Commons:Requests for checkuser/Case/Satesclop[edit]

I already checked this yesterday as per a cross wiki request. Is there anything new? Yann 17:29, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

Hello Herby, obviously Aperamo has a connection with him, it is the same type of contributions. The user has admitted to have created many different accounts and threatened to keep on creating new ones to upload images which will probably be copyvios as well. So, any help is welcome, the work to watch so many sockpuppets is becoming overwhelming. Thank you. Cheers. Anna 20:27, 19 November 2007 (UTC)
Ok Herby, if you can do it, please let me know the results as soon as you have them to delete the contributions of them all, at least the photos, I'm afraid they are all copyvios. Maybe you could help me on that, it is going to be a lot of work. Thank you for your help. Anna 20:08, 24 November 2007 (UTC)
Ok got bored waiting for Yann so it is being worked on. However it may be a little larger than the "request" suggests. You'll hear more from me soon, apologies for delay --Herby talk thyme 13:32, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
Thank you for taking charge of this. Anna 21:02, 2 December 2007 (UTC)
Hi Herbythyme, is this task going on? I think that most of the sockpuppets have been blocked here and I personally took care of it in the Spanish Wikipedia but further news would be nice. Many thanks in advance. --Ecemaml (talk to me/habla conmigo) 15:23, 10 December 2007 (UTC)
Well Drini has now had mail and so far nothing else has been heard, sorry --Herby talk thyme 12:34, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

The discussion here may be a little more productive now! Let me know if you think I can help at all. Regards --Herby talk thyme 09:02, 22 November 2007 (UTC)

Great hunt :-) Thank you for help!
Thinking about long-term perspective - we need dedicated maintainer(s) of this area. Preferable with medical background. Just for avoiding to turn Commons into trash dump...

Help on file upload[edit]

Hi Herby. You were good enough to leave some helpful comments on my Talk page last month, and offered further help if I needed it. So... could you cast your eye over Image:Talaria.svg which I've just uploaded and let me know if there's anything I've omitted or done wrong, please. It's my first attempt at converting a graphic to svg format and also the first time I've uploaded anything in the public domain. In particular, I'm not sure whether the Date entry in the Summary should be the date of the original, or of my conversion. Thanks! --Smalljim 11:56, 23 November 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the help. I've changed the date and uploaded a similar graphic, Image:Tartane.gif, tagged with the original date, too. It think it does make more sense, because even if I did put some artistic work into the conversion, I couldn't claim any copyright on it, because I've put it on here. So I guess the Date field is really used as confirmation that it's PD.
I've found that the most time-consuming thing is locating reasonable categories, but I can see the point in doing it. That tool you pointed me at is useful, and I've just found CommonSense too. That reminds me, I haven't categorized that little ship yet... I may pester you some more yet - thanks again. --Smalljim 16:33, 24 November 2007 (UTC)
Yes, I'd agree that any categorisation should be done at the most specific level but that's what takes the time - I suppose it gets quicker with practice. It's the same on WP, isn't it? Congrats on passing your recent AfD over there, by the way - 'til I read that, I had no idea you were so busy!
I've been interested in Dartmoor for many years too, since before I moved down here. I used to pore over the 1" OS Tourist Map and wonder what places with evocative names like Cater's Beam and Skir Hill really looked like. Now I know - they're lumpy and wet :-) I'm no expert, but over time I've accumulated a small collection of books about South Devon and I'm now enjoying putting the information they contain to some practical use. I've been wondering whether to treat myself to a copy of Dines for Christmas; I've hankered after that one for ages. Cheers, Smalljim 15:53, 25 November 2007 (UTC)
Yes, Hemery is another must-have, one day. I'm sure there's a lot of scope for photographing industrial remains on the moor to illustrate articles on WP, and I think a good day in late winter is the best time to do that because the vegetation (especially the dreaded bracken) isn't so profuse. Back to wiki stuff - I've been working on a panoramic photo of Teignmouth taken from the Ness (will upload soon), and am wondering whether to add text and arrows to point out the features that are mentioned in the text. But I think I remember seeing somewhere that adding descriptive text to images isn't recommended on Commons because it limits the re-use (not everyone in the world speaks English). It sounds sensible, but is this right? I've had a search around here, but haven't found any guidance yet. If you don't know straight off, I'll ask at the VP. Cheers, Smalljim 00:28, 10 December 2007 (UTC)

