Thanks for your notice. I just forgot to add the license when uploading the file, and added it below the file minutes ago. I believe that the problem is solved now. --Howard61313 (talk) 04:38, 17 April 2017 (UTC)

Code issues in User:Mifter/monobook.js[edit]

Hi Mifter, I am a bored bot (this is kind of a computer program) that is watching the recent changes and tapping buttons like I did now.

Curious about the reason? Possibly not but I will tell you anyway:

  1. You edited User:Mifter/monobook.js. Glad to see you coding in javascript! Have you ever considered becoming a MediaWiki hacker?
  2. Though, that change appears to introduce 1 new jshint issue -- the page's status is now having warnings. Note that invalid or ambiguous code often has unwanted side effects like breaking other tools for you. If you cannot find out how to fix it, I suggest blanking the page for now.
  3. To help you understanding where the issues are, I have aggregated a report here and now. If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask users experienced in javascript writing for help. But do not ask the bot's operators (chronically overwrought) unless you suspect an error of mine. If you prefer not getting spammed by me, you can opt-out reports by adding {{ValidationOptOut|type=all}} to your user page. Good luck at Wikimedia Commons and happy hacking!

No souce[edit]

Hi I've noticed you adding {{No source since}} to images that have sources if u think that the source is not appropriate please add {{No permission since}} instead of the template hope you do the said thanking --✝iѵɛɳ२२४०†ลℓк †๏ мэ 08:07, 29 April 2017 (UTC)

Hello and thank you for your note. I'm afraid I don't fully understand the end of your comment however I generally have been using the No-Source tag for when the given source (own-work, etc.) is not credible as that appears to best represent the issue according to Commons:SOURCE with a credible source not given (the upload wizard generally defaults to "own-work".) On the other hand, I use the No-Permission tag when the uploader states something like "the Associated Press" as the author who in all likelihood did not authorize the image to be freely licensed. Neither appear to be good fits so I plan on just sending images in this scenario to DR for deletion moving forward. Thanks, Mifter (talk) 17:28, 29 April 2017 (UTC)

Hi, Random question but is there any way this bot can stay away from certain peoples uploads?,
The bot is great for those that are new to uploading or perhaps forget to include licenses but for me it's a complete pain in the arse - As I upload via videoconvert the licenses are never included and so it's very frustrating the moment I upload I get this bot not only tag my files but also leave me a message which obviously interrupts me and thus stops me from adding license info more quickly,
Not having a go at you or anything as it is a helpful bot but for those that know how to upload it's an inconvenience,
Anyway thanks, –Davey2010Talk 21:42, 8 May 2017 (UTC)

Hi @Davey2010:, the bot does not have the technical ability to filter files by the uploading user however, I can whitelist certain templates as "licenses." For example if during the upload you added a placeholder template in one of the information parameters, I could then whitelist that template which would have my bot skip all images with it so you can go back thereafter to add the actual license info. It would probably be best to choose a template name/create a userspace template with an inconspicuous sounding name so no one accidentally uses it for anything other than this but that would allow all your video uploads to be passed by my bot. Best, Mifter (talk) 17:01, 9 May 2017 (UTC)
Hi Mifter, First off I apologise for the rant above - At the time I was frustrated but moaning to you over it was pretty pointless so i apologise for that,
Ah okay brilliant, So would something like {{Davey2010/vctemplate}} (Template:Davey2010/vctemplate) be okay ?, For obvious reasons I've not given any details on the template,
Anyway thanks for kindly doing this it's a big help and is extremely appreciated so thank you so much :), Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 23:25, 9 May 2017 (UTC)
@Davey2010: Its no problem, I understand how it can be annoying to be consistently interrupted by messages. I've whitelisted that template, so now your video uploads should not be tagged by my bot. If for some reason they continue to be, let me know and I'll investigate further. Best, Mifter (talk) 02:17, 10 May 2017 (UTC)
Hi Mifter, Oh brilliant thanks so so much :), Have a great day, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 14:57, 10 May 2017 (UTC)

Your VFC installation method is deprecated[edit]

Hello Mifter, we are aware that using the old installation method of VFC (via common.js, which you are using) may not work reliably anymore and can break other scripts as well. A detailed explanation can be found here. Important: To prevent problems please remove the old VFC installation code from your common.js and instead enable the VFC gadget in your preferences. Thanks! --VFC devs (q) 16:23, 22 May 2017 (UTC)

Feature request: 10 minute delay for experienced users on MifterBot[edit]

Hi Mifter, I recently uploaded an image ([history]) using Special:Upload. I filled in the author/licence fields and uploaded, but somehow the image got uploaded without them. Anyway, I immediately started writing {{Information}} manually, but in the meantime I got a talk page message from your bot and your bot also put a template on the page, giving me an edit conflict to resolve too. Would it be possible for you to add a time delay for users with (e.g.) five previous uploads that you haven't flagged as problematic? It's reasonable to assume that anyone who knows what they're doing and just makes a hash of it doesn't need the bot getting in their way. Best wishes, GKFXtalk 13:41, 11 June 2017 (UTC).

