Categorising nl: pronunciation files[edit]

Hi Niels, I am honored to be your Commons-helper. :)

I just had a bit of a look at the structure of Category:Pronunciation. The categories for each language (eg Category:Dutch pronunciation) appear to basically just be big dumping grounds. So, I am not sure if it is necessary to categorise as you suggested, breaking up into province categories. Probably what I would do is dump them all in Category:Dutch pronunciation, then make an article/"gallery" page/whatever-you-call-it with links to the files. I think this would be a more succint way to summarise the information. And the article name can be in Dutch, too (it should also be in Category:Dutch pronunciation). Have a look at English pronunciation as an example to how you could set it out (also note the audio tag). You could also just link to them in the regular way, eg.

(in the case of media files, linking normally is the same as using : with images - it just links to the image description page).

I very much doubt people dive into the X Pronunciation categories looking for a file - I'm sure they check the relevant articles in wikipedias, and copy any links they find. So doing this will make Dutch pronuncation vastly more organised than any of the other folders. So, well done! :)

Anyway, yes, a bot should do the categorising - but the page will probably be have to be done by hand. With a bit of "search and replace" it shouldn't be too hard, I hope. That could be done while the files are waiting to be categorised. Now, as to finding a bot. Perhaps you could contact one of the owners of the bots listed here: Category:Wikipedia bots? (I'm sure there are other bots not listed here, but this is a start, at least).

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any more questions. :) cheers, pfctdayelise (translate?) 04:52, 13 March 2006 (UTC)

Also, I just found Audio2, which you might prefer the style of. pfctdayelise (translate?) 05:09, 13 March 2006 (UTC)

Hmm, I'm not sure if I understand all of your suggestions, but I've just created Category:Dutch pronunciation (municipality names) as a subcat of Category:Dutch pronunciation. I intend to have someone with a robot (from the list you so kindly provided) put all the files in this subcategory. Good idea or not? NielsF 05:16, 13 March 2006 (UTC)

Update: I can't see my subcategory in the category:Dutch pronunciation. What's wrong? NielsF 05:30, 13 March 2006 (UTC)
You couldn't see the category because category:Dutch pronunciation is overpopulated (has more than 200 members). This is a bug which is very annoying. To force your category to list on the front page (hopefully), I changed it like this (on your category's page):
->
That forces it to list under the "*" rather than "D" where it would be trying to. If you clicked "(next 200)" a few times, you would have seen your subcategory. You can also always see all the subcategories by using a tree tool: [1]
What you're planning to do will be fine, although I personally think it is easier and more informative to display more information in an article form. The bad thing about that, though, is that they don't automatically update. So it's six of one, half a dozen of the other. :) pfctdayelise (translate?) 06:45, 13 March 2006 (UTC)
Seeing how the article worked out, I must say that I find it to be the most elegant and simple solution (article listing all files under a special subcat), so I'll forget about the whole bot-thing. Made some improvements to the article (2 provinces weren't properly listed and added multilingual description). Thanks very much for your help! Cheers, NielsF 16:41, 13 March 2006 (UTC)
Although in general it is a good idea to have both (in case your image, usually, gets removed from a gallery page), with pronuncation files, and I guess this is a very limited set that will ever be needed (not like anyone can just add a new one!), I guess it's not so important. Teamwork, eh?! :) pfctdayelise (translate?) 17:48, 13 March 2006 (UTC)
(Also, did you know that Australia was called New Holland for a time, when it was first discovered by Europeans? And of course, there's our close neighbours, New Zeaeland... :)) pfctdayelise (translate?) 17:50, 13 March 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, knew that (you forgot Arnhemland by the way :-)). I'm a history enthusiast (especially when it comes to Dutch history). Back to business: I saw this [2] on my watchlist, does that mean that you still intend to categorise the files? If so, will you put a request out to a bot operator or would you like me to do it? By the way, good move removing the TOC, the map to the right is by far better and easier to use. Cheers, NielsF 20:08, 13 March 2006 (UTC)
Yes, I would categorise them. Yes, I would like you to contact a bot owner, please. :) Or if you don't want to, let me know, and instead I will delete the category and just put the article in Category:Dutch pronunciation. pfctdayelise (translate?) 02:51, 14 March 2006 (UTC)
Allrighty then. I'll contact a bot owner after Quichot has uploaded all the correct files. Thanks again for your help! NielsF 03:51, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Horatius Cocles.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use GFDL-self to release it under the GFDL or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Re: Commons and nl: again[edit]

