Hello JJ Harrison!

Thank you for providing images to the Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to the Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on the Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you. Finn Rindahl 18:05, 6 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Flash lighting and more

[edit]

Hey NS, Hope yr feeling better. After reading Richard's comments and yours at FPC about a flash diffuser, I built myself one, and the results were pretty good. If you get the time, please see my nomination of the flesh fly at en fpc. Regarding the flash bracket. Google doesn't provide much info. What is it? A soft box I presume would be a diffuser, right? Another dumb question, what is the off axis flash method? Muhammad 19:26, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Noodle snacks,
was there any discussion/consensus about emptying the gallery Depression Glassware? You'll surely know that a gallery is not the same as a category and serves a different purpose. As one can see, the images in the gallery all had small caption explaining what is shown, whereas in the cat you have to click on each image to know what is shown. In case there was no discussion before that move, I would strongly prefer to maintain the gallery (in addition to the cat). The avoid a preemptive deletion I've reverted your changes to the gallery, for the moment. --Túrelio (talk) 11:25, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Size of your images

[edit]

Hi. Is there nothing that can convince you to submit large versions of your often very good quality (both in composition and technical prowess) images? Lycaon (talk) 18:14, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

my conspiracy brain problem

[edit]

When I first started to watch the goings on at FPC I was surprised/horrified to discover that photographers were being encouraged to use scaling to sharpen their fuzzy and not focused images. I got a little script from one of the GIMP gurus who preceeded me and put it here to show my sarcasm at the process. Lately, that kind of thing has disappeared there mostly.

I rely too much on others knowing the camera and the size that can be expected from -- just to let you know of one of my many problems.

But this is what always happens now when I read one of them commenting that a larger version should be uploaded: I always think that the review system is being used for sales of the higher resolutions. And, I always think that and my thoughts like this might be due to facts of genetics that haven't been established yet or because of my experience with the pettiness of photographers and their often complicated justification system.

I am curious to read your answer to this problem that is in my mind. -- carol (talk) 13:10, 26 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your honest answer. The abuse of the voting mechanism here that leads to the enabling of idiots and even more abusers of the voting mechanism here -- not uploading the high resolutions of an image is among the least of the abuses that occur. See this interesting discussion which is one of the motivations that I suggest to supercede FPC and look for Featured Administrators and their contribution to show on the Main Page for a while.
People are not so much like photographs, are they? I admit that some of my reaction to the down-sizing as a means to make a photograph acceptable felt personal as well as not making sense for actual image work.
I have decided lately that people are more like paintings than photographs and all of my down scaling horror applies there as well both in actuality and representationally. Not always strongly defined blotches of blended colors, rarely with the "noise" problem and quality gets hurt by the jpeg artifact thing that helps photographs appear to be more sharp. The paintings I have been working on -- the prints are old and time has changed the ink and perhaps time has changed the subject also. This image shown here is causing me problems. Every current photograph of this species has flowers which are yellow. The way that this one particular substance which might have been used to make inks from goes from red/blue to blue/green also makes sense for restoring this image -- but it makes the flowers more purple and not yellow.
Getting attention at FPC does not seem to improve an uploaders willingness to collaborate. Monopolizing the nomination system at both en:FPC and here -- the proof the the assumption is long overdue. I might be at the beginning of campaigning to have FPC superceded and you do not seem to need the attention there so perhaps I campaign here some.
Thanks again for your honest answer and the space to campaign for a clean up if that is what I am doing. -- carol (talk) 04:01, 27 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, JJ Harrison!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Relicensing

[edit]

Hey Noodle snacks, sorry, but you can absolutely not relicense you images to a more restrictive GFDL-1.2 only license. I'm reverting your changes. --Dschwen (talk) 15:59, 5 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Creative Commons licenses are non-revocable, so the original licences should stand (as now reverted back). See Frequently Asked Questions. Snowmanradio (talk) 17:14, 5 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • There is a difference between revoking a liscence, and removing it from an image page (distribution). Fir0002 for example has changed liscensing on all of his images by changing a template (which went unnoticed). Please learn the difference between yourevokation and distribution, and be considerably more careful before using administrative tools to make bulk edits (by your own definition have "revoked" a large number of GDFL-1.2 liscences).Noodle snacks (talk) 02:04, 6 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Lens