RfA comments[edit]

I'm intrigued. Do you accept my justification? Equally will you be looking for a new hobby soon? I think I'll assume that there cannot be too many people with the same broadband supplier in the UK who would take such an interest in my contributions? Now that would be amusing :) 13:12, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

Herby - obviously what you need to do is write up a grid of options which you tick off as you go, when commenting about RfA candidates. This should be on public display somewhere so that we can all frequently refer to it, especially on long boring nights between television programs. The fact that you are human and may have different feelings about different people should absolutely not factor into your RfA responses. :P Take care, ~ Riana 23:20, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

Rename user changes[edit]

See this rename ... the links in the text (for the blocks) did not work because the user name has a space in it. I was looking at parserfunctions but i'm not sure they work in that context. Need to think. Maybe suggest that people enter the name with underscores in it already? I put a link to the page itself in, ala how we do makesysop. Probably should change meta too. ++Lar: t/c 19:25, 9 December 2007 (UTC)

Ex-Levellers link removed from the Levellers Wiki page[edit]

Hi Herby, hope all is well with you.

I recently updated the Levellers Wiki page with some relevant info (My name is Alan Miles, I am an original member and songwriter of the Levellers). I co-wrote their first Gold selling LP and the 'Liberty Song' from their Platinum selling LP. I added a link to Alan Miles' myspace for people to research and link to what I am presently doing musically. This was deleted by you because you believe it is not relevant to the Levellers Wiki page - I beg to differ... I believe being able to research original members of bands and researching their musical history-tree very relevant to what Wikipedia (and research) is all about. Being able to follow a research trail that documents past and present relevant music and links when studying popular music is interesting and vital I believe.

Thanks for your understanding. The preceding unsigned comment was added by (talk • contribs) at 15:14, 10 Dec 2007 (UTC)

Images of proteins[edit]

Thank you very much for the warning. Did you mean deletion of all protein images that I have loaded or just a few of them? I wanted to provide the images mostly for Wikipedia articles, such that [1]. There are many hundreds of articles in Wikipedia that use protein images. I could download them individually to Wikipedia, but it was recommended to store the images here, which would simplify their use. Before doing this, I consulted with the current content of Wikimedia and found that you have the category of protein images: [2]. So, my images belong to that category. So, what is the reason for treating my images differently? If you still believe they do not belong here, could you please consider them at a proper deletion discussion forum? I am hot quite familiar with you deletion process however. So, I would highly appreciate your help and advice. Thank you. Sincerely,Andrei Lomize 14:48, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

In the event that all files should be deleted, could you please advice me how to transfer them all together to wikipedia, since uploading them individually would take a lot of time?Andrei Lomize 14:57, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

According to the message in the Admin board and the provided links it seems as if it's only a malicious user squatting an old user name in en.wikipedia in order to mess up. I didn't think it would require other measure as an indefinite blocking since it was created with purposes not related to constructive work in commons. Maybe I've precipitated. If so, please, raise the block and sorry. I just wanted to avoid further problems. Best regards --Ecemaml (talk to me/habla conmigo) 15:21, 20 December 2007 (UTC)

Hey Herby, I noticed you added a entry to MediaWiki:Deletereason-dropdown. Isn't that a little redundant to "External links/spam"? I didn't change anything yet - thinking maybe you had something else in mind. Cheers, Rocket000 09:58, 22 December 2007 (UTC)

