Please read rules[edit]

Please read the rules and guidelines before you make edits on the Featured Pictures. --AngMoKio 18:06, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

Huh? I did read the rules. Are you refering to the nomination of my image or to the featuring of the frog one? I apologize if I did make any mistake here, I tried to follow instructions as closely as possible.
It is ok - in the beginning such things might happen. I can only recommend, that you observe a bit how things are done here - and read the guidelines. You finished a voting (for the frog-pic) that just started. Here is the relevant part of the Featured Pictures guidelines"After the end of the voting period the result will be determined on day 10 after nomination (shown in the time-table below). So the voting period is 9 days (plus the hours until the end of day 9). Votes added on day 10 or after are not counted."--AngMoKio 19:08, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

Magnification[edit]

Would you mind clarifying how you reached a magification of 1.4:1? I don't know anything about the subject or formulae needed to obtain the ration. I tried to reason my way through, so my logic is most likely incorrect and convoluted, but here's what I got:

  • The spider is 2mm long (I'll assume that this is measured from the end of its abdomen to the tip of its front leg). I measured this length as approx. 1140 pixels.
  • The dimensions of the photograph is 1247 × 1876 pixels. This corresponds to approx. 2.188mm × 3.296mm, or approx 7.212mm2.
  • The dimensions of a Nikon sensor are 23.7 × 15.7mm, or 372.09mm2.
  • Magnification is size on sensor:actual size, or 372.09:7.212, or 51.581:1 (!!!).

Since I both am uninformed and have arrived at a very impractical conclusion, I hope you wouldn't mind correcting me. Thegreenj 19:05, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

To find the 1.4:1 (actually 2.1:1 if you take into account the 1.5 factor of digital sensors) has been obtained by simply applying the formula for extension tubes: mag = extension/focal. Here, 68mm of extension on a 50mm lens gives 68/50 = 1.36.
Some problems with your computation include the fact that the image was cropped into vertical orientation. The original resolution was 3039 x 2014. Also, computation for the macro ratio is done on lengths and not areas. Based on this, I get a ratio of 15.7 / (2014 * 2 / 1140) = 4.45, which is already closer. The difference is explained by the fact that I didn't measure precisely the size of the spider, and 2mm was an estimation of the size of the abdomen only. But we can find out that the length you measured was actually: (15.7 / 2.1) * 1140 / 2014 = 4.23mm. Mystery solved :-) --Nattfodd 19:34, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
Ah... much clearer. Thanks! Thegreenj 20:11, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Hi, I read your question at the Village pump about good maps of Sweden. Do you know about demis.nl? I have used it myself to get maps of Sweden and they are pretty good. Merci...[edit]

Don't leave[edit]

Please don't leave after being put down by the failure of your recent FPC and please keep on sending images. You already have a few images that are FPs and I agree that technical quality is often overused but it is often the only way to judge a good from a great image. So please don't go... Freedom to share 11:54, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for asking this, but it's a decision I've been pondering for a long time, after seeing how photos are rated in FPC, and not just a consequence of my disappointment for the latest photo. I just haven't made my mind yet about whether to keep contributing to commons, but I really think I'm done with FPC, unless there is a big change in mentality, which I don't see happening anytime soon. --Nattfodd 12:01, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

Keep it up![edit]

I read your last entry, and it is indeed a shame the way photograhy is judged here, and more of a shame to have Wikipedia lose you. I have slowed down a bit and the ONLY thing that makes me upload a pic her or there is the fact that there are legitimate people who will benefit from the work. Personally I've had some pictures of mine published originating from here, and that is much better reward than the opinons of numbnuts. BTW, I saw your page, great photography... Please visit mine at http://photo.net/photos/tomascastelazo. --Tomascastelazo 18:45, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

Heh, I was about to edit your talk page to thank you for your support (and not only here, in other cases as well). It's unfortunate that your vision of photography is not shared a bit more around here. I think I will keep uploading pictures when it makes sense for one of the pages of the wikipedias I'm contributing to (en and fr, mainly). What do you mean by "published originated from here", btw?
I took a look at your page, your photos look great (especially portraits, I'm so bad at that!), the page is just a bit overwhelming, I prefer a presentation with only one or two photos at a time, in a big size (like what pixelpost does). I really need to visit Mexico soon! --Nattfodd 18:56, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

Questions Image:Lascar summit.jpg[edit]

Who is the person in the photograph? How long was the hike to get there, how long did you stay and what inspired you to go there to begin with? -- carol 22:38, 28 October 2007 (UTC)

Hi Carol. The person in the photograph is Christian, our Argentinian guide. The hike took three hours of 4x4 to get to the starting point from San Pedro de Atacama, and then three hours of walking (from 4800m to 5500m). We stayed about one hour on the top (well, not really the top, 100m below it because it's too dangerous to get up there in case of an eruption) and were very lucky that there was almost no wind. According to Christian, you can usually not stay more than a couple of minutes due to the cold and the dangers of falling down in the crater. And what inspired us to do this in the first place was that it is the most active volcano of the region with a very impressive crater, it's pretty high, the hike is not too difficult (though not so easy either, especially with the altitude) and first of all, it's an unpopulated and not so touristic area/hike (while the rest of the San Pedro attractions are just crowded, which takes a lot of fun out of the desert). We didn't see any other human being for the whole day.
I hope it answers your questions :) Don't hesitate to ask for more if you are interested. --Nattfodd 09:23, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
Nope, no more questions. Unless you want to come up with a cute name for that giant bunny rabbit there and tell it to me. It is an interesting set of images. -- carol 20:49, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

--08:01, 9 February 2008 (UTC)

Question about Image:Kungsleden over Teusajaure.jpg[edit]

I don't understand this image. I have been thinking about it since it went in FPC and then it showed up in QI and all the thinking is not going to help me here, I think (and have been successful at thinking that much at least).

What kind of hiking trail has such a narrow and straight path? Perhaps if it was a rail or a track for something more mechanical, it would make some sense to me but as you describe it -- I just don't get it. -- carol 01:53, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

Hi carol, since the area is pretty wet during summer and the trail is quite practised, it can become very muddy pretty easily. To spare the trail (and hikers trousers), the people who manage it have put those planks in many areas where the earth is too soft. They are just designed for people to walk on, and are nicely spaced just for that purpose. I hope that solves the mystery :) --Nattfodd 08:20, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
Thanks once again for answering a question of mine about your photographs. The answer does solve the mystery except for the straightness and seamlessness of the planks.... How wide is it? -- carol 17:27, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
Well, it would be pretty annoying if they had used curved planks for the path :) As for seamlessness, it's just that from this angle, it's not very visible, but you have one of the supports about a quarter of the height, starting from the bottom. It's sticking out on the right, and you can see the change of planks at the same level. It's about 40 to 50cm wide, I'd say. --Nattfodd 18:37, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
