categories and {categorise}[edit]

categories and {categorise}[edit]

Hi, thank you for helping to categorize and thank you for using meaningful categories and respecting {categorise}, i.e. avoid to use 'main caregories respectively avoid 'over-categorizing'

  1. p.e. Category:Temples in Kannur district instead of Category:Kerala
  2. p.e. Category:Buddha statues in Bihar instead of Category:Bihar + Category:Buddha statues from India
  3. p.e. Category:Statues in Bangalore instead of Category:Bangalore

etc.

Thx and regards, Roland zh 18:31, 18 July 2013 (UTC)

Thanks! I'm trying to do it right, although the category system is confusinging and I can't find a good description of it anywhere. Soranoch (talk) 22:56, 18 July 2013 (UTC)

categories and {categorise} and 're-categorization'[edit]

Hi, as pointed before (and corrected imho many edits without comment), please by very carefull in categorization in general, and in addition, miss-leading re-categorization of 'established' categories, p.e.

etc.etc.etc. btw: it's a lot of work to correct miss-categorizations of that kind, also please take care!! Regards, Roland zh 20:56, 30 July 2013 (UTC)

I'm very sorry. I made some mistakes and was trying to correct them when I had to leave. Sorry I didn't get a chance to correct my own mistakes! Best wishes, Soranoch (talk) 11:41, 31 July 2013 (UTC)
...i see and would like to believe ... but as pointed before, imho there's no need for further re-categorizations as of August 1/2, 2013, related to Karnataka and Kerala and Agriculture in India without any discussions before, Roland zh 18:35, 2 August 2013 (UTC)
Alright. Sorry! Soranoch (talk) 18:43, 2 August 2013 (UTC)

File:Manora renamed.JPG[edit]

Hello!

Thank you for uploading File:Manora renamed.JPG to the Wikimedia Commons. I noticed that when you uploaded from another Wikimedia project, you left out some important information, or copied it incorrectly. In the future, please consider using CommonsHelper, a tool which automates the process of moving files over. Thank you,

Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:55, 30 August 2013 (UTC)

Can you at least acknowledge my statement, instead of creating more work for the rest of us by mistransfering more content? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 23:19, 30 August 2013 (UTC)
I'm sorry. I didn't see the message. I didn't get a message notice and was unaware that I was doing something wrong. How was I mistransfering? Should I stop transferring? I'm unclear what I'm doing wrong. I always use the "Commons Helper tool". Is there something else I should be doing? Sorry. Could you be more specific? I don't understand what you're saying. Soranoch (talk) 00:05, 31 August 2013 (UTC)
It doesn't look like you used the CommonsHelper tool. It looks like you used the standard Commons upload tool, which isn't as specific. The problem is that you were placing the wrong licenses on images (e.g., Creative Commons tags on public domain uploads) and you weren't properly linking the author's username. If you use the tool which I linked above, it handles the linking, the upload date, the license, the upload history, etc. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:02, 31 August 2013 (UTC)
I always use the tool you linked to above and not any other, including the the standard commons tool. The CommonsHelper tool has a forced-choice for licences when it's not one's own work and it's not clear what to do when none of the choices mentions Public Domain and the original uploader has not chosen a licence. I'm sorry I've offended you so deeply.
I'm fine with not uploading any more. I thought I was helping and clearly I wasn't. I'm happy enough to step aside and refrain from continuing the very unrewarding task of moving files to the Commons. Soranoch (talk) 01:15, 31 August 2013 (UTC)
I'm not sure what you're doing with the tool, but the wikitext that accompanies the images you've uploaded clearly is not being generated by it. The tool can automatically upload for you if you sign up for TUSC (follow the instructions at the link), or you can generate the wikitext and click a link to upload it yourself, with the text already filled out.
I am not offended, nor do I want you to stop uploading; however, you will make things much easier on all of us if you use the upload tool. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:32, 31 August 2013 (UTC)

File:Rosa Bonheur Calves 1879.jpg[edit]

Why you removed the Category:1879 paintings? --Botaurus (talk) 09:05, 31 August 2013 (UTC)

Because I've been instructed several times to use only the more specific category, and to strenuously avoid overlapping categories like Category:1879 paintings and Category:1870s paintings from France. And to refrain from using categories where one is wholely a subset of another. I've been told to only use the most specific.
Also, I'm told to avoid overly broad categories so the person looking through a category doesn't have to search through hundreds of photos in a single very general category. In this case, the category Category:1879 paintings seems misleading; it only covers a small range of the thousands and thousands of paintings from that year and seems to concentrate only on European (Western) painting and ignores the rest of the world. But even for 1879, it leans toward one restricted style of painting. It by no means represents "1879 paintings" worldwide in a range of styles.
Sorry if I was wrong from your point of view. It's hard to follow conflicting advice. I've been told to try to minimize categories to prevent category overload and misrepresentative category names. I apologize for offending you. Soranoch (talk) 12:53, 31 August 2013 (UTC)
Me are such categories no matter. I just wondered because I did not think the category is wrong. If these are your instructions, that's ok. Greetings --Botaurus (talk) 13:23, 31 August 2013 (UTC)

Category:Hunza_Valley[edit]

Rupert Pupkin (talk) 15:17, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

OK, I don't mind. We can keep the Cat Hunza Valley, but then we don't need the Category Hunza. One of them is superfluous. (And Hunza Valley had less entries than Hunza so I chose that one for deletion) What do you say? --Rupert Pupkin (talk) 15:53, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

I prefer Hunza Valley for the reasons given on the nomination page. Hunza is too general, I think, and the files in it fall into different categories, such as food, rivers etc. As the disambiguation page on enwiki shows, en:Hunza is vague on that wiki as there are entities such as rivers, people, former states, mountain peaks named "Hunza". Soranoch (talk) 16:23, 2 November 2013 (UTC)
Agree, Hunza can go. Are there disambig cats on the Commons? Soranoch (talk) 17:46, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

Sorry, couldn't answer last weekend. In the meantime i prefer Hunza valley to... See my comment here. As far as I know, there are no disambig cats. Best regards. --Rupert Pupkin (talk) 12:10, 4 November 2013 (UTC)