That works for me. Thanks, Rocket000
Well, we could go with en.WP's CSD I2: "Corrupt or empty image". This would cover both missing and broken files (tends to happen with SVGs a lot). What do you think? Rocket000 10:39, 22 December 2007 (UTC)
Wait. There is no drop down menu when deleting images. :( So I guess there's no point in having the "corrupt image" option, and I can't remember, but do you get a menu in the image namespace if there wasn't *any* file uploaded? Rocket000 10:54, 22 December 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, today is the first time I really started exploring that namespace. It's still a little foreign to me. One of those blank defaults could be the image deletion dropdown. I wish there was documentation somewhere (and a Mediawiki sandbox). Maybe I'll compare ours with en.WP's. I'm sure they're using a lot less defaults. Well, I'm gonna keep exploring; I'll let you know if I find anything interesting. Cheers, Rocket000 11:30, 22 December 2007 (UTC)

another plea[edit]

Dear Herby, I asked for protection in the edit summary, but I doubt anyone will notice it.
The reason for protecting Image:Imagem-Wiki.png is that it is the used logo in the upper left corner on pt.wikinews, any changes done to the logo will be shown on pt.wikinews in the upper left corner. It should therefore only be changed in accordance with the pt.wikinews community.

Dear Herby, I was searching for something like this on Commons, but I could not find it implemented here (please point me to the template if I had overseen it). On de.wikt or it works fine. See wikt:de:Benutzer:Spacebirdy/test (right under "Schwesternprojekte") for example. It creates interwikilinks to other projects in the left navigation, what can be quite useful imho.

You can find the code here (below the headline: "// Interprojekt-Links (Bug 708)")

Hi Herby, @interprojectlinks: I first tried here in the personal monobook.js, it is driving me crazy because it is acting strange.

But I tried on is.wikt, (see wikt:is:Notandi:Spacebirdy/test, works(link is to be found under Systurverkefni) fine) The code: User:Spacebirdy/common.js should be added to MediaWiki:Common.js, then we need Templates like Template:InterProject and the follow ups for each project: eg. Meta: Template:InterProject/Meta and so on, I can create them if You wish but maybe I probably can't do that now but will do it in the night.

Then adding the code:

*{{InterProject/Meta|Link(optional)|LinkText(also optional)}}

will create the links (should :) )

@the two similar images: as far as I can see there is no consensus how to proceed there now :(

Best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 15:27, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

InterProject links[edit]

This edit to Common.js went wrong: "$" not defined. Lupo 10:32, 25 January 2008 (UTC)

Just replace "$" by "document.getElementById". (And once it works, uncomment the addOnLoadHook. But please test it locally first by adding the addOnLoadHook to your monobook.js while you're still testing.) But I don't quite get what it's supposed to do. Apparently, if there's a (hidden) element "interProject", its contents are moved to a new div which then appears in the "toolbox" portlet. Why can't the server not set it up there in the first place, so that one needed only toggle the visibility? Who originally generates that "interProject" element? Lupo 11:09, 25 January 2008 (UTC)
Hi Lupo, please see bugzilla:708, its for interproject links (the code works on de.wikt and is.wikt) and Template:InterProject (Template:InterProject/Meta etc.) will use it. Thanks for Your help, best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 11:17, 25 January 2008 (UTC)

High quality[edit]

Hi :-) The quality of work in all your jobs is very high and want to make sure it stays that way. Once you get Oversight access and see what the actual need is going to be, I hope you will recruit some more users to help. While I can see the usefulness of having the pair, I don't think having CU access is needed as I did not have CU access for most of last year and regularly did oversight on Wikipedia English. FloNight♥♥♥ 17:22, 28 January 2008 (UTC)

Finding other users for available roles is not easy. I continue to try. You may have seen the note about the idea of logging the use of Oversight in the sense of giving a brief idea of how it has been used - worthwhile - there is a sense in which it would allow some transparency? --Herby talk thyme 17:52, 28 January 2008 (UTC)

