Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Scaling up images

Hi, I notice that you have uploaded a couple of images that you have edited and enlarged. There is no point in enlarging images. The wiki software automatically scales images when they are displayed on wiki pages. But storing scaled up images is not a good idea as it just leaves us with a slightly lower quality image, that will be again scaled to the appropriate size on display anyway. Please add images to most relevant categories, for example Category:Toyota vehicles, not in generic ones like Category:Automobiles. Generic categories could be easily become overcrowded and useless for search. Especially edits like this are incorrect.

Infrogmation

Hi. Thanks for your good work! However I've noticed a couple of times where you've added a redundant category to an image - that is to say a general category, when the image is already in a more specific sub-category. For example, if an image is already in "Category:2002 in Baton Rouge", you don't need to add "Category:2002 in Louisiana", since "Category:2002 in Baton Rouge" is already a subcategory of that. Similarly for "(year) in Miami" being a subcat of "(year) in Florida". Hope this helps! If you have any questions about Commons you have trouble finding the answer to, feel free to ask. Hi, why did you change the license tag of the picture links above to PD-USGov-Congress? That tag is only for files, that were taken or released into the public domain by members of congress. Certainly not for pictures of other government agencies that are hosted by the library of congress. Transferring images, redux

I previously left a note on your talk page about using CommonsHelper when transferring images from English Wikipedia. In some cases, this can be very important: for example, File:Patch of the United States Border Patrol.png had uploads by users there, and you completely left out that information when transferring it by hand. This might be a copyright violation as the changes made by the user to the image may have gone above the threshold of originality. Please consider using CommonsHelper for future transfers.

Oh, okay. The KPAGF flag was a PNG version of an SVG file that was uploaded under the Creative Commons license. However, since it is redundant to have it, it has been marked for deletion. Hi, you've proposed a number of file renames according to criteria #6 harmonisation for template, I however, cannot find any templates that they are used in. Could you elaborate on which template they are used in? Otherwise they may be failed due to criteria to decline #1. Hello! If you're referring to the U.S. county/city flag rename requests, these types of flags tend to have their names go "Flag of COUNTY NAME, STATE NAME.fileextension", etc. See articles "Los Angeles County", "Prince George's County", etc. Cheers! Hi, no disagreement, but to rename criteria #6 is to:"Harmonize file names of a set of images (so that only one part of all names differs) to ease their usage in templates (e.g. diagram symbols, scans of pages of a book, maps)" and requires that they be used in a template, not simply because the others also have the same style. Criteria to decline #1 is:"Files should NOT be renamed only because the new name looks a bit better." For example the name "File:Flag of Nassau County, New York.svg" looks only a little better than the existing name File:Flag of Nassau County, NY.svg so unless it's name being changed would help it's use in a template it should be declined per #1. I assume this edit was a mistake, with which you removed the copyright tag from the image I found in Category:Media without a license: needs history check today. Please be more careful when editing such image details because it could well have been deleted for lack of a licence except that I reviewed the history and found the problem. I think your withdrawal was premature. Commons is based on consensus, if one or two people don't want you to be an administrator, as long as many more do, that is not a problem. I also don't believe the question was particularly fair or useful, there isn't a single administrator on this project who knows copyright perfectly in each and every jurisdiction and it is easy to ask such questions in each and every RfA. Copyright law is confusing, complex and often contradictory, and that's where the idea of having a pool of administrators comes into its own. We have 220+ admins not just to share out work, but to ensure there's as wide a range of knowledge as possible. The person who knows the answer to one question may not know the answer to another. I think the withdrawal was an interesting and noble decision, especially as you explain it above regarding harmony and tensions down the line. So I would also like to encourage you to reapply in a few months. It does seem that you may not be familiar with all of our policies yet, so I'd particularly suggest you read over COM:PRP and COM:EVID, and then help out discussing some deletion requests in the meantime. FYI, it was not my intent to derail your adminship request entirely. It was more my hope to get you to state exactly what you'd done wrong and to state that you would pay closer attention in the future. Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Dear Illegitimate Barrister,

The 2013 Picture of the Year competition has ended and we are pleased to announce the results: We shattered participation records this year — more people voted in Picture of the Year 2013 than ever before. In both rounds, 4070 different people voted for their favorite images. Additionally, there were more image candidates (featured pictures) in the contest than ever before (962 images total).

  • In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files
  • In the second round, 2919 people voted for the 50 finalists (the top 30 overall and top 2 in each category)

Howdy! Why, yes there is. The white fimbriations along the red Cross of St. George in the canton are slightly thinner than on the present one. Hi- Dropping a note or having a conversation before applying a "superseded" template on an [original illustration] would have been appreciated. The png file you made has cut off parts of the original design (not just the name of the state, but the top and sides as well) therefore making it a file of questionable utility. @LogFTW: , I think I'd disagree with Syria being a secular state, at least, according to the information I found at the United Nations. According to Article Three of the 2012 Syrian Constitution, the President must be a Muslim and "Islamic jurisprudence shall be a major source of legislation". That doesn't seem very secular to me if the head of state must be a certain religion and laws are mandated to be enacted based upon a certain religion's teachings, all specified in said country's constitution. Inkscape imposes its own idiosyncratic code formatting when it saves SVG files. Inkscape is good for a number of things, but producing clean or optimized SVG code in images with simple geometric specifications is not one of those things. Not sure what you mean by your 1280px comment either -- for a long time 2000px was the maximum width of a PNG generated from an SVG file by the software here, but now the limit seems to be even larger. Illustration workshop

When making posts to the Illustration workshop, you need to have a bit more patience. Keep in mind it is the weekend and that all of us are volunteers so don't expect request to get completed immediately. Sometimes may even be one to two weeks before someone takes on a request. Some of us get burned out as well, so sometimes we just need a little break which is why sometimes it takes a couple weeks before a request is taken. Just some food for thought. What is your source for "1984", and do you have in image for the 1949-1984 flag? in 2015 you moved this file step by step from (1948-1984) to (1948-1949). May I ask whether you had literature or some specific kind of a reason to assume that 1984 was wrong and that 1949 is right. Dear Illegitimate Barrister, let me write a few words regarding your activity, as I see that maybe you overlooked certain rules of this project. Sorry for the numbered list, but I'd like to keep my message clear and concise, hence this form. Thank you for your understanding.

  1. Commons:Talk page guidelines - says, that while deleting your talk page is not prohibited, certainly it is not recommended, as it makes tracking the communication more difficult. Please consider refraining from deleting, and I encourage you to archive your talk page instead.
  2. Offensive language, threats, vulagrisms are very unwelcomed! Simply - don't. I hope that I don't need to elaborate on this point.
  3. Files should not be overwritten, redirected and otehriwse modified, especially when they are already used across wikipedia projects. If you think that a file is factually inaccurate, you might tag it (for example Template:T), discuss it, or simply create a factually proper version of the file. However please bear in mind, that other editors might still disagree or dispute your claims. But how the file is used on the local wiki, is of course up to this local wiki - even if it is wrong.
  4. Redirects are to be used only when a file was moved to another name. They are not to be used as name synonims, placeholders or for any other reasons. Even after file moving, it's advisable to fix all links accross wikipedias, when possible, so they all link to the new name (and ask for deleting the old one).

Hello! You've renamed one of my files (File:New York City (New York, U.S.), Empire State Building -- 2012 -- 6448 (bw).jpg), but there is no reason shown in COM:FR. (I've seen your comment, but here is Commons, not Wikipedia.) Additionaly the name is part of my name schema and part of the attribution chosen by my, the author.