Hiya, sorry to trouble you with this, I've been an admin now for just about a month and a bit now on nl.wikipedia, but I still see a lot of what I think is commons-related activity done by anonymous users, who don't respond to messages on their talk pages and in general don't even try to make an effort to use your translations or something like that. I'm all for Commons, because figuring out copyright status on a local project is hard enough and I think that Commons should be at least a little bit more qualified than us locals ;-), but what's so hard about at least making an account with at least a redirect or other direct link to Commons on other projects? It takes 1 minute of work for each account, but at least makes it easy for people in a local project to identify with the user. I personally use a Firefox toolbar, which makes it even easier, but with cookies enabled, if you have an account on a project, it's just 2 seconds of work (provided that it's wikipedia, not lohipedia :-)). Just my two cents on this issue. NielsF 03:43, 18 May 2006 (UTC) (reposted here from User talk:pfctdayelise to keep the discussion in one place)

Hey NeilsF... thanks for your message. This is not an easy issue. I am not inclined to ask Commons people to register on all wikipedias, for the following reasons:

 • the universal login is supposed (!) to be coming soon, which will remove the need for this.
 • there are simply too many projects for it to be realistic for Commons users to register in them all. Over 100 wikipedias, then there's the wikibooks, wikinews, wikispecies, wikisource...
 • there is no way we could require/force Commons users to register local accounts. Even if we stated that they had to, there is nothing stopping them from ignoring us and continuing as normal.

However none of these points overrides the right of your project to run it as you see it. For example you could:

 • Develop and use a boilerplate "if you are from Commons, please identify yourself/explain what you're doing/use the translations" template to put on IP talk pages.
 • Make it a policy to revert any changes that are not explained (I once had a change reverted, even using a translation and a link to my commons page!)
 • Block any repeat offenders who do not respond to your requests

I think these are reasonable actions that you are well within your right to do regardless of what the action is and whether or not they're a Commons editor.

If it is the PNG/SVG replacement thing again, I would simply revert and semi-protect any such changes. If it's images being removed because they're going to be deleted, well there are two things here: one, if you revert such changes, you'll probably end up with a redlink. Two, it's probably a Commons admin doing this, so if the image is deleted soon after, you can probably assume it's them and then contact them directly on their Commons talk page to ask them to identify themselves and explain their actions. (The direct approach is usually the most efficient, I've found, although it is quite a bit of work for you. If you want to me to approach people, I don't mind.)

What do you think? I think at the moment this problem is easier to resolve at your end than ours, because you simply have more control over what happens in your wiki than we do over all wikis.

cheers, pfctdayelise (translate?) 04:37, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

Hello Niels - please have a loot at CommonsTicker - that tool will hopefully help to integrate commons activity more with "local" projects, and allow local users and admins to do some of the cleanup work required. Regards -- Duesentrieb(?!) 11:36, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

Ok. Thanks for your answers ptfcdayelise & Duesentrieb. It's just that nl.wikipedia is the 6th largest wikipedia, and it's growing quite fast at the moment, so we're kinda swamped with patrolling anonymous edits etc. I think that Duesentrieb's tool might come in very handy, I'll certainly keep track of the test on German Wikipedia. On a completely different note: where can I request interface translations for the dutch interface of Commons? Some of the tabs like edit, discussion etc. are completely different from nl.wikipedia, which might create some confusion. NielsF 22:23, 18 May 2006 (UTC)
It's in live testing now: de:Wikipedia:CommonsTicker. Enjoy :)
As to interface strings: find them on Special:Allmessages, and make a nice list of name -> desired value somewhere. Then grab hold of an admin and threaten/bribe him or her into changing all the messages :) -- Duesentrieb(?!) 22:51, 18 May 2006 (UTC)
If you have any other issues you want to raise, well, I'll put your talk page on my watchlist. :) CommonsTicker is indeed a great development. pfctdayelise (translate?) 03:00, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

re: Special:Contributions/Otto Normalverbraucher[edit]

I never reply on my own talk page :)

He seems to be nominating images that he himself has uploaded, so I guess his understanding of the copyright law has changed. Since he appears to be a German speaker I will ask a German-speaking admin to contact him. pfctdayelise (translate?) 01:05, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

Oh, and CommonsTicker is indeed going to be super awesome. I hope NL.wp is a very early adopter! :) --pfctdayelise (translate?) 01:13, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

I do though :-P. "We"'ve already put in a request for the ticker with Duesentrieb along with zh: it: gl: and es:. I'm looking forward to implementation of the tool, because it makes commons more transparent for all users, which can only be a positive development. It's a pity there's such a low participation from nl.wikipedia, but as soon as the "SVG-pushing thing" is over in people's minds and CommonsTicker is implemented I'll be happy to show nl.wikipedia users the way to Commons. Heck, I might have to become an admin here! Cheers, NielsF 01:20, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
On another note; is there a contribution limit and/or months active limit for becoming an admin here? It's just that I don't have enough time at the moment and I don't have enough knowledge of Commons procedures, but I know/understand at least 5 languages, so I might come in handy? NielsF 01:29, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
I think you would make a great admin. If you want me to nominate you, I would be more than happy to (or you might prefer to self-nominate). You have shown great patience and willingness to work with others over the whole NL.wp saga. The only formal requirements are 100 edits and 2 months, which I imagine you passed a long time ago. Many admins do quite little work here (which is sad for us, but all I mean is you don't have to suddenly spend all your time here). We recently accepted User:Svdmolen as an admin here, and he is a Dutch speaker. More are definitely, definitely, welcome. And it would be quite handy to have your Italian skills - at the moment it is more or less poor User:Red devil 666 all on his own!
As always if you have any questions about policies or procedures I am more than happy to try and help - it is also good because it lets us know where our documentation needs improving. cheers, pfctdayelise (translate?) 02:16, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

