Picture of the Year 2013 R1 Announcement[edit]

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open![edit]

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on . Click here to learn more and vote »

Thanks,

disambiguation[edit]

You're welcome, Michael. As for turning Rugby into disambiguation category, there's a little problem (not that I didn't think to that possibility, though). Rugby union and Rugby league are the names of the codes as we know them currently, but before 1895 there were no code splitting. Thus from 1823 to 1895 we didn't have either rugby union or rugby league but simply rugby. For this reason I wouldn't know how to disambiguate in a very effective way, because everything related to rugby before 1895 should be by logics catalogued under Rugby union, but calling it this way before 1895 wouldn't be correct. Hope that what I said makes sense :-) -- SERGIO (aka the Blackcat) 12:14, 9 February 2014 (UTC)
PS And yes, in Italy too when one talks about "rugby" they refer to "rugby union" because rugby league in Italy is pratically under the threshold of notability. It existed for about a decade in the 1950s, then has been revived in the last 5-6 years and there's even a Championship played mainly by amateur rugby union players from the lower categories of the Italian Championship in the latter's off-season.

Thanks so much, Sergio: I really appreciate it! Your point about "rugby" pre-1895 is well taken. Buona sera! Michael Barera (talk) 21:42, 9 February 2014 (UTC)

Categorizing aircrafts[edit]

Thank you for your help in this mammoth task! Just a small thing. I suggest to catgorize first by registration. It makes more sense. See my edit in File:Boeing 720-047B Air Malta 9H-AAO, AMS Amsterdam (Schiphol), Netherlands PP1168520944.jpg which revealed that there is another photo of this same bird. Best, Oyoyoy (talk) 17:38, 28 February 2014 (UTC)

Thanks, Oyoyoy. I always categorize by registration if the specific aircraft category exists, but you make a good point: I should probably create categories that don't yet exist as I categorize. Take care! Michael Barera (talk) 06:21, 1 March 2014 (UTC)

Empty ctgr[edit]

Why are you creating empty categories? Are you planning to fill them? Regards, --Klemen Kocjančič (Pogovor - Quick response) 18:39, 28 May 2014 (UTC)

Sorry, I'm halfway done with standardizing the Chevrolet-by-year categories. I should be done with them today/tonight. Michael Barera (talk) 22:31, 28 May 2014 (UTC)

What about others? Like Category:2000s Lincoln automobiles - from 9 subctgr, 5 are empty. Regards, --Klemen Kocjančič (Pogovor - Quick response) 05:46, 29 May 2014 (UTC)

Sorry, Klemen, there are a handful of categories I created that should be deleted. Mostly they are cases where I created pairs of vehicle and automobile categories where only the vehicle one was required. I'm working on it now... Michael Barera (talk) 06:16, 29 May 2014 (UTC)
Update: I've now successfully applied for deletion for all the empty automobile/vehicle-by-year categories that you brought up, with a few notable exceptions (six, to be exact). In all six of these cases, these were categories purposely created to enable the navboxes to function properly for the last few years of defunct makes via the setting of the navbox's "displayredlinks" parameter to "no". This issue has resulted in the creation of six empty categories, one each for Packard, Studebaker, Mercury, and Nash, and two for Oldsmobile (2000 and 2003). If there's a better way to preserve the functionality of the navboxes in question without these empty categories (but still suppressing the redlinks to categories that will never exist, such as 1968 Studebaker automobiles or 2009 Oldsmobile automobiles), I'd be all for it. However, I really want to make sure that these navboxes function properly. So, please make sure that they do before deleting these last few empty categories. Thanks! Michael Barera (talk) 06:49, 29 May 2014 (UTC)

"vehicles"[edit]

Sorry, but what is the meaning of renaming these categories? Is there a discussion somewhere? Also, your edits ruined a very well crafted (IMHO) setup for Category:Imperial 1973 and all other Imperial categories. Sorry if I seem aggro, but this comes across as entirely pointless. You could have at least shown some respect in copy pasting the contents of the original pages, instead of creating a senseless new header with a bunch of redlinks for model years that do not exist (and never will). mr.choppers (talk)-en- 22:40, 17 May 2014 (UTC)

