Hello, PL Przemek!
Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

why did you add the non-free-logo template to File:Clojure-glyph.svg? If nothing is changed, image will be deleted. --Túrelio (talk) 19:17, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

Sorry, my bad (already fixed it). Permission for use this file at Wikimedia is here --PL Przemek (DISCUSSION) 20:41, 23 July 2010 (UTC)
Fine. --Túrelio (talk) 20:49, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

File:Clojure-glyph.svg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Tux images[edit]

{{Duplicate}} should only be used for exact duplicates. For example: If a file is in a different format it is not identical, and an SVG file is never a duplicate of a raster image. These should be marked with {{vector version available}} instead.--Nilfanion (talk) 10:44, 15 July 2011 (UTC)

In the case of very similar files like these, any deletions should be handled by a normal deletion request not any form of speedy deletion. This is particularly true for raster-to-vector type replacements. To do this tag with {{delete}} and follow the relevant instructions (you should be able to combine these into one request).
However, I do think some should be kept - for example File:Tux.png (as that is the original, not the SVG).
{{duplicate}} could be used for these images, if you can identify those raster images that can be replaced by an identical (same background, same shading...) raster image (instead of pointing to the SVG), as these may be eligible for speedy deletion.--Nilfanion (talk) 08:50, 16 July 2011 (UTC)
And please don't simply insert a duplicate tag again after an admin has already decided this is not a duplicate and removed the previous tag. --Rosenzweig δ 14:09, 26 July 2011 (UTC)

File:POL Gorzów Wielkopolski flag.svg[edit]

I am using Firefox 5 right now. I think a test image should be uploaded before we use it as the main image since I am not sure what other problems people will face. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 20:16, 16 July 2011 (UTC)

PL Przemek -- Most browsers have not been capable of rendering SVG files inline in an HTML page until very new and recent versions, and Wikipedia may not be quick to embrace this solution, since it would lead to inconsistent display between different browsers, and dealing with the various different bugs of different browsers (instead of just the bugs of "rsvg")... AnonMoos (talk) 10:11, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

Before worse browsers won't support SVG, it could be also included to the pages by <img/> or <object> tag, not only inline. Of course a such solution is hopeless way to support SVG. I don't like it when browsers or websites trying to be compatible with each other. Both of them should be only compatible with W3C's recommendations. But when it's about money or number of views (as in case of Wikipedia), ideology taking shit... But ye, you're right, we just have to wait until bugs of SVG renderer would be fixed --PL Przemek DYSKUSJA 05:35, 20 July 2011 (UTC).

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.