Art painting duplicates[edit]

This has cropped up a few times. They are notoriously hard to choose between (for example, I think Image:GuidoNessus.jpg is really garish). I would not use any tag at all (because we don't have a suitable one), just simply write on both of them: "A different image of this painting is available at Image:Example.jpg." Also in this case the one you tagged as "bad" has a much, much higher resolution than the other one. So it's easiest to just not make any choice at all and leave that up to the local editors. pfctdayelise (translate?) 16:40, 1 June 2006 (UTC)

Hello. Congratulations. You are now a Wikimedia Commons administrator and you now can place user admin on your user page. Don't loose the fun with these admin rights. ;-) If you have any questions for example on deletion guidelines just ask me (I am as well on IRC in #wikipedia-de oder #wikimedia-commons channel most of the time). By the way Category:Against policy needs urgently some help on reducing the number of copyvios awaiting their deletion. ;-) Have fun, Arnomane 22:15, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

Help on image upload : search, taggs, categories, galleries, ....[edit]

Hi Niels,

last time you asked me to put category and change the name of the pictures I had uplaoded. It s done and I have put other ones. But some stuff troubles me:

1) what is the difference between categories and galleries ? I only put a category tag to my pictures. there are aslo articles in Commons. What the difference with the articles from Wikipedia

2) how does the search engin function : it seems to me very complicated and very little successfull. typing for example "venise" (= "Venezia" in french) give me nothing, or redirect me on a page with search galleries categories and lots of other stuff.

3) suppose I m wrtting an aricle in Wikipedia on "Venise", how can I choose from the picture from commons ?

4) appart the untagged pictures, do we found the whole pictures related to a subject in the category of this subject ?

5) I had to create an other account for commons (different from wikipedia) is it normal ?

6) I put here the screenshot of my contributions on Commons

My contributions.PNG

. what does (top) mean ? why are some pictures twice in the contributions ?

Thanks a lot

You say in your profile you like to help, I might take it for granted !

see ya

--Bichot from Paris Wiki Commons 01:07, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

I checked again: looking for "venise" in wikipedia, I found the article. At the bottom there is a link to Commons "Venise". But in ths big category/gallery/article (?), my picture do not appear  !

thx

--Bichot from Paris Wiki Commons 01:26, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

Okay, long question, long answer:

 1. ) Categories and articles (also called galleries) both have the function to group images of the same subject together. The difference is that categories are automatically generated by searching for the [[Category:... tag in image pages, and form a hierarchic structure together with other categories, so they are searchable. Articles/galleries have to be manually edited. The difference with Wikipedia articles is that Commons-articles are a way of collecting pictures together, not primarily for giving encyclopedic information.
 2. ) Yes, the search engine works badly. That's a well-known problem also with Wikipedia. I've created a redirect Venise, which brings you automatically to Venezia. Another way to search for images is via the category structure. For example you could go to Category:Italy then to Category:Cities in Italy, then to Category:Venezia. Note: all category names are in English only (although geographical names are usually in their "motherlanguage")!
 3. ) You would have to search Commons for pictures in Category:Venezia or Venezia, it's sometimes hard, I know.
 4. ) Ideally, yes. Unfortunately not everyone categorizes his/her pictures or puts them in galleries. Sometimes there are also duplicate categories and/or articles which contain some pictures.
 5. ) Yes this is normal, unfortunately. I have about 12 accounts for different wikipedias and Commons. There's a project going on called the "single login" which would eliminate this need (however your username should be the same on each wiki and you should set an email-address for the account).
 6. ) Top means that you're the last person to have edited the page. Some pages appear twice or more times because you have made more than one edit on those pages. Note that your contributions is not the same as your uploads. You can view your uploads by going to "My contributions" and clicking on "Logs" behind your username. There's also an external tool: [3] which gives your pictures as a gallery.
 7. ) Your image doesn't show because you categorized it, but you're looking at the article. In Category:Venezia your images do show up. If you want your images to show up in the article, you have to edit Venezia#San_Giorgio_Maggiore and add your pictures there.

