Parliament building of Benin[edit]

I saw the picture mentionned in the subject on the Benin page as well as Porto-Novo page. And it is written that it is the siege of Benin Parliament. Please, note that this is wrong. The building name in French is Palais des Congrès which can be litteraly translated as Palace of Congress, but its purpose is just to host events like seminars, conference and meeting. Benin Parliament siege is the "Palais des Gouverneurs" in French. And it is located in Porto-Novo, not Cotonou. Since i'm not used to editing wikipedia articles, I think i might let you know so you can correct this.

Best regards

Photo of inside of Cappella Palatina[edit]

Hello, Magnus.

Would it please be possible to have your permission to use your photo of the inside of the Cappella Palatina, specifically the one that shows the upper wall and part of the stalactite ceiling? I am writing a book on Norman Sicily and would really like to use this as the composition is so unusual. Thank you.

The Vernaccia pic[edit]

Hi, my name is Marco. I just would like to tell that the pic uploaded in the Vernaccia article it is not a Vernaccia from Sardinia, but (as stated on the label on the bottle) is a Vernaccia di San Gimignano. These two wines are quite different. I think the caption should be corrected. Best regards

Hi Magnus,

The image you uploaded on the Margaret Cavendish page in Wikipedia does not represent her. According to her biography, Mad Madge, it is an image of Mary Lucas, her sister. Is it possible to remove it? It is misleading as is. This is the link to the image:

Mislabel leading to Embarrassing Situations "Patch Adams at Sarvodaya.jpg"[edit]

Hello Magnus, My name is Derek Busby, and I am the assistant to Dr. Patch Adams. I am writing to you because the picture entitled "Patch Adams at Sarvodaya" has been incorrectly labeled. This picture is actually of Dr. Bowen White: . While Drs. Adams and White are both amused by the mix-up, this picture has been used on several wikipedia pages (Spanish and Italian at least), and has been picked up by fans who came to believe this was a picture of Dr. Adams. We now have T-Shirts and a statue which feature the image of Dr. White, which have been presented to Dr. Adams--much to the confusion to all those involved. So, I would ask that you please edit this picture to reflect the reality that this is an image of Dr. Bowen White. Thank you. -Derek

maximale Länge (Zeichenzahl incl. Erweiterung) für Dateinamen auf Wikimedia Commons[edit]

Hallo Magnus Manske,

Simon Fraser of Balnain[edit]

Hi Magnus I have written a book on the 1777 battles of Saratoga, which will be published by Oxford University Press next year. Simon Fraser of Balnain was mortally wounded in the second battle (about 3 PM on Oct. 7, 1777) at the moment that the battle and thus the entire American War of Independence reached its tipping point. It is, of course, important for us to include the image you uploaded, the only good one of Fraser. While I understand that credit is not required, I would like to include the credit line "Courtesy of Magnus Manske" or whatever alternative credit line you would prefer. Please contact me at so that I am sure that I get this right. Dean Snow —Preceding unsigned comment was added by (talk) 16:26, 03 December 2015 (UTC)

komischer Baustein?[edit]

Was soll das bewirken?

--Magnus Manske (talk) 16:06, 2 April 2016 (UTC)
Ah, also unfertig und Mißverständnis, sorry.
--Magnus Manske (talk) 18:15, 2 April 2016 (UTC)

crop request Foto Cynthia Nickschas[edit]

Cynthia Nickschas Waffenrod 2015 001

Wikimedia Commons Metadata[edit]

@Magnus Manske: Hi Magnus. I hope you can help. I need to access the metadata for an entire Commons category (I see the Wikimedia Commons API will call data for individual images). The category is:Welsh Landscape Collection. I need to list the handle number for each image, which is stated in the data for each image, for some work a volunteer is doing with Wikidata for the collection. For several different reasons, i cant get this info from the original metadata file. Do you think you could help? Thanks Jason.nlw (talk) 12:58, 5 April 2016 (UTC)

Would that be the {{NLWsource}} number? As on this page? --Magnus Manske (talk) 15:05, 5 April 2016 (UTC)
In case it is, here are the mappings. --Magnus Manske (talk) 15:33, 5 April 2016 (UTC)
@Magnus Manske: Yes! that was exactly what i needed. Thanks very much for your help Jason.nlw (talk) 16:17, 5 April 2016 (UTC)

CommonsHelper tool question[edit]

Greetings Magnus, I noticed this was archived but wasn't sure if you saw it before it was. I just wanted to report just in case. Reguyla (talk) 16:16, 5 April 2016 (UTC)

“Greetings Magnus. I just wanted to stop by and tell you that I really like your CommonsHelper tool. It makes uploading images to commons a lot easier than doing it manually. I have noticed however that when it does that, Ogrebot then goes along and has to do some cleanup. I was wondering if there would be anyway to adjust CommonsHelper to reduce or eliminate the amount of followup edits that OgreBot 2 has to do.

