County seats not necessarily cities[edit]

Re. my recent note: I didn't say that you'd created Category:Cities in Nebraska; I said that you'd created Category:County seats in Nebraska and placed it within the existing category (see diff).

This is not correct for the case of Nebraska, since not every county seat is classified as a city; I fixed the problem by moving it to Category:Populated places in Nebraska. There are almost certainly similar problems in other states; for instance, a spot-check indicates that municipalities in Maryland are classed as cities, towns, and villages, and I find that Easton's WP article calls it a "corporate town" and describes it as the county seat of Talbot County, so placing it in a subcategory of Category:Cities in Maryland would be incorrect. Since I'm sure that you don't want to introduce errors to WM's category system, I called your attention to the problem, trusting that you'll do appropriate checks and fix what needs fixing. Ammodramus OK. Got it this time. Clearly, I misunderstood the first time. I was using as a guide, and nothing in that list indicates the county seats are not cities. Perhaps you might like to also go over on Wikipedia and make some notes on that page. Thank you for coming back over to my talk page a second time to make sure I understood it. Thanks for the reply. Words like "city" and "village" and "town" can be a rich source of confusion: on the one hand, one tends to use them generically for "populated place"; on the other, they often have specific meanings in a given U.S. state. When I find myself having to create a Commons category for a community, I'll generally go to its WP article and see how it's described in the lead sentence, and categorize according to that. Fauna and flora categories[edit]

Are strictly restricted to the naturally occurring animals and plants of the location. Garden plants, home greenery, zoo animals, and pets must not be added. --Pitke (talk) 16:30, 25 April 2015 (UTC)

Thank you for letting me know. Maile66 (talk) 18:16, 25 April 2015 (UTC)

Oahu vs Honolulu County[edit]

I do not think that your unilateral replacement of Category:National Register of Historic Places on Oahu by Category:National Register of Historic Places in Honolulu County, Hawaii was a good thing. At the very least, it should have been discussed at the appropriate talk page.

Out aim in categorization at Commons is not mindless consistency -- it is creating a set of categories that make it easy for a novice user to come to Commons and find what he or she wants. Very few people will know that Honolulu County covers not only all of Oahu, but also a variety of small islands to the northwest. Users will come to Commons looking for images of things on Oahu outside of Honolulu and be confused. Note also that we have Category:Oahu with several thousand images in it. Would you change that to Category:Honolulu County? To be consistent, you must. .     Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 10:49, 29 April 2015 (UTC)

Thank you for your input. The short of's a work in progress. I've been trying to put some order to images in an area I have some experience with, that being NRHP properties and how to locate them. Which arose out of my trying to put some order to the glut of images by counties in the US. And etc. etc. One thing leads to another. My personal viewpoint re Commons is that it's an imperfect system, and is drowning in thousands (millions?) of uncategorized images, most of which seem to have multiple copies scattered hither and yon. Enabled in part by photographers trying to find the best fit for their uploads, and others who upload masses of public domain images and dump them en masse in multiple categories and sub categories of those same categories. And as soon as one category gets sorted and organized, they re-load the same unorganized glut again...and again...and again...and again. So, anyway, in this particular case, I was going by how someone would be looking when trying to match images with Wikipedia articles on NRHP properties. I understand what you are saying, but the redirect on Oahu would seem to insure someone looking under that category would know it went to Honolulu County. I feel like I have been searching through tens of thousands of images just to find one or two images and some order in the islands mentioned. It's been somewhat of a big mess to wade through. I certainly understand and sympathize with your frustration. Before I became an Admin and Checkuser on Commons, I photographed and uploaded 465 images of NHRP sites, mostly in Massachusetts, but also in Maine, Maryland, and North Carolina so I have familiarity with the problems of categorizing them. I also spent a good deal of time organizing and categorizing images of lighthouses around the USA and elsewhere.
I say again, that I think that counties are the wrong subdivision for anything in Hawaii. The islands are what everyone knows and will go to first. In light of that, the counties are a particularly strange choice because three out of the five cover more than one island. There are National Register sites on 9 of the islands and only the county Hawaii is coterminous with the island of the same name.
Some examples -- will you put File:Neckerisland.jpg and File:Nihoa cliff.jpg into Category:National Register of Historic Places in Honolulu County, Hawaii? They're both in Honolulu County although 400 miles of ocean separate them from the rest of the county. What about File:R. W. Meyer Sugar Mill, State Route 47, Kualapuu, Molakai (Maui County, Hawaii).jpg. As the filename says, it's on Molokai, but in Maui County.
Note also that National Register of Historic Places listings in Hawaii is organized by island, not by county. I see nothing but confusion if you continue. .     Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 15:59, 29 April 2015 (UTC
OK. I understand your point. It can be reverted, and I will do that. But just not probably today, because it's already taken me most of the week on Honolulu County - huge job there. Shoot for the end of the week on Oahu. And I also need to go back over Maui and Kauai, which I did as counties. Too bad you didn't see this to comment about a week or so ago. Maile66 (talk) 16:54, 29 April 2015 (UTC)
Thank you. No rush. .     Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 10:16, 30 April 2015 (UTC)

Did you get an answer to your question ?[edit]

Sorry I wasn't able to be more helpful, I hope you ended up getting an answer to your question at the central noticeboards I'd suggested ?

-- Cirt (talk) 15:11, 17 October 2015 (UTC)

Yes. Cirt The answer was that the template resets itself if erroneously saved information is deleted. Thank you for your time, anyway. Maile66 (talk) 20:04, 17 October 2015 (UTC)
Oh good I'm so glad others with more expertise on that were able to help you ! :) Once again, sorry I didn't know the answer on that one, -- Cirt (talk) 20:06, 17 October 2015 (UTC)