I hope I've answered your questions. If you have any other questions feel free to pose them in French as I assume that's your native language (although I might answer in English if the questions are difficult, I understand French very well, but writing it is more difficult for me). You can also set the interface to French by specifying this in Special:Preferences under language, if that's more convenient to you. Au revoir, NielsF 11:46, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

Thanks a lot for your help. As you answer quickly and well I may ask for your help in the future again ;-) I am french that s right, but writing in english can t be bad for me. I can also write in german ( right now I m studying in karlsruhe, germany). take care. --Bichot from Paris Wiki Commons 08:29, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

Re: Category:Dutch pronunciation (municipality names)[edit]

Hey,

AWB is probably set for Wikipedia only. Try asking the developers, I can't imagine it would take much to adapt it to Commons.

Although, I actually don't see a huge amount of value in sorting pronunciation files. I mean it would be useful, Category:Dutch pronunciation has over 200 items, but I don't get the impression that people browse sound-file categories in the same way they do image-file categories (not that there is a strict distinction, but most files in most cats are images, and most files in Pronuncation cats are sound files).

Try it out, though, and if AWB is useful let me know and I'll try it out too. I haven't used it... maybe our category maintainers will find it helpful. pfctdayelise (translate?) 06:12, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

What I'm saying is that I made a mistake by uploading those pictures in the first place, because they didn't belong on the Commons. It's not just a mistake, either -- it's a violation of policy. Violations of policy have to be punished, even if I'm the one violating policy. This is not sarcasm -- it's a statement that the policies must be enforced. --Elkman 03:49, 2 July 2006 (UTC)

Commons-l subscription[edit]

Hello NielsF,

as per Commons talk:Administrators, I am asking all admins to subscribe to commons-l, a mailing list for Wikimedia Commons policy and project discussion. Since many admins are only on Commons infrequently, this is a good way to alert people about important happenings. The mailing list is nominally multilingual, but predominantly English.

If you are already subscribed to commons-l, I apologize for bothering you, and you are free to ignore this message. If you don't want to use your regular e-mail account, feel free to leave me a message, and I can send you a GMail invite. Traffic on the mailing list is relatively low, and we do not expect admins to read all messages to the list, but it would be nice if you could check on it at least every few weeks. Thanks for your time,--Eloquence 23:07, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

I just registered after the message in the VP a few days ago. I'll look forward to exchange views on the list. Cheers, NielsF 01:47, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

Re:Vancouver[edit]

See User talk:Cacophony. Apparently, he was changing the category names without discussion or consensus. Also, the old category ("Vancouver, British Columbia") is a redirect to "Vancouver" anyhow, so I'm bypassing the redirect and using the already-established category name. degraded vs. demoted[edit]

Which do you mean exactly? (Re: recently "degraded" to admin status.) ;) Siebrand 12:17, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

Is there a difference, I'd say they were synonyms? Both mean that I was lowered in rank, don't they? NielsF 13:00, 11 July 2006 (UTC)
Letterlijk wel, in context betekent 'to degrade' meer 'aftakelen'. Dat zou zonde zijn ;) Siebrand 07:23, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
Toch maar even nagekeken.
NielsF 12:17, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

Concrete Cows[edit]

Thank you for your message. (a) I thought that PNG was preferred, though I didn't know why. (b) The main reason is that I don't like that personally identifiable information is exposed with the JPG format. If this can be deleted, then the PNG can go. [You can reply on Commons, I will check back] --Concrete Cowboy 16:48, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

Yes, it was the EXIF data. So please delete the PNG and I will update the links so they point to the JPG. --Concrete Cowboy 12:14, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

SVGs[edit]

Please stop editwarring over this. Can you both agree on the use of vector version available or just inserting a plain text link (An SVG version of this image is Image:xxxx?)? Thanks in advance. NielsF 23:49, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
In fact, I was just about to type a custom version of vector version available. —Lifeisunfair 23:52, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

Atomium[edit]

Groet, Joris1919 00:17, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

Vatican[edit]

Verkeerde foto geupload[edit]

Hi Niels,

NielsF 22:30, 22 July 2006 (UTC)

Speedy lijkt me prima, bedankt!

Flags[edit]

Sorry, im moving then to the right category.

Severino666 01:30, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

No, I've uploaded flags of states too.

Severino666 01:36, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

Right, thanks for the help. Severino666 01:43, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

It's easier for me to upload all then in that category. I will organize then on the subcategories later. Severino666 02:07, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

Grazie e buon lavoro, --XXXL®? 13:20, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

OK, l'ho fatto. Puoi anche caricare la versione corretta se clicci su (is that correct? en:by clicking on) Carica una nuova versione di questo file alla pagina dell'immagine, se l'immagine sia rotta, o quando hai soltanto sbagliato il nome dell'immagine ma l'immagine stesso è buono, inserisci lo template badname: Image:Nome dell'imagine col nome corretto. Anche a te buon lavoro, NielsF 13:46, 23 July 2006 (UTC)
Grazie Niels. "Clicchi su" è corretto :) Ciao, --XXXL®? 16:14, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

A presto.--FlagUploader 14:04, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

Si, lo vedo adesso, stranissimo. Mi dispiace anche che fosse necessaria proteggerla. Ciao, NielsF 14:10, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

Re: Last days of Pompeii[edit]

Hey NeilsF,

Gah! Like cockroaches, some debates never die!!

