Removal of File:BSicon fSTRl~R.svg

[edit]

Hi, you have removed File:BSicon fSTRl~R.svg as duplicate of File:BSicon fSTRl+4h.svg but they were not the same. The curve is different. Just compare the existing File:BSicon STRl~R.svg and File:BSicon STRl+4h. They are different and they both exist. RodrigoTavares (talk) 22:27, 15 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hello @RodrigoTavares. @Useddenim: tagged the file as duplicate. I couldn't find any difference between the files, or have I actually overlooked something? I've restored it. Let's take another look. זיו「Ziv」For love letters and other notes 22:45, 15 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

Exact duplicate deleted

[edit]

Hi. I have just recently started nominating exact duplicates for speedy deletion and I am not sure how you decide which copy to delete. I nominated File:Auckland CBD - 23158240840.jpg for deletion but you deleted the other copy, which I didn't realise was going to happen. I'm fairly sure I added a much improved 'Description' to the copy you deleted. Could you please check, and copy the 'Description' to File:Auckland CBD - 23158240840.jpg. Thanks. In future I will add info to both duplicates to avoid this happening again. Thanks again. Nurg (talk) 21:21, 19 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Nurg: . It's quite simple. In this case, we always delete the smaller file. The file has 5644 x 4000 pixels, while the deleted one only had 2048 x 1451. If they are identical, then the newer upload is deleted. Regards, זיו「Ziv」For love letters and other notes 02:38, 20 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
We have the same problem with other files you've tagged, where you prefer to keep the smaller copy. זיו「Ziv」For love letters and other notes 02:52, 20 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
I see, thanks. However, what you are saying contradicts Commons:Criteria for speedy deletion#F8, which indicates that the primary consideration is the age of the file, secondly user uploaded vs bot uploaded, and thirdly "very large files", not just larger files. If what you are saying is correct, could you please amend Commons:Criteria for speedy deletion#F8. That would help users like me to understand, and to do things right the first time. Thanks. Nurg (talk) 03:01, 20 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much. Yes, I forgot to mention that, sorry. But now that you know how to do it correctly, you can tag the files properly. Best regards, זיו「Ziv」For love letters and other notes 03:54, 20 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Actually, I am now confused. I don't know whether to follow Commons:Criteria for speedy deletion#F8 or what you say. Nurg (talk) 06:39, 20 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
To follow the criteria under F8. זיו「Ziv」For love letters and other notes 06:46, 20 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Oh, ok, thank you. Nurg (talk) 06:49, 20 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Your‘e welcome @Nurg. It's really not that difficult. Before we merge a file, the admins can compare both files in a new window to identify any differences. Sometimes it's just the size, but especially with older black and white images, it often happens that they have different shades of gray. In this case, we keep both files. זיו「Ziv」For love letters and other notes 08:06, 20 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

Re: File:Wang Fuk Court2025Nov 02.jpg file renaming request

[edit]

Hello, thank you for handling the request. The reason I suggest renaming is that "Nov02" could be misunderstood as the photo being taken on Nov 2, rather than the actual shooting date, Nov 25. You can also refer to this relevant discussion on enwiki. SCP-2000 04:23, 27 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hello @SCP-2000
And why don't you make better suggestions in this regard? Simply putting a number between two parentheses is just COM:FRNOT Criteria 1. If the number causes confusion, then a complete date would be the best choice. By the way, I actually rejected both renaming requests Special:Diff/1121919291, but it seems two user were working on it at the same time, and consequently the file was renamed after all. Regarding the deletion of File:Osamu_Tezuka_with_Gene_Pelc.jpg and File:Gene_Pelc_and_Stan_Lee_1978.jpg

[edit]

The photographs are original works by Gene Pelc, who owns the negatives and original prints. They were provided to Gordon Campbell for his Medium article, but copyright was never transferred.

Formal permission for hosting on Wikimedia Commons under CC BY 4.0 has been sent to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org and logged as VRT ticket 2025121110029915. An undeletion request has been filed, and I would appreciate restoration once the ticket is reviewed.