[edit]

Hi Noodlesnacks. Buy a Sigma 150mm or a Tamron 180mm if you want to have the maximum distance (40cm). If you are very rich buy the Canon 180mm which is the best in that class (workmanship, autofocus). A very good start could be the Tamron 90mm Macro (dist. 30cm). A shorter tubus or better said less tele produces picures with more plasticity because the 180mm/150mm gun barrels does sometimes very flat images. A used 90mm isn't very expensive at ebay - you should try this first IMO . If you are getting more and more addicted to macrophotography then you must by hook or by crook buy a big motor pool of macro lenses --> 50mm, 90mm, 180mm, loupe lens. Hope I helped a bit, reg. --Richard Bartz (talk) 02:09, 7 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

photo license request - Silvereye

[edit]

Hi Noodlesnacks,

Here at the American Printing House for the Blind, a not for profit agency, it is our mission to provide educational materials for students with visual impairments and blindness. We are currently developing an atlas for students with partial sight. In the product we need a photo of a Silvereye from Tasmania. We found one here on Wikipedia

We noticed that you are the owner of the original image and are now seeking permission from you to use the image in our atlas, Address: Earth.We know you have given Creative Commons 3.0 permission but our agency requres that we keep a statement from you which gives us permission to use the image in our atlas. We like your image because it has the high contrast and clarity needed by students with visual impairments and it is beautiful.

I promise you our students will receive much educational value from your photo. We will, of course give proper credit to you and print an URL of your choice in close proximity to the photo. We will also use the Creative Commons statement if you desire it.

Please consider our request and get back with me when you have determined your answer. If you decide to let us use the photo, we have downloaded the high resolution image.

Thank you very much for your consideration,

Elaine Kitchel Research Scientist American Printing House for the Blind 1839 Frankfort Ave. Louisville, KY 40206 (800) 223-1839 ext: 313 www.aph.org/

Hey Noodle snacks, I realize your weren't asking for it, but let me still give you this little tip on how to make your uploading more comfortable: Disable the new Upload form completely in your preferences and add the following text to your monobook.js. This will automatically prefill the textfield with some boilerplate text (you should adjust it) and it will change the "upload file" link in the sidebar to directly point to the "own work" form instead of making you jump through hoops.

//
// Insert a personalized Texttemplate into the Special:Upload edit box.
//
function delayedUpdateSpecialUpload()
{
var editbox = document.getElementById('wpUploadDescription');
editbox.value = "{"+"{Information\n"
               + "|Description= \n"
               + "|Source=own\n"
               + "|Date=\n"
               + "|Author=Noodle snacks\n"
               + "|Permission=See license\n"
               + "|other_versions=\n"
               + "}"+"}\n\n"
               + "== Licensing ==\n"
               + "" // put your personal template here
               + " |{"+"{self|GFDL-1.2|author=I, Noodle snacks}"+"}";
}
function setSpecialUploadTemplate()
{
var uploadURL = 'http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Upload&uselang=ownwork';

// I upload mostly my own work
document.getElementById('n-uploadbtn').firstChild.href = uploadURL;

// preload input form
if(window.location.href == uploadURL) setTimeout( "delayedUpdateSpecialUpload()", 500 );
}
addOnloadHook(setSpecialUploadTemplate);

Ok, it is only a suggestion. If you choose to implement it I'd be glad to help you adapt it to your needs. --Dschwen (talk) 15:09, 20 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Noodle snacks - these are both cultivated Picea abies. Can I add a plea, always include the location of where photos are taken, it can be valuable information! Thanks, - MPF (talk) 14:32, 29 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! If you don't want to give away the exact location of your garden (very understandable!), a general comment and location (e.g., "cultivated, Tasmania") is still a big help. As an aside, am I right in guessing you're on Tasmania, going by your other photos? If yes, is there any chance you could get photos of some of Tasmania's native conifers? Commons is very sadly deficient in photos of Athrotaxis cupressoides, Athrotaxis selaginoides, Callitris oblonga, Callitris rhomboidea, Diselma archeri, Microstrobos niphophilus, Phyllocladus aspleniifolius, Podocarpus alpinus, etc. (spot the red links, that's how bad it is!!). If you can get them, that would be really great; I can help out with idents, and perhaps locations from literature citations. - MPF (talk) 14:10, 30 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

