Hello, Psychoslave!
Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

This media was probably deleted.
Thanks for uploading File:Orcaella heinsohni.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Orcaella heinsohni.jpg) and the above demanded information in your request.

Categories and file names[edit]

Before placing your uploads into categories that are either incorrectly named/spelled or extremely broad (for instance using a country category for an image of a bird in that country), please find out the correct target category first instead of making up new, non-existing categories. Only when a specific category does not exist, a new category should be created. Please read COM:CAT.
Please also give your upload meaningful names, i.e. "Hotel swimming pool Sri Lanka" instead of "Sri Lanka Photo xxx". Please read Commons:File naming.
Please also try to avoid over-categorisation. Please read COM:OVERCAT. - Takeaway (talk) 14:00, 3 October 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thank you. While that was after this uploads, I did read the documentation (and even contributed a little to its French translation). All apologies for my mistakes as a rather rookie contributor on Commons, and thank you for your recommendations. Feel free to give me more advises, and track my uploads as long as you think I may benefit of feedback from your experienced skill. --Psychoslave (talk) 17:23, 3 October 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I have actually done much more than I intended to. Now that you have seen how to, hopefully you yourself can finish recategorising your uploads that are still remaining (still around 100 images left) in Category:Sri Lanka into its subcategories. - Takeaway (talk) 17:38, 3 October 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I promise I'll do. But this may take some time before I find the necessary time to do it. Thank you again for all your help. --Psychoslave (talk) 18:20, 3 October 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I have placed your remaining images into Category:Unsorted photos of Sri Lanka by user Psychoslave for you to sort out when you have time. I want to clean out all the media from Category:Sri Lanka and put them into the correct sub-categories. If a main category is clear of "loose media", it doesn't seem to attract as much lazy categorisation by uploaders than one which has lots of files in them; which, in the end, saves work! ;-) - Takeaway (talk) 19:32, 3 October 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Ok, once again thank you for all your help. --Psychoslave (talk) 23:38, 3 October 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks![edit]

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

Study shows Wiki Love Africa recruitment makes a difference[edit]

Hello Psychoslave

Wiki-Loves-Africa-logo.png

We are writing because you have participated in the Wiki Loves Africa (WLA) photo competition in the past. Results have been published and winning pictures may be seen here !

This year WLA partnered with the research organization CAT Lab (previously CivilServant) to help us evaluate the effectiveness of one of our recruitment efforts. You may or may not have received a message on your user talk page encouraging you to participate again in this year's competition.

We are excited to share with you their study found our recruitment message was a success and may have resulted in as many as 2,000 additional contributed photos. We hope you agree this is great news for Africa and its representation across Wikimedia. You can read more about the study and the results in this blog post.

If you have any questions about the study, we encourage you to ask CAT Lab's research manager Juliakamin(cs).

Notification about possible deletion[edit]

Commons-emblem-issue.svg
Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
