Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Hello, SZC 03!

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

@SZC 03 Hi, this file has some duplicate pages, I've encountered page 95 and 96 this far (respectively duplicates of 93 and 94), you might have better tools than me for finding duplicates and removing them, could you give it a go please? Saumache (talk) 10:55, 13 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Ok, thank you.

I see that pages 60-61 are missing and 63-64 are duplicates. Unfortunately I cannot replace the file if it is greater than 100Mb, so I'd have to remaster it to be under that size. I am quite busy now, so it may take me a couple of days before I have time to do it. In the meanwhile you can either go on transcribing from page 96 since those will remain unaltered.

Also in the second volume there is a missing page. If you find a different scan of that book I can fix that as well. SZC 03 (talk) 11:25, 13 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

From the second volume page 408 is missing, also I thing it would be worthwhile to replace many pages in the interval from 65 to 80. SZC 03 (talk) 15:16, 13 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Page 408 does appear here. Is this usual to encounter missing/misatched pages over time and gradually update the file to deal with it? I wouldn't want to have to go through all the pages manually... @SZC 03 I have some minor issues with indentation, see wikisource:la:Institutiones grammaticae/Liber III where some line won't indent when they should (e.g., at the start, comparativum indents, derivantur doesn't), I can't figure out why or how I should fix this. The indentation is applied to paragraphs (<p> elements) with css. If you inspect the page you will see that the <p> tag was not generated around the text. I do not know why this happens. It seems to be a very unreliable behavior since in the page namespace the <p> tag is generated correctly. SZC 03 (talk) 08:46, 17 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

@SZC 03 Thank you. I have been using <p> at the start of every paragraph to stop the indentation issues I had, there are still some formatting inconsistencies but I might be asking too much of the software. Saumache (talk) 15:47, 17 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
