Hello, Joel Bradshaw!

Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations"). Pro-tip: The CommonSense tool can help you find the best category for your image.

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Categories[edit]

Thanks for all of your NRHP pictures for Oahu! One request: would you be more precise/careful with your use of categories? Many of your images you placed in the nonexistent "Category:Hawaiian architecture"; if a category doesn't exist, it doesn't help to put something into it. As well, when you post these NRHP pictures, could you put them in Category:National Register of Historic Places in Hawaii, rather than in Category:National Register of Historic Places? Thanks! Nyttend (talk) 20:13, 12 April 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for cleaning up after me! I initially used "Architecture in Hawaii" after seeing other "Architecture in (State)" but then switched to "Hawaiian architecture" because I saw it had been used in (English) Wikipedia (but not in the Commons). I'll continue using your "Buildings in Honolulu, Hawaii" and "NRHP (spelled out) in Hawaii". Joel Bradshaw (talk) 20:54, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
Hi, sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you. For things like buildings or people, where many photos of the same thing can be added, it's best to categorize as specifically as possible. For example, Category:Alexander and Baldwin Building can contain several photos of the building, and in turn be included in Category:National Register of Historic Places in Hawaii and Category:Buildings in Honolulu, Hawaii, and potentially others. It makes things easier to find, instead of having to wade through hundreds of images of buildings, not all of which may be descriptively named. Check out some of the other NRHP state categories; Florida and Category:National Register of Historic Places in Washington are the best examples. --Spyder Monkey (talk) 01:46, 14 June 2009 (UTC)

Oahu Cemetery[edit]

Hello, I noticed you had a picture of Oahu cememtery, so I used that in the article I just wrote. Quite a number of notable people there. We are having a debate, however, about if the "Nuuanu Cemetery" is the same place or "completely different". As far as I can tell, the old part is officialy called "Oahu Cememtery", but since the addition in 1949 the area is often called "Nuuanu" after the valley it is in. If you are still available, please take a look at: Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Numismatics#The_sources_can.27t_agree_on_the_location_of_the_event mahalo. Ooops, did not realize this is "commons" - please see the English Wikipedia. Sorry. W Nowicki (talk) 18:48, 21 November 2009 (UTC)

Hi! I created the Commons:WikiProject Romania as a sister project to the multilingual WP:ROMANIA versions (currently en, fr, ro and ru) to better organize, categorize and improve the quality of media and galleries related to Romania and the Romanians. From your contributions, I think you might be interested and maybe you wish to join and support the project. Your input is welcomed! Thanks and best regards!

Pratt[edit]

Hello, I noticed your photos of Oahu Cemetery tombstones. Do you still live in Honolulu? Would you mind taking a photograph of Franklin Seaver Pratt and his wife Elizabeth Kekaaniau Pratt (her gravestone is here but I can't use this one because I didn't take the photo)?--KAVEBEAR (talk) 22:06, 4 July 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2013! Please help with this survey.

Dear Joel Bradshaw,
Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2013, and for sharing your pictures with the whole world! We would like to ask again a few minutes of your time.

Thanks to the participation of people like you, the contest gathered more than 365,000 pictures of cultural heritage objects from more than 50 countries around the world, becoming the largest photography competition to have ever taken place.

You can find all your pictures in your upload log, and are of course very welcome to keep uploading images and help develop Wikimedia Commons, even though you will not be able to win more prizes (just yet).

If you'd like to start editing relevant Wikipedia articles and share your knowledge with other people, please go to the Wikipedia Welcome page for more information, guidance, and help.

To make future contests even more successful than this year, we would like to invite you to share your experiences with us in a short survey. Please fill in this short survey in your own language, and help us learn what you liked and didn't like about Wiki Loves Monuments 2013.

Kind regards,
the Wiki Loves Monuments team