      • It is not a case of misplaced templates. I intentionally added a by User:Noodle snacks to have the bot put the notification here. It seems appropriate to notify the author of the picture to encourage him to participate in QI as well. People complained to me before when they as the nominator got notified instead of the author. • Sure, you can also create the template and you can hand it out. The suggestion is good, don't get me wrong, it is also not new :-). It would complicate the nomination process, if the bot should handle notifying the creator. The creator would have to be specified manually, it is not trivial to determine. The benefit would be minimal since mostly people nominate their own images (which is sort of the point of QI, maximizing throughput, it is not supposed to be a badge of honor, but a tool to build a collection of images adhering to a minimal technical standard for the end user). --Dschwen (talk) 13:29, 8 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please give some thought to writing a good description of uploaded images. This ensures that they can be used. It also helps those that review and improve categories do a better job, which also ensures that images will get used in novel and interesting ways. Thanks, and happy editing!

Not sure what your issues are with that image, but the large wide margins filled with featureless white background do not add anything useful to the image with regards to how it might be displayed in Wikipedia articles etc., and the previous version (listed as "21:17, 12 March 20" on the image description page, but actually uploaded Feb 2nd.) was also cropped... Camera info template

[edit]

Hi,

As I monitor every (I try at least :-) VI, QI and FI promotion to write description in french, I came across many of your pictures. Firstly, congratulations for all the nice pictures (for what it is worth, as I am no photographer :-).

I noticed you use User:Aka/Camera, and I was wondering if you knew about Photo Information and if you had any reason for not using it. If you do not mind, next time I edit one of your picture, could I move those info to the standard and localised template? Except if you see a problem in that, of course.

Commons FP

[edit]

But what is Commons FP for? en:WP has full access to the whole image set, and their own FP process to highlight images that suit them, as do the other language wikis. What are we trying to achieve with FP on commons? --Tony Wills (talk) 02:08, 13 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • I couldn't tell you. It isn't really encyclopaedic/valuable images (no wow). Seems to be more or less the pretty ones with some constraints (resolution, licence, image quality, not a war photo). What it is and what it should be differ in my opinion. The process is defined the people that participate (it is a vote), not the criteria, so it isn't going to change in a hurry in my view. Re: accidental duplication

[edit]

File:Ara militaris -Cougar Mountain Zoological Park-8c.jpg. The author of this image uploaded a few from his collection from Cougar Mountain which were already on flickr. In some cases my image had a better name and so his were deleted. You will see from this image that a bespoke flickrreveiw tag was added after upload because the user wished for a lessor used license, as did many of his own uploads. It might help if the flickrreview tag was added to your images to reduce the number of accidental duplications. The licence on flickr would need to match with one of the licenses on commons. I wonder the the 1.2 license is redundant being the most restrictive. Snowmanradio (talk) 09:34, 20 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi Noodle snacks. Let's say I open an image in CS3, do not do any edit to the image at all, and save it. The quality (the sky mostly) is getting worse than in the original. Could you please explain me why? Thank you.--Mbz1 (talk) 14:19, 7 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I already know :) Please ignore my question.--Mbz1 (talk) 20:40, 7 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'm assuming that the answer was a result of the natural properties of the .jpg format, which cause the file to lose quality every time you save it? :P Sarcastic ShockwaveLover (talk) 13:04, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Panorama software

[edit]

Hi,

What program do you use? File:Sydney Harbour Bridge from Circuilar Quay.jpg I'm guessing is from two or three images and it looks great!

I've done a few panos (few of them are 360) but the software seems to do want I don't want it to do such as misalign the images, colour balance is incorrect ect.

Programs I have used are PS CS3&4, Hugin, PTGui, Panorama Factory and an older version of Panorama Maker 4 (got it free with SD memory card when I purchased my DSLR).

Out of those PS CS3 and Panorama Maker 4 have been the ones that have worked ok but not how I wanted them too though.

