I found a gem

Hi Jeff - you probs wont remember me but your contributions to the Kendra Haste article saved most of my hair from falling out . I've just got my mitts on a high res copy of a 1928 panorama of the river Shannon, (who in 1928 could do panoramic photography), specifically including the Athlunkard bridge. It is of such historic significance, and yet it aint in NLI catalogues. Its 3.94meg - astonishing resolution - and begs for a place on Wikipedia. I was sent it as part of some research I was doing for a prospective Irish Times article. The current custodian of the original has given me permission to use it in the Times article as long as I credit both the original photographer, (natch), and himself as custodian. I can do that on uploading it to Wikipedia but fact is the photo (digital copy) he sent me isn't even on his website - its that fresh! Can I just upload it with current info? Is it passed copyright? Maybe I should just mug him and steal the original . For now all I want to do is upload and embed on the "History of Limerick" page. Am I clear to proceed? I can send you a copy direct, (blow your mind), if you email me from my userpage. Please advise. With thanks - MarkDask 22:20, 29 October 2018 (UTC)

@Markdask: Hi again. The original photographer's name and lifetime would be rather helpful in this regard. If he lived past 1947, we on Commons would need permission from his heirs via OTRS per COM:CRT#Ireland, or you could use it on English Wikipedia subject to en:WP:F.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 02:21, 30 October 2018 (UTC)
Thanks Jeff - you are a font of wisdom. The dear man left us in 1985 but those who survive him are amenable. I'm even more excited that the source of this image is a private repository of countless images of similar quality. MarkDask 00:35, 1 November 2018 (UTC)

Advertising images?

@Jeff G.: would you take a look at the uploads by this user, looks like advertising to me. Thank you for your time. Lotje (talk) 12:18, 1 November 2018 (UTC)

Image flagged for deletion

Hi Jeff,

I made a change to File:Map_Origin_of_Transylvanian_Watercourse_Names.jpg , and you have posted to my talk page requesting unspecified "permission information". The image was not uploaded by me, and I am not able to provide such information. It was uploaded by Andras Bereznay, who created the image himself, and specified {{self|cc-by-sa-4.0}} when he uploaded it.

I know that uploading images here is difficult; but I thought that it should be relatively easy for the creator of a work to upload his own work with a free license. I don't know why editors here make it so difficult. In future, when someone asks me how they can upload their own work to Commons, my advice will be "don't bother, it's not worth the hassle, and the image is likely to get deleted anyway". Maproom (talk) 15:31, 1 November 2018 (UTC)

@Maproom: I sent him the same post semiautomatically. He can send his permission via OTRS.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 15:37, 1 November 2018 (UTC)
Why should he have to? It used to be that people could upload their own work with a free license without too much hassle. If things have changed, I'll give up trying to contribute my own images to Commons. Maproom (talk) 15:45, 1 November 2018 (UTC)
@Maproom: Who declares "I, the copyright holder of this work, hereby publish it under the following license" at File:Map Origin of Transylvanian Watercourse Names.jpg? Why did he email the second version rather than overwriting himself?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 17:21, 1 November 2018 (UTC)
He (Andras Bereznay) declared it when he made the upload, as you can see for yourself. He emailed the second version to me because he didn't know how to upload a new version for himself. You have failed to explain why you think either of us has done anything wrong, and I have no idea why you have complained to both of us. But don't worry, I shan't be contributing to Commons again. Maproom (talk) 18:04, 1 November 2018 (UTC)
@Maproom: I've seen enough here and on en:User talk:Maproom. I undid those changes. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 02:06, 2 November 2018 (UTC)

asking to verify a image

Hello User: Jeff G. can u please review this image https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sai_Pallavi_at_Mca-pre-release-event.jpg which i have uploaded on October now it is September but no one has reviewd it. Can u plz review it. VenkateshMgna (talk) 13:37, 3 November 2018 (UTC)