Congratulations with your promotion :) Let's hope it is actually seldom needed ;) -- Bryan (talk to me) 20:34, 29 January 2008 (UTC)

Oh my God, I cannot understand where I have read that you were also a bureaucrat xD Maybe I've thought that if you are sysop, checkuser and Oversight you must be also a buro :-) Sorry for the mistake, bye, :-) --FilnikRock! 15:36, 30 January 2008 (UTC)

Hi Herby, please change the link there to Commons:SisterProjects (something like this m:Meta:SisterProjects should be created then) in the monobook: -> a href="/wiki/Meta:SisterProjects" should be a href="/wiki/Commons:SisterProjects".

Then the MediaWiki:Sisterprojects pages should be created, if MediaWiki:Sisterprojects exists the text from there will be used, even if someone has chosen another language in the prefs, but it can be applied:

For other languages we will have to ask or being approached :)

I am creating the templates, thanks for Your help :)

Best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 20:58, 30 January 2008 (UTC)

I finished in creating the templates, everything works fine User:Spacebirdy/prófun (only the link needs to be corrected).
I am not sure if that category Category:Commons:InterProject is ok and if it is categorized right, can You check please.

That IP appears to have moved off Wikimedia projects, now seems to be attacking my wiki instead. At least it's in a place where I can see it.

See here for the IP's block history.

Thanks, --Solumeiras 12:57, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

Yes a troublesome IP at best - hope you manage to keep it under control - thanks --Herby talk thyme 13:01, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
  • I suppose it's good they're not attacking Wikimedia wikis now... anyway, it's listed at en:w:Wikipedia:WikiProject on open proxies. Maybe we should reduce the block, considering the IP's shared, and there is a legitimate user on it (he already edits my wiki from that IP). Glad to see you around, and hopefully I'll contribute some images soon (when I get my damned digital camera fixed...) Thanks, --Solumeiras 14:01, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
I think with the indef block on en wp & recent background info any reduction is highly unlikely - it has a very bad history. I would strongly resist any reduction of the blocks --Herby talk thyme 14:12, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
  • The indef block got cut to 3 years by another admin... but I suppose some shared IPs have a bad history. --Solumeiras 14:14, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

Canadian Coat of Arms[edit]

Hello, I was wondering if you could look into the copyright violation at Image:Armoiries du canada.svg. The anonymous editor who removed the tag, has also been active at various different language Wikipedias, adding the image from Commons. Over the past day, it has been added to the Finnish, and (da, I don't know what language that is) Wikipedias. I believe it would be deleted earlier, it will be easier to fix the problem on various wikipedias. Regards, -- Jeff3000 16:38, 17 February 2008 (UTC)

Socks for dinner?[edit]

Did you eat some socks for dinner or was that breakfast? -- carol 09:25, 4 March 2008 (UTC)

