Hello, Wittylama!
Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

ABC videos[edit]

Hi,

Thanks for your message on frwp. Why not having those ABC videos subtitled in English, it could help translating and spreading those in the non English speaking world. It's just an idea. --Coyau (talk) 15:02, 3 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

This message was added automatically by Nikbot, if you need some help about it please read the text above again and follow the links in it, if you still need help ask at the ? Commons:Help desk in any language you like to use. --Nikbot 10:24, 2 December 2012 (UTC)

File:Photography sign in Seattle Art Museum.jpg[edit]

Commons-emblem-issue.svg
File:Photography sign in Seattle Art Museum.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

GLAMwiki toolset[edit]

Hi Wittylama,

Congratulations on becoming a user of the GLAMwiki Toolset. You can find some frequently asked questions and helpful links for using the tool at GLAMwiki Toolset. As your first step, please add yourself to the list of users at GWToolset users and follow the good practice of creating pages explaining your new projects, as these can help create a focus for our wider community of volunteers. A standard place to set up a project page is at Batch uploading, though long term GLAM programmes may fall under GLAM. To discuss the tool with fellow users, please join the email list GLAMtools or try chatting at #wikimedia-commons webchat. SteinsplitterBot (talk) 11:25, 27 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Seaforth Highlanders 1914 "CUIDICH N RIGH" Cap Badge.jpeg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Thanks for pointing this one out to me Ju. I have now added the license information. As you can see at the tracking page for the batch upload, Commons:Europeana/Europeana 1914-1918 batch upload, there were a few items which failed to include the license information when I was preparing the metadata. I identified them and, as they upload, I am adding the license tags and marking them off my spreadsheet. Wittylama (talk) 21:14, 13 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, thx for fixing it. I'm currently checking for recent files without a license. You will likely get some more noticed from me. regards. --JuTa 21:23, 13 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
hey, Ju you weren't kidding! :-) I've now also fixed all the other ones that you've marked below. Wittylama (talk) 21:31, 13 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Commons:Deletion requests/File:Europeana 1914-1918.png[edit]

Hi,

The DR is closed so I want to point a few things out. Logo's are often not covered by licensing statements on websites. One of the reasons could be that licensing a logo under a cc-license can effect your "trademark-rights". Secondly, I don't agree that the file should have been speedy deleted but you can't blame the deleting admin when GLAM-people don't do their homework properly. This includes making sure that the copyright status of files is clear and this includes identifying accounts properly. This file violated Commons policy for more than a year. I expect a certain level of profesionality from GLAM-people and once more this level was not reached. Natuur12 (talk) 14:19, 17 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you.

File:280 visualisation.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. Reminder: Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2016 is open![edit]

POTY barnstar.svg

You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2016 Picture of the Year contest.

Dear Wittylama,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2016 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eleventh edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2016) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1475 candidate images. There are 58 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category.

In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 20 April 2017, 23:59:59 UTC.

Europeana Fashion[edit]

Per Commons:Village_pump/Copyright/Archive/2017/06#More_Europeana_queries, could you provide an update on why Europeana has not fixed these watermarked images in the last 6 months? Thanks -- (talk) 17:06, 7 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

As mentioned six months ago. These files were uploaded by a separate consortium within the context of a specific semi-independent project, now concluded, that used the Europeana brand. That project has now concluded and its work has been integrated into the whole of the 'main' Europeana. The result is of course that different materials coming from different places, with different input agreements/MoU's, appear in the same place with the same ostensible branding. The British Museum[edit]

Hello 👋🏻 Wittylama,

Could you by any chance convince the Department of Coins and Medals of the British Museum to donate scans of their entire collection and their literature (books in the public domain and recent publications). I heard/read that you were their Wikimedian-in-residence, maybe as they're already familiar with you they could work with you or their current Wikimedian-in-residence. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 18:12, 29 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Donald Trung, I've not worked at/with the British Museum since 2010, so anyone I knew there would probably be in a different role now. I did try to get them to make photo donations of their objects but this was shot-down by the marketing department for all the usual reasons why museums are scared to release copyright in their digitisations of collection objects. A great pity at the time, and I don't believe anything has changed at the policy-level since then. Wittylama (talk) 09:10, 2 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Ohhh, that's really unfortunate, it's really sad that an institution created to preserve knowledge wants to water down its mission because of profitability. Honestly I'm trying to make Wikimedia Commons into "the biggest Chinese numismatics museum" so yeah, I kind of have a conflict with that. Anyhow thanks for the response and let's hope that they'll change their copyright © soon. Something I always try when I try ro convince people to donate their images to Wikimedia Commons is calling it "free advertising" especially with online shops I just tell them "people will see links to your shop rather than your competitors" maybe this will work with museums too. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 09:20, 2 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Expiry of GWToolset user group memberships[edit]

There is a proposal on the Bureaucrat's noticeboard to automatically expire GWT memberships after one year unless the user requests an extension. Please add your views and suggestions to the discussion. The reasonably informal process for getting access to GWT access will remain as is.

Important message for file movers[edit]

Commons File mover.svg

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

 • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
 • To perform file name swaps.
 • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks![edit]

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!
