Fusion af kategorier

Hej MGA73

--Dannebrog Spy (talk) 13:22, 7 December 2009 (UTC)

Det kan du have ret i. Men vi bør nok give Hebster en chance for at kommentere. Hvis han kan give en god og fornuftig begrundelse for en opdeling, så skal han da næsten have chancen. --MGA73 (talk) 17:46, 7 December 2009 (UTC)
Det mest korrekte var i øvrigt nok at sætte en {{subst:cfd}} på kategorien så alle har chancen for at kommentere. --MGA73 (talk) 17:51, 7 December 2009 (UTC)
--Dannebrog Spy (talk) 14:00, 8 December 2009 (UTC)

This image

Should this image be passed as an upload by a 'trusted' wiki bureaucrat? Ukrainian bureaucrats should also know the rules, I think.

I look for any other images from this flickr account and found this here Admin Tucker sent a message to the flickr owner on November 25...but he refused to respond since his last flickr image upload is November 29. Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 05:10, 10 December 2009 (UTC)

Well. You can see some images from same uploader here: Commons:Deletion_requests/File:Pidhoretsky_Hrad-Park.jpg. It had Cc-by-nc-sa-2.0 on 2006-10-02 according to User:Para/Flickr/Licensing differences/Incompatible only two weeks after upload. --MGA73 (talk) 19:17, 10 December 2009 (UTC)
  • OK then. Maybe you should nominate it for deletion if you wish. It looks like some images were free and others unfree from this flickr account. Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 20:09, 10 December 2009 (UTC)

File renaming

Thanks for the hint (although Commons:File renaming is on my watchlist of course). But where to place those lists and {{universal replace}} commands (Commons:File renaming/requests or directly User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands)?. -- Common Good (talk) 20:29, 10 December 2009 (UTC)

We could make a new section on User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands or you could leave it on my talk page. Anywhere is good :-) I hope that once the backlog is done it would be easy for admins to keep up with the renaming. I will cleanup in the category in a few minutes. --MGA73 (talk) 20:49, 10 December 2009 (UTC)
OK. I will try to help with the renaming requests backlog next week. -- Common Good (talk) 21:03, 10 December 2009 (UTC)

harmonizing names

This is not a system these are abbreviations. Congratualtion! 90 % of the german soldiers won't understand them. You are encouraging the most uterly brainless renames of files just because someone thinks that dot looks better than a hyphen or vica versa. Honestly, that is a waste. --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 21:33, 10 December 2009 (UTC)

I know that not all thinks the names are good. Thats why I started Commons:Village_pump/Archive/2009Oct#Suggested_rename_of_some_COA. I see it as an "ok do the rename then if someone will do the work". You might have noticed that files has also been "renamed" by uploading new files and then the old ones have been deleted as duplicates. Doing a rename (a move) is much easyer. --MGA73 (talk) 22:47, 10 December 2009 (UTC)
He should be bloked for that behaviour. Than that spook would end. --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 23:12, 10 December 2009 (UTC)
The best would to start (reopen) the a debate on these names. But cryptic names is not new, Just look at images like File:BSicon xuABZdrl3.png. I have no idea what that mean but it seems that it makes use of templates easy. --MGA73 (talk) 05:52, 11 December 2009 (UTC)

your bot is great!

Hello MGA73, I have seen that your bot is active to link the categories in the German WP to the categories in the commons - thanks for that!, very useful! The categories in the commons deserve more maintenance and visibility. Best wishes Cholo Aleman (talk) 11:57, 11 December 2009 (UTC)

Thank you very much :-) Yes it really finds a lot. It makes Commons more visibile but it also helps categorizing images on Commons.
The bot could also work on articles but it would probably be placed in a wrong place (somewhere at the bottom of the article). Of course that could be fixed next time the article is edited :-) --MGA73 (talk) 12:46, 11 December 2009 (UTC)