Good point about the redlinks. I've been helping out User:W like wiki with standardizing the naming conventions and templating of all the vehicles by make categories. If you want to revert my edits, I don't mind, but either you or I should inform W like wiki about this redlink issue. I think the new templates certainly look better than the old ones, but you're right about the redlinks being senseless and in some cases, as with Imperial, they will never be filled in. Thanks for bringing this up. Michael Barera (talk) 22:52, 17 May 2014 (UTC)
Update: I've implemented the "displayredlinks=no" code into the new template, and the redlinks issue with the Imperial categories has now been resolved. Please take a look at it and let me know what you think. Thanks, and sorry for causing you the headache. After thumbing through the edit history, I now have an appreciation for the time and effort you put into the original navigation templates. Thank you for that contribution to Commons. Now, I think that I've replicated that functionality with the new navigation template. Again, sorry for the hassle. Take care! Michael Barera (talk) 23:35, 17 May 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for your quick response. It is definitely an improvement, although I prefer the layout I had created before (with the chassis code in the infobox, etc, etc). Be that as it may, I accept that it is worth it for the functionality of a standardized Vehicle-by-Year template. Cheers, mr.choppers (talk)-en- 04:25, 18 May 2014 (UTC)
I'm glad that you think it is an improvement. Feel free to take a look at the standardized template, {{VehicleModelYearC}}. If you can figure out a way to embed the chassis code in the infobox and add any other optional functionalities that you desire to the template without changing the "default" appearance, go for it. I really appreciate your comments and concerns, not just about Imperials but also how they apply to other makes. For instance, thanks to your feedback, we now have better-looking, redlink-free navigation templates for 1950s models of Hudson, Nash, and AMC vehicles. Thanks so much for speaking up about your concerns and helping improve the new navigation templates. Take care! Michael Barera (talk) 19:08, 18 May 2014 (UTC)
I thank you both not to feel angry about each other caused in my contributions. Best regards, --W like wiki (talk) 23:50, 18 May 2014 (UTC)

┌─────────────────────────────────┘
Thanks, W like wiki! User:Mr.choppers made a great point about the redlinks, and I think we have a working solution now. Take care! Michael Barera (talk) 23:53, 18 May 2014 (UTC)

Yes, and your idea with the redlink switch (the new 4th parameter in the template) is also nice. That shows me that it was worth to use the decade-navbox-template in the VehicleModelYear-template which makes changes like this more easy. By the way: because the old VehicleModelYear-Template was not anymore in use but had the better name without the unattractive "C" at the end i posed a rename request, which was already done thanks to user:Green Giant. --W like wiki (talk) 15:18, 19 May 2014 (UTC)
Thanks! Also, good call on renaming {{VehicleModelYear}}. Perhaps you could also ask to have {{BusModelYearC}} likewise renamed? And, once we have completed category standardization and the current (old) {{AutomobileModelYear}} is no longer in use anywhere, maybe would could have {{AutomobileModelYearC}} similarly renamed without the "C". What do you think? Michael Barera (talk) 18:26, 19 May 2014 (UTC)
I totaly agree. I already renamed Template:BusModelYearC. That was easy cause there was no Template:BusModelYear before. Thanks to your edits nothing links anymore to AutomobileModelYear-Template so I made a deletion request. When this will be done we can move AutomobileModelYearC to AutomobileModelYear. --W like wiki (talk) 13:44, 21 May 2014 (UTC)
{{AutomobileModelYear}} done, but with {{BusModelYear}} something went wrong, it seems that user:Taivo deleted the contrary. --W like wiki (talk) 14:08, 22 May 2014 (UTC)
Thanks, W like wiki. Hopefully it was just a mixup. We already have a couple of categories that use the bus template (Category:1959 Opel buses and Category:1960 Opel buses), but I know we haven't deployed it at real scale yet. Still, I'd really like to have it back. Hopefully Taivo can restore it. If not, I could just create it again. Thanks! Michael Barera (talk)
Yes, hopefully. By the way... one question with an example: If we want to change the classification of all the categories under Category:Automobiles by year from "Category:YEAR works" to - not yet existing - "Category:YEAR vehicles" an edit of the used template {{AutomobilesYear}} will change nothing, right? Not before I have updated all the categories where the template is used. And for updating I found no better way then first doing sthg like this followed by undoing the same.
Or do you have any better idea? If not it will mean that the use of these specialised templates (eg. {{AutomobilesYear}}) make changings more complicate because the described way of updating means two edits per page and on the other side if using the navbox-templates and categories directly a update could be done directly too which means just one edit per page. Thats what I found out and sources of pages like Category:1970s ships still looking slim. Hopefully you understand my Gibberish. What s your opinion about? --W like wiki (talk) 20:54, 22 May 2014 (UTC)

