Tenganan category[edit]

Hello,
I don't understand this modification. Tenganan is a village of course, but there is no category for "Village in Indonesia" so "Cities in Indonesia" seems a good category.

Transwiki[edit]

Hi, if you are moving files to commons like you did here it is important to pay attention to the gfdl, which requires a history of revisions. I completed your upload, but please be more careful in future. If you are from france you may find further informations in the french wikipedia: Images which are no on commons will be listed under Catégorie:Désormais sur Commons, there are some hints. You may also use Commons-helper, who helps you generating the description pages. --Martin H. (talk) 09:30, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

You did several uploads in the past which needs correction, please help. --Martin H. (talk) 10:07, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
Answer: See for example the difference on image Locator jambi.png (EXAMPLE). The main problem was, to find the original upload on the id.wikipedia (my Indonesian is a bit rusty these days ;) ), so it is very helpful, if you figure out the original imagenames and pages and link them in the information field (e.g.: source=[http://id.id.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berkas:...), so it is better to see, where the image comes from.
The gdfl requires the complete upload history (see example), the information is not lost if the image is originaly deletet on id.wiki, if the origin of the file is known. Thanks for your help. --Martin H. (talk) 17:40, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

halo Humboldt, not image from id.wikipedia appropriate uploaded to commons. mungkin anda bisa melihat beberapa contoh gambar berikut ini :

Hello, Humboldt!

Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations"). Pro-tip: The CommonSense tool can help you find the best category for your image.

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Kings?[edit]

I have never seen the Yogya or Solo rulers/royalty ever called kings - was the category for simplicity? I think a qualifier needs to be put that they were never called by that usage - would you agree with that? SatuSuro (talk) 04:50, 20 March 2010 (UTC)

Bringing text over - your mutiple identity is very confusing

if you read for instance A History of Modern Indonesia since c. 1300 by M. C. Ricklefs (ISBN 0-8047-2195-5) of the Australian National University, who is considered as one of the most respected historians on Indonesia,

I should know he, if he hasnt thrown the towel, is based in Singapore now and he read my attempt at a thesis about a royal graveyard (sic) and didnt like it - my life was taken up for 10 years plus thinking about sultans/susuhunans as rulers and never kings - apart from having had communciations with him over years - I also did his bio stub on wp en.

you will see that he calls entities like Pajang, Mataram, Surakarta and Yogyakarta "kingdoms" and their rulers (as a logical linguistic consequence) "kings".

Convenience for english speakers

In Indonesia, we say they are "raja", of which the closest translation into English is "king".

menurut pendapat orang translator - I would never use king - and my first supervisor ahli Jawa agreed ruler is far more appropriate

So I can't agree with you.

Thats fine - we are here to try to resolve issues, and as I say my ahli jawa always advised ruler as being far more appropriate specially for Mataram and Yogya and Solo polity.

"King" is a general term to designate the ruler of a polity called "kingdom". The kings are Surakarta bear the title of Susuhunan, which is untranslatable into English. Those of Yogyakarta bear the title of "sultan", which has been adopted by the English language. But both are titles born by kings

I cannot agree with you - as I would always, after spending ten years + utilising the horrible orang belanda translations of the Javanese cultural world, and having lived and listened to the conversations amongst juru kunci at my royal gravesite will always defer to 'ruler' - so there we have it.

Cheers and thanks for your response - I am not going to actually change anything - but, but If I add any text where I come across usage as saying that the term 'king' I will probably parenthetically add that 'ruler' is far more appropriate.