Files still awaiting OTRS confirmation

Hello, MGA73. The file(s) listed below have been marked with {{OTRS received}}, but there has been no complete confirmation of its permission status in the last 30 days. From what I'm able to tell, you were the person who added this template. Would you mind taking a look at this again? If confirmation cannot be found, this file should probably be marked for deletion. This should be the only notification you will receive regarding this image, so long as the comment I added to the image description page is not altered. Thanks! HersfoldOTRSBot(talk/opt out) 09:22, 12 December 2009 (UTC)

If you are not an OTRS volunteer or did not add the "received" template to this file, it's possible I made a mistake identifying the correct user. I look for the most recent diff where the template was added, so if you reverted an edit where this template was removed, I can't tell the difference. If this is the case, please let my operator know at w:en:User talk:Hersfold. Sorry for the inconvenience!

Mapping

Ok. Sad to stop. Important project. Trawling the categories does make you realise the inconsistencies in the present tree. I didn't back check to geograph- it is not a technique that I have used- Points- is a uk railway term but does exist is some placenames- though it is incorrect English to call a headland a point. I missed that one. Hairdressers- I pass on, it must have slipped through in a batch- there are a lot of shop categories that don't exist at the moment.

Some of the mappings are just impossible. There are some geograph image classes that should be represented on commons but just aren't there, probably because they represent UK specific subjects. From observation it seems very few of the images that have been geograph2commons-ed have all their categories transferred.

Get back to me if you restart the project. --ClemRutter (talk) 20:57, 12 December 2009 (UTC)

If they are impossible or do not match our categories we just skip them. Then the bot will look for words in the text and if that does not work it places them as uncategorized. Then some humans will probably find the right category for the files.
One of the reasons we stop is that we want to get started uploading. And some of the categories on www.geograph.org.uk/ have only one image or a few images. Then it is much faster to categorize with hotcat than to make a list, import it in some database etc... Also we do not know if it is a xxx in England or it is in Nothern Ireland. Then it is faster to upload them to Commons and make relevant subcats later. --MGA73 (talk) 21:05, 12 December 2009 (UTC)
By the way will Category:Barber shops do? --MGA73 (talk) 21:06, 12 December 2009 (UTC)
No. There is Category:Hair dressing shops which is poor English but solves the problem. Barbers shops are only for men who want a simple hair cut. Hairdressers did women's hair, and now do both sexes. In spoken English the hairdresser is a person- the hairdressers (more correctly a hairdresser's or even the hairdressers') is the hairdressers premises- mostly that is a shop but not always. Six doors from my home, the owner uses the ground floor of the house as a hairdressers --ClemRutter (talk) 00:52, 13 December 2009 (UTC)
Any other queries?--ClemRutter (talk) 00:52, 13 December 2009 (UTC)
Cool. Then we better put them in the Hair dresser shops :-)
Multichill made a list Commons:Batch_uploading/Geograph/matches so we can see where things end up. It should be easy to check if categories match (at least when it is "one word categories".
If you find any errors you can leave a note in this section User:MGA73/Sandbox#Minor_fixes.
Multichill will add the ones you placed under "Done..." - hopefully tomorrow.
I just noticed that you have done some work on the ones still not done. If some of them is ok or you find some extra (like Railway_tunnel -> Category:Rail tunnels just put then as "Done 13...". :-) --MGA73 (talk) 01:07, 13 December 2009 (UTC)

Sub-optimal editing in DE:WP

Hi, this edit makes sense concerning the removing of the Category: however the removing of the German title/wording of the commons category is rather unwanted. Please adjust your bot. Greetings. --Matthiasb (talk) 20:38, 13 December 2009 (UTC)

Of cource. I looked at a lot of the categories in de-wiki and only a few had a german title/wording so I thought it was the plan to show the name from Commons. --MGA73 (talk) 21:36, 13 December 2009 (UTC)
If the category is wrong the bot will remove it and replace it with a correct link. This includes removing the translation because that might be wrong too. If you would like to see things in German, you should default the text to {{PAGENAME}} and not {{{1|}}}. Looks like someone already brought this up at de:Vorlage Diskussion:Commonscat#Änderung des Linktextes. Multichill (talk) 21:41, 13 December 2009 (UTC)