Mr. Pelc has sent a formal permission email to permissions from his official business account. He has a larger archival contribution documenting Japanese–American comics history. This discourages him from sharing more photos, so we hope it can be quickly resolved. Once this ticket is processed, these files will meet Commons licensing requirements. Pelcjp (talk) 12:27, 11 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hello @Pelcjp
Thank you for the information. If the ticket is approved, you don't need to do anything further; the files will be restored automatically. But this may take some days, because the VRT team are all volunteers. Regards, זיו「Ziv」For love letters and other notes 12:55, 11 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the clarification and quick response.
I appreciate that the VRT team are volunteers and understand that review may take some time. I do want to note, however, that it is disheartening to see historically significant photographs taken down so quickly, especially when the materials come directly from our family and the original copyright holder.
I hope future contributors with personal archives will not face the same discouragement. We do not want to go through this stress again and may give up on sharing our personal photos, which document many important moments in Gene’s career in comics and animation.
I will await confirmation from the VRT team under ticket 2025121110029915 and appreciate your help in ensuring these materials are restored once verified.
Kind Regards,
The Pelc Family (on behalf of Gene) Pelcjp (talk) 13:07, 11 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

[edit]

Hi. I uploaded a photo and I have indicated the website where I obtained it. I would like to ensure that it is not deleted. Other photos I uploaded were removed even though I included the source website. Could someone please advise what additional information or steps I need to take to comply with Wikimedia Commons rules and keep the file? Thank you very much for your help! Murughvi (talk) 12:52, 27 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hello @Murughvi
The problem with these websites was that the images there are protected by copyright. The vast majority of images found on the internet are copyright-protected and may ✘ not be uploaded. The fact that an image has been posted to a publicly-available website does not give you implied permission to re-use it nor to upload it here, even if you add the source and author of the image to the description. Many websites are silent on copyright issues, but images on those sites are just as off-limits as those on sites which explicitly say "Copyright, all rights reserved". Works are copyrighted by default in most countries due to their agreement with the Berne Convention; a copyright notice or a © sign is not needed. However, there are plenty of websites on the internet that offer images under free licenses. Even better is if you take pictures with your phone or camera yourself. Of course, it is also possible to ask an original author of a protected work for permission to make it available under a free license. However, the original author must then send their consent to Commons via COM:VRT, where it will then be stored in the system. I hope this helps you, but feel free to ask me more. Neubenennung der Zürcher Wappen?

[edit]

Viele Grüsse, זיו「Ziv」For love letters and other notes 13:16, 6 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Aha. Ich war nicht vertraut mit diesem Kriterium 1. Also warten wir darauf, was Gerhard meint!

Beste Grüsse, זיו「Ziv」For love letters and other notes 17:00, 16 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Ziv: @Gerhard Bräunlich: Ich werde mich der Sache annehmen. ARK (talk) 20:25, 16 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Besten Dank! זיו「Ziv」For love letters and other notes 20:54, 16 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
ARK (talk) 20:11, 24 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Sali @ARK
Äusserst interessant, was du alles herausgefunden hast. Ich selbst habe Geduld ohne Ende. Schönes Wochenende. זיו「Ziv」For love letters and other notes 20:27, 24 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
ARK (talk) 19:38, 7 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Renamed files on brwiki

[edit]

Hello,

I noticed that you make numerous changes on brwiki because files were renamed on Commons. I just wanted to check: are there any issues with CommonsDelinker? AFAIK it should be able to do this job. It does have the bot status and is not blocked. Or is there a particular reason not to use it? Huñvreüs (talk) 13:58, 14 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello @Huñvreüs
Yes, Delinker isn't working properly at the moment and isn't doing its job. The list is quite long, see at User:CommonsDelinker/commands. Nevertheless, there's nothing wrong with manually replacing the filenames in the language versions by someone else. Renaming Commons files

[edit]

Hey Ziv!

I'm a patroller and contributor on frwikt. I saw you on our patrol tool and first and foremost thank you!

I originally came to ask why what you do isn't automated, but i read the question above this one and got my reply.