This was the eventual reaction that I had to this. I looked at your user page to try to determine what sort of reaction I should have to that before writing that sentence. There is an infobox about sockpuppets and I felt that the reason I was here was related.
As much as you would enjoy explaining the situation here, you should. If you would not enjoy it, then don't. I am not comfortable with people just crossing out others votes -- but I am also not comfortable with sockpuppets who vote and change the outcome. Sockpuppets who are strutting and not changing the outcome is somewhat entertaining. Personally, I was just glad that the whole thing happened without me and remains as it ended uncontested.
It was the reason I had your user page on watch also. If you would like me to stop watching, I will. I was just trying to clean up QI.... -- carol 14:24, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
Ok.. - not certain I fully understand you (& what sort of comment you are making) but I'll take a stab. I got an email asking me to look into the relationship between voters on that QI one. The email came from someone I respect a good deal. There was enough about the "look" of the vote to make me happy with running CU. There was a distinct connection between the uploader & two of the voters.
Vandalism (& related CU activity) I deal with & inform my fellow CUs to keep them in the loop. When I'm not certain I happily seek advice. I did & the consensus was to do as I did and - for now - leave the accounts unblocked.
Hopefully that helps however I consider any and all of my actions to be open to scrutiny by others so if you feel I could explain anything anytime I'd like to think I would be able to give any info I can (equally my email is open to people).
To me the community granted me CU rights to use at my discretion and use them I do. Doing this informally means that (just don't tell Larry!) - unlike en wp - if there is nothing there, that is that, no harm done etc, I forget quickly! QI is an area that we have found suspect voting in the past so if you feel anything needs looking at feel free to let me know.
I hope I "read" this right? Apologies for not dealing with this one sooner - real life has been rather "interesting" & I must have missed it on a quick trawl, not my usual standard. Equally you are welcome to watch my talk page though requests on it are rare! Thanks for the work you do on Commons carol, regards --Herby talk thyme 15:01, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
Heh, nice write, thank you! What is CU? And since I reverted the changes that were made here, I have been having fond memories of my first revert -- I suspect that nothing will ever best this. Actually, I don't suspect sockpuppetry as much as I suspect nick exchanges, and that is not illegal I think. (Also, I got much more of an answer than I expected, thanks for that and for knowing so quickly what you are doing here.) -- carol 15:27, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
Terrible isn't it how we "assume" people know things! I guess I look on you as quite an experienced editor having seen the name around a while :). There is a sense in which it saddens me that I am now like that, people doing that used to bug me when I first started - effective communication is so important.
Checkuser (CU) allows a small bunch of us here on Commons (basically Lar, Bryan, Bastique & I) to get the IP of a registered user. Unlike en wp these rights are granted after direct election by the community and are I guess regarded as "trusted" positions. For me they are frequently about dealing with vandals who often use Open Proxies to vandalise from - it's like swatting flies - when you get your eye in it's easy :) However the also allow us to look for puppets if someone sees an issue that concerns them. Whether the puppets are one user with multiple accounts or multiple users who are being "encouraged" by someone is a bit academic to me - it is the effect that is the issue (distortion of voting in this case). Equally (& with lots of good faith) these two accounts which I crossed through the votes of had really only edited on that QI vote really so I probably reckon it is the one person behind it. Hopefully they will realise that it really isn't worth it & get on with constructive contributions.
Thanks & regards --Herby talk thyme 16:05, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

Voting on Featured pictures[edit]

Yes, those are my friends. I thought it wasn't against the rules (still can't find anything about it there). I'm not quite sure about the timing but we're using the same connection "internet lab". so, what if they have strong connections with me? I still believe it's not against the rules!!(please enlighten me about on this point). "f that causes an outcome of a picture that does not reflect the community as a whole then that would be seen as unfair." sorry, but what i have seen wasn't a "community". I'd call it a "lobby". Seems reasonable to me! The Britain/UK discussion is the usual one about whether NI is included within Archaeology of the UK or of Ireland, or of both - and of course whether one includes the IoM and CI with Britain or excludes them with UK. Personally, I'm not one of the sticklers who insist that everything must be categorised politically, rather than geographically where appropriate. Man vyi 12:35, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

Hi. I am having a problem and I don't know what my options are, perhaps you can help?

I found and categorized many images for articles I am writing on English Wikipedia. It is about a genus of flower -- since eh, they started to use latin names for flower species several hundred years ago, the names change somewhat often. This name changing causes the information about the genus to be found under several different names.

The situation that I am having right now is 1) incredibly stupid and infantile and 2)anti-productive and 3)not utilizing the wikisoftware to promote information (as opposed to the religious nature that several of the schools of botany have become).

I have one user, which would be like a one person special interest group, changing all of the categories I have made for this genus of plant -- instead of contributing by adding new category for the other names. An example, Senecio jacobaea has had this name and also has been renamed Jacobaea vulgaris and other names as well. The software allows the image to be categorized with both names which would be truly and honestly informative but the special interest user seems to not understand this nature of the software or it is not in the users special interest or whatever the reason for not using both names but instead preferring one name over the other (religous-like).

