)

Layout suggestion[edit]

Hi, with regard to the page at Commons:Administrators'_noticeboard/User_problems/Pieter_Kuiper becoming an unreadable (and tedious) morass, do you think that moving your statement to the bottom of the page, and encourage any future personal position and clarification to be collected in the same place, might be helpful? A balance of voting options and a separated set of such individual opinions could be a neat balance to inform discussion without being quite so adversarial. Thanks -- (talk) 17:04, 26 June 2012 (UTC)

Do as you wish - the page was out of control long ago. --Herby talk thyme 17:31, 26 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi there[edit]

It's been a long time Herby. I popped by Commons to help someone at nowiki upload some stuff from Flickr - a quick glance at your talkpage here tells me not much has changed since I was active around here ;) Hope all is well, keep up the good work! Finn Rindahl (talk) 18:10, 26 June 2012 (UTC)

I would like to say Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose however sadly it is worse than that... --Herby talk thyme 14:31, 28 June 2012 (UTC)
Everything tends to get a poetical sound in French, but I think I understand what you mean. I am glad to see folks like yourself, Walter and AndreasFB still here though. Finn Rindahl (talk) 18:09, 28 June 2012 (UTC)

File:Yann M'Vila Euro 2012 vs Spain.JPG[edit]

Hi, I saw that you deleted File:Yann M'Vila Euro 2012 vs Spain.JPG for copyright violation, but, as for some other similar images taken from site (for example some in Category:Spain - France, 23 Jun 2012), there was a OTRS permission linked in the license (the one in {{}}). Since there's a permission it should not be copyright violation, is it possible to restore the image? Thanks in advance. --Simo82 (talk) 16:12, 27 June 2012 (UTC)

Apparently not from that site? Tagged with "© 2006-2012 Ltd "UMH Sport Live."" which was the basis I deleted on? --Herby talk thyme 16:22, 27 June 2012 (UTC)
It was taken from website: --Simo82 (talk) 15:51, 30 June 2012 (UTC)
OK - undeleted - make sure you put the right licensing on. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 16:34, 30 June 2012 (UTC)

File deletion slowness?[edit]

Hi. It's just me or deleting things here takes a lot of time? It takes several seconds since I press "delete" to the message that the page has been deleted to appear. Regards. --Marco Aurelio (disputatio) 22:55, 27 June 2012 (UTC)

Do you use Internet Explorer? At least when using IE, which is my standard browser (my bad) I have made the same experience since months. However, the deletion is actually performed the moment you click on DELETE. At that moment you can close the window or click to somewhere else; you don't need to wait til the new window for the deleted file appears. --Túrelio (talk) 06:36, 28 June 2012 (UTC)
It's been crap for ages with various "updates" to mw software. I've had "time outs" in the browser for some months now. FF (of course :)) and yes I agree with Túrelio - the window can be closed early. The weird thing is just how slowly "nuke" can work these days... --Herby talk thyme 07:50, 28 June 2012 (UTC)
Thanks to both. I use Firefox and I wondered because there's an issue open at Bugzilla regarding this. I've instaled yesterday an InstantDelete script which was giving me some errors but when using the normal deletion method it happened the same to me, even a couple of timeouts. Regards. --Marco Aurelio (disputatio) 11:48, 28 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi Herby, Tian227e is probably related to a group of spambots on en.wikipedia. I've requested a CU investigation at en:Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Tian220i. Could you take a look at the one on Commons? Best regards, Mathonius (talk) 11:14, 28 June 2012 (UTC)

Already checked on Commons and nothing else on that IP (or close) however it has the characteristics of a pattern account from a CU perspective - they may be trying a new range. --Herby talk thyme 11:22, 28 June 2012 (UTC)
CU list mailed too so the req on en wp might not stay there as long as some ;) --Herby talk thyme 11:27, 28 June 2012 (UTC)
Cool! Thanks a lot, Mathonius (talk) 12:45, 28 June 2012 (UTC)

What would you call this?[edit]

Cycle lane roundabout?
And what is this called in English?

Hi Herby, There is one of these located close to my home (yes, the image as such is terribly boring, but the construction is interesting). But what would you call such a thing in English? A cycle lane roundabout? There is also another term called bikeway. But what is the difference? Never easy to get these nuances right, when you are not a native speaker... If anyone wonders why we pay more in tax in Denmark than anyplace else in the world, constructions like these could give a clue (suffice it to say that the traffic density in this place is not overwhelming). --Slaunger (talk) 20:45, 2 July 2012 (UTC)