@VenkateshMgna: If a free license has been sent to OTRS, then the file will be restored automatically when and if the email is received, processed, and approved. Note that OTRS, like Commons, is entirely staffed by volunteers, and, also like Commons, is shorthanded, so it may be close to 7 days before the email is processed and the file is restored. You were sent a reply email message Tue, 9 Oct 2018 13:51:56 +0000, did you not receive it? I have marked the file as OTRS received re Ticket:2018100810007819. See also COM:WATERMARK. Pinging @Rachmat04.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 22:16, 3 November 2018 (UTC)

User: Jeff G. can u tell me why u didn't approve this picture? Then I can resend the otrs with missing information. I think Ragalahari had emailed you with the correct procedure VenkateshMgna (talk) 08:03, 4 November 2018 (UTC).

@VenkateshMgna: The ticket belongs to @Rachmat04.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 10:29, 4 November 2018 (UTC)

Bullshit

18plusadultwebcamjobs.com is bullshit. The images are automatically collected from the web. The "review" at the bottom is also random. Try reading it. It's just a bunch of YouTube video descriptions. The only purpose this serves is getting a Google rank so ads can be served now that the "content" is gone. Zombie clickbait. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 00:45, 5 November 2018 (UTC)

@Alexis Jazz: Of course, but that is not nearly as bad as the current content, which randomly redirected me into different NSFW porn and gaming sites. Not that I expected a site with such a name to be SFW, but still...   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 00:57, 5 November 2018 (UTC)
At least the redirect doesn't pretend to be something it's not. But it's all useless crap, redirect or random review. No value whatsoever and certainly not the source for anything. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 01:02, 5 November 2018 (UTC)
@Alexis Jazz: Right. I've got my popcorn and leftover candy corn ready to watch the next Jcb@ANU debate.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 01:11, 5 November 2018 (UTC)

https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Steward_requests/Global&oldid=18543129#Global_lock_for_Hasive

I made an edit request on Commons talk:Paid contribution disclosure policy#Suggestion to further clarify our policy. Hasive shouldn't be globally locked or banned for undisclosed paid editing, especially when they are active on a project that doesn't require disclosure. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 08:19, 6 November 2018 (UTC)

Jeff spends weeks to argue with stewards about this account instead of adding a notice which takes only few minutes. If all the policy requires is disclosure, then why on Earth didn’t you make the story public? Incnis Mrsi (talk) 09:08, 6 November 2018 (UTC)

@Alexis Jazz and Incnis Mrsi: Disclosure should be made by the editor who was or will be paid. I have attempted to engage with him and I will be watching his activity.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 13:16, 6 November 2018 (UTC)
Not needed on Commons. May result in blocks on other projects, which is not our problem. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 13:25, 6 November 2018 (UTC)
Commons belongs to Wikimedia (actually belongs, not in its full name only). Why do you think that Commons is exempt from this norm about disclosure? Incnis Mrsi (talk) 11:41, 7 November 2018 (UTC)
@Incnis Mrsi: were you replying to me (asking why Commons would be exempt from the requirement to disclose paid contributions) or Jeff G. (asking why Commons would be exempt from the option for projects to adopt an alternative paid contributor policy like Commons has)? - Alexis Jazz ping plz 11:51, 7 November 2018 (UTC)

Regarding my accusation against Alexis Jazz at COM:AN

Good evening Jeff G.

It has been brought to my attention on the Simple English Wikipedia that I have accused another user, Alexis Jazz, of wikihounding following a heated argument and problems in the other place. I have explained that the whole of this situation has blown up from my editing while both drunk, and whilst stoned off my head on my Epilepsy medication, which resulted in my spending more than 15 hours in hospital being treated and cared for after a violent seizure (caused by the alcohol ingestion). I wish to make it absolutely clear that Alexis Jazz has not wikihounded me, and that the thread at COM:AN is purely the result of me being a massive dick and nearly killing myself. It will not happen again. Thanks for reading! DaneGeld (talk) 23:24, 6 November 2018 (UTC)

@DaneGeld: Thank you.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 08:32, 7 November 2018 (UTC)

This problem appears in lot of files you changed today. Do you see also the error messages ?
Maybe one of a model used has a internal error following an update on it. A bug somewhere ?