If a category is moved on commons the translation does not become wrong. Not only for that reason it is inacepatble that the bot removes the pipe. That needs to be changed. --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 22:06, 13 December 2009 (UTC)

an appeal

Hello, I have been following the renaming process recently, and the removal of rename requests without explanation, or worse with an accusation of some unspecified "violation". Yours seems to be the calm voice of reason, and so I would like to appeal to you to reconsider the rename requests for these. You don't seem to make a win/lose issue or a wheel war, thank you for that. If you say no, at least I have put it before a user that I can talk to, so whatever you decide, thank you ahead of time.

These are the images which I request be renamed, with rationale to follow:

Thanks, Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 07:36, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

Thank you for yor notice. There are several reasons NOT to rename files:
  • Some months ago we could not move. We had to upload a new copy and delete the old one. That made it hard to follow the history and it made a bot the uploader and the original user did not have the image in the gallery anymore.
  • An image might be used outside Wikipedia and if we move it the link might be broken.
  • It takes a time.
  • People have differend preferences.
  • Etc.
Therefore renaming polity is (was) a bit "hard" and I rejected a lot of requests. Now an admin can press the move tab and the file history is intact and uploader is not changed. The policy could be (has been?) loosend up a bit. I do not know if everyone on Commons knows that (and agrees).
As for the "COA" I really do not know if there is a naming convention for that. I think that in some categories almost every files is named in a specific way (either "COA" or "Coat of arms" or ???). So I have to do a little research. If you find one please leave a link. --MGA73 (talk) 07:51, 14 December 2009 (UTC)
Personally I added an explanation for each removal. Kintetsubuffalo might want to look at the edit history for an explanation why I removed his requests. -- User:Docu at 08:18, 14 December 2009 (UTC)
It would really help if each request would refer to one of the specific reasons in the policy and explain how it meets it (e.g. "uploader request: I, Kintetsubuffalo, uploaded this file"). -- User:Docu at 08:22, 14 December 2009 (UTC)
Yes, I agree that adding a reason for renaming is good. But I'm nice so if history shows it is an uploader request or I agree I normally just do the move anyway :-) And I like that you tell why you remove the rename. Thank you for doing that. --MGA73 (talk) 08:31, 14 December 2009 (UTC)
There are a few requests I was about to remove before I noticed that it was the uploader requesting it. Anyways, uploader request is generally easy to check. Some of the others aren't. Most of the above requests seem to come from a confusion between file name and file description. Obviously, we could just attempt to set all file names to the description .. -- User:Docu at 08:37, 14 December 2009 (UTC)
Docu, you're right, and it would be great if every single person did just what we needed them to. I'd love it if my students did everything I wanted perfectly when I asked. It doesn't happen that way, not even on Wikipedia. Human nature being what it is, you get what you get, you assume good faith, and you act on that. You asked for a rationale, I gave you a rationale and no problems. Many admins don't even ask for that, and the moves go just fine.
Only one of those images is my upload, though I have been active on getting improvements to several. At the time, the uploader (not me in any event) used their own naming. With the Scout one, the convention has changed since I made my first rename request. Surely a more descriptive name is better than a less descriptive one?
So now we can go back and forth and make sure everything is stamped in triplicate with the proper signatures and t's crossed, or we can do renaming which have sound rationales now. At least you didn't accuse me of some unnamed "violation" like another user, so thank you for that. Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 08:42, 14 December 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. BTW, I made a summary of my trip to "file renamings": Commons_talk:File_renaming#File_renaming_requests. -- User:Docu at 23:51, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

Sorry that fairy tales needs to end. You can't have Erwin Lindemann and TUBS remove "Wappen" from images, have Magul et al. add "COA" to images and than have Kintetsubuffalo adding "Coats of arms" and converting "COA" to "Coats of arms". --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 08:46, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