I did find the category Category:Roundabout cycle lanes, which may give a hint for the right terme to use, but the other photos there show cycle lanes integrated in a normal roundabout for cars. Is there any way sensible way in English to indicate that it is a "stand-alone" roundabout cycle lane? --Slaunger (talk) 21:07, 2 July 2012 (UTC)
Seems possible that the Danes are more advanced in their cycling than other parts of the world...:) I can't find any category etc that is better. Most UK cycle paths tend to be on old railway lines so the idea of junctions doesn't really occur. City centre lanes tend to be an afterthought so cycle dedicated roundabouts will be rare (though I suspect some exist). I certainly don't know another word to describe the feature. --Herby talk thyme 06:02, 3 July 2012 (UTC)
OK, Thanks Herby! --Slaunger (talk) 08:17, 3 July 2012 (UTC)

Hi Herby, I hope you can endure teaching in another another English lesson.Face-smile.svg Speaking of things for which I am uncertain about the correct English term for: What is such a small tower called for converting high voltage grid voltages to house-hold voltages (250 V AC in Denmark) using a transformer. In Danish we call it "transformatortårn" (transformer tower), but is that also what it is called in English? --Slaunger (talk) 13:42, 3 July 2012 (UTC)

I found this website called Wikipedia...;)
I think we are lazy and call them transformers however I guess they would also be referred to as substations (which probably have transformers in most of them). Something else is nagging at the back of my mind and if I remember what it is I will let you know. --Herby talk thyme 14:49, 3 July 2012 (UTC)
It's not a substation (same number of wires going out as there are going in... substations generally "break up" a transmission line into smaller transmission lines or service lines), but are you sure that's a transformer at all? It actually looks like a tower re-purposed as a utility pole. --SB_Johnny talk 17:16, 3 July 2012 (UTC)
I am pretty sure high voltage (probably 10 kV) goes in on the front (thus the high voltage insulators), and then converted to household voltages with same number of poles. Basically a transformer wrapped in bricks. The same kind of thing was installed at the countryside at my childhood place in Denmark. There the transformer was just free standing integrated in a lattice mast, and not integrated into a brick structure (but thanks for the interest). --Slaunger (talk) 17:22, 3 July 2012 (UTC)

Investigating a file deletion[edit]

Hi. Back in 2009, you were the admin who deleted what was, as best I can tell, the audio version of a Wikinews article from 2008. I honestly have no idea why this was deleted, and the deletion log entry hasn't helped me understand (it seems very strange that the audio version of a Wikinews article, created by an apparently reputable Wikinewsie, would have been "promotional"). Can you shed any light on this?

--Pi zero (talk) 17:31, 3 July 2012 (UTC)

Wow - my bad definitely (but it was a looong time ago!). Some passing IP had put a load of crap on the file page & I didn't take as much care as I should have. Apologies and undeleted. --Herby talk thyme 17:37, 3 July 2012 (UTC)
Thanks! :-)  --Pi zero (talk) 17:43, 3 July 2012 (UTC)

Hi Herby, I came across Tian389i (talk · contribs) and I've blocked it (see here for related accounts). Could you please take a look? Mathonius (talk) 03:15, 4 July 2012 (UTC)

Yep - can almost set your clock by that bot account creator... Blocked a puppet account and have now blocked a rather large range which I dislike but has only bad accounts on (I'd blocked a section of the range yesterday but these two where just outside it!). Cheers --Herby talk thyme 05:47, 4 July 2012 (UTC)

Herby, I have the feeling that User:Takabeg could be an excellent administrator who seems to know most languages around Turkey, an area that is hardly covered by administrators. --Foroa (talk) 08:14, 5 July 2012 (UTC)

deleted image[edit]

You deleted an image I uploaded, which is fine, but I currently represent said artist in Sweden. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chantillyone (talk • contribs)

To be accurate I did not delete the image but I marked it for consideration by another admin who did delete it. The only way that we can host an image of an album cover will be if the record company freely license it via COM:OTRS I'm afraid. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 06:46, 6 July 2012 (UTC)

NP. It's a massive record company that doesn't always even know who is in their catalogue I'm afraid, though if that image is here or not isn't that important./Maria

I don't use multiple accounts and I have no idea what you could possibly mean by "abusing". I live in an area that requires the use of a VPN which results in multiple IPs. Please resolve this immediately.

You seem to think this is funny - It's not. Like I said, I use a VPN to access this website, so you will be maliciously blocking IP's forever if that is your attitude. Your time would be better spent resolving this problem, not making it worse. -- 03:53, 11 July 2012 (UTC)
Apologies - I have replied on your talk page (after being away for a couple of day). The block was incorrect and resulted from the use of an abused IP. --Herby talk thyme 05:47, 11 July 2012 (UTC)

Can you check if File:Ranimaria11.jpg is the same as the deleted file File:Rani maria 01.jpg uploaded by the same user? It might be a derivative of the same file with the background edited out. When comparing this image with the image in the source tag of the deleted image, the pose matches up. If it isn't a copyright violation, it does have a questionable license. Thank you. -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 06:10, 9 August 2012 (UTC)

