Hello, Sasata!

Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

The File:Leucopaxillus gentianeus.jpg which you uploaded has been tagged OTRS pending for more than 30 days. This tag indicates that an email setting out permission to use the file was sent to the OTRS team. Unfortunately, we cannot find any record that such an email has been received, and accordingly the file remains without permission. Unless the OTRS team receives evidence that permission has been granted within 15 days of today's date, the file will be deleted. If you have already sent the permission, please re-send it to "permissions-commons@wikimedia.org" now. At the same time, please leave a message at the OTRS noticeboard so that a volunteer can follow this up. Alternatively, you can contact an OTRS volunteer directly. Darvin DeShazer has been very obliging about releasing his photos to Wiki, but in this case, there's a wide selection of ones to use at MO, and I'd prefer to hassle him for his pics of species that I can't find anywhere else. Sasata (talk) 15:59, 24 June 2010 (UTC)

File:Phylloporus alborufus 96436.jpg[edit]

Hi Sasata, do you have any records that File:Phylloporus alborufus 96436.jpg and File:Strobilomyces foveatus 93685.jpg were licensed CC-BY-SA? Now they are licensed CC-..-NC which is not allowed on Commons. --Túrelio (talk) 07:09, 5 May 2011 (UTC)

Apparently not, as Mushroom Observer does not record changes made to licensing. Please see [1] and [2] for additional information about this an similar images. Sasata (talk) 14:02, 6 May 2011 (UTC)
I've moved this to DR, let's discuss this topic there: Commons:Deletion requests/File:Strobilomyces foveatus 93685.jpg. Trycatch (talk) 12:22, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

Hi Sasata, would it be too much to ask if the great cartoon-mushroom mix picture from Tom (on the Mushroom observer) could be added too? Maybe it is not serious enough to be put on the article, but it would also be quite funny in my opinion. Best regards, 84.30.84.225 18:19, 16 June 2011 (UTC)

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

 1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
 2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
 3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

File:Cerrena unicolor - Lindsey 6a.jpg[edit]

Hello Sasata, I am convinced, that the picture shows Trametes versicolor. It is a pretty poor and pale one but T. versicolor is very variable. Cerrena unicolor should be much more velvety. Also the underside (File:Trametes versicolor - Lindsey 6b.jpg) is too bright for C. unicolor. --Toffel (talk) 01:07, 23 March 2014 (UTC)

500+ new fungi images needing ID/categories[edit]

Hi Sasata. I just transferred about 1000 fungi images from Flickr. Half of them have been categorized, but there's still 500+ with no ID. They're mostly high quality shots. If you have time, can you take a look through Category:Files uploaded by INeverCry (Fungi), and see if you can ID some of these? INeverCry 01:31, 15 January 2016 (UTC)

Sure, I'll flick through them as time allows (and I've named some already), but id'ing from photos alone is a largely foolish enterprise ... getting to genus will probably be the end of the id line for many. Sasata (talk) 20:46, 15 January 2016 (UTC)
I really appreciate anything you're able to do. I wasn't happy to see the corny titles in the Flickr set, but the images are pretty high quality, so I figured it was better to transfer them than not. For me, I have to admit that I just like looking at them for the beauty of the fungi, and don't think much on IDs. Face-wink.svg I've posted this at WikiProject Fungi on en.wiki as well, so hopefully a few people from there will look through these too. INeverCry 21:25, 15 January 2016 (UTC)