Examples: File:Panorama of the southwestern end of Lake Albert.jpg, File:Panorama from the northern end on the lake bed of Lake Albert.jpg, File:Panorama of the southeastern end of Lake Albert.jpg and File:Lake Albert 30 January 2010 panorama.jpg. Bidgee (talk) 14:11, 8 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • G'day. Generally I use PTgui and smartblend, but hugin is probably just as good these days. The problem with those panoramas is not software though. It is parallax error, which becomes a problem whenever you have a close foreground. Smartblend might help a little (google it). The solution to get those images to stitch properly though is to rotate the camera around it's nodal point. To do that you need a panorama jig. You could either buy one (eg nodal ninja), or if you have a few tools, make one. Noodle snacks (talk) 00:04, 9 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
    • PTgui is a nice program once you add on Smartblend! ;) The nodal point trick seems to work (File:360 degree panorama from the peak of Rocky Hill.jpg, weather got a little poor when I got up to the peak so did a quickly [as I became the tallest object on the hill, and lightning isn't a good mix] but you can see that it looks ok in the panoramaviewer on the toolserver) and I have a tripod with a head that can turn the camera on to its nodal point but had a dud bolt which I replaced today but the other issue also is its a rather tall tripod when folded (Maximum hight is almost two metres [as I'm a tall person and I hate bending to take a photo]) so its a pain to carry around! Thank you for your tips and will keep your DIY panorama jig in mind, infact I may look at a cheap but light weight and some what strong metal but have to investigate that as ply and moister doesn't mix very well (but better then chipboard and MDF ;) ). Bidgee (talk) 16:29, 13 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
      • Good luck. You might try a few horizontal control points to keep the horizon straight. As far as articles go less than 360 degree panoramas are often preferable in my view (but panorama viewers are fun too). I did realise your height by the way - we met at the GLAM conference - I'm in the first pic on your userpage. Noodle snacks (talk) 09:36, 19 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Profile size and activity criterion for Commons:Meet our photographers

[edit]

Dear member of Commons:Meet our photographers,

Two issues have recently been raised at Commons talk:Meet our photographers:

Profile size creep
The page is becoming increasing cluttered due to a tendency among some members to make personal profiles, which are unreasonably large. You are kindly requested to consider the size used by your profile and consider if it has a reasonable size. Note that the same message is being send to all members, so it is up to you to use your own good judgement in this. We are not interesting in setting up exact quantitatve rules. It should be a matter of common sense.
Activity criterion
It has been suggested to introduce an activity criterion in addition to the minimum 10 FPs criterion to be included on the list. You are kindly requested to voice your opinion on this proposal.

Dear Friend, this "picture of the day of 10th August 2010" is definitely no "Musca domestica". It looks like the common bluebottle "Calliphora vicina" - old name "Calliphora erythrocephala". I am not acquainted with the australian fauna, but for Europe this would be the correct ID. Jan Velterop, dipterologist, Enschede NL.

metal object

[edit]

Re: File:Merops ornatus - Centenary Lakes.jpg. This bird is perched on a metal object. It would be helpful if the image description explained what it is. As an infobox image, I would expect that this object would be a mystery to many. Snowmanradio (talk) 12:36, 9 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • I have not seen a drinking fountain like that in the UK. I understand the photograph a bit better now, and the bird is shown very clearly. Have you got a photograph from a distance showing any of the surrounding scenery? Snowmanradio (talk) 12:54, 9 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • I could uncrop it from the original, but it'd just consist of more out of focus background blur. The image is geocoded though. Trying to take pictures of the surrounding environment for every shot would be cumbersome and probably mean missing some of the shots themselves. JJ Harrison (talk) 22:24, 9 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hidden user cat?!