In regard to the deletion of image on Tara Strong[edit]

(Moved here from above) Because deleted my page Rede Pantanal? I just put a logo and picture of my (creator), my central page with the list of pages in Facebook and some of the MANY OTHER sites I have! I'm famous in my country enough to not need Wikipedia to self-promote myself, I'm a journalist, writer, historian, heraldist and other many activities and have hundreds of interviews on TV and thousands of articles in newspapers. I'm a big contributor of Wikipedia for many years, with other profiles that lost access or use not more, on several issues as some that can be seen on the pages I created recently "Ladário_(Sátão)" and "Pelourinho do Ladário" (see links in thereof). What was the problem? It includes a PARTIAL list of my sites? I'll remake and just put my corporate page on Facebook and the website of my company. I leave my vehement protest registered by your attitude! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rede Pantanal (talk • contribs)

Neither Wikipedia, nor Commons, are intended for self-promotion. In particular, Commons is a repository for copyright-free media, and not articles about anything, and (although I can't see it) I believe your page here was properly deleted. Thanks. Rodhullandemu (talk) 00:29, 10 September 2012 (UTC)

Yes - your page consisting almost solely of links with the phrase um sistema formado por sites is simply promotional and so an abuse of Foundation webspace. Do use facebook etc - however do not use Foundation sites - that is not what they are for. --Herby talk thyme 07:25, 10 September 2012 (UTC)

Question about a blocked editor[edit]

Hello Herbythyme,
You blocked User:Rodwinoloresisimo for "Abusing multiple accounts". Which other account(s)? I don't for a moment doubt that it was a good block, but alas I'm not very familiar with commons - I mostly work on en.wikipedia. I came here to propose deletion of some of Rodwinoloresisimo's uploads after dealing with what seemed to be deceptive editing outside of commons. If they used a different account here, maybe it might be a key to finding other deception elsewhere. (For instance, a sock used on enwiki for more promotional editing). Maybe there's another page where the block or sockpuppetry was mentioned, but [2] sheds no light on it.
Thanks for your time! bobrayner (talk) 18:08, 21 September 2012 (UTC)

This user uploaded copyright violations under multiple identities and originates from an IP address that has a number of similar users on it. My recollection is the abuse is also on en wp and that I informed en wp CUs of the issue. Personally I imagine it is an SEO organisation or similar.
No posts anywhere on here as I tend to deal with CU issues without any drama if possible!
Away until early Nov (I think) but will respond when I can. Hope that helps. Regards --Herby talk thyme 12:37, 9 October 2012 (UTC)

Puppet account Jermboy[edit]

Hello. Same question about User talk:Jermboyfarish, whose other account User talk:Jermboyfarish11 has been blocked later. Without knowing how the user had abused accounts before, I wonder if he's been forgetting his password. --AVRS (talk) 10:31, 22 September 2012 (UTC)

Merci beaucoup. I first created the pseudo I use for years on the net: Qmmfqjopz. Vous l'avez bloqué et j'ai donc créé le compte Qmfqjopz avec une autre IP pour pouvoir vous répondre. But too slowly and you blocked this second account too. Then I created the third account Qmffqjopz with a third IP and could finally answer. You have unblocked the first one, but the second IP is still blocked and my friend is unable to use his own connection! So you should unlock them too. Thank you. --Qmmfqjopz (talk) 21:09, 2 November 2012 (UTC)
The problem should be eliminated now. However please confine yourself to using one account only.
Your image which you uploaded may well have its licensing reviewed if it is a screenshot of a television program as seems the case with its use on fr wp. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 21:20, 2 November 2012 (UTC)
For years my only account has ever been Qmmfqjopz and it has now been migrated to the unified login system of the Wikimedia Foundation. I was obliged to create the other accounts to be able to write on this page! Please delete them now, since I don't have permissions to do so by myself.
Please look at the page Bonne nuit les petits, and tell me what kind of image should replace mine in such a situation. --Qmmfqjopz (talk) 03:42, 3 November 2012 (UTC)
Stick with the unified account then - it will be easier for you. It is not possible to delete accounts. When I get the time I'll look at the image properly. Regards --Herby talk thyme 08:00, 3 November 2012 (UTC)

Regarding editing restrictions[edit]

On commons, am I allowed to edit whilst logged out? (I know this is a silly question, but I'm checking whether any editing restrictions against me prohibit me from doing so.) Kiko4564 (talk) 16:37, 3 November 2012 (UTC)

I guess it depends what you are doing really. There is no real issue with editing as an IP however if you are effectively pretending to be someone else by using an IP and your user account that would be wrong. Probably best to be logged in as a general rule - not sure what you gain otherwise. Regards --Herby talk thyme 16:56, 3 November 2012 (UTC)