┌─────────────────────────────────┘
W like wiki, you don't actually have to make an edit to the categories to get them to "refresh" to reflect a new template-imposed category hierarchy. All you have to do is purge ("cache" auf Deutsch) the category, which can be done by clicking the "edit" button and then clicking the "save page" button on the edit form without changing any of the wikitext. This won't add anything to the revision history, which is also a plus. I like to think of it as a "hard refresh" (simply refreshing the categories unfortunately doesn't do the trick, as you've probably already noticed). I've had plenty of recent experience with this with {{AutomobileModelYear}}, which initially sorted under "YEAR automobiles" categories but now sorts under a new set of "YEAR automobiles by brand" subcategories. I hope this makes sense, but I can sure tell you that this approach works for me. Michael Barera (talk) 21:12, 22 May 2014 (UTC)

Hi Michael, thank u for your explanation! I ll try this these days, but unfortunately at the moment I don't have enough time. cu later, --W like wiki (talk) 00:38, 28 May 2014 (UTC)
Sounds good to me. Take care! Michael Barera (talk) 01:03, 28 May 2014 (UTC)
So you've been renaming a lot of vehicle categories? Perhaps you could rename the Edsel 1958, 1959, and 1960 cats too. ----DanTD (talk) 22:17, 28 May 2014 (UTC)

┌─────────────────────────────────┘
Great catch, DanTD. I'll take care of the Edsel categories as soon as I finish the Ford category, which is the last complete "by-year" category requiring renaming. I should have them all done by Friday or Saturday at the latest. If not, please feel free to ping me again. Take care! Michael Barera (talk) 07:01, 29 May 2014 (UTC)

Update: I've now renamed the by-year Edsel categories, DanTD. I hope that this helps. Take care! Michael Barera (talk) 05:16, 30 May 2014 (UTC)

File:South Bend GTW Aug 1962 2-21.jpg[edit]

Are you sure about the freight train identification of File:South Bend GTW Aug 1962 2-21.jpg? The cars behind and to the right look like passenger cars, but that could be a different train. Mackensen (talk) 22:23, 3 June 2014 (UTC)

No, I'm not. Now that I look at it more closely, I think you're right that it is a passenger train. I'll probably never get used to seeing Geeps pull passenger trains, haha. Thanks for the correction. Michael Barera (talk) 22:25, 3 June 2014 (UTC)

Logo's[edit]

I'm member of the team that i uploaded the logo from so there won't come any copyright claim. --Grottem (talk) 20:33, 31 May 2014 (UTC)

Sorry about that, Grottem. Just to let you know, the two logos still need to be properly licensed. Thanks! Michael Barera (talk) 04:41, 2 June 2014 (UTC)
It's ok seems to be right i can't supply the properly licence so I had the files deleted. Thank you for noticing. --Grottem (talk) 23:17, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

File:Clube do Remo 2014.png[edit]

The logo is in accordance with the manual image provided by the entity. The institution allows it to be shared in accordance with the instruction manual. Link to manual image: http://www.clubedoremo.com.br/download/manual-da-marca.pdf