The reason we can't put an OTRS ticket # there is because no OTRS ticket exists. Presumably the permission is in Danny's private email somewhere. When the last debate happened, I contacted him on meta: for more explicit permission, just to end it, and he ignored me. So, make what you will of that. (Maybe deleting them will get his attention, but you might get desysopped and banned as well. :P) --pfctdayelise (translate?) 05:14, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

Flags & Lame[edit]

Hi, - The flickrlickr uploads were not caught up in the usual licence changing problems this time - they were flagged because they are art/statue/sculpture in a public place in the US, which I didn't realise was not ok (since it is ok in the UK & most of Europe). I don’t know why they haven’t been deleted yet, since I haven’t disagreed with the problems. The flag situation just seemed bizarre to me! The first discussion was fair enough, regular dispute about a colour, but the second time it came up they both had their own versions and yet were reverting each other to the point that the images had to be protected! That just made me smile! I would certainly support a commons lame page - I am sure there have been plenty of other disputes on crazy little things that have happened in the past that deserve to be documented! Charging Bull: Public art ?[edit]

Hello, NielsF. Thank you for letting me know of the problem with the image of the w:Charging Bull that I've uploaded. May I ask why ? I don't understand why it's not in the public domain considering that the creator deliberately dumped it on the public as an "guerilla art". I'm quite puzzled. -- PFHLai 16:54, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

To the best of my knowledge, a public work of art in the US is still protected by copyright, see Commons:Derivative works and User:Alx/Sandbox#USA (there are some useful links there). For buildings there's an explicit exemption in the copyright act, but not for sculptures. I don't think that the way of dumping it on the public matters. But hey, IANAL, just acting to the best of my knowledge and according to Commons policies; if you can refute this, please do so, because I hate deleting good quality pictures. NielsF 17:40, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the explanation. It's gone now. Never mind. (I may re-upload if I can come up with a legal way around the copyright problem.) -- PFHLai 21:51, 6 August 2006 (UTC)
Ok. Let me know if you find one... NielsF 22:38, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

Will you arbitrate?[edit]

Hey NielsF,

I have a request. :) As you may have noticed there is some conflict between User:Juiced lemon and User:Martorell about the name of Catalan-related categories. I think it won't be solved between them so I suggested that they accept a 3rd party to act as arbitrator. (Commons:Village_pump#Arbitration.3F) An arbitrator should listen to what both sides have to say and make some comment about what future action from both of them should be. Both parties have to agree to abide by what the arbitrator says, even if they disagree with it.

I think you are a fair administrator and will listen to both sides evenly, so I want to request that you act as arbitrator. If you think you can do it, please let me know. :)

In my opinion the arbitrator should:

 • have a good understanding of English (or the discourse language to be used, at the moment I think it's English)
 • be honest and upfront about their pre-existing opinions and biases on this matter. Therefore, if you already have some strong opinions about Catalan politics, I hope and trust that you will tell me and decline this request.
 • read existing debates on talk pages, at Village pump, etc
 • read the corresponding Commons policies - and this histories (policies are quite open to change here, not fixed in stone)
 • take further input from the parties if they want, or possibly ask them questions, something like that
 • make recommendations for both principal parties' behaviour in future - which they must abide by, if they agree to the arbitration at the start
 • probably some other stuff I haven't thought of, but I'm just making this up so far, so, yeah.

Let me know what you think. It is not really fun or easy but I have an impression that you are even-handed and will take both sides' concerns into consideration. cheers, pfctdayelise (translate?) 00:26, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

Hello,
I am not surprised that you are confused because the policy is not that clear. So I think that is OK. Martorell is indeed an admin and a higher standard of behaviour can be expected. Nonetheless, an arbitrator is not there to judge behaviour. Someone can be doing the right (correct) thing, but carrying it out in a way that doesn't conform to wikiquette. It's kind of a separate problem. Admins of course should not use their power to carry out personal vendettas or goals, but to enforce policy in a reasonable way. Edit warring is always bad, but you generally would think at least one party has to be correct.
I guess I see arbitration as finding a situation that satisfies the concerns of each party. What is the aim each party is trying to fulfill by changing a category name? Are there other ways of satisfying those aims? (I hope so, otherwise we are at a deadlock. :)) Does nl.wp have an arbitration system? en.wp does, but I am not very familiar with it. pfctdayelise (translate?) 05:41, 6 August 2006 (UTC)
Good. Consider yourself arbitrator, then. I would make a subpage (of Commons:Administrators or your userpage) to collect arguments and ideas etc.
I think it is best to conduct it in English, since I am pretty sure it is a second language of both Juiced lemon and Martorell... that's the "fairest" thing to do. I think Martorell will accept you. I don't see any reason why not. pfctdayelise (translate?) 08:11, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

