Admin inactivity[edit]

Hello Miya, you might be interested in this discussion: Commons_talk:Administrators/De-adminship#Activity -- A9 (talk) 06:01, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

Hello, A9. Thank you for your information. I feel like opposing that request...if an admin is not so active, his/her each action is worthless?--miya (talk) 11:08, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

File names[edit]

Could you please move these file names? #1 and #2. They are not images of Wakuya. As for #1 image, it's Miyako. Please see this talk. Actually I e-mailed the US Navy and asked for correction of #1 image. As for #2, someone corrected the description and it's Otsuchi. Now the US Navy changed the captions. [1] and [2]. I think our file names should be corrected as they are misleading. Thank you. Oda Mari (talk) 15:45, 4 May 2011 (UTC)

Admins can move (rename) files. Please tag each files with Template:Rename with suggestion of new names:
{{rename|new name.jpg|reason for new name}}
Then I, or any admin available, can easily and correctly rename those files. Thank you.--miya (talk) 16:52, 4 May 2011 (UTC)
Following your advice, I added the template to the files. Thank you. Oda Mari (talk) 06:29, 5 May 2011 (UTC)

Counting votes on PTOY[edit]

Hi Miya, I'd like to thank you for the work you're doing for POTY and ask you a question: I went over first 130 votes over this nomination of my image. From all votes that were marked as failed only one was actully that failed. All the votes I listed below are OK. I am sure the same situation applies to other nominations. I believe the votes should be recounted only if the results are really close, and re-count will make a differnce between getting or not getting to the final round. Best wishes.

Hi, Mbz1. Thank you for telling me that! Some of the voters were counted as "fail" because they have "no global account, cannot auto-select an eligible wiki ". I'll check them again. --miya (talk) 18:36, 6 May 2011 (UTC)

I made Template:2010POTY/Vote/wiki using wiki paramator like "wiki=enwiki_p", "wiki=frwikisource_p" or "wiki=commonswiki_p". I'd like to add wiki paramator to Template:2010POTY/Vote.--miya (talk) 01:27, 8 May 2011 (UTC)

I rechecked these people and found the votes below are not eligible, strictly speaking because they are no global accounts and have no linking to or fro.--miya (talk) 01:08, 13 May 2011 (UTC)

Some thougts on the voting for the next year[edit]

Hi Miya, I'd like to share with you some thoughts about POTY 2011 voting procedure please. I believe the first round should not be divided by categories and the pictures that are chosen to the final round should be chosen not according to their place in a category but according to their place in all pictures contest. Otherwise the situation is rather strange as I discussed at the talk page before. Thanks.--Mbz1 (talk) 19:10, 16 May 2011 (UTC)

Hi, Mbz1. Do you know the system of POTY 2007? I think the galleries should be divided to categories so that voters would be able to compare similar images. But I can agree the latter part of your opinion, "the pictures that are chosen to the final round should be chosen not according to their place in a category but according to their place in all pictures contest", which would be more suitable for our hackers to operate their counting tools, too. Anyway Feel free to express your opinion in the preparation talk page for the next POTY. Cheers!--miya (talk) 02:18, 17 May 2011 (UTC)

Am I doing someting wrong?[edit]

Hi Miya, I hit "vote for this image" button 3 times. It takes me to this page, but my vote is not added. What am I doing wrong? Could you test it please? Thank you.--Mbz1 (talk) 03:00, 20 May 2011 (UTC)

Hi, Mbz1. It is because the votepages are protected. As there was a claim to the verification of the finalists and the voting has been suspended now (maybe until the re-verification of the finalists be completed). Sorry for inconvenience.--miya (talk) 03:36, 21 May 2011 (UTC)

hey Miya[edit]

no news @ the poty2011 pages & i figure you'd be the one person who

a) would still be plugging away @ the work

b) might actually know what's going on?

Lx 121 (talk) 11:01, 25 May 2011 (UTC)

a) I still love poty and would do anything if i am still expected to do.
b) I'm not sure, because i'm not good at understanding complicated discussion in English. Please ask Beria or Hoo what's going on. Thanks. --miya (talk) 16:06, 25 May 2011 (UTC)

Hello, Miya!

Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

POTY Top 3[edit]

How about the Top 3 images of 2010. 06:40, 23 June 2011 (UTC)

Hello, for the vote of this picture here Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2010/Final/File:Placid_death.JPG, I dont' understand why the 2 first invalid votes are eliminated... (see [12] for the first voter mardi_soir and [13] and [14] for the second one Tancrède ). Best Regards Khardan (talk) 18:46, 27 June 2011 (UTC)

Hi, Khardan. Maybe because mardi_soir is not a global account. As to Tancrède, I don't understand why. Please ask the person who checked them.--miya (talk) 02:55, 28 June 2011 (UTC) Yet I'll check the page once more. Thanks for your comment.--miya (talk) 06:43, 28 June 2011 (UTC)

POTY - Results[edit]

Hi miya.

