Bridge at Shannonbridge[edit]

Hi there, it looks like NIAH has two numbers for the same bridge: Shannonbridge - Reg. No. 31956004 and Shannon Bridge - Reg. No. 14805011. Our category is Category:Bridge at Shannonbridge as it's also the name of the village nearby. What to do with Wikidata - merge them? It is the same bridge from what I can see. -- Deadstar (msg) 11:30, 1 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I think they are duplicated as they have been listed as part of two county surveys (Roscommon and Offaly). The counties were surveyed separately over a period of years, so this happens a few times from what I have seen. I'd merge them, and keep both counties are associated localities. Smirkybec (talk) 11:48, 1 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Merged to wikidata:Q55029295. Thanks. -- Deadstar (msg) 11:41, 3 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Adding a subcategory to history museums[edit]

Dear Smirkybec,

I hope this message finds you well and in good spirit.

I watched your Wikipedia tutorials on Youtube. They are quite impressive and extremely helpful, I must say. I would like to add a new subcategory to history museums in the Republic of Ireland on Wikimedia Commons. Unfortunately, I am struggling a bit with that. Smirkybec, would you mind helping me out on this?

I look forward to hear from you. Sincerely, Wiilkenson (talk) 13:18, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Wiilkenson thank you very much, you're very kind. What category were you looking to create? I'm happy to oblige if I can. It can be a bit finicky. Smirkybec (talk) 13:28, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Smirkybec, thanks a lot for your quick response and kind support! I am delighted to hear that and really appreciate your help. With regard to categories, I would like to add the Little Museum of Dublin to the category “History museums in the Republic of Ireland”. There are already a few museums listed (as subcategories).
The path goes as follows: Wikimedia Commons Content // History // History museums // History museums by country // History museums in the Republic of Ireland // Subcategory (the one I would like to add regarding the museum). Wiilkenson (talk) 15:07, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Wiilkenson I would be tempted to create the category here: Category:Museums in Dublin but we can certainly have it in the Category:History museums in the Republic of Ireland as well, what do you think? The history museum category doesn't seem to be as well populated, oddly enough! Smirkybec (talk) 15:40, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Smirkybec. This is an excellent proposal - many thanks! As you've proposed, it would be great if we could add the Little Museum of Dublin to here: Category:Museums in Dublin.
Feel free to let me how we could continue, Smirkybec. Sincerely, Wiilkenson (talk) 16:21, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Wiilkenson see what you think! Category:The Little Museum of Dublin Smirkybec (talk) 17:22, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Splendid - thank you so much for your support, Smirkybec. Your effort was of great help to me. Sincerely, Wiilkenson (talk) 10:01, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
No problem :) Smirkybec (talk) 11:17, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki Loves Earth 2021[edit]

Hi and sorry for the intrusion, how do I go about entering a photo - I uploaded File:Lough Ennell Ladestown shore 3 June 2021.jpg that I took today, is that all I have to do?. Thanks for any assistance you can offer Joseywales1961 (talk) 17:22, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Joseywales1961 to be included in the right category, you need to upload any images using the upload links in there tables here like this one for Leinster. For this one, I can manually add it no problem. You'll see it will have some extra categories and a template saying it was uploaded as part of Wiki Loves Earth 2021. Thanks for taking part and good luck! Smirkybec (talk) 17:33, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for that, I must be going blind not to see that! (thats what turning 60 does to you) I think I should be able to upload any I take in future Joseywales1961 (talk) 17:38, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Brilliant! I look forward to seeing more images! Don't hesitate to get in touch though, I'm always on hand :) Smirkybec (talk) 17:40, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Fixing unidentified locations in Dublin[edit]

You have been doing a great job identifying several Dublin photos I uploaded about 18 months ago. As I have not lived in Dublin for almost 30 years and don't drive around a lot when I do visit, I could not identify many of them. So thanks. However, you might also want to rename them at the same time because the "Dublin and flickr number" are uninformative titles, which I have been doing as I find them. Cheers and enjoy the open pubs and restaurants. Ww2censor (talk) 09:21, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

FYI, when doing a "move and rename", if the image is unused, first click on the edit menu and you can deselect the redirect option, as there is no point in having such a redirect but you can't do that if you first select "move and rename." Ww2censor (talk) 09:48, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Ww2censor: of course! I'm always a bit hesitant with renaming as I'm not entirely sure about the etiquette, but I'm happy to comb back through my contributions this evening and rename what I have done so far. (And thanks for the redirect tip.) I enlisted the help of some Open Street Mappers and others with some of them, and I've been filtering that information in. I'm good on the Northside but not so much on the Southside! I'm still going to be playing it safe and not going to any pubs, so this will keep me busy of an evening! Smirkybec (talk) 09:56, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I too did not do any renaming for a long time but am now pretty comfortable with it. I can do the ones you identify as I have all the outstanding "Unidentified locations in Dublin" that I uploaded on 20 December 2019 on my watchlist for now, so any named like that will appear for me. Now there are only about 50 left and I suppose some will never be done. I did my best and also used some maps to add identities. I used to travel around a lot but those days are gone. Ww2censor (talk) 10:26, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Think we bumped into each other updating those names - I hope I made a good fist of it! I might be able to use some of the coordinates from OSM as well to some of them. I'm going to create a category for those Heuston South Quarter later today as well. I'll have a few more to describe today. I also managed to get one or two streets that were just labelled as "Dublin" identified, including this one, which I was very impressed by! Smirkybec (talk) 10:40, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki Science Competition 2021 has started[edit]

Logo for Wiki Science Competition

Dear uploader of European Science Photo Competition 2015 and Wiki Science Competition 2017 and Wiki Science Competition 2019, we would like to remind you that Wiki Science Competition 2021 has started in the whole world. It is now completed in Russia (active in May), but it's still open in almost all the other countries.

If you want to take part in WSC2021, please consult this page. Only some national categories are associated to competitions with local prizes.

If you are an expert user, we remind you that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in their national category even if not uploaded with the main interface.

Please keep in mind that there is a new category this year, that is "astronomy".

If you already took part in a country that has completed its upload phase, please consider improving the description in English of your files (click on the edit button), since such description is what the international jury will use to evaluate them. World finalists will be finalized after March 2020.

Sorry for bothering you and have a nice wiki.