Camera[edit]

De enige info was: Public domain image from crimethinc, published intentionally with no copyright notice by crimethinc. com.
NielsF 13:41, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

re: Alno's RfA[edit]

User:Arnomane was around most recently, you could try asking him. Don't know when he'll be in next, though. The whole reason we're electing new ones is because the current ones all went away at the same time. No matter how hard I plead, I can't convince people who are absent to do as I say. :) Anyway, I doubt it will succeed now, so I'm not too worried. cheers, pfctdayelise (translate?) 02:07, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Andre responded on the mailing list, whereas he's not active at all around the wiki. So I suggest to try emailing him requests in future. He seems amenable to them. :) cheers, pfctdayelise (translate?) 02:27, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Hi! I deleted this image because a google translation (admittedly not ideal) of the terms page starts: "The images contained in this page Web are freely available for all the particular users who wish to use them with nonlucrative aims." I interpret this to mean that images from this site are not freely available for commercial use—if you disagree I don't mind if you undelete the image and continue with the deletion request. Locked Split category: Anasazi/Ancient pueblo people[edit]

As you may recall, you locked these two categories from editing after I made the notification on Vp that an edit war was going on over them.

There has been no further arguments made about why the naming chosen by English WP should not be used. Category talk:Ancient pueblo people, Category talk:Anasazi, and en:Talk:Ancient Pueblo Peoples.

Since the term "Anasazi" is recognized as pejorative in the fr, nl, en, and es wikis, and due to the NPOV policy of Commons, Anasazi is not an appropriate category name on Commons.

There have already been complaints about not being able to find all contents of this category due to the split. I propose that the page be unlocked so that I may restore the category to Ancient pueblo people. Hopefully the opposing party will have cooled off and had a chance to reflect on the arguments on these talk pages. -Mak 16:56, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

It actually was me that added the info on nl: after the dispute here, but hey. I've unlocked the categories, but'll keep watching them. NielsF 17:30, 17 August 2006 (UTC)
I am not sure what the next step is if he reverts, but here goes. -Mak 22:09, 17 August 2006 (UTC)
The other party has re created the split category, refusing to move all of the contents of the category. Regardless which party has the preferable name, this status is unacceptable. Do you wish to involve yourself in this dispute, or shall I solicit for assistance towards resolving this on VP? -Mak 17:17, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
I'll involve myself to a certain extent: I'll move the articles into one category and make a soft redirect of Anasazi. Furthermore I'll try to convince Huebi to accept the status quo (that everything is ancient pueblo) but won't protect anymore because it's useless and I'll ask another admin to look at it.NielsF 21:51, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
I will accept arbitration by any admin. I think there ought to be generalized practice on commons for resolving this class of naming issue. Thanks- I won't bug you any more about this.-Mak 03:00, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

Re: Question[edit]

Because the original author agreed to the deletion ( User_talk:Erin_Silversmith#deletion_request_image_.22horusauge.22 ), it seems OK to me. She might also think the deletion time is 5 days not 7, I think it's 5 on Wikipedia. I don't see what could be controversial about this... so I don't see a problem with it. But in general, I agree, closing debates one has opened is not a great habit. pfctdayelise (translate?) 04:34, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

Deletion[edit]

Please delete Image:Sistema_lacrimal.gif. It has been properly listed for over a week and the consensus is to delete. — Erin (talk) 03:53, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

I'm sorry, but I'm trying to solve a (potential) conflict, you might be right in that the image should be deleted but there's someone contesting that and I feel contributors are worth more than one .svg. NielsF 03:59, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
It's a matter of policy. — Erin (talk) 04:18, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
Quoth Erik Möller (citing revised Commons policy): "'Obsolete' images should indeed no longer be deleted except where they're orphaned and there's clearly no opposition." (diff)Lifeisunfair 05:54, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
Are you going to spam that irrelevant quote everywhere? — Erin (talk) 06:38, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
I disagree with your assertion that the quote is irrelevant, and I'm merely responding to comments that you posted within multiple discussions that appeared on my watchlist (which is fine, as these pages are likely to be read by different people). —Lifeisunfair 07:19, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

Very very thank you NielsF, to understand me! The solution that I made for now is upload the image on http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imagem:SLoriginal2.png but I know it isn't a good solution. But, she cannot delete image there. I am just very sorry for Commons and other portuguese projects, because it lost a quality image replaced by a bad-copy svg version. I don't let my opinion again in this case, if the image will deleted here, no problem, the project lost a image but my Portuguese project continues with a beautiful and original image. FML IconSP.jpg hi 04:55, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

