You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.

Wikimedia Commons has a specific scope

Thank you for your contributions. Your image or other content, Rahanpur Paurashava, was recently deleted, or will soon be deleted, in accordance with our process and policies, because it was not, or is not, within our scope. Please review our project scope, but in short, Commons is targeted at educational media files including photographs, diagrams, animations, music, spoken text and video clips. The expression “educational” is to be understood according to its broad meaning of “providing knowledge; instructional or informative”. Wikimedia Commons does not contain text articles like encyclopedia articles, textbooks, word definitions and such. Each of these other kinds of content have their own projects: Wikipedia, Wikibooks, Wikisource, Wiktionary and Wikiquote. If the content seems to fit the scope of one of those other projects, please consider contributing it there. Otherwise, consider an alternative outlet. If you think that the deletion was in error because the contribution really was in scope, you can appeal it at Commons:Undeletion requests, giving a reason why it fits our scope to help others evaluate the matter. Dear NahidHossain,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2015 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the tenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2015) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1322 candidate images. There are 56 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category. In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 28 May 2016, 23:59:59 UTC.

There aren't any good ones on Commons, and I'd like to add visuals to w:2017 South Asian floods to help people understand the devastation. Hi. You refused twice to do something concerning this file, and it is probably because I was not clear enough in my explanation. File:Francois Poullain de la Barre.jpg and co:File:Pierre Bayle.jpg both contain the very same portrait. Important message for file movers

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
To perform file name swaps.
When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators.

প্রতিযোগিতা পাতায় দেয়া তালিকা থেকে বাংলাদেশের প্রাকৃতিক সংরক্ষিত অঞ্চলের যেকোনো সময় তোলা ছবি জুন মাসে জমা দিয়ে প্রতিযোগিতায় অংশ নেওয়া যাবে। প্রতিযোগিতায় একজন একাধিক ছবি জমা দিতে পারবেন। প্রতিযোগিতা শেষে প্রতিটি দেশ থেকে সেরা ১০টি ছবি আন্তর্জাতিক বিচারকদের কাছে পাঠানো হবে এবং সব দেশের ছবি থেকে সেরা ১৫টি ছবি আন্তর্জাতিকভাবে বিজয়ী ঘোষণা করা হবে। বিজয়ীদের জন্য আলাদাভাবে আন্তর্জাতিক ও জাতীয় পুরস্কার রয়েছে।

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on 1 May 2023, 23:59:59 UTC.

Wiki Loves Folklore is an annual photography competition that has been taking place since 2019. The competition has been organized in 168 countries so far, attracting around 6400 photographers who have collectively submitted approximately 80,000 photographs. Project Korikath is the organizer of Wiki Loves Folklore Bangladesh 2025.

Bangladesh made history in Wiki Loves Folklore last year when Azimronnie’s "Children playing in the rice mill" became the global champion in 2024! This year, Project Korikath is leading the campaign, with Jago News 24 as the media partner and Kishor Alo as the magazine partner. CUET Photographic Society, BUP Photography Society, and Eastern University Visual Archive Club have also joined us as club partners.

Join us now in this global celebration of the folklore of Bangladesh and compete for a share of over $6,000 in prizes. You can submit as many media files as you want!

The photograph of Mushfiqul Fazal Ansarey was taken on 27 December 2024 at the Krishibid Institute auditorium. The occasion was an event hosted by the Forum for Bangladesh Studies, where Mr. Ansarey was present on stage as a panel member. Well, I first came across his reporting to Mr. Miller at the White House during the mass uprising. However, I had largely forgotten about him until I recently encountered his name again while browsing the "Ambassadors of Bangladesh" article, as part of my routine work with WikiProject Bangladesh and WikiProject Copyright Cleanup. There, I noticed he was listed as the Ambassador of Bangladesh to Mexico. At that time, both the individual’s page and the Ambassadors of Bangladesh article lacked encyclopedic structure and did not adhere to the WP:MOS. I fixed those issues with the following two edits: 1, 2. The reason I was seeking clarification on this particular file was to determine whether it would be more appropriate to add the relevant photograph to the individual's biographical page or to the embassy article. This year is the nineteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2025 voting is open!

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2025 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year is the twentieth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favourite images featured on Commons during the last year (2025) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just five images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on 18 April 2026, 23:59:59 UTC.

Hi everyone,

Wikimedia Commons is pleased to finally announce the winners of this year's Picture of the Year 2025 contest! We had some truly incredible finalists to choose from, but the community has spoken.

Here are your top three winning images:

First place: The aftermath of an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City on October 9, 2023, leaving widespread destruction in the Rimal area.

I also want to highlight what an incredible turnout we had. In the second round, we saw a massive jump in both the number of users voting and the total votes cast. We had exactly 13,979 votes cast by 3,509 users! To put that in perspective, last year we had 7,403 votes from 2,837 users. It is amazing to see that level of growth and community engagement.

Thank you to everyone who voted, helped organize, and generally made the contest such a huge success this year!