Just in case you want to haul out the usual kamus definitions of the use of raja - please dont bother - they lack any sense of etymological depth or any sense of where things come from or the variances of usage in time or in space - I simply am claiming that to ascertain from any one source as a definitive usage simply doesnt carry any weight with me - specially when we start looking at basa jawa - indonesian word play. At the point we hunt down Revo or readup Romo Zoet's work - for some third opinions :) SatuSuro (talk) 10:11, 20 March 2010 (UTC)

I do hope I am not misunderstood here - I am not trying to ask you to change it - or to change it - I was very keen to get your reasoning for the usage - and I appreciate you using a specific text and offering your interpretation. I hadnt outlined my experience dealing with usages during my internship in Central Java of some 15 years ago - and would not expect you to know - but hey I am extra cautious when making a claim to authority over meaning, so it was good to get your side. Cheers SatuSuro (talk) 10:44, 20 March 2010 (UTC)

Thank you so much for your understanding response - and thanks for taking the time to respond - I really appreciate it - yes I think really in the end we might thinking about living with a stange combination of 'kingdom' and 'ruler' - if we can live with that - a very strange mix but I tend to remember hearing of the late Pangeran Diponegoro who is allegedly said the earlier version of Bahasa Indonesia was the language of the chooks (ayam) - and the Javanese terms might in fact be of more assistance - but the terms can be even more ambiguous to those not familiar with Javanese culture. I suggest we leave the categories as they are - and perhaps over time that when the Tropenmuseum material is slowly pulled into shape we will have some further need to refine categories with appropriate terms, and perhaps scratch our heads again as to what would Diponegoro say? or even more esoterically what would have alm Romo Zoetmulder have said of the terms... SatuSuro (talk) 13:46, 20 March 2010 (UTC)

Somehow I have ended up answering the last comment by gnangarra at my own talk page :( - it is stirring a lot of memories - might need a day or two to think through all the issues - sorry to have invaded your talk page so extensively - thanks for your good faith response to my extended discussion - I will get back to you on this all - cheers SatuSuro (talk) 13:58, 20 March 2010 (UTC)

Categories[edit]

I think we might need a conversation at some point about categories - I am in the process of pruning by hot cat from various central java temples - categories that I fee a re grandparent cats sitting with grandchildren cats. You are most welcome to revert any of my changes if you find that I have contravened the intent of COM:OVERCAT or COM:C - cheers SatuSuro (talk) 01:26, 26 March 2010 (UTC)

Nah - by now it is no big deal the categories are being cleaned up by other editors bots anyway - although there have been arguments that Borobudur may have started as a hindu structure, and evolved into a buddhist - when I find old dutch photos with 'hindu monument' for borobudur I dont believe them. As far as I know all central javanese temples have been found with distinct sculptures that give the id clearly ( b or h) - as for other parts of java/indonesia I havent investigated enough - thanks for your response - and my we continue this interesting discussion over time - as for the word austronesian and it use - that is another conversation again sometime - cheers SatuSuro (talk) 14:53, 28 March 2010 (UTC)

Translation request[edit]

Hi Djoehana, I'm working on getting the Commons templates available in more languages. A lot of languages are already complete, but Indonesian isn't. Would you be willing to help out? Translation is done at http://translatewiki.net . If you want to help you can leave a note here and start translating here. Might look like a long list, but with some clever copy and pasting (have the list of countries open) it shouldn't take up a lot of time. Translation are generally available at Commons within 48 hours. Multichill (talk) 09:35, 27 March 2010 (UTC)

Hindu temples[edit]

Yes, it was in some of the 19th century pictures of Borobudur - they have in their titles 'hindu monument' - they did that sort of thing then :( SatuSuro (talk) 13:25, 20 April 2010 (UTC)

X I cross the mention of any kings after our previous conversations :0 - as for any of the material relative to candi or temples or whatever - please note I am trying always to reduce down to as few categories as possible - trying to make sure parent/child categories are not found together - so I do hope I do not step on any toes when I do that. In other words apologies in advance if I removed categories that you might have added :) - I try to keep the category space simple SatuSuro (talk) 13:45, 20 April 2010 (UTC)

Category:Sangir Islands[edit]

You should use Move if you want to rename a category. The name you redirected to is different than the one in use at the enwp. You might want to have that page renamed. Multichill (talk) 17:56, 27 April 2010 (UTC)

