There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Assessment icon colors?[edit]

I noticed you created the C-class symbol here. Do you think you can change the colors of the C-class symbol and the start-class symbol to match their appropriate colors on the assessment scale? The C-class color is #ffe775 and the start-class color is #ffaa66, for reference. I would change the icons myself, but I'm clueless when it comes to .SVG files.

Thank you, Xnux (talk) 02:53, 21 June 2008 (UTC)

Of course I can change them. I'll do that as soon as possible.
It's not that hard to learn the basics of SVG-editing but using it at an advanced level is a different matter. Sir Iain (talk) 12:50, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
We've changed the colours as the orange-yellow C-Class colour was only temporary. C-Class now uses the yellow B-Class colour (#ffff66), and B-Class now uses a yellow-green colour (#c8fb7b). Would it please be possible to make the changes? --.:Alex:. (talk) 12:20, 23 June 2008 (UTC)
  • Just as a note, the C-class image has already been reverted. -Xnux (talk) 21:46, 23 June 2008 (UTC)
Yes, please change the color for the B-class icon because it is currently the same as the GA-class icon and so the two can be confused with each other quite easily. Gary King (talk) 20:58, 24 June 2008 (UTC)
  • Never mind, the Symbol b class.svg-class icon's been changed too. Xnux (talk) 13:26, 26 June 2008 (UTC) :D
  • Sorry for the delayed response, I wasn't exactly sure what to change and into which colours. It's a nice kind of green now. Sir Iain (talk) 14:55, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

Tip: Categorizing images[edit]

Afrikaans | العربية | беларуская (тарашкевіца)‎ | català | čeština | dansk | Deutsch | Deutsch (Sie-Form)‎ | Ελληνικά | English | Esperanto | español | فارسی | suomi | français | galego | עברית | magyar | íslenska | italiano | 日本語 | ქართული | 한국어 | македонски | മലയാളം | Plattdüütsch | Nederlands | norsk bokmål | polski | português | português do Brasil | română | русский | slovenčina | slovenščina | српски / srpski | svenska | українська | Tiếng Việt | 中文 | 中文(简体)‎ | 中文(繁體)‎ | +/−

Hello, Sir Iain!

Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations"). Pro-tip: The CommonSense tool can help you find the best category for your image.

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Adelbrecht (talk) 21:02, 5 August 2011 (UTC)

File:Locator Electoral Rhenish Circle.svg[edit]

Hallo Sir Iain, shouldn't the Upper Palatinate be included in the Electoral Rhenish Circle around 1550? Greetings --Furfur (talk) 10:59, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

Hello Furfur,
Yes it should. It completely forgot to update all deriative files after updating the English circle map. I will start on that later today. Thanks! Sir Iain (talk) 13:32, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

Proposal to optimize reading maps of Saxon duchies[edit]

Hello! I just saw your work as 2 maps :

  • "Saxony (Division of Leipzig) - NL.png"
  • "Saxony after the Treaty of Naumburg - NL.png"

The first one proposes to read the red areas as Ernestine part of saxony, and the orange one as the Albertine part. But the second map proposes an inversion of colors for the domains from Ernest and Albert ... I propose to affect the red to the Ernest Saxony (like the swords on the Arms from Ernest), and - perhaps no orange... too close of the light yellow of the backside of the map - light green (like the crown on the Arms from Albert). In any case, congratulations for your work!--Jipécé34 (talk) 20:49, 10 October 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the complement. I chose red the represent Electoral Saxony at both times, though that might be a bit confusing. Unfortunatly, I've lost my base map (SVG) and changing the PNG versions now is a lot of work without my base map. I'm planning a new SVG map of Saxony, but that might take a while. Locator map[edit]

Dear Sir Iain, I noticed that you have created and uploaded many high quality locator maps here. The category Category:Locator maps of territories of the Holy Roman Empire (1618) contains the File:Locator Bohemia within the Holy Roman Emire (1618).svg, so I wanted to ask if you could take some time to make a similar maps for the other territories of "Lands of the Bohemian Crown": "Moravia", "Silesia" and a map for the Crown Lands combined. Thanks for your great maps and thanks again if you decide to add those I mentioned. Have a nice day! Der Golem (talk) 06:20, 21 October 2015 (UTC)

