Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.

I noticed that licensing information for Image:South_Africa_Districts_showing_Thabo.png appears twice and the creative commons information is different. Would you mind removing one of the licensing templates two avoid confusion? Thanks. Mikm 14:50, 21 January 2007 (UTC) Done --Waynedam 20:42, 6 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Languages of South Africa[edit]

Hallo Waynedam, in descriptions of the languages it can be read, that the difference between North Sotho an South Sotho is rather a question of different orthographies than of different spoken language. Why don't you demonstrate similarty with similar colours and large differences with differnt colours. On my question about mutual understanding, a Sotho-speaking user of en.wiki told me, that speakers of all the main Bantu languages of South Africa besides Venda and Tsonga can understand each other without a dictionary. Yours' Sincerely --Ulamm 18:28, 8 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

My understanding (and I'm no linguist) is that the Sotho family languages (Northern, Southern and Tswana) are quite distinct whereas the Nguni languages (Zulu, Xhosa, Swati and isiNdebele) are more like dialects (suffering from the languages are dialects with borders problem). Agreed Venda and Tsonga are different. --41.241.215.194 21:28, 11 December 2007 (UTC) Please give me a link to the the map you are referring to as I've done many (I'll try and find it nonetheless).[reply]
That is the Image: Image:South Africa municipalities by language 2001.png.
And that is my Source: www.ethnologue.com on South Sotho. Remark: South Sotho is also called Sotho, and North Sotho is also called Pedi, though not all North Sotho dialects are Pedi, perhaps.--Ulamm 00:45, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Pedi is dialect of North Sotho and yes South Sotho is somethimes just called Sotho. If you like the Sotho languages are like Danish Norwegian and Swedish. Sotho and Nguni are still quite distinct and not generally understandable by a native speaker of the other (many, especially in urban areas have knowledge of/exposure to both groups - and rarely to Venda or Tsonga). It certainly isn't just an issue of orthography. On the map - I used different colours so as to make the lighter shades distinct (especially for neigbouring languages). --41.243.115.111 17:31, 15 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
If you see maps of European languages, typically the Romanic languages are marked in similar languages (in Greman maps mostly bluish), the Germanic languages are marked in similar colures (in german maps mostly reddish), and the Slavic languages are also marked in similar colours, too (in German maps mostly greenish). So my suggestion is to do it with the South African languages in a similar way: One group of similar colours for the Nguni languages, another group for the Sotho-Tswana languages, more different colours for the more diffent langiages. I've tried something like that in Image:Nigeria Benin Cameroon languages.png.--Ulamm 01:38, 16 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