NielsF, please, if you can, delete Image:Sistema lacrimal.gif because I improve and made a PNG version better, with transparent background. Please, restore this: Image:SLoriginal.png version and put it to list of delete. FML IconSP.jpg hi 05:00, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

Ola, FML, please wait until the original deletion request and the subsequent discussion have died down a bit. I've no interest in stirring up things by deleting and unprotecting at the moment. I'm actually trying to integrate the svg and the png at the moment to present a solution everyone can be happy with. But that won't be for today, it's too late already. Boa noite, NielsF 01:50, 20 August 2006 (UTC)
I see that Erin has already improved the svg. NielsF 21:54, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

Arbitration[edit]

Hey NielsF, Martorell has accepted you as arbitrator. He will be back home soon. Do you have ideas about how to run this? As a first point, I would remind them both that by agreeing to this, they agree to abide by the final decision and recommendations even if they disagree with that viewpoint, and that this is a ruling about the best way to organise the Commons, and says not very much (if anything) about ongoing political disputes. ie, this is not world peace, it's just Commons. pfctdayelise (translate?) 16:56, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

The timeline is maybe a little short, but then they're not writing an essay or anything. There are other users involved besides these 2 principal parties, so I think they should be invited to input something as well. But only if they were involved in the editing then, not just they would like to express an opinion about it. Should other people be bound by it? Yes. Although you've been bold in trying to implement a new structure for the COM:DEL page, I don't like the fact you archived everything, even not yet closed debates. Therefore I've reverted your edits. I agree that the current structure is hard to work with, but your move was a little too bold for my taste. By archiving not yet closed debates, you take them out of sight and that'll probably mean they are never looked at again. Cheers, NielsF 23:28, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

I do not understand this. I cant even load the page (properly) let alone discuss anything. All I did was move debates to the sub pages. The backlog, link clearly indicates further discussion is taking place.
Do as you wish but I'd like to note the "structure" I implimented had taken me several hours. I just like to point out I am less than happy. And current structure is imposible to work with.

request to hold off on Vigeland Sculpture Park image deletions[edit]

 • I am in the process of moving these to the correct wikis.
 • I'd like access to those which have been deleted so that they may be properly transfered.
 • I am investigating a more proper tag than Fair Use, as for this class of image degradation of the image is not necessary since use in cases such as Wikipedias is fully permitted, but due to Commons rules is not permitted (As I understand the debate- restrictions on commercial use in this case).

Dupe replacing on nl.wiki[edit]

Hey, I see you added a translation to my message on nl.wiki; thanks for that. :) I was wondering if you could look into something for me, it looks complicated. Image:Italy.Province.Bolzano - Alto Adige.COA.png is a low-resolution duplicate of Image:Südtirol Wappen.PNG; which is only used in nl:Bozen-Zuid-Tirol. However, the use of it on the Dutch page is in a template that apparently uses images in a standard file name format. As Image:Südtirol Wappen.PNG is very widely used, it seems daft to keep the other one, but it cannot be orphaned because of the NL template. Any suggestions?--Nilfanion 21:37, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

SVG question[edit]

Hello, I've recently seen your work on new svg maps for Uruguayan departments and their capitals. I'd like, if you give me permission to modify your images, to make similar maps for other cities in the country. If you are willing to give me permission, could you also point me to a good (and free) svg editor, since the one I've tried (Inkscape) is not working for me (I can't open nor create working svg files with it), or to some kind of svg plugin for Corel Draw 9? (since that's my main program for drawing). Thanks in advance. Jordevi 01:09, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your tip! Now I'd like to know if you'd be able to make 19 new blank maps, one for each department (not having dots for capital cities), for me or anybody else to place the dots to show the location of the different cities. And also, do you know how can I apply transparency to an image (the dot I'm using), so I don't have that white "frame" all around it? Jordevi 21:47, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
Hi again. I'm in no big hurry for those maps, so I can wait one or two days if you can't make them sooner. As for your questions, well, I don't know whether a blank map for the whole country would be best than several highlighting each department. So, you can do whatever you think will be best. As for the transparency issues I was referring to, I am concerned over that white square that appears around the dot I've placed in the map, which I think makes it more difficult to be seen:
Montevideo
Location

It wouldn't be that noticeable on a lighter background, but it doesn't look that well over the red background it has here. Cheers. (Sorry I know no greetings in Dutch, but I could try in German or Danish next time if that's ok with you :P) Jordevi 02:06, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

Hi, sorry to bother you again, but don't you happen to have any news on this? Met vriendelijke groet Jordevi 04:42, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

Ok, I can wait (I've been quite busy lately, so waiting should not be a problem now :) ). Then I'll have figure out a way to make that dot look good, but I'm sure I'll come up with something (creating a new one with red background, or something like that, maybe). Jordevi 15:59, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