Hello and thank you for your suggestion. I'll certainly look into the feasibility of adding such a feature. With the way the bot currently runs however (every half hour) I am not sure if such a delay would be possible without a relatively dramatic rewrite of the code but will see what I can do. Thanks, Mifter (talk) 00:43, 14 June 2017 (UTC)

MifterBot too fast[edit]

Hello, at least for uploads taken with bigChunkedUpload (cf. User talk:Rillke/bigChunkedUpload.js) your bot should wait a longer time before getting active, let’s say half an hour. These uploads are tagged characteristically and likewise have a characteristic edit comment – and there is at first no other information than the upload comment. See as example the file I was disturbed by your bot: File:Mariánský kostel - cropped version.jpg – after 10 minutes I have added the necessary information and would have been ever faster if there wasn’t the edit conflict with your bot’s action. I think, that back in past I sometimes also needed more time, but cannot tell exactly. If you want to research look in my edit history for the special tag (update: here is the link: Files uploaded by Speravir with bigChunkedUpload). — Speravir – 00:44, 20 September 2017 (UTC)

@Speravir: I think it is a reasonable request to ignore all uploads tagged "rillke-mw-js-bot" for half an hour. On the other hand, you didn't actually crop that file, ديفيد عادل وهبة خليل 2 did.   — Jeff G. ツ 01:53, 5 November 2017 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Regarding the tagging – that’s exactly my intention, and if I do not misunderstood Steinsplitter it is possible with Python (the language this bot programmed with). Regarding the missing crop – I know, the moment I realized my mistake I wanted to fix it, but was too late. (I realized while working some days later on a similar file and only noticed then my earlier mistake.) — Speravir – 02:08, 5 November 2017 (UTC)
Copied from COM:AN: Hi Speravir, I apologize for not noticing your message previously (I must have missed the notification myself). The bot runs every half hour (e.g. 18:00 UTC, 18:30 UTC, etc.) which is why if you update the file information quickly after an image is uploaded and the bot is between runs the bot will not notify you as when it checks the image it will see that it contains a license template (the delay is not related to the reliability of the bot rather to prevent undue stress on the servers.) In terms of uploads, I can offer you the same solution that I offered another user here which is to add a dummy template to your uploads that I can then whitelist so the bot will ignore everything you upload with that template (it can be something as simple as "User:Speravir/Placeholder" or the like). In general the goal of the bot is to prevent images without a license tag from slipping through as our policy requires that images be uploaded with one (from manual new upload patrol before my bot was reinstated I noticed a concerning amount of images without license being uploaded). I hope this helps and would be happy to address any other concerns or questions. Best, Mifter (talk) 03:11, 4 November 2017 (UTC)
In regards to a template, we could create a template titled with something like "BigChunkedUpload" which itself provides information about the upload script and links back to the script so that it is not surplusage being included in the file upload comment though I am currently thinking of what alternative ways we could utilize to whitelist these uploads (it might be possible to tweak the script to have it include such a template in the upload automatically without noting it in the upload comment). Best, Mifter (talk) 04:49, 6 November 2017 (UTC)
Creating such a template and adding this is in theory a very good idea. Unfortunately the script (apart from the upload tag) already adds itself such a string, a linked c:User:Rillke/bigChunkedUpload.js: (with space at end), and also templates aren’t expanded or substituted (or whatever the right term is) in the upload comment, their code is shown instead, cf. this random image, very often also an unexpanded information template can be seen like in this other random file (note that there is the full template; with missing end tags it wouldn't be sursprising). As far as I understood it is possible to read the edit history (I do not know the API, though), so you would see the upload comment and presumably also the special tag Jeff mentioned. — Speravir – 02:06, 7 November 2017 (UTC)
An idea I have: Couldn’t you generally change your bot in a way that it checks only files uploaded between 1 hour and half an hour ago? I noticed that there is an earlier complaint of another user above, so this would work for these cases, as well. — Speravir – 02:32, 7 November 2017 (UTC)
I might be able to set the bot to work at a longer delay (that introduces other issues with the way it is written) and I am also exploring if it is possible to tweak the upload script itself to include a template on the file page. Right now the script only inputs the user's description onto the file page but the script should be able to be tweaked to also automatically add a template directly to the file page in addition to whatever description is entered. License not accepted by bot[edit]

Hi Mifter, your bot is telling me to add a license on the picture here, and adding it is "not a valid license". Is there a problem w the link not stating the license? Actually, the image's link does not state everything, but it does the web page where the image belongs, I did not know how to work that out. Should I add manually that link or substitute it for the one stating so? ( --Iñaki LL (talk) 15:26, 18 November 2017 (UTC)
