Hello, Kentronhayastan!

Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations"). Pro-tip: The CommonSense tool can help you find the best category for your image.

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Pasting a bunch of other people's non-free photos together does not make you the copyright holder of their works, and it doesn't make them any less non-free. Several of the pages you took photos from have very clear copyright notices and "all rights reserved" notes, meaning they are not free, including http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/iRsl4zSLlZ4nB9auJMDGew, http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/ZbeY409ThVaERFX-VdM68g, http://www.flickr.com/photos/nersess/2137880081/, http://www.almainc.org/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=10&products_id=142, http://www.panoramio.com/photo/110913, and http://www.armeniatravelblog.com/museums-night-2009-in-yerevan/. Again, pasting a bunch of other people's non-free photos together does not make you the copyright holder of their works, it doesn't make it your "own work," it doesn't make them any less non-free, and it doesn't give you the right to place the result under a free license. You need to read Commons:Licensing. LX (talk, contribs) 00:11, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
I understand your point, but all of the photographs used, except two, are from Wikimedia Commons (and on their license, it says I am allowed to use them, read it), and the other two are widely used, free public photographs. I wonder if you re-checked my sources before quickly deleting it. I will re-upload the image, and instead of deleting it, first tell me which ones are violating people's copyright, and I'll have them changed, no questions asked, promise. I will wait until the file is legit to post it on the Yerevan article in Wikipedia. Thank you for understanding.
If it's the "license" section that is incorrect, tell me which license I should use in order to make this image free, yet not claim to be the copyright holder of the work (which I agree, I am not). I can't seem to find the right section to upload this image:

It is entirely my own work (not true)

It is someone else's work from Flickr (more information on uploading Flickr images) (not from Flickr)

It is a derivative work of a file from Commons (a derivative of many works, not one, so n/a)

It is from another Wikimedia project (Wikipedia, Wikibooks, Wikinews, etc.) (not from another Wikimedia project)

It is from a US federal government source (n/a)

It is a free software screenshot (n/a)

It is from somewhere else (...)

It is a non-free fair use image (Non-free logo, cover, screenshot, artwork etc.) (it would be "fair use" but that doesn't work here)

I don't know who the author is, or I don't know what license applies (doesn't work either)

I need help figuring out what the license is (THIS is my situation, so if you can help me with this, I'd appreciate it)

The fact that they are put together is my own work, but the photographs are not. And I acknowledge this, but I have used photographs that are not protected by copyright (again, check the sources). Tell me how my image is different than this one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:NYC_Montage_12_by_Jleon.jpg
Please do not recreate previously deleted files. If you disagree with a deletion, you can request undeletion at Commons:Undeletion request. Repeatedly bypassing this process can get you blocked.
You ask whether I re-checked your sources before deleting the file. Firstly, I did not delete the file; I only tagged it for deletion. As the log shows, it was deleted by Herbythyme the first time and High Contrast the second time. Secondly, yes, I did re-check the sources before tagging the file, and I quickly determined that several of the photos were non-free.
You say that you need help figuring out what the license is, citing that line from the first step of the upload process. That entry links to Commons:Help desk. The idea is that you should follow that link and ask before uploading, rather than going for a trial-and-error approach. You seem to be under the impression that if a photo is widely used, then it must also be free or in the public domain. This is not the case. A photo may be widely used because several people have bought or received a limited, non-free license to use it – or they might just be using it in violation of copyright laws (which in no way makes it okay for us to do the same).
Anyway, let's go through the files you used, top to bottom, left to right.
You could create a montage of the files except the six marked X mark.svg Not OK above, and the appropriate license for that specific combination would be (if you need help understanding why, I'd be happy to explain). For an example of what the file description of a montage of free files should look like, see File:Montagem Manaus.jpg (which I've personally tidied up). Note that the uploader is not listed as an author, as the task of cropping or pasting files together does not meet the threshold of originality to merit any copyright protection other than that afforded to the individual images. http://www.armeniatravelblog.com/museums-night-2009-in-yerevan/ (I think; you provided no source for this one), which may or may not be the original source, but the copyright notice at the bottom states: "Armenia Travel Blog © 2008-2009". No indication whatsoever that this is under any kind of free license. X mark.svg Not OK

I have provided a source for this one. http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Armenia_Museum_of_Art_and_History.jpg. For the rest, I will get back to you on them. I don't have time right now.
Ah, okay. I did not see that in the file description. Anyway, that file would also be fine to use, and it's the Armenia Travel Blog that appear to be using it unlawfully (by not fulfilling the license requirements). Thanks for pointing that out. LX (talk, contribs) 05:45, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