[edit]

Hallo JJ Harrison, http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Blasting_frankfurt.jpg&diff=63411875&oldid=55963456 the category is neither hidden nor existent nor are you the photographer of this pic, are you? Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 04:21, 5 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi Saibo. It will be. I'm running auto wiki browser at the moment to add the category to all of my images. It will be more efficient to remove the few errors like that image at the end (and I will do so). JJ Harrison (talk) 05:50, 5 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    • Please first create the category in such a case. That would be far less confusing. In fact, I thought your activities could be vandalism due to all the facts I have listed above.
    • I did not have disabled anything for you.
    • You seem to have tagged quite some false positives. e.g. this FP,too. It was just confusing. Hope you understand that it looks very strange that some user tags images as images of someone else which are not. Continue to tag if not finished already - but, next time, please create the category and maybe place a note inside the category and in your edit comment ("tagging with AWB for my other account"; if possible). Well, and try to avoid wrong taggings. ;-) Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 13:33, 5 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

FYI: Used your media file

[edit]

This is a courtesy note. One of your media files is featured in a new commercial eBook in Apple’s iBooks store: http://itunes.apple.com/us/book/dr.-kemps-kids-love-bugs/id497852225?mt=11

I’ve contributed images to Wikipedia for over seven years now (including several POTD and Featured Images) and I designed the WikiSpecies logo. I respect your work here and the CC-BY-SA license we all labor under.

I know commercializing Wikipedia work is tricky and so I’ve taken great pains to follow your CC-BY-SA license requirements. I also plan to donate 10% of my proceeds to the Wikimedia Foundation directly. This is the very first self-published e-book created with Apple’s new tools and sold in the store.

I’ve given your file a credit line in the “Image and Video Credits” section starting at page 24 as required here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Text_of_Creative_Commons_Attribution-ShareAlike_3.0_Unported_License

This compilation features many of the finest Wikipedia media files in their exact form and not as derivative works. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Verbatim_copying_under_the_GFDL#Making_verbatim_copies_of_images

If I did alter your work -- such as cutting out an insect part or adding a video sound track -- I shared a Share Alike version of the new media in a DRM-free format and listed the web address in the credits section.

Thank you very much for uploading your work to Wikipedia and releasing it for the world to use in enriching educational formats.

Hi JJ - how sure are you that this File:Sternula albifrons - Laem Phak Bia.jpg is a Little Tern? The head and bill proportions, and leg colour, look wrong to me, I'm thinking it may be a winter plumage Common Tern. Let me know what you think, please! - MPF (talk) 13:32, 5 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Author field

[edit]

Hi,

I noticed you recently mass-changed the value (example). Perhaps its best to remove that entirely and instead put it in your user info template above it? The author field really should only contain the name. 82.74.194.195 06:14, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • Perhaps. I'll have a think about it. It is fine per commons policy though. Contact details are fine per Commons:USER, and I'm removing a website, so it isn't extra clutter. JJ Harrison (talk) 06:45, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    • Hello JJ Harrison,
      Contact details are fine indeed, but COM:USER is not about the Author field, it is about leaving them on the file description page in general (e.g. in the license's "attribution" field, or in a custom template like User:JJ Harrison/Template).
      A similar case was raised in the Village Pump last year about someone who got attributed in a photoalbum as "John Doe talk". I don't remember his nickname, but it did not include the word "talk". This was the result of a simple html-strip of the Author value. But the user put his wiki-fancysig in there instead of a simple user page link with name. –Krinkletalk 05:38, 29 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank You for the Wikipedia Picture

[edit]

Hello, My name is Duane Hurst and I recently made a free (non-commercial) English web site to share information with people. I added links to your Wikipedia/Wikimedia freeware picture. I also gave credit to you on my web pages for your work. Thank you for sharing with the public. My website is:

http://www.freeenglishsite.com/

I add pictures such as yours to one of the following major sections of my site: 1. World section - contains information and over 10,000 images of every world country and territory. Link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/world/index.htm

2. USA section - contains information and images of every USA state and territory. Link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/world/usa/index.htm

3. English section - "Mel and Wes" lessons in conversation format. Stories are located in various USA states and world countries such as China, England, Germany, Japan, Mexico and Thailand. Each lesson has many slang terms and idioms, which I link to my Slang Dictionary. This eventually will have over 5,000 terms. Currently, it has about 3,000 slang and idioms. I regularly add new lessons and slang terms. Link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/english/lessons/index.htm Slang Dictionary link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/english/slang/Eslang_a.htm

Prior to retirement, I taught English at several private and public universities in the United States.