It is a great example of this perhaps, but very annoying and wrong here -- and that is my opinion. Can you help or tell me what my options are? -- carol 16:47, 17 March 2008 (UTC)

Ouch. Arguably my least favourite part of Commons (& certainly one of the most troublesome).
Suggestions - discussion with the user. Pointers to anywhere that has good solid information (bearing in mind that Wikipedia sometimes is not perfect!).
Then I would look into ToL and see if you can get a good discussion going there with others who are also knowledgeable.
Normally I would say I would help where I can but really my expertise in that field is close to zero. You might try Johnny out - he knows a lot more than I do but he is not that active here at present (sadly).
I've been working on some cats in the past few days & now dread the orange bar with "that isn't the way it should be done" type messages :) For me it is simpler because there is no real schema that has to be followed. Hope that helps to some degree - regards --Herby talk thyme 17:41, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
So, the way it works is that I can destroy the work of others and perhaps be protected (because of the rules or lack of them) but there is no way to protect the work that I have done? -- carol 18:06, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
You are fairly "wiki" experienced Carol. So - that is what it is - a wiki. You have no "right" to the work you do. All the work I have done today in terms of creating categories & placing media in them can be reverted by anyone anytime - it is not my "work". I hope they would talk it through with me, I hope we would be able to agree with one another - however if we did a third person could come along & change it again - sorry that is just the way it is.
Please do not let that stop you from real constructive dialogue on the subject - try & find the "light" in the discussion rather than the "heat".
Please work on finding a solution to your differences Carol - the work you do is good & appreciated but we do need to work collaboratively here. Get back to me if you want to - regards --Herby talk thyme 19:12, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
Solutions are found often among the options; I was looking into mine. It is an interesting thing/atmosphere where work and research can be undone very easily and the prevention of this is not so easy. It is like a public park, isn't it? With a few exceptions. All of my life, I walk (or drive past) public parks where private parties are occurring. It is obvious that it is a party for a few select people and easy to know not to join the party. If I were in the park and there was a big sign over the party area that said 'Public Welcome to attend', I might consider joining or not -- that would be the message. I could stomp all over the garden plots or destroy the play equipment -- but that is probably wrong and there should be some rules about this somewhere. Once, I got caught writing my name into some wet cement that was going to be the curb of the street where I was living. I was seven or eight years old and one of the people putting the street in came and told me that I shouldn't do this. It made sense, I felt badly because I was caught and the man telling me this was obviously my superior. I think that all of these things need to be in place for a reprimand to be successful, no matter what the age. Tree of Life games should not be played here. All of the names can be used, especially since the software allows it. It is an international media storage location, open to the public so all the names should be used. And private parties should not have 'open to the public' signs on them.
My previous wiki experience was not so hateful, aggressive and petty. I did have the feeling that my computer was being hacked by the hacker that I was not finding 'work' for though -- that was creepy more than hateful, aggressive and petty. Also, I would rather not block people who make nice things here -- I just want them to stop undoing what I was doing is all. Thanks for your time and things to think about. -- carol 20:34, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
I do understand what you are saying Carol. I would argue that "my" way of organising what I am doing is the best but I'm guessing there will be people out there who do not agree with me. However I am working with areas that are not as definite as the one you are working in. I would have thought that reference to quality external sources should resolve the issue ok?
There is no doubt that working on Wiki can be a trial (& I understand your "public party" view). I confess I escaped en wp because I find the tensions there unacceptable to me. Mostly I find Commons a good place to be with helpful people around. However from time to time something of a break may be useful for me I know. To me blocks are really something for people who have no constructive contribution at all - others I would rather work with & take a time over (or indeed walk away if it is too frustrating).
Take a step back, reflect, work on something else for a bit if it is getting to you but do keep at it please, thanks & regards --Herby talk thyme 12:58, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
