Thank you

Thank you for the speedy watching of File:Cowboys Stadium configured for basketball - cropped.jpg. This turned out to be a technical fubar by an upload script, but it's good to know no-license-images are not only tagged and bagged but fixed up very quickly around here. 00:46, 11 January 2010 (UTC)

File:Selenicereus grandiflorus.jpg

You have rotated this file, which is incorrect. The position of the original upload was correct. Please undo this. Ulf Eliasson (talk) 12:22, 26 January 2010 (UTC)

Thank you, actually opening a category in commons was a little bit mroe traumathic than I thought, so a couple of mistakes could come eventuallywith it. Thanks :) --Farkasven (talk) 14:20, 28 January 2010 (UTC)

Re [1] I didn't see a template to ask that extraneous elements be cropped so I just used {{crop}}. Can you crop it so that just the subject and the reporters standing quite near to her are visible? As it stands, she is barely visible when the image is in thumbnail form in the infobox at w:Kreesha Turner. –xenotalk 16:15, 30 January 2010 (UTC)

That's excellent - thank you. –xenotalk 22:18, 30 January 2010 (UTC)

Flickr reviewing

Hello Techman224, and thank you for your application to be a flickr reviewer. The application has been removed as successful, and you've been added to the list of reviewers. Congratulations! Please see Commons:Flickr images if you haven't done so already, and the backlogs at Category:Flickr images needing human review and Category:Flickr review needed. A helpful script for easy-tagging flickr images is at importScript('User:Patstuart/Flickrreview.js'); (which you can add to your monobook.js), and you can add {{user reviewer}} or {{user trusted}} to your user page if you wish. Thank you for your work on Commons! :) –Juliancolton | Talk 13:21, 5 February 2010 (UTC)

Fixing broken redirects isn't difficult

I've declined two speedy deletion requests.[2][3] In both instances, it was rather easy to find the correct category that the page should redirect to. (there was a third page, "Pedro de Moya", which you tagged for deletion; I only deleted it because of the quotes used in the article name, otherwise I would have just redirected it to Category:Pedro de Moya)

Please keep that in mind the next time you tag a broken redirect for deletion. EVula // talk // // 23:47, 5 February 2010 (UTC)

How I can verify if the image is a copyright violation? Is it just a reasonable suspicion or are there concrete evidence? --Supernino (talk) 21:22, 18 August 2010 (UTC)

Question regarding copyright viol;ation Flickr-sourced picture Sovereign Harbour

Hi Techman224. When I used the Flickr sourced pucture of Sovereign-Harbor-locks and lifeboat.jpg I tried to look for the original license used but when using my Epiphany webbrowser (Knoppix laptop) I didn't see the copyright info. I'm used to work with a special Flickr-app on my PDA and a special Flickr! Windows application that automatically gives all the required details when downloading a Flickr! picture, but I couldn't find the info via the nromal Flickr! website. Where can I find that these pics weren't free to re-distribute? Some info about what to look for when using the standard Flickr! website would be welcome to prevent me making the same error in the future.Tonkie (talk) 01:52, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

Commons-emblem-issue.svg File:Coat_of_arms_of_Antigua_and_Barbuda.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue.
Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

An offering for our new administrator from your comrades...

Techman224, congratulations! You now have administrator rights on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard an it subpages), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care. Have a look at the list of Gadgets (on the bottom there are the ones specifically for admins – however, for example the UserMessages are very helpful too).

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons webchat on There is also a channel for Commons admins, which may be useful for more sensitive topics, or coordination among administrators: #wikimedia-commons-admin webchat.

You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading. You can find the admin backlog overview at COM:AB.

Please also check or add your entry to the List of administrators and the related lists by language and date it references.

Hi Techman224, congrats on your successful RfA. I have also added the OTRS flag as per the separate request. Cheers, russavia (talk) 20:24, 25 February 2012 (UTC)

Republican primary map

Looking at Talk:Republican Party presidential primaries, 2012 (Wikipedia) I see no consensus reached for the change that occured with the colors with the color-blind person in question even requesting there be "No Purple or green" With this in mind would you mind reverting until a consensus can be reached?

Looks like he reverted himself. Techman224Talk 04:25, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

Need help

I recently uploaded an image from [5] the website says the image is in the public domain but under what license? The image I uploaded is here: Akane Kanji.png - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 21:44, 30 March 2012 (UTC)

I think I have provided teh correct license based on the info but I could use an opinion sorry for this im kinda new at uploading images. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 22:22, 30 March 2012 (UTC)
I don't know, there's one site that says it's public domain, but another that says cc-by-sa-3.0. You might get a better response on the Village pump/Copyright. Techman224Talk 20:19, 1 April 2012 (UTC)
Okay I will bring it up there thanks =) - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 16:35, 2 April 2012 (UTC)

If/when you have a minute

Could you take a look at this filter. Having found a few IPs placing spammy links recently I thought it would be good to get an idea about the scale of the problem however currently the filter is firing when an IP puts a cat on a file (I think) which is obviously wrong). Any assistance will be appreciated - TIA --Herby talk thyme 10:32, 15 May 2012 (UTC)

I've examined the log entries, and for all of them where the category changes the filter doesn't return a match which it should do, for the one by and others where a link is changed or added it returns positive as it should. I don't know what the abuse filter was doing those days, but when manually examining the edits and loading the filter as it is now, it returns false. I would enable it again to see if it gives false positives. I think it's a glitch of some kind. Techman224Talk 23:42, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
OK - running again and thanks for the help. --Herby talk thyme 12:57, 18 May 2012 (UTC)

