Tip: Categorizing images[edit]

Hello, Tyw7!

Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations"). Pro-tip: The CommonSense tool can help you find the best category for your image.

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

FP nominations[edit]

I notice that you are nominating a number of images for FP. I suggest that you let them play out before nominating more, just to get a taste of the kind of things that reviewers are looking for in a FP. --99of9 (talk) 04:11, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

Don't let your first attempt at FP get you down, they have a very high standard indeed. To get an idea of how good the flowers and birds must be, take a look: birds flowers. Best wishes as you seek to rise to the challenge! --99of9 (talk) 09:16, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

QI nominations[edit]

Retouching pictures that don't have a good quality in the first place is not the solution, especially when it about focus and depth of field. I would suggest you buy a camera on which you can decide such settings... Many point-and-shoot and all more-expensive DSLR's will let you do that. I'm afraid your cell phone pictures won't make the cut very often. You have good ideas and many good subjects but QI is in the first place about quality and there are basic things that need to be right before an image is called QI. Amongst those are depth of field, exposition, framing, etc. You could see this page for tips and recommendations. The author says the camera doesn't matter which is right most of the time, but for QI and FP it takes a little more. I hope you keep contributing and get the reward you want from it. But remember Commons is there to illustrate and be usefull to other Wiki-projects and to users, so even if your pictures aren't QI or FP they still can be very usefull and that is a big reward. Finally, I hope you don't feel I'm beeing condescendent because this not at all the point of it. I just started photography and just like you I see that it is a big challenge to get the reward we think we deserve. But the more we take pictures, the better we get, so don't give up. And don't be ashamed to ask others or to go out and read books about photography, there are many good ones out there. Have a good day, friendly, --Letartean (talk) 20:04, 3 May 2010 (UTC)

Appropriate categories[edit]

Thansk for uploading your images - I have come across a couple of interesting ones. However, they all have too many categories.

The categories in Wikipedia are linked in a hierarchy, so just put use the lowest ones that are appropriate to your images. For example, "rolling stock in the United Kingdom" is a sub-category of "rolling stock". Someone looking for UK trains would look in the lower one, not the higher one; someone who starts at the higher one can browse down to the lower one. Most catgeories with "by" in the title are only used for grouping similar categories, so your should never upload a file to ones such as "rolling stock by country".

Take the time to look through Commons:Categories to get an idea of how this works. Geof Sheppard (talk) 07:56, 4 May 2010 (UTC)

Ah you're right[edit]

Sorry if that could have caused problems, is it better if I uppercase the Y? I think your italics create a nice appearance. I am kind of liking how the upper right of the T's bar touches the upper left bar of the Y, almost looks like a kanji! TY (talk) 09:19, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

 • Ah well, I'm not sure if it's actually a kanji, I haven't studied them, I figured might be similar but not exact replicate. Also yes, the pronunciation is identical except for the middle syllable being like 'see' instead of 'len'. How about this: TY© (talk) 09:27, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

two things (your DR spamming, your sig)[edit]

Hi Tyw7,

first: please cease spamming of deletion requests. This is disrupting. Let us find a consensus an policy discussion first. That's too much wasting time to discuss the same thing again and again in every DR.

second: I would appreciate it if could you shorten your signature a bit and remove those interwiki links. That's disturbing to be suddenly at en.wiki. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 13:07, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

Also AGF which means assume good faith is generally desirable. You seemed to misunderstand the term in one of the DR's. - Stillwaterising (talk) 02:06, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

DR spamming[edit]

You have opened two DR's on images that had DR's that closed as keep just 5 days ago. You've been warned for DR spamming before. These are bad faith nominations and will lead to sanction if you continue. -Nard the Bard 07:33, 24 May 2010 (UTC)

Deletion requests on Commons[edit]

You're starting to be very annoying ! It would be good if you could respect both Commons rules and decisions made by the community. You can't launch a DR just some few days after the decision has been done to keep the concerned file. You have to respect that ! Such an attitude is unacceptable.
Another thing : when you wrote "on the behalf", you could at least have mentionned the name of that user (or its IP if it wasn't a registered user). You can also use the unsigned template. Regards. --TwoWings * to talk or not to talk... 09:32, 24 May 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Doxey_Marshes.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the OTRS system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. (You can get a list of all your uploaded files using the Gallery tool.) Re: File:Bigben.JPG[edit]

Hi, I've uploaded a new version that fixes the tilt. One other problem is that it appears to be falling backwards, however, this can be easily fixed (I am not quite good enough with my image editor to do this). However, the glare I am not sure is fixable. You see, Big Ben is nearly silhouetted because of the bright clouds behind it. This makes it very difficult to get a decently bright Big Ben and a not washed out cloud cover behind it. There also appear to be several smudges that maybe can be fixed by someone else. The fact is, this is a very difficult shooting situation. Good try though. Smile --The High Fin Sperm Whale 03:32, 17 March 2011 (UTC)

Yes, that is a problem with almost all tall objects. It is easily fixed by enlarging the top part to compensate, but I'm not sure how to do this with GIMP. The car roofs and obstructions on the bottom can (and have been) easily cropped off. As for the other edits, try asking some of the active people on MOP. I think many of them are very good with editors. --The High Fin Sperm Whale 21:33, 17 March 2011 (UTC)

Get a better camera[edit]

Hey Tyw7,

Looking through your photos, it seems you have an intuitive grasp of photography (and get to go to a lot of cool places), but your cell phone camera simply lacks the sharpness necessary to produce a high-quality image. I highly recommend that you get a better camera; even a point-and-shoot is miles better. If money is an issue, get a Canon SD1300 for about $150 on Amazon. If your really, really squeezed, get a Canon A490 for just $75. If you're loaded, consider the Nikon D3100, Nikon D7000, or basically any other DSLR (digital single-reflex camera) from Nikon or Canon.
