Humongous Meshes[edit]
Hi. Why are the CPU STLs so large? (CPU 20230106 001.stl, CPU 20230106 002.stl, CPU 20230106 003.stl, CPU 20230106 004.stl, CPU 20230106 005.stl, 1.13 GB each) Do they contain the internal structure of the CPU? Like, the individual transistors? Unfortunately Commons seems to time out, when it tries to render them, and I didn't want to download a whole gigabyte just to check.

- @TilmannR: Thank you for your message! Unfortunately, no. They show a CPU similar to the Intel 8086 in different variants. The files are huges, indeed, and unfortunately I realized this too late in the creation process. The feet might be the reason for the size. Processes like smoothing, NURBS converting and other curves increase file sizes of meshes, but sometimes this is needed to display objects smoothly so they don't look edgy. You are right, the previews of STL only work for meshes that are around 150 MiBs or smaller (which is not really much infact). - @PantheraLeo1359531: Interesting. Thanks for the screenshot! "The files are huge, indeed, and unfortunately I realized this too late in the creation process. "I don't have MeshLab installed right now, but apparently there are various options for decimation in the menu
Filters → Remeshing, Simplification and Reconstruction. Would you consider overwriting the meshes with decimated versions? Let's say we consider a regular 400-gon to be a reasonably smooth approximation of a circle. Then a cylinder would have 1600 triangles and a sphere approximately 160k. Since each pin has about two cylinders worth of curvature, you'd expect 40 pins to have about 1600×2×40=128k triangles. And I guess the rest of the mesh needs about 400k triangles for all the spherical surfaces. Therefore decimating the mesh from currently 24M faces to no more than 1M triangles should be fine. Der Wettbewerb ist zweigeteilt, das heißt wir unterscheiden zwischen den beiden Wettbewerbskategorien Landschaft und Detail/Makro. Zu Landschaft zählen auch geschützte Einzelbäume. In der Wettbewerbskategorie Detail/Makro werden Pflanzen, Tiere und Pilze bewertet.
Es sind wie immer viele spannende Motive überall in Deutschland zu finden. Neben Naturdenkmälern wie alten Bäumen oder Naturparks im Gebirge und am Meer können Geotope wie Findlinge, Quellen und Aufschlüsse oder FFH-Gebiete fotografiert werden, um sie unter anderem in der Wikipedia zu dokumentieren. Auch im vergangenen Jahr sind zahlreiche neue Listen und Artikel in diesen Bereichen entstanden, für die wir uns über Fotos freuen – zum Beispiel in Sachsen die Liste der Naturdenkmale in Wurzen.
Als Einstieg für die Suche nach Motiven hilft diese Übersichtsseite. Weitere Informationen erhältst du bei WLE 2023 – Deutschland und unter dieser Anleitung.
Damit der Upload für dich einfacher ist, haben wir in diesem Jahr die einzelnen Hochladeseiten für die Bundesländer abgeschafft, alle Fotos werden über dasselbe Formular hochgeladen. Außerdem haben wir das Layout unserer WLE-Seiten geändert.
Damit es ab 1. Mai mit dem Upload schnell geht:
Außerdem laden wir dich ein, vom 1. Mai bis 30. Juni 2023 an der Vorjury teilzunehmen. Damit bewertest du die hochgeladenen Bilder und ermittelst so gemeinsam mit der Jury, die im Juli tagen wird, die Sieger von Wiki Loves Earth 2023 in Deutschland. Das Vorjurytool ist bald hier freigeschaltet. Du benötigst dafür nur deinen Benutzernamen und das Passwort.

PNG als Weg zu mehr Farbtiefe und Kontrastumfang?[edit]
Ich bin über Deine Antwort bei QI auf Deine Strategie aufmerksam und neugierig geworden. Heißt, Du spielst lieber als PNG aus, weil Du dort mehr als 8bit zur Verfügung hast? - Ja, unter anderem. Also bei Commons können wir neben sRGB bspw. auch Adobe RGB benutzen, aber auch die Farbtiefe frei variieren. RGB8 ist die übliche Farbtiefe mit 16.777.216 Farben. Über PNG können wir auch RGB16 nutzen, mit TIF sogar RGB32. Diese können auch auf Commons hochgeladen werden. TIF-Files mit RGB32 produzieren jedoch keine Vorschauen. JPG arbeitet ausschließlich mit RGB8 und ohne Transparenzkanal. Da das Auge sehr helle und sehr dunkle Bereiche weniger nuanciert wahrnimmt, wird bei JPEG meist diese Helligkeitswerte stärker komprimiert, was die Bearbeitungsmöglichkeiten reduziert. Ich hatte immer mal wieder mit Adobe RGB gearbeitet, jedoch gab es da auf COM:QIC immer wieder Debatten um die "richtige" Farbwiedergabe. Bei anderen Farbräumen weiß ich nicht, inwieweit es um Support für Commons steht, aber meist richtet es sich nach den Möglichkeiten des jeweiligen Dateityps. Erfahrungsgemäß kriegt man auch "unkonventionellere" Dateien auf Commons (sofern sie den korrekten MIME-Typ haben), jedoch ohne Garantie, dass ein Thumbnail gerendet wird, und mehr :). Bei Commons:File types und den weiterführenden Links gibt es womöglich mehr Informationen zu den einzelnen Dateitypen. Beim Phabricator können neue Funktionen und Dateieigenschaften debattiert werden, die besondere Einstellungen haben.