I have seen your correction. For that to work, the "Div" and the "table" should have been outside the "information section". --Poudou99 (talk) 23:21, 15 November 2018 (UTC)

Huggle on Commons

Hello Jeff, did you hear anyhting more regarding Huggle becming activated on Commons? Dan Koehl (talk) 06:10, 23 November 2018 (UTC)

Question on copyriht

Hello Jeff. Apologies in advance for posting this here too. I am rather new and eager to learn. You answered on another user's page here:https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Krd regarding a deleted logo that I should ask for OTRS. That I got, but before going to ask I wanted some clarfications if possible. WFUNA obviously doesn't want to release it logo for public use. What kind of authorisation do they have to give to give to achieve just something similar to this: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Flag_of_WHO.svg Indeed, if you check the webpage of the WHO here : http://www.who.int/about/licensing/emblem/en/ the usage is quite restrictive but the logo is nonetheless on WP.

Thank you very very much!

PS: I look the liberty of correcting the greek in you welcome page and a typo in italian ;)--APG1984 (talk) 09:23, 25 November 2018 (UTC)

@APG1984: File:Flag of WHO.svg and File:WHO Rod.svg are licensed {{PD-US-no notice-UN}}. Do you have evidence that the logos you wish to upload appear in an official document of the United Nations published in the United States prior to 17 September 1987 that was not listed in the appendix of Administrative Instruction ST/AI/189/Add.9/Rev.1? For each logo you want to upload, where can we find it on the Internet and where did you get it? Thanks for the corrections.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 10:44, 25 November 2018 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Regarding 1987 I checked and no, the logo dates from 2010-2011 and does not look like the old one.
But what about this one: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:KPMG_logo.svg. How did they get to upload it. It is not public domain for sure and the link to which it redirects says at the bottom of the page: "The KPMG name, logo and “cutting through complexity” are registered trademarks or trademarks of KPMG International". I guess my question is: how did it end up in WP without KPMG declaring it public domain, as it seems to be necessary through the OTRS process--APG1984 (talk) 11:36, 25 November 2018 (UTC)
@APG1984: File:KPMG logo.svg was uploaded as {{PD-textlogo}}. Are your logos that simple? Please use internal wikilinks when appropriate.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 11:45, 25 November 2018 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: The logo I want to upload is this one and variations of it : http://www.cipadh.org/sites/default/files/wfuna.png.
I must say I do not know what {{PD-textlogo}} is but I guess the type of uploading has nothing to do with copyright. KPMG logo is indeed very simple but it is still material under copyright; same goes with PWC and thousands of other logos in WP. After what process were they considered acceptable uploads? Sorry for my ignorance of course. And thanks again for the precious help. Noted on internal links--APG1984 (talk) 11:56, 25 November 2018 (UTC)
@APG1984: If you click on the link in {{PD-textlogo}}, you should be able to read Template:PD-textlogo. See also TOO and en:Threshold of originality. http://www.cipadh.org/sites/default/files/wfuna.png might qualify for {{PD-US-no notice-UN}} as a DW of File:UN emblem blue.svg, but I'd like to get Krd's opinion.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 12:17, 25 November 2018 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: I must say I am more confused now. KPMG or PWC (just as examples) must have copyright over their logos - i have diffuculty imagining the opposite. And they are not US firms (as WFUNA is based in Switzerland). I wrote on Krd's page to ask him for his opinion. thx--APG1984 (talk) 12:30, 25 November 2018 (UTC)
File:AOS3 at Backhouse Park, Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, 16 June 1992.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