AJAX patrol

Hello, I see that you use AjaxPatrolLinks. I have good news for you: AJAX patrolling is now in core! On Wikimedia projects, it should arrive with MediaWiki 1.21wmf5, between 2012-11-26 and 2012-12-5. You should disable this gadget when the new feature change is enabled, because it will become redundant and to avoid double patrolling. Thanks, Nemo 08:03, 21 November 2012 (UTC)

Actually, I didn't touch those comas, they weren't there to begin with, and was only working because was the last one on the list. I did however forgot to check that. Thanks for the warning. Béria Lima msg 12:56, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi Techman224, as you just reverted Salvio giuliano's request on COM:AN, do you think it's bogus? --Túrelio (talk) 23:39, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

Filter merge

Mind telling me why - in practice they "catch" quite different behaviour - cheers --Herby talk thyme 08:40, 5 January 2013 (UTC)

They're both exactly the same, except for the namespace. Merging them together is better because we can manage the links all in one place, instead of copying them to the other filter. It's more efficient and less error-prone. Techman224Talk 19:17, 5 January 2013 (UTC)
OK - they were different at one stage and the intention was to tweak them. I'll split them again when I get around to reviewing the differences - so few people even look at the log never mind do anything. Don't bother with talkback btw. --Herby talk thyme 08:52, 6 January 2013 (UTC)

However - while I've got you :) - it is picking up folk with noticeably more than "user_editcount <= 30" currently?? --Herby talk thyme 08:54, 6 January 2013 (UTC)

I've put all the statements in brackets, and it seems to work. The Abuse Filter can definitely act weird if you don't define your conditions right. Techman224Talk 20:33, 6 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi - thanks for doing these changes. Could I be a pain and ask you to change "licenced" back to "licensed" in the fourth word of this message. Due to the vagaries of British English spelling, license is correct as a verb, but the noun is "licence". Thanks.  An optimist on the run! 17:23, 18 January 2013 (UTC)

What did you do with the categories that were on this photo and all of the other information??? --Mjrmtg (talk) 23:56, 9 February 2013 (UTC)

I didn't do anything to the categories. Something went wrong with the moves, it's cutting out information. Looks like the file were moved, and then that redirect got moved to the same name. I can't find the original text. It's not just this file, I'm finding this in a bunch of files. Techman224Talk 00:02, 10 February 2013 (UTC)

Filter 69

This filter makes the assumption that the users in the local permissions group is the only OTRS members. That assumption is plainly wrong. That said it is not uncommon with erroneous clams made by faulty filters. The whole concept of an "abuse filter" used in this kind of context is wrong. There are no abuse when people are handling emails on language specific queues. Actually there are very seldom abuse involved at all in filters set up as "abuse filters". Jeblad (talk) 04:02, 4 July 2013 (UTC)

I don't know what exact situation you're talking about, but everyone in the OTRS group is supposed to have access to the permissions queues, and they should be the ones tagging files with the {{PermissionOTRS}} template. Having others tag it would not be acceptable as they don't have access to tickets. Techman224Talk 04:08, 4 July 2013 (UTC)
I have access to OTRS and handle the Norwegian queue. Commons permission queue is only one of a looong list of queues. Its a brilliant example of people on Commons failing to realize they are part of a bigger community. But no problem, we (more or less I) can stop handling permissions. Jeblad (talk) 04:15, 4 July 2013 (UTC)
The info and permissions queues are totally different. All permissions should be sent to Info queues should not be handling permissions. Techman224Talk 04:42, 4 July 2013 (UTC)

Your protections of Wikipedia logo files

Hi, can you please explain to me your decision to protect those 21 Wikipedia logo files? As you might have noticed, they have already been protected by myself against re-uploads and moves; there's no point in protecting a file description page from editing by all users except administrators — if anyone decides to vandalise a file description page, it will not hurt us more than if they decided to destroy any other page on Commons.

You only barred all users from editing those pages, which means they will have to request edits from admins with {{editprotected}}, and it just adds up to our backlog. I suggest that you revert your protections to the level I set. Thanks, odder (talk) 08:20, 2 January 2014 (UTC)

They are fully protected either way as I added them to Commons:Auto-protected files/global/logos. I just updated the list, and fully protected them from editing so that it is obvious. A lot of them have a template message on the file page saying that the page is protected, directing them to the talk page. The template doesn't cover cascade protection, that's why I explicitly protected them so it catches it. Techman224Talk 08:30, 2 January 2014 (UTC)
Yes, I noticed, and I disagree with that, too. As I said, I think there is no point in protecting the file description pages, because it doesn't protect us from anything, and only bars regular editors from making whatever edits they'd like to make, and forces them to use {{editprotected}}. This is a very unwiki way of doing things. PS You don't need to alert me about your replies with a template; just use Echo notifications. odder (talk) 08:45, 2 January 2014 (UTC)

Hi, I noticed you have set up User:MiszaBot to archive your talk page. Unfortunately, the bot has stopped working, and given how its operator is inactive, it is unclear when/if this will fixed. For the time being, I have volunteered to operate a MiszaBot clone (running the exact same code). With that said, your input would be appreciated at Commons:Bots/Requests/ArchiveBot 1. Regarding editing File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-or.svg

Hi, There were few alignment problems in the logo which I had corrected and need your help to upload it. Moreover, as English Wikipedia has "The Online Encyclopedia" as its quote, a similar quote is going to be made for Odia as well. The community is discussing about it and might take more time to decide. In the mean time please give me permission to upload the modified file for the current one. Thanks. --Subhashish Panigrahi (talk) 12:16, 23 May 2014 (UTC)

@Psubhashish:: I assume you mean this file. Since this file is defined in InitialiseSettings.php directly, it will immediately change the logo for the site. You have to wait until the community discussion closes until you can upload it at that location. Techman224Talk 18:17, 23 May 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for clarifying. Will do so. Cheers! --Subhashish Panigrahi (talk) 11:54, 24 May 2014 (UTC)
