Okay, next time I will nominate because of a clearly false licence claim... The Banner (talk) 18:40, 27 January 2020 (UTC)

In effect, all his four uploads had a wrong licence. As I presume, because the uploader thought that scanning would make it "own work". The Banner (talk) 19:00, 27 January 2020 (UTC)
@The Banner: thank you! I'd say it could be understandable if you DR the paintings as it's not easy to track down their origins and they look suspicious, but a photo of a person in the 1850s, which can be easily verified via google, can hardly be copyrighted. He claimed it as own work. Either let it be, or you could fix it. If such a file is DR-ed, there're only two outcomes--either wait for someone else to fix it, or the useful file gets deleted.--Roy17 (talk) 19:40, 27 January 2020 (UTC)

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

File:Covid-19-curves-graphic-social-v3.gif[edit]

Hi, concerning your review of File:Covid-19-curves-graphic-social-v3.gif [1], may I ask why you think it doesn't violates the copyright policy? The illustration was created by [spinoff]. Even though it is adapted by worked created by others, the theSpinoff has inserted creative elements and nowhere it says that it is freely available for use. Best, Cinadon36 (talk) 22:40, 10 March 2020 (UTC)

@Cinadon36: as I read the webpage, I believe the comic is an original work by the three authors credited (the guy, the lady, and the illustration all seem to be original), so I passed it to signal that the commons copy is the exact replica of the webpage one. (Implication: the CCBYSA mark on the gif is not fake but indeed added by the authors themselves.)--Roy17 (talk) 23:11, 10 March 2020 (UTC)
Hi Roy, the SpinOff's graphic is derived from a work by Twitter user Thomas Splettstößer, which is itself derived from various other incarnations, the earliest being apparently this CDC document from 2007. Neither the CDC nor the Splettstößer graphs were released under a CC licence (although Splettstößer does say "feel free to use and share" in his Tweet). The question seems to be whether the graph itself passes the threshold of originality, such that the Spin Off copy would be an illegal copy of the earlier versions. Or if the graph itself is just a generic concept, and it's only the design thereof that is copyrightable. Cheers Amakuru (talk) 23:18, 10 March 2020 (UTC)
@Amakuru: it goes back to page 18 of https://stacks.cdc.gov/view/cdc/11425 ({{PD-USGov}}).--Roy17 (talk) 23:32, 10 March 2020 (UTC)

This media may be deleted.
Thanks for uploading File:Locomotiva Macuca Blumenau SC (26011111957).jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the OTRS system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Hi! It has come to my attention that you have removed a warning which says that a file doesn't have enough information about the source or license conditions. Nevertheless, it seems to me that this information is still missing and I have restored the tag. You may either add the required information or, if you think that required information is already given, put the image up for a deletion request so that it won't automatically be deleted. Thank you.

--Well-Informed Optimist (talk) 12:07, 15 May 2020 (UTC)

@Well-Informed Optimist: quite the opposite. You are using automated tools to remove a PD tag and insert Remove this line and insert a public domain copyright tag instead special:diff/419293131. There is already a PD tag, which you should be able to see had you not used auto tools and edited blindly.--Roy17 (talk) 12:15, 15 May 2020 (UTC)

Starter guide[edit]

Hi, regarding User talk:DejaVu#Some advice for Persian speakers is a good starter guide, I wrote them from scratch myself based on my experience on Commons. I did not translated them from anywhere. Some other users such as Hanooz and Ahmad252 helped too. I now consider Commons my home project, but I wrote them at fawiki in ordrer to absorb more fa-speaking users from there. In my experience, most users get interested in Wikipedia first and then consider contributing to other projects such as Commons.

You said that you wanted to "adapt them". May I ask for what purpose? I mean for general International users of Commons, or for a specific language community? Google translate does a nice job, but I can rectify the errors of machine translation. 4nn1l2 (talk) 00:22, 21 May 2020 (UTC)

@4nn1l2: I've seen many users having difficulty understanding some basic copyright restrictions, notably FOP. I find your guide pretty illustrative. I might develop an English version or one in another language when I have time and motivation, maybe next year. :) --Roy17 (talk) 11:19, 25 May 2020 (UTC)
