Your image upload on File:Coat of arms Ivory Coast ca 1964-2000.svg[edit]

That may be something else, but I don't think it's the Coat of Arms of the Ivory Coast from 1964 to 2000. If it is something else, it needs to be reuploaded with a different filename suitable to what it is... AnonMoos (talk) 17:35, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

Hello,
No, the Ivorian presidency website [1] is very clear on this : The government now uses the 1964 Coat of Arms, restored shortly after Alassane Ouattara seized power in 2011. Moreover, youth and sports minister Alain Lobognon, in one or more videos, did make it clear that the current Coat of Arms is the one first adopted in 1964, and restored in 2011. It was also underlined again in one video that the SVG taken from Wikipedia, apparently very widespread, has the mistake of not having the motto REPUBLIQUE DE CÔTE D'IVOIRE written in silver.
Actually, these precisions were made because, in Ivory coast, made people got mixed up between the various versions found online of these Coat of Arms. With these information, I have updated the francophone page about the Ivorian coat of arms [2]. And I also wished to fix the remaining error in this SVG file. --Skiper (talk) 18:02, 6 December 2013 (UTC)
Unfortunately, the pre-2011 sources (FOTW, book ISBN 0-688-01141-1) don't show white lettering. It seems this is the 2011 interpretation of the 1964 coat of arms, so upload it with a file name such as File:Coat of arms Ivory Coast 2011.svg or similar... AnonMoos (talk) 18:57, 6 December 2013 (UTC)
I fail to find any clearer description of the CA anywhere on the web. Yet, the various news articles and the precidency website do say that the 1964 decree, modifying the 1960 decree, has not been modified. It seems very uneventful that the heraldry would have been modified without the publication of a new decree modifying those of 1964 again. So I would say that many sources give a less detailed description of the CA, omiting the detail about the motto.
I have found another source actually adding some kind of confusion in this [3]. It states for the 1964 CA that the motto is indeed in silver... but that the elephant is gold defended silver. I have not idea where that person got this description, yet in this yet another press release of the minister, he states that those are the 1964 CA, and that both the elephant and the motto are silver. He also states "the Coat of Arms did not change since 1964". Read this here [4].
So I highly suspect that descriptions made available in several places wheren't detailed enough compared to the written 1964 decree, that seems to be more precise but was never uploaded on the Internet before 2011. Actually, a huge quantity of websites display either wrong versions or edited versions of the ivorian CA, so it is quite a mess to sort out which ones are the right ones corresponding to the four descriptions of the CA. --Skiper (talk) 20:26, 6 December 2013 (UTC)
Whitney Smith is highly-respected in the English-speaking world, so if there's confusion, I would prefer to go with his testimony on what the 1964 arms were. Of course, the current coat of arms is whatever the current government of the Ivory Coast says they are. I again urge uploading the revised version under a different filename... 06:12, 7 December 2013 (UTC)
I would prefer to go to the 1964 official decree officially reinstored by decree in 2011 that, above any kind of sources, is the legal description of the Coat of Arms. This is why I am looking forward to ask by email for the publication of each decree related to the Coat of Arms and symbols of Cote d'Ivoire, from 1959-1960 to today. There seems to be no other way to deal with this.--Skiper (talk) 07:45, 7 December 2013 (UTC)
There appear to be several implementations or interpretations of the 1964 decree, and in that case, I would prefer to go with what is in usually-reliable sources accessible to me. You can upload a different version, and the individual language encyclopedias can decide which to use (or use one for 1964, the other for 2011). AnonMoos (talk) 11:54, 7 December 2013 (UTC)
Hello, I just phoned directly to the Youth ministry in charge of the promotion of the national symbols. Their position is clear : the 1964 decree has never been modified since then. However, not taking this fact in account, several deviations of the official coat of arms have been made. But there was never a legal modification of the 1964 decree, modifying the description of the coat of arms.

I have asked the person I had on the phone to send me a scan of the official 1964 decree, as well as a short explanation with an indication the paper is an official one from the institution. I am currently waiting for it. --Skiper (talk) 15:12, 5 February 2014 (UTC)

Hi @Yann:,
Oh yes, I did forget to do that (not used to do that many speedy deletions). What gadget actually helps in doing this BTW? I used to do it manually. Thanks! Face-smile.svg