Considering you are doing this job manually, what page do you check for renames? Do you need help? I don't contribute on commons, so judging how tedious and annoying what you're doing can be is difficult for me. If you'd need help, I'd gladly help :D

Thanks again from a Swiss colleague :>, CKali (talk) 13:53, 15 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hey Swiss colleague @CKali
You're right, it's actually an automated process. For minor changes with less than 50 languages versions using the file, the script handles it under my name; for more, it writes a command for CommonsDelinker, which then does the job. Basically, it's not a problem if a filename isn't changed immediately, as long as the redirect created for it isn't deleted. I'm only doing it because I have some time right now and it allows me to make a few edits in different language versions.
If you want to help, sure you can. However, it takes some practice at the beginning, and here's the easiest way to do it:
Go to User:CommonsDelinker/commands. There you can see the old and new filenames in the list. As an example: Replace File:N2403s.jpg (LU,GU), klick on GU. You will now see a list of which language versions still use the old file name. Mark old file name with CTRL + F N2403s.jpg so that the old name appears in the tab below. Now click on the image or, ideally, open it in a new tab. Then select the new filename NGC2403 Galaxy from the Mount Lemmon SkyCenter Schulman Telescope courtesy Adam Block.jpg and copy it using CTRL + C. Now open the language version where you want to change the name, like the french one with Modifier le code. CTRL + F again and search with the cursor in the tab. Then CTRL + V, enter as resume → File has been renamed on Commons ([[:c:GR]]) (copy this, it contains a link, thus creating a backlink to Commons explaining why the filename was changed) and safe the page, thats all.
If it's too complicated for you, that's okay, just leave it, it's not that important. Best regards, זיו「Ziv」For love letters and other notes 15:05, 15 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi Ziv, could you please take a look at this DR? I'm inclined to comply (delete). But eventually a female view might be more relevant in this case. --Túrelio (talk) 10:52, 17 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Mache ich doch gerne. Beste Grüsse, זיו「Ziv」For love letters and other notes 10:55, 17 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
זיו「Ziv」For love letters and other notes 11:07, 17 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

[edit]

Hi Ziv,

I see you've marked many of my images as potential copyright violations because they contain fb metadata. I was not aware that they contain that, but regardless, it is my original work. However, why have the images all been deleted immediately without allowing me to respond to the claims? I wanted to check the metadata on the images myself and see what was there before I could rectify. Deadly437 (talk) 11:19, 18 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello @Deadly437
Facebook metadata usually indicates that the image was uploaded to Facebook or Instagram, downloaded from there, and then subsequently uploaded here. Therefore, you must be able to prove that these are your own works. Even better, always upload images in their original size, in high resolution, and with the original EXIF data from your camera or smartphone. Of course, you have the right to request the restoration of the images; please do so on COM:UNDEL. However, they will also inform you there that you must prove you are the original author of the images and will likewise recommend that you upload the original images to Commons. Another option would be to include a link to your Facebook/Instagram in the image description and you add a note to the respective Facebook/Instagram posts stating that you are releasing the image under a free license {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}} and that anyone can use it. Example text: I am the creator/author of this image and grant permission to everyone to use the image under the Creative Commons license [https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/deed.en creativecommons.org 4.0]. If you are considering this option, then you should also post the links to Facebook/Instagram in the undeletion request, ideally with the note I suggested above. Furthermore, there is also the possibility that you prove via COM:VRT that you are the author of the images. I hope that helps, Best regards, זיו「Ziv」For love letters and other notes 11:50, 18 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Renaming

[edit]

Hello, you rejected some renaming requests done by me on various files on the basis that "other language versions refer to this as a seal", however the inverse is true as well: Spanish, Italian, Polish, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, and many others do not. I do not understand this logic, but I am not familiar with how renaming works, so am I missing something here?

I also want to note that you rejected File:Chrisanthemum Seal (passport).svg despite there being a clear spelling error, which seems erroneous.

I believe that the renaming criteria that I put forward is still valid - the only reason I could see to decline would be #2, but this isn't true as it is not called a seal on most projects - so is it possible to review or appeal this decision, perhaps? It is probably more sensible to start a discussion on the file's discussion page first, especially when making such changes, particularly if these filenames are older and have not been questioned before. Regards, זיו「Ziv」For love letters and other notes 16:39, 18 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
If it is of interest to you I have started a discussion on three of those pages, although I do not envision that many people will see them unfortunately. NotADev (talk) 20:45, 20 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hello @NotADev.
I didn't see your reply, I'm sorry. To reach more users, you could perhaps start a discussion on COM:VP. It would be interesting to read what others think about it. Regards, זיו「Ziv」For love letters and other notes 20:32, 24 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Image

[edit]

This image was deleted earlier today. Can you point me to the original image that it was cropped from or was this a direct upload? Tying some SPIs together between Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons related to this filing and think I may have found another rabbit hole. CNMall41 (talk) 04:09, 20 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello @CNMall41
No, that wasn't a direct upload, but actually a crop from File:File:Shraddha Kapoor 1.jpg. Original link is the first image with blue background. The Bollywood Hungama license is clear, however; the image is not from an event or party and therefore does not meet the requirements. Thank you very much for the report, I will add something to it. Asking about Wikipedia in vèneto!