Hello Multichill, I don't understand your position. The original name is Sangihe. Just look at any version other than the English one. Sangir is the name of the people and the language. Why should the English version prevail? Anyway, it can be changed as well... :-) Humboldt (talk) 18:06, 27 April 2010 (UTC)
Because that happens to be our naming of categories policy, see Commons:Categories. Please don't hop talk pages. Multichill (talk) 20:17, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
Sorry, my English is deficient so I don't grasp what you mean by "hopping". Anyway, I will not let myself be drawn into a fight about Indonesian names being corrected by "categorists". Meanwhile, I have changed the name to en:Sangihe Islands, but I suppose you will decide what is correct or not... :-) Humboldt (talk) 20:33, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
I started a discussion here, so you should respond here. Hopping is spreading a discussion over multiple talk pages. Changing a category into a redirect should only be done in obvious cases. In other cases it's better to use move and just wait. We'll see what happens :-) Multichill (talk) 20:39, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
Its odd to think I might be the native english speaker trying to keep up with you both (trying to follow, aka mencari apa apa) - I personally object to a larger number of categories for Indonesian subjects/things here on commons, but have not done anything about it so far SatuSuro (talk) 00:06, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
I am more concerned that there are some categories created here in commons that do not tie into anything on en wp - unless they exist in id wp? SatuSuro (talk) 09:50, 1 May 2010 (UTC)

Moslem?[edit]

Mohon maaf kalau saya menganggu atau yang lain - sorry I am not very sure where you got that from (Moslem graves) - we need to have a very serious discussion about your category creation exercises if you are going to invent that sort of stuff - Islamic or muslim might be closer to the mark SatuSuro (talk) 01:21, 27 May 2010 (UTC)

And if you read http://hnn.us/articles/524.html it is outright offensive - and should not be used in a multilingual context like commons SatuSuro (talk) 01:43, 27 May 2010 (UTC)
Maybe I am wrong? maybe Islamic cemeteries? SatuSuro (talk) 03:49, 30 May 2010 (UTC)
Multichills answer I think is a good one - in some cases religious type might be too narrow a scope - SatuSuro (talk) 03:49, 30 May 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Plumpungan inscription translation.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the OTRS system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. Thank you.

Oh dear[edit]

So when did the idea to change from Adisucipto to Adisutjipto actually come from? Please explain, as I see no reason why you should have done that sats (talk) 09:09, 16 August 2013 (UTC)

OK so the airport still has signs with the old spelling, and the international flying information has new spelling. Bodoh sekali. or in english dumb. Inconsistent. sats (talk) 09:23, 16 August 2013 (UTC)

inconsistency makes a fool of an encyclopedia that tries to keep things in order... pandering to the idiosyncracies of indonesian inconsistencies makes the editor ?... I see it a bit like the time and space people wasted in this project trying to show the emperor he has no clothes. the emperor has no clothes and spends a lot of time trying to prove he has them. it must be commons. sats (talk) 14:35, 16 August 2013 (UTC)

Bays by province[edit]

Hi Humboldt. I see you just recreated an already deleted category Category:Bays of North Sulawesi. I previously requested this category to be deleted as don't see the point of categorizing large geographic features by small and changing administrative subdivisions. Many of the large bays of Sulawesi are shared between multiple provinces, so placing images into subcategories by province makes them harder to find. I think mixing up physical geography and human geography is confusing. --ELEKHHT 12:52, 18 May 2014 (UTC)

Bls: Kantor kecamatan[edit]

Halo, maaf baru sempat membalas. Sempat berpikir lama, saya setuju untuk pengategorian per provinsi, tapi mungkin saya tambahkan di berkas baru saja. Kalau berkas lama, ga sanggup, foto kantor camat yang saya potret ada ratusan! Ezagren (talk) 07:36, 27 November 2014 (UTC)

File:Bawean2.jpg[edit]

Pay attention to licensing Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content : images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose.

File:Bawean2.jpg seems to be free (or it would be proposed for deletion), but it was identified as having a wrong license. Usually, it is because a public domain image is tagged with a free license, or because the stated source or other information is not sufficient to prove the selected tag is correct. Please verify that you applied the correct license tag for this file.

If you believe this file has the correct license, please explain why on the file description page.