Ah, so Cwbm (commons) is rude to everyone, not just me. Good, I feel better now. Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 08:49, 14 December 2009 (UTC)
FYI File:Coat_of_Arms_of_the_GE_FmBtl_DSO.svg. --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 08:55, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

@Kintetsubuffalo I moved the scout logos to harmonize the names + make it clear that the logos are "fake". As for the COA I see no real system in how they are named. So unless uploader requests, the names are misleading or there is a clear naming convention for the specific area I don't think that we should rename. --MGA73 (talk) 20:59, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

Thanks MGA73 for trusting my judgment on the ones you did rename. Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 15:14, 16 December 2009 (UTC)

UK/IE Lakes

At WP, there are fairly decent lists of lakes for England and Wales. I think it would be worth creating corresponding categories in advance. For England, the new categories should probably be subcategories of "Lakes of England" and "Bodies of water of <county>". As you made a lot of categories for other things, I was wondering if you had something set that could be used to create them? -- User:Docu at 23:51, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

Yes I agree that we should make subcats. It would be easyer for me if we made a list of all things that should have subcats of England, Wales... Before I do it would be nice to create all relevant categories here Commons:Batch uploading/Geograph/cat-matrix. I think we could skip the smallest categories. --MGA73 (talk) 07:49, 15 December 2009 (UTC)
It wouldn't really go into the matrix, as each cat would just be for one specific lake. Waterbodies by county might fit in somehow. If you create these, I could attempt to do the ones for the lakes. -- User:Docu at 15:27, 16 December 2009 (UTC)

OK. Yeah there is a difference between creating Category:Lake X1, Category:Lake X2 etc. and Category:Lakes of Bedfordshire ... Category:Lakes of Worcestershire.

I do not think I can make Lake X1, Lake X2 etc. faster than you can. Because every category would have a unique name. But if we should create 25 categories of [[:Category:<Whatever> in/of <counties>]] then I could do it.

Main category Number Bedfordshire Berkshire City of Bristol .. Worcestershire
Category:Abbeys in England xxx Category:Abbeys in Bedfordshire Category:Abbeys in Berkshire Category:Abbeys in the City of Bristol Category:Abbeys in ... Category:Abbeys in Worcestershire
Category:... in England xxx Category:... in Bedfordshire Category:... in Berkshire Category:... in the City of Bristol Category:... in ... Category:... in Worcestershire
Category:Lakes of England xxx Category:Lakes of Bedfordshire Category:Lakes of Berkshire Category:Lakes of the City of Bristol Category:Lakes of … Category:Lakes of Worcestershire

We just have to make a list of all categories we would like to have of "things" in England, Wales, Scotland... I will make subheadings in Commons:Batch uploading/Geograph/cat-matrix for the lists. --MGA73 (talk) 08:03, 17 December 2009 (UTC)

This image

Should this image be passed as the upload of a former Admin? I cannot check its history but it was uploaded 2 months before Jkelly became an Admin here so he should have known the license. The flickr account is likely orphaned. Not a single new image since June 2006. What do you think? Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 22:45, 15 December 2009 (UTC)

Well the license is GFDL. Not a very used license on Flickr. The question is if it is own work. I do not think we should pass it per Jkelly since he did not take it from Flickr so we do not know if he ever looked at Flickr. I can see that it was ARR at 2006-10-02. It seems Flickr user is not active so we can't ask there. Maybe a DR? --MGA73 (talk) 11:16, 16 December 2009 (UTC)

2 images?

Dear MGA,

Have you considered contacting the flickr owner of these 2 photos and ask if he would consider licensing them as 'Attribution-ShareAlike Creative Commons' on flickr...as he licenses his photos today:

I got this last one passed and that is enough for me:

Its a pity the captain is away now. But with those 2 photos I mentioned, there is a reasonable chance of a license change, I think. Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 05:51, 15 December 2009 (UTC)