[edit]

Hello Ziv, I write here for it looks you are more active in this page. I'm trying to figure out who's editing and managing the Venetian-language Wikipedia so I can help more effectively. No one's been responding lately. Since you write a lot there, do you know if there's a user on the venetan Wikipedia I could ask for information? Thanks in advance! Sinucep (talk) 12:08, 26 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello @Sinucep.
Currently, I only know of @Ciaurlec: , who is the temporary sysop. I've tried to ask him for extended privileges so that I can potentially help mark articles as reviewed. Most of the edits that affect me personally are just filename changes. These don't necessarily need to be reviewed. Is there a specific page on your language version where I could apply for these rights? I couldn't find it. זיו「Ziv」For love letters and other notes 12:21, 26 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
So anche scrivere e parlare italiano; so leggere il dialetto veneto, ma non correggerei gli errori di ortografia. Distinti saluti, זיו「Ziv」For love letters and other notes 12:21, 26 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Gruss CRolker (talk) 20:45, 3 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hallo @CRolker
Beste Grüsse, זיו「Ziv」For love letters and other notes 21:04, 3 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Beste Grüsse, זיו「Ziv」For love letters and other notes 20:53, 5 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Dir ebenso. זיו「Ziv」For love letters and other notes 21:35, 5 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Benutzerantrag

[edit]

Merke (Klammer) zu Kriterium 4: Just because images share a category does not mean that they are part of a set. There are two scenarios that this criterion is designed for. First, certain complex templates (such as those that use BSicons or that display football kits) assume that the images used in them will follow a specific naming convention. Wikisource also uses a specific naming convention for the source files they transcribe. Second, files that form parts of a whole (such as scans from the same book or large images that are divided into smaller portions due to Commons’ upload size restriction) should follow the same naming convention so that they appear together, in order, in categories and lists. Criterion 3

[edit]

COM:FR#3 states it is 'to correct obvious errors in filenames, including misspelled proper nouns, incorrect dates, and misidentified objects or organisms'. I fail to see how File:ApiranaNgata1905.jpg is an 'obvious error' when the source lists his name as such. [5] Traumnovelle (talk) 08:30, 24 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Removal of File:Ilha Marechal Deodoro.jpg‬

[edit]

Hi, Ziv,

I have recently (and inadvertently) included in Wikimedia Commons a localization map taken from Google Maps. The image name was "Mapa do Rio Grande do Sul com a localização da ilha na Lagoa dos Patos" (Map of Rio Grande do Sul showing the island's location in Lagoa dos Patos). This image was included in the article pt:Ilha Marechal Deodoro of Wiki.pt. My first attempt was to generate a similar image using the resources of the Info/Island Infobox, but it didn't work as expected.

The Google Maps image was soon after (and properly) removed by you from Commons, for copyright violation. Since a localization map is important for the article, my idea now is to use and credit, instead, an image taken from OpenStreetMap, whose content, as stated on their website, is "Open data: you are free to use it for any purpose as long as you credit OpenStreetMap and its contributors". Before doint it, though, I would very much appreciate if you could confirm my understanding that this would be in accordance with the Commons criteria.

I thank you in advance for the support. Antonio Prates (talk) 05:41, 1 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello @Antonio Prates.
You can take a look at further examples under Category:ODbL OpenStreetMap to see what it should look like and how it should be correctly licensed. Best regards, זיו「Ziv」For love letters and other notes 05:55, 1 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hi @Ziv
Thanks for your prompt response! I'll check the Category and take care to follow the licensing criteria.
Cheers. Antonio Prates (talk) 06:19, 1 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello Ziv. Thank you for the redirection: I didn't remember that this image had already been uploaded with another file name. Best regards, Arcyon (discuter) 09:18, 4 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
