Picture of the Year 2013 R2 Announcement[edit]

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open![edit]

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. Click here to learn more and vote »

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

UK tag for Stirling Castle...[edit]

...Hi, just to say that I've noted on the relevant page that File:StirlingCastle1900.jpg, which you uploaded a while back in 2006 I think, needs a valid UK tag, since the photograph was originally taken in the UK. Cheers! Hchc2009 (talk) 09:41, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong and not correct ! See this discussion. Best regards, --DenghiùComm (talk) 19:50, 14 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
hi, nice upload. i'm afraid the LOC image link does not work i.e give an error 500 [1], but there is a correct link here [2] could be an LOC issue, but beyond my ken. Slowking4Farmbrough's revenge 22:23, 5 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! Thanks for informing me. I've corrected the typing error, and the link should work now. -- Greetz Sir Gawain (talk) 08:23, 6 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

File:1803 Josepha.jpg[edit]

Commons-emblem-issue.svg
File:1803 Josepha.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

VG
Watzmann Talk 17:09, 16 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

:-) --XRay talk 12:23, 26 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki Loves Monuments 2014 startet in Kürze[edit]

LUSITANA WLM 2011 d.svg

Hallo Sir Gawain,

Quellenangabe Heinrich v Reuschenberg[edit]

Hallo Sir Gawain,

Hello, Sir Gawain! Prompt loading mechanism high resolution pictures from the site http://altemeister.museum-kassel.de. Thank you very much for your help.

Sir Gawain! Please help if you can. You have not once rescued me. Thank you.

Sorry, Lois976. Currently, I do not have the time to fullfill your request. Sorry for that. -- Greetz Sir Gawain (talk) 17:12, 26 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Do not worry, I'll wait. The main thing that you have helped.
Dear Sir Gawain, well, when finally I wait from you the execution of its request. I beg to assist me and no longer be postponed. With hope and gratitude Lois976.
As I said before: Currently, I do not have the time to fullfill your request. "Currently" means in my case, for the next 2 or 3 months. -- Sir Gawain (talk) 15:28, 2 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Sir Gawain! Tell me, now you already have free time, at least to explain to me how to download images in high resolution? Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 178.120.136.48 (talk) 16:23, 20 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Meanwhile it's quiet easy:

  1. Use Firefox as browser
  2. Open the zoom view of the desired image and copy the URL from the browser's address bar, e.g. http://altemeister.museum-kassel.de/bildbetrachter.php?funktion=zoom&bild1=33794&sf1=&bild2=&sf2=
  3. Go to this address: http://ophir.alwaysdata.net/dezoomify/dezoomify.html
  4. Paste the copied image URL into the address field and click "Send"
  5. Wait until the complete image is shown in high resolution
  6. Right click onto the image and chose "Save image as"

That's all. Good luck. -- Greetz Sir Gawain (talk) 16:45, 20 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Good afternoon. For some reason, this service stopped working. Could you tell me how to download pictures differently? Thank you for your help.

Madame de Grignan ??? Doubtful...[edit]

Hi Sir Gawain,

Are you sure that this is a portrait of Madame de Grignan, the daughter of Madame de Sévigné ? She died in 1705 (during the reign of Louis XIV of France), and her clothes (and hair-dress) are typical of the time of the king Louis XV, the grand-grand-son of L. XIV... Look in the category, other portraits are very different. Thanks for answer ! Best regards from Paris.--Jebulon (talk) 16:53, 14 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jebulon,
The painting was sold as a portrait of Madame de Grignan in 2010. Here you can find another version of the image. The non-contemporary look of her clothes and her hair-dress may be a result of the fact, that this is a posthumous portrait of 1753. Kind Regards -- Sir Gawain (talk) 17:34, 14 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for answer. As for me, it is an obvious mistake. I'll try to know more about. Thanks again.--Jebulon (talk) 19:07, 14 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Der WLM-Countdown hat begonnen[edit]

LUSITANA WLM 2011 d.svg

Hallo Sir Gawain,

Margaret of Austria Van Orley image KMSKA[edit]

Dear Sir Gawain,

I am Sam Donvil from an organisation called 'Packed vzw center for digital heritage'. We are an ngo that supports the Flemish and Brussels heritage and arts sectors with questions and projects related to digital heritage. An important part of our activity consists of convincing museums and archive to publish their digital collections online in a way that people are able to use them, ie. by providing them under a free license on platforms where people are already active such as the Wikimedia platforms (particularly Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata). In order to do this frequently collaborate with the Wikimedia Belgium community.

I am contacting you because we noticed that in 2011 you added [of Austria Van Orley.jpg] to Wikimedia Commons. Am I correct to conclude that you did this because you have a strong personal interest towards the public domain? At Packed we would like to connect more closely with the people in the Wikimedia community that are contributors and editors and find out what their interests are and what motivates them. We are also quite interested to know where you managed to find such a high-resolution image because LUKAS doesn't offer them on their website directly. We also noticed that you added a very interesting exhibition history. Do you always try to include this and where did you find the data?

At Packed we are working with the VKC Vlaamse Kunstcollectie in order to open up the digital collections of several fine and contemporary art museums in Flanders. Check [[3]] for more info on the project. As you will see we initially published datasets on Wikidata. We only recently obtained permission to prepare the LUKAS images for publication to link them to the datasets on Wikidata.

As you may know this year Victor Horta will enter the public domain. We are currently involved in the organisation of the 2018 public domain day in may for which we are convincing a maximum of institutions and individuals to contribute images of Horta exterior and interiors (if possible by organising photo tours) and in March we will put Horta related article creation high on the suggestion list for the [Writing Weeks].

The next Wikipedia writing session/photography drive we are organising is themed around the commune of Forest/Vorst in Brussels. For more info check out the Facebook page of the event.

If you like, feel free to write us a message explaining a bit what your interests are and what kind of activities could interest you: sam@packed.be

With kind regards, Sam

Wiki Loves Monuments 2019[edit]

WLM-Banner-Bg.jpg
Hallo Sir Gawain,

September 2019: it's Wiki Loves Monuments time again![edit]

Hi

You're receiving this message because you've previously contributed to the annual Wiki Loves Monuments contest in the UK. We'd be delighted if you would do so again this year and help record our local built environment for future generations.

You can find more details at the Wiki Loves Monuments UK website. Or, if you have images taken in other countries, you can check the international options. This year's contest runs until 30 September 2019.

Many thanks for your help once more! MichaelMaggs (talk) 15:35, 3 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Important message for file movers[edit]

Commons File mover.svg

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you!