Of course! I probably already have these ready mad, just didn't upload them. Thank you for your kind words! Sir Iain (talk) 10:51, 21 October 2015 (UTC)
They've been uploaded and added to the Locator map category. Silesia remains a homogeneous block, as it turns out my source wasn't entirely correct. I'll do some research and will try to add all different duchies there. That means correcting all maps...again. Sir Iain (talk) 12:30, 21 October 2015 (UTC)
Ooh thank you very much for the uploads! Your work on these quality maps is very appreciated! :D --Der Golem (talk) 04:28, 22 October 2015 (UTC)

Typo in your HRE Map (German)[edit]

Hello, Sir Iain,

Your German language map of the Holy Roman Empire (1618) (Map of the Holy Roman Empire (1618) - DE.svg) seems to contain a typo. The Netherlands are called Vereinigte Niederlandeden, unless my vector renderer does something completely wrong. It should be "Vereinigte Niederlande". Please see: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republik_der_Sieben_Vereinigten_Provinzen

At the sources section of the description you wrote "Braunsweich-Lüneburg" instead of "Braunschweig-Lüneburg". Perhaps that error was copied from the original source. The error is not present on the map.

In addition, I would like to point out that the old German names of Nancy and Besançon are Nanzig and Bisanz. I have no idea whether it is appropriate to use them on this map; as you used a German language source to create the map I'd suggest to keep the names as they were used there.

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this stuff. And thank you very much for your efforts and contributions. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Equality 7-2522 (talk • contribs) 15:39, 07 November 2015 (UTC)

It's not, thanks for noticing these errors. The original map used Nancy and Besançon, probably because there weren't substantial numbers of Germans living in these cities, unlike the cities in Poland and Hungary. I'll correct these errors. Sir Iain (talk) 15:56, 7 November 2015 (UTC)

Map of the Holy Roman Empire (1618) - DE.svg[edit]

Hello Sir Iain,
thank you very much for creating and uploading this high quality map. Your work is really very much appreciated. I especially liked it that you paid so much attention to the details and did not simply approximate the border lines.

I have two questions:
1. I find some color shadings difficult to distinguish: e.g., I have difficulties to distinguish the ducal parts (herzoglicher Anteil) and the royal parts (königlicher Anteil) and those parts that were condominions in Schleswig-Holstein. In fact, I only realized that you created a striped pattern for the latter when I edited the file and had a closer look at it. I would find it helpful if there would be a stronger color difference.
2. Similar for the Habsburg possessions: I have difficulties to distinguish the Austrian line from the Spanish line. When I enlage the image I notice the difference at the border line (Sundgau – Freigrafschaft Burgund/Franche Comté) but not at first sight in low magnification (thumbnail), which would be helpful because these are large territories (similar to the Wittelsbach or Hohenzollern possessions).
3. I personally find the colors of the surrounding countries (Poland, Ottoman Empire, France) relatively dark and strong (as an example I tried out a version with 50% or even 25% transparency and would have preferred these colors). But this is of course a matter of taste.

Greetings

--Furfur Diskussion 08:46, 26 August 2016 (UTC)

Hallo Furfur,
Thank for your kind words and constructive criticism! I agree that it can be hard to distinguish some colours. Some monitors make this even worse. Colouring is a difficult task, especially in the HRE, because of the many enclaves and exclaves. A few basic rules (such as colouring all ecclesiastical territories purple) can make it very difficult.
I'll try your suggestion when I next update this map, as I wanted to increase readability by removing borders where they interfere with text placement. (See File:Map of Anhalt (1259).svg for an example).
Greetings, Sir Iain (talk) 17:01, 4 September 2016 (UTC)
Hallo Sir Iain,
Thank you for you reply. If you still intend to modify and improve the map, I have some minor suggestions:
1. in the bishopric of Augsburg the name "Augsburg" is underlined – I assume that this is not intended?
2. in the Duchy of Bar, the name Bar-le-Duc lacks one hyphen,
3. the town Lomsha in Poland is mostly spelled 'Lomscha' in German,
4. in East Prussia I would suggest to move Tilsit a little bit North, such that it borders the river Memel,
5. Neu-Brandenburg in Mecklenburg is usually (at least nowadays) written as one word 'Neubrandenburg',
6. in Österreich ob der Enns (Oberösterreich) the town name should be 'Steyr' (at least in modern spelling).
Thank you again for providing this extraordinary map! I hope that you can preserve your interest in the HRR ...
Greetings --Furfur Diskussion 22:09, 4 September 2016 (UTC)
