Source, auteur, date, etc.[edit]

No, it is not. And do not remove warnings.
This file is OK, but the date should be the original one: File:Joel Martel and mother of Jean Vigoureux, Jeanne Fonssagrives with plaster bust; 1915.jpg. Do not put {{Own}} unless you are the artist (for a painting) or the photographer (for a picture). For the works of Jean Vigoureux, his heirs need to confirm the license via email. Please see COM:VRT for the procedure. Thanks, Yann (talk) 11:31, 2 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Jean Henri Vigoureux in the U.S. Army circa 1943.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Jean Henri Vigoureux in the U.S. Army circa 1943.jpg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

Notification about possible deletion[edit]

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

@Yann I’m so sorry (je suis désolée) that I deleted your tags on a couple of them! I’m a relative of this artist and I inherited some art. Then an editor saw that my uploads were wrong (CC by SA) so I started to put PD on them (advice from teahouse and then Commons help desk) and I found there are different PDs and I accidentally put it in source. I’m trying to fix my mistakes. So now should I put “own work” in the permissions section? The VRT said they take 11 days but I’m going to be deleted in seven days. I just changed the “Jean Vigoureux in the Army”license to PD. I’m happy to give permission to all of them. Merci beaucoup pour votre patience.JHVfan (talk) 06:22, 3 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello![edit]