Sorry about that, Jairo. Furthermore, please forgive me for not speaking Portuguese. Could you possibly put the exact text that allows for free usage (in Portuguese, and maybe also an English translation) in the "permission" field of {{information}}? That would be very useful.
Also, as it currently stands, the image is licensed under both a CC-BY-SA-3.0 license and released into the public domain, which offer two different levels of protection (or lack thereof) to the image; in short, "some rights reserved" v. "no rights reserved". The image should have only one license, and it should be fully compatible with the text of the instruction manual that links from the image.
I hope this all makes sense. Thanks for your contributions, and take care! Michael Barera (talk) 22:34, 9 June 2014 (UTC)

1954 Porsche 356 Speedster Prototyp[edit]

You're welcome Face-smile.svg
Just for the record, it's a pre A because:

  • the A model was introduced only in late 1955;
  • the lid handle is a small one without the Porsche logo;
  • there is no chrome bar on the rocker panel.

Regards,
BarnCas (talk) 03:06, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

Thanks! I really appreciate the correction. Michael Barera (talk) 05:05, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

Category:Natasha Kai[edit]

How did you do what you did on Category:Natasha Kai?--KAVEBEAR (talk) 03:30, 29 June 2014 (UTC)

First, I removed the interwiki links that are actually embedded in the Commons category with a simple deletion. Then, a little "add links" link (with what appears to be a pencil icon) appears under the "In Wikipedia" sidebar (to see what I mean, check out Chioma Ubogagu's category, as there is not yet a Wikipedia article on her). Then, a simple two-option pop-up box appears, in which the first entry is the language code (ie, "en" for English Wikipedia) and then the second is the name of the article in that Wikipedia (which allows for redirects, making it very forgiving). I just figured out how to do this a couple of months ago and am periodically updating Commons categories with this new method of storing and deploying interwiki links, which relies on Wikidata. It is very satisfying to see the appearance of additional Wikipedia articles that had previously "slipped through the cracks". I hope this all makes sense; it is really quite simple, even if my explanation has not been. Take care! Michael Barera (talk) 03:39, 29 June 2014 (UTC)
Ok thanks. This is a better way.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 03:46, 29 June 2014 (UTC)

Barnstar[edit]

Thank you very much for the barnstar. I've planned to cover some matchs of women's association football during the season 2014/2015. Pyb (talk) 19:10, 14 July 2014 (UTC)

Thanks again for your work. And, of course, I would love to see more of your photos on Commons! Michael Barera (talk) 22:54, 14 July 2014 (UTC)

Get to work[edit]

I started it HERE, but there are a few things remaining to be done... Cheers, mr.choppers (talk)-en- 01:27, 30 July 2014 (UTC)

Thanks, Mr.choppers. I've already implemented a "truck-by-model-year" template and laid the requisite groundwork for the supporting categorization structure. Now, it is just a matter of actually creating all the Ford-trucks-by-year categories. By the looks of it, though, this shouldn't take nearly as long as the automobile categories. Take care! Michael Barera (talk) 00:59, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
Quick question -- what should I do about coupe utility vehicles such as the Ford Ranchero? Should I treat them as automobiles, as trucks, or just simply leave them in the "vehicle" category? For now, I'm not going to move these images out of the vehicle categories, but if they should clearly be classified as either cars or trucks I'd be happy to go back and change the categorization. Thanks! Michael Barera (talk) 01:28, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
Update: Alright, Mr.choppers, I've finished all the Ford trucks. However, I have been taking a fairly conservative approach to the categorization, not categorizing any buses, vans, or coupe utilities as "trucks". I'd appreciate it if you have a look at what I've categorized (and what I haven't) and make sure that everything that should be categorized as "trucks" (and only those images) have been moved to the "trucks" categories. Thanks again for getting started on this project, and take care! Michael Barera (talk) 02:00, 1 August 2014 (UTC)
Sweet, thanks! I reckon that the utes best belong in the "truck" categories, but it's not like there is a clear and correct answer. Leaving it as is should be fine, and if anyone else wants to recategorize them - well, I'm not going to start an argument with them. Cheers again, mr.choppers (talk)-en- 02:24, 1 August 2014 (UTC)
Sounds good to me, Mr.choppers. I'll leave it as is. Michael Barera (talk) 02:26, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