Hi again. Well, I changed my mind, for the time being. I've been checking some other city infoboxes, and I came across this one, used on Swiss cities articles. The fact they could place not just a dot, but the city name as well, over the map is something I like, since it doesn't leave that much dead space. Do you have any idea on how to adapt that system to Uruguayan articles? (I'll do my own research, but it'd be great if you already knew about that) Jordevi 17:38, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

And nevermind once more. I figured it out myself. Thanks for all the help! Jordevi 19:23, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

Deletion request Image:Monsterscore.jpg[edit]

Hi NielsF. I've seen you have reverted the Image:Monsterscore.jpg for improper deletion request, image is used to illustrate a subject on nl:. I don't know if it is used in the nl Wikipedia, but I think a photo with a girl and a scoreboard titled "Monsterscore" is not apropiated and shows no respect to her. MontanNito 23:12, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

Ok. The image is on nl:Monsterscore. I'm not sure whether I would deem it inappropriate, however the main reason for the revert was that you didn't complete the deletion procedure by listing it at COM:DEL. re: Question[edit]

Hey. Nice to see you again. COM:A says: inactive administrators may have their access removed..."Inactive" means no edits in the past 6 months and fewer than 50 edits in the last year. So now you know what you need to do to avoid being desysopped.

What "clean-out" exactly is Siebrand doing? I hope you will work with him to avoid ill-will towards Commons developing. I always worry about this. --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 04:25, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Regarding "strictness" - I believe this is typical in a wiki's natural development. Early on, everything is less strict. Gradually things become stricter. Siebrand may need a few more people on his side if he wants to push the "strictness" faster than its natural growth. Reminding people of our copyright and moral obligations to provide only material known to be truly free, may help.
I really like nl:Wikipedia:Upload, it's a great idea. I personally haven't noticed an increase in problems with Dutch users. Yann or WarX might be able to tell you more than me (I think they do more RC type patrolling). --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 08:39, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Help.[edit]

I have uploaded several SVG files to replace existing raster images on both the Commons and on Wikipedia. Some I uploaded months ago. However, none of them have been rendered as raster images by the MediaWiki engine for use on pages, so whenever a prerendered version of an SVG I uploaded is supposed to appear on a page, only the alt text shows up. I don't know what's going on. For an example of this problem, go to Image:Hyperbola.svg. Jesin 01:16, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

Strange, strange. Problem still not solved I see... try the helpdesk or the Village pump, I'm not that knowledgeable about the quirks of the SVG-rendering software, I'm afraid. NielsF talk/overleg/discussion/discussione 08:17, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

Vertalingen Commons:Upload/nl[edit]

Hey Nielske,
Grz, Ciell 10:25, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

Daar duizelde het me even.

Tuffieten in de Eifel, Duitsland

NielsF ? (en, nl, fr, it) 19:57, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

Afbeeldingen Commons Category[edit]

Hello NielsF,

I have to ask you something that hopefuly you can help about football playgrounds. Namely,

Can you tell me where to find on internet some details and drawings-vertical sections about the preparaion and construction of the football pitches? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.28.183.163 (talk • contribs)

Hi, I'm not sure why you're asking me, as I don't have a clue. Sorry. You maybe better off trying with you local club or national association... or search the FIFA site? NielsF ? (en, nl, fr, it) 11:36, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

Image:15°Stormo-Patch.png[edit]

--F l a n k e r 19:00, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

Hmm. Vado a domandare a qualche altri amministratori. Grazie per la spiegazione. NielsF ? User:NielsF/voetbalvlaggen[edit]

Hey Niels,

Ciell (talk) 08:07, 9 August 2008 (UTC)

Hey Ciell. Inderdaad. Gr, NielsF ? (en, nl, fr, it) 16:13, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
Ciell (talk) 07:38, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

COM:FOP#Belgium[edit]

There is no panorama freedom in Belgium.

Groet, NielsF ? (en, nl, fr, it) 18:09, 31 August 2008 (UTC)

Fair use images[edit]

Well, the thing is that some images of wikimedia (such as project logos, wiki awards and other symbols) show the copyright icon Red copyright.svg and the message: "This file is copyrighted by the Wikimedia Foundation. It includes an official logo or design and (notwithstanding any other statements) has not been licensed under the GFDL. Use of the file is subject to the Wikimedia visual identity guidelines and requires permission.". For that reason I want to ask you how do I get this 'permission' to use some of the images, for example; if I am creating a new wiki award or I want to put interwiki links to my other userpages between wikimedia sister projects using icons. Here are four examples of images with copyright simbols: [6], [7], [8] & [9] ...Hope you can give me a reply soon (in my page here or in my wikipedia user page) --Damërung (talk) 06:53, 30 April 2009 (UTC)

If this is still an issue, please reply below. NielsF ? (en, nl, fr, it) 21:57, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