A couple suggestions if you don't mind:

  1. I would recommend that if a file contains no source information, that CommonsHelper would not let the user upload it. I had the problem with File:Jose Calugas.jpg recently.
  2. When I uploaded File:USMCGenRossDwyer.jpg it included some information that referenced Wikipedia itself. I would suggest maybe not allowing these either. For what its worth, in this case, the file refers to another similar file called File:Dwyer RossT MajGenUSMC.jpg that has the actual reference information. Not sure your tool can do much about this but in general I would think its not ideal to upload images that use WP as a source.
  3. When I uploaded File:Paul F Straub.jpg Ogrebot then went back and did some cleanup on the file that can be seen here. Maybe the CommonsHelper tool could do some of this when it loads the image?
  4. If you look at my uploads here you can see some more things that Ogrebot changes.

I its not possible to do these things with the tool or if you don't have the time I certainly understand. I just wanted to mention it because I noticed that Ogrebot is quite a busy bot and it might reduce some of its edits and the discussions that ensue if some of these things were tweaked in how the CommonsHelper tool worked.

Thanks for the time and please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks for all the tools you make, they really do help a lot. Reguyla (talk) 01:48, 12 February 2016 (UTC)

Also, if you want I can add them to your feature request tool you link too above. I just wanted to mention it in case it wasn't possible or needed. They also refer to the toolserver, so they probably don't work. Cheers! Reguyla (talk) 01:50, 12 February 2016 (UTC)”

Photo page Landsadvocaat[edit]

Hi Magnus Manske,

Is it possible to remove the photo of Eric Daalder? He is no longer deputy landsadvocaat.

Thanks in advance,

Victorine Stille Pels Rijcken & Droogleever Fortuijn

Well, if he ever was one, I see no reason to remove his photo. You might want to remove his photo from the Landsadvocaat page, which you can do by editing this page. --Magnus Manske (talk) 14:53, 7 April 2016 (UTC)

A week of looking at women[edit]

After reading (found on the meta sidebar with planet.wikimedia) I checked Category:Crop_for_Wikidata. Most were too small or too hard for my tastes, but some are over 1 MB and technically simple (as far as I trust that XnView lossless crop does what it says.) But my 1st test took rather long, I had to find commons categories based on an enwiki article. The 2nd test was straight forward, 5 minutes, using the commons category for the woman. The 3rd test was an epic fail, after uploading the crop I decided that the source license requires a DR (and the crop got a speedy). So that's not as easy as you (maybe) think, I give up for today. :-)Be..anyone (talk) 22:48, 8 April 2016 (UTC)

You can use CropTool to do lossless cropping online. It will re-upload the cropped images, categories and all. There is a Commons plugin to have it in the sidebar of every image. --Magnus Manske (talk) 16:31, 9 April 2016 (UTC)

New Commons Delinker bug?[edit]

Hi Magnus, I hope you are well... are edits such as Special:Diff/193266615/prev intentional? Similarly, Special:Diff/192642388/prev, Special:History/Commons:Deletion_requests/Files_in_Category:AIDS_Poster_from_Wellcome_Images_(check_needed). Storkk (talk) 12:36, 15 April 2016 (UTC)

It continues... I've put a 1-day block on it to prevent more DR destruction... apologies if that was incorrect. @Steinsplitter, Magog the Ogre: pinging other operators... Storkk (talk) 17:25, 15 April 2016 (UTC)
Should be fixed with this commit. --Steinsplitter (talk) 11:30, 20 April 2016 (UTC)
Thanks, Steinsplitter... perhaps also COM:OTRSN and COM:AN should be excluded? Is this behavior new? If I'm reading it correctly, the previous commit to yours just now was in December. Also, perhaps should be linked from somewhere. The request at the top of this page to report issues to "JIRA" is a 404. Storkk (talk) 11:45, 20 April 2016 (UTC)
When i have moor time i will take a look. --Steinsplitter (talk) 11:48, 20 April 2016 (UTC)

Ist das dein Ernst?[edit]

Hey Magnus,

--Atamari (talk) 07:03, 19 April 2016 (UTC)
Gute Idee. –Be..anyone 💩 22:43, 19 April 2016 (UTC)
--Magnus Manske (talk) 18:08, 19 April 2016 (UTC)