Sort keys[edit]

Please do not alter sort keys like you're doing. The discipline is not "Football" which is a generic name. This is not en.wiki. The correct name is "Association football" and it must be sorted as such, as well as "Australian rules football" and "American football". -- SERGIO (aka the Blackcat) 09:46, 13 August 2014 (UTC)

That's fair. Sorry for causing the hassle. But could you go back and sort these categories in the "association football in [country]" categories with the asterisk ("*") instead of the space (" "), which was the chief standardization that I was actually doing. (Done now, don't worry about it). Also, while doing this, I noticed a few other other similar categories sorted as "football" or "soccer" instead of "association football" (typically corresponding to the local naming convention) that I did not change, so you may want to take a look at them and make sure they are properly standardized as sorted under the standard name ("association football"). Thanks, and again, sorry for the hassle. Michael Barera (talk) 17:54, 13 August 2014 (UTC)

Dodge Airflow & 1972 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia[edit]

Thanks for the thanks Face-smile.svg. I thought the Dodge deserved it's own category, so someone could easily add some more pictures of this beautiful truck. And in fact I did it Clin
I just hope someone will be able, at some stage, to put pictures that are not taken at the Henri Ford Museum (there is some, but none with a Commons-compliant licence).

For the VW Karmann, well, I do the same mistake every time before remembering it has a particular code name in VW catalog. While checking for that code for a car I just put in the generic Karmann category I saw "yours" and some others. So I cleaned up a little all of this.
Regards,
BarnCas (talk) 20:45, 30 August 2014 (UTC)

Merci! I really appreciate your help with categorizing my photographs properly, BarnCas. I'm making a mental note about the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia being a "Type 14", and hopefully I'll remember that in the future. And I also really appreciate the Dodge Airflow category (quick question: should it be categorized into Dodge trucks?). Take care! Michael Barera (talk) 15:27, 31 August 2014 (UTC)
You're right, so I put the truck in trucks Face-smile.svg. I just don't know if Dodge used the Airflow body only on trucks or also on cars. Anyway, the category can be changed again later if necessary...
By the way, don't forget to also make a note for the Type 34, for Karmann cars Clin.
BarnCas (talk) 12:13, 2 September 2014 (UTC)
Thanks so much, BarnCas! I'll try my best to remember the Type 34, but I've never actually seen one in person before (I live in the United States and I've only been to Germany and France once). I've seen a couple of the Type 14s, which aren't exactly common in the US but seem to be fairly collectible classics. Thanks again for your help with the categorization. I really do appreciate it. Take care! Michael Barera (talk) 03:01, 3 September 2014 (UTC)
According to en.WP:
"Although the Type 34 was available in most countries, it was not offered officially in the U.S."
Which may explain why you haven't seen one yet. As far as I remember, I saw "my" first one last June during a classic cars meeting. It was with a Type 14, but both have been customized as lowriders. So I am still waiting to see my first real Type 34 Clin
(My pictures of that meeting are ugly: I tried a particular setting on my camera that day, which was obviously not a good idea...)
See you!

CD Eldense image[edit]

Hi, i posted an image of my local football team. I read i must give a mail with a permission but... what kind of mail? I sent to the club owners the standart text https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Modelos_de_mensajes#Declaraci.C3.B3n_de_permiso_para_todas_las_peticiones and they told they dont understand so well what they had to do to allow it. Couldnt that procces be simplified?--FoxR (talk) 00:22, 14 September 2014 (UTC)

Michael Barera (talk) 00:43, 14 September 2014 (UTC)

I understand your language dont worry. I understand what you mean. The problem is i'm not sure if the manager of the club is concerned about all that weird laws texts. My question then is.. Could it work if i get just a simple e mail from the official club telling just a "Yes, i, owner of the club, allow the use of that image in wikipedia"? Or something similar. Thanks. --FoxR (talk) 00:50, 14 September 2014 (UTC)

Sobre el correo electrónico, creo que sí, pero necesitas usar OTRS. Michael Barera (talk) 01:11, 14 September 2014 (UTC)