Please share this free site with your friends. I hope all will enjoy the pictures and find the English information useful. Sincerely,  Duane Hurst in Utah, USA

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Appropriately Licensed

[edit]

You participated at the earlier discussion on licence choice for Featured Pictures. A number of users felt that such restrictions should be made at policy level. Please comment at Commons:Requests for comment/AppropriatelyLicensed. This is a proposal to amend this licence policy to disallow future uploads where the sole licence is inappropriate for the media (e.g., GFDL for images). In earlier discussions there were a number of comments that, while reasonable opinions, did not align with Wikimedia's mission for free content. Please read the FAQ before commenting. Thanks -- Colin (talk) 22:55, 15 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Administrators' noticeboard

[edit]

Hi JJ, you might want to look at Commons:Administrators' noticeboard#Link to Facebook account. Thanks, Bazonka (talk) 19:23, 31 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • Yawn. That comes up about once a year. It is fine per current policy. If you want to waste time making up new rules and further encumber commons with just a little more red tapism, be my guest. Still, I suggest you and the others do something useful. BTW, a few resultant Facebook subscribers have been encouraged to upload valuable stuff here, and no, I'm not selling anything. JJ Harrison (talk) 03:25, 4 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
As a staunch defender of people's right to 'advertise/promote/whatever' themselves here in return for great images (so ping me if you see anyone trying to erode them), I do however have two suggestions, which I think are just a good ideas from a common sense standpoint - 1. give consideration to moving the template below the {Information} box (I don't use AWB and haven't used Commonist for ages, so I have no idea if this would be a hassle or not). This was the first time I'd ever seen a user generated template 'above the fold' so to speak, and I have to say I found it a bit confusing/disconcerting/odd from a Commons 'brand identity' standpoint. 2. add some wording to the template just so it's clear who "my" refers to - I suggest "This image was created by me, JJ Harrison. If you enjoy my work and would like to see more, please subscribe to my profile on Facebook." As an aside, I'd also suggest dropping the attitude - I've never seen anyone stop any particular recurring bandwagon on Commons/Wikipedia just by saying yawn or telling people to go do something useful. In my experience there are certain types of user that actually see responses like that as a motivation to keep going. Ultra7 (talk) 23:51, 5 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
As I stated shortly after this comment, that's fine, so long as I don't have to spend the time to make that change. Write a bot and it shall be done. JJ Harrison (talk) 13:56, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hello, JJ!

My name is Laurie and I'm the Project Manager for na2ure, an NYC-based startup toy company. We featured this photo of yours in our upcoming app, and wanted to thank you for your lovely photo. Thank you!

na2ure is all about designing science play. We developed a game-changing platform called ferret that classifies ecological data into an intuitive network that can be easily learned through play. The high end value of our work attracted STEM>STEAM icon John Maeda, as well as the VCs behind LittleBits, Sphero, Makerbot, and Shapeways. The science has been vetted by MD's and PhD's, tested by kids, and praised by educators as appealing to all ages.

Categorising images on Wikimedia Commons

[edit]

Hi there. Thanks for all your great uploads! I've been categorising many of your photos of birds that you have made in Thailand in to bird location categories. I have noticed that when you upload your images, you only supply the species category and nothing else. Could you perhaps in future also add in the Category:Birds of Thailand for those made in Thailand? I can take it from there and change it to a more appropriate category, such as for example Category:Birds found in Doi Inthanon National Park. I am sure that many people would also appreciate you doing this for your images that you've made in other countries, and place them inside for instance Category:Birds of Australia, Category:Birds of the Philippines etc.. It would be a great help. Regards, - Takeaway (talk) 16:36, 7 October 2014 (UTC) And of course there are also categories for mammals, insects etc. (see Category:Animals of Thailand) - Takeaway (talk) 22:58, 7 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

User:JJ Harrison/Facebook profile template has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this user page, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

File:Kitesurfer Tasmania 3.jpg + attribution required ; how?

[edit]

Hej,
if I use that image in an article on fr-wikt, how shall the attribution be done? Is it good enough that the system links to the image on wikimedia? I see that Quartz,_Tibet.jpg is used in eg [1] without further attribution. Thx, B Lemeukx (talk) 22:27, 10 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