Just a reminder, you can migrate your images to Familypedia, which accepts fair-use images and uses the same Wiki markup language. You can actually migrate the entire draft biography there too, and the images will display, once they are migrated. --RAN (talk) 19:17, 2 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Richard Arthur Norton (1958- )Thank you for writing. I hope that everything works out - I’m a new Wikipedia user and wow - it’s so much harder than it looks! I keep making mistake after mistake. I might need to take your advice. (I’ve never heard of Familypedia before - I’ll check it out)JHVfan (talk) 06:31, 3 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Don't worry, copyright is hard, you will get the hang of it. I migrated some of the photos to Familysearch, get a free account and Findagrave. They are allowed there under fair-use. Is that you also writing the draft biography? Are you a family member? Some of the images can appear in the Wikipedia article, you just have to reload a few to English Wikipedia instead of Commons. English Wikipedia allows some fair use images. I will migrate your draft article to Familypedia and send you the link, you will have to edit both articles when you find a mistake, but the Familypedia version can display fair-use images more generously. I added Jean to Wikidata Jean Henri Vigoureux, if you click on the link to Familysearch, and register for free, you can see the extended family tree I created. --RAN (talk) 06:36, 3 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) Wow - I’m overwhelmed. Seriously, this is so nice of you. I thought maybe in a few MONTHS I would try to get around to finding out about Wikidata and then MAYBE trying to do it - and I think you just did it in TEN SECONDS. Thank you very, very much. I need to get some sleep soon but later I’ll re-read everything. And thank you again. JHVfan (talk) 06:58, 3 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • If you have photos taken by a family member we have a license Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs that allows those images on Commons, the problem with the non art photos is that they were taken by a commercial photographer, and that person owns the copyright, look for photos taken by a family member and they can be posted, if you are also a family member. --RAN (talk) 13:17, 3 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) Yes I’m a relative of this artist and I inherited a folder filled with photos, drawings and articles about shows, etc. That is how I made most of the article. The original photographers must be long dead since they were taken a hundred years ago. (Except for Jean in the US Army in 1943 - that photo’s in the Public Domain because the photo is almost 80 years old - I believe his first wife took the photo but not sure) The editor has taken the deletion warning box off of one photo, but he hasn’t taken the three other warning boxes off, even though I made corrections and put all of them in Public Domain. In fact, I put all scans of photos and drawings in Public Domain. If I write “own work” in the “Permissions” section will it suffice? When I scanned the drawings I had to scan them in sections and then “stitch” them back together again in The 2009 version of Photoshop. The way I understand it is: the “source” is “own work” because I own the drawings. The author is JHVfan because it’s me who made the scans. And the date is the date I made the scans. Does that sound accurate? He hasn’t removed any of the warning boxes on the drawings yet. And strangely, he put a deletion warning on two of the photos of the paintings I took, even though the (admittedly not great) photos I took are my “own work”. The Wikipedia editor was the one who originally told me to put things in Public Domain (in the Licensing section). It’s the Summary box that’s been a problem for this Commons editor. Perhaps I should just put “Own work” in all the Permissions boxes and see if that works? JHVfan (talk) 04:44, 4 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Where the prints made in multiple copies, or where they one of a kind art works? If multiple copies were sold then the copyright clock would start, and yes, they would fall in the public domain because of the lack of a copyright notice and lack of renewal. If they are one of a kind artworks and you inherited the copyrights, then you can release them under Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs. They all have to be marked |author={{Creator:Jean Henri Vigoureux}} and the date changed to the date it was created, not the date it was scanned. Did you say that Jean's wife was the family photographer, then you have to mark those photos as "|author=Fanny G. Varnum" and "Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs". Do you have a death date for Fanny G. Varnum? --RAN (talk) 06:11, 4 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, thanks for writing. I was just reading the Commons:Hirtle Chart and I think I put the proper PD’s on most licenses, but what you just wrote above really helps me with the summary box! The drawings under JHVfan were the ones that got me in trouble. They are the Indochina drawings and they are one-of-a-kind (to the best of my knowledge) but they were never copyrighted. So I put PD-US-no notice in curly brackets for the license. Should I keep the PD and then write: date = 1930s, source=JHVfan and author=Jean’s name exactly the way you wrote it above? Fanny only took the Army photo and I don’t know what happened to her after they broke up. I dreamed one day of doing a documentary and writing a proper biography in the future. Until then it’s a mystery.JHVfan (talk) 06:51, 4 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Richard Arthur Norton (1958- )I’ve just been going around trying to change the source stuff and you already fixed a number of them. I’m so grateful for your help. The template for Jean in the author section looks so good. Really, thank you so much. Later today I’ll see what happens and if it’s still necessary to ask the VRT for permissions I’ll do that. Thank you again.JHVfan (talk) 08:29, 4 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Did you get a free Familysearch account? You can see more of the family tree. --RAN (talk) 14:37, 4 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Richard Arthur Norton (1958- )Hi RAN, I’ve been looking around, trying to read as much as I can, and I’ve asked the VRT team about it since I’m still nominated for deletion. But I found what I think might be the perfect tag: PD-heirs between curly brackets. It’s “For works released into the public domain by the heirs of the creator”. I think I might add this to all the scans and photos. In addition to the PD if it’s already there. By the way, is there a way to take the red color off of Jeanne Fonssagrives name. I would love to check out all the stuff you told me about once this scary deletion stuff is over. Thank you again for speaking up for me on the request for deletion page. JHVfan (talk) 08:41, 5 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) Thank you for fixing the red color. Wasn’t it Neil Young who sang “Out of the red, and into the black?” I’ve just spent several hours trying to fix different things (I’m not nearly as quick as you!) Tried getting into emails, and connectivity dropped on my hotspot. That happens a lot. Yesterday, I couldn’t get into Wiki for several hours. I feel like I’m in my final year of college, writing papers, taking exams and so nervous that I could fail.JHVfan (talk) 05:18, 6 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Richard Arthur Norton (1958- )Hi RAN I went to Family Search and was afraid to sign up. How were you able to migrate the info over without me having an account? Can I see what you did before deciding? Thank you very much.JHVfan (talk) 18:31, 7 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

But once you are in the tree and logged in, it will show your relationship to everyone in the extended family. The family wasn't added to Familysearch but I added in 10 generations. The tree goes back over 200 years. You can then add photos and biographies. Familysearch links to original documents like the Italian and USA census. --RAN (talk) 18:50, 7 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) Thanks for writing. The part you mentioned about privacy sounds great (that’s really important to me). So that’s part one. Then of course it’s the time - like right now I’ve got a stack of stuff to do and I’m dallying. I will sign up, but I’ve got to find a good chunk of time when I can spend hours on it. Thanks for the recommendation!JHVfan (talk) 19:50, 7 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