Since that thing with double votes was bugging me, i decide to count then all to see if anything change. The result is here User:Wikitanvir/POTY2010#By_picture.

As you can see, the first 8 places don't change, and the 9 and 10 switch places if we count or not the doubles. So i believe we can announce the results, right?

Best regards, Béria Lima msg 21:43, 28 June 2011 (UTC)

Oh, I'm very happy to hear that. Thank you, Beria!--miya (talk) 00:19, 29 June 2011 (UTC)

US military photos[edit]

Hi Miya,
official US military images (marked for example as "U.S. Marine Corps photo by Cpl. Justin R. Wheeler/Released") are PD-USGov per U.S. law, regardless of what the Flickr page says. I have therefore reverted 4 of your copyvio taggings. --Túrelio (talk) 20:29, 24 November 2011 (UTC)

Hi, Túrelio. Surely you know the US laws better than me. Thanks.--miya (talk) 18:34, 25 November 2011 (UTC)

Yasu (talk) 14:56, 26 November 2011 (UTC)

--18:32, 26 November 2011 (UTC)
Yasu (talk) 15:58, 27 November 2011 (UTC)
--miya (talk) 00:46, 28 November 2011 (UTC)

Help needed[edit]

Hello Miya! If you find the time, could you please ask 5614 about this image? I can not figure out what category to add. 5614 speaks Japanese only and I am a JA-00 speaker/writer/reader :-)) Maybe you can find out what that image is all about? Thank you for your time! :-) --Hedwig in Washington (MAIL?) 18:42, 20 March 2012 (UTC)

5614 wrote this image was about "en:JR Freight Class DF200 double-heading (long-distance view)" in the description page. Perhaps Category:JR Freight DF200? :) --miya (talk) 01:24, 21 March 2012 (UTC)
Too funny, I did not even see the train. :-))) I should have looked at the image in full size. But still, I had no clue what it was all about. Thank you for your time! --Hedwig in Washington (MAIL?) 02:57, 21 March 2012 (UTC)
Funny, indeed. Only railway fans may find a train between the montain and the field in such a distance.--miya (talk) 03:05, 21 March 2012 (UTC)
Well, at least this image is taken care of. There +4k to go for 2010 without category. :) Thanks again for your help! --Hedwig in Washington (MAIL?) 15:35, 22 March 2012 (UTC)

Threshold of Originality in Japan[edit]

Cheers, if you're familiar with the copyright law of Japan your input might be highly valuable for the outcome of this request. Thanks, →Nagy 17:58, 28 April 2012 (UTC)

Sorry but I'm not familiar with Japanese copyright law about diagrams. Perhaps more help may be found at COM:VP/Ja. :)--miya (talk) 11:26, 29 April 2012 (UTC)

User:Cake6 - need a japenese speaking colleague[edit]

First of all User:Cake6 is no "problem user". I have just tried to explain Cake6 on his talk page the COM:OVERCAT-thing but I failed because he cannot speak sufficiently English and I not speak Japanese. Can you please help me and explain it to him? Would be great. Thank you! Greetings, High Contrast (talk) 13:25, 29 May 2012 (UTC)

Photo usage[edit]

Hi, I have been working on a small game (built around animal quizzes) and I wanted to let you know I have used one of your pictures.

I found your picture here:

And I attributed the picture like this: Miya with this link: and also added a link to the license:

I hope you are happy with it, please let me know if this is not the case. You can find the game here: Or through here:

Kind regards, Garfunkel Jansen

P.S. Thanks for taking the picture and making it available.

Hi, Garfunkel
File:Phalacrocorax carbo ja01.jpg? I'm happy with it. Thank you!
If you are looking for more birds photos, I recommend to visit our POTY galleries like birds/2011 or 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007. :)--miya (talk) 16:49, 22 June 2012 (UTC)
Yes, that's the one.
Ah, so many birds! I will surely use some more, thank you! Garfunkel Jansen (talk) 21:12, 22 June 2012 (UTC)

I'd suggest channeling POTD information through {{Assessments}} template. This would make it possible for us to quickly micromanage files. For instance this would allow us to manage which POTY finalists and winners (1st, 2nd, 3rd) do not have a POTD assigned to them. It would also enforce where the POTD notice would appear in relation to the other notices such as POTY. What do you think?

Thank you (and your User:タチコマ robot) for modifying round the assesment tags! Sorry for my english in IRC ambiguous/incorrect. I appointed finalists to be a potd (i believed they worth it) but was not sure whether i had posted the potd template in all of their description pages correctly. As to the design of assesment template I have no particular idea as far as they inform us necessary informations. Thanks. --miya (talk) 05:43, 25 June 2012 (UTC)
