Location?
[edit]Hi Nosferattus - could you add some location details of where you took File:Suet feeder with three birds.jpg, please? It will help with identification and adding the right categories, and make the photo more useful. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 13:20, 21 September 2021 (UTC)
- Would still appreciate some follow-up on this please! The location is necessary for identification as to whether it is a Black-capped Chickadee, or a Carolina Chickadee. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 21:17, 17 October 2022 (UTC)
- @MPF: The location is in the overlap zone between Black-capped Chickadees and Carolina Chickadees, which is why the bird isn't identified more specifically. Nosferattus (talk) 23:39, 17 October 2022 (UTC)

Deletion requests post-mortem
[edit]Well, Yann closed the deletion requests before I finished writing my latest reply. Writing it took quite a while, because I was reading through various documents by the Copyright Office and even found a SCOTUS opinion that explicitly mentions the level of creativity needed for copyright ("extremely low; even a slight amount will suffice"). The main problem is that the most relevant guidelines (chapter 906.8) only speak of "sufficient human interaction", but don't specify what's "sufficient". Anyway, it was nice having a discussion with you! :) TilmannR (talk) 21:36, 5 June 2022 (UTC)
- @TilmannR: As an interesting postscript, the United Kingdom, unlike most other countries, does provide copyright protection for works generated by AIs, but the term of protection is shorter: 50 years from the date of creation. The copyright belongs to "the person by whom the arrangements necessary for the creation of the work are undertaken", in other words, the prompt writer.[1] It's also interesting that they note the tension between 'creator' and 'author': "The creator of the original work is the AI, but the 'author' under the law is a person who has not made any creative input to it. This sits uneasily with the modern approach to originality in wider copyright law, where creativity and authorship go hand-in-hand." Nosferattus (talk) 23:34, 5 June 2022 (UTC)
Welcome, Dear Filemover!
[edit]
Hi Nosferattus, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:
- Use the CommonsDelinker link in the {{Rename}} template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
- Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
- Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

[edit]Hi, You mentioned here the availibility of audio recording. However I only get a register form, and I can't manage to register. Thanks, Yann (talk) 09:59, 8 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Yann: The site is very Javascript-heavy and doesn't work in some browsers. Try it in Chrome and see if that helps. Nosferattus (talk) 01:41, 9 July 2022 (UTC)
- I managed to upload one file from i78s: File:Lucille Hegamin - Getting Old Blues.mp3. This website is one of the worst I have seen. It is impossible to copy description of the recordings, so they have to be typed manually. :(( It would be a great improvement for music enthusiasts if we could copy all what is in the public domain to Commons. However that probably demands heavy script and bot work. Regards, Yann (talk) 10:21, 4 August 2022 (UTC)
"Make working with templates easier" - what is the final impact?
[edit]Hi, Nosferattus!
This is Timur Vorkul from the Technical Wishes Team at Wikimedia Germany.
I'm writing you because you have provided feedback on features developed in the “Make working with templates easier” focus area, more specifically on the bracket matching feature.
The work on this focus area is slowly coming to an end, and therefore I would like to talk about it in an article on the Wikimedia Germany's website. I would like to shed light on the technical changes we have implemented in the wikis together with the volunteers and more importantly how does the final impact on the active contributors look like. In that, I would like to ask you for your support.
I would appreciate it if you could take a few minutes to recall what has been done in the “templates” focus area and to answer the following question:
How has one or more of the changes impacted your workflow or your contribution to the wiki?
I would like to use your answer either as a quote or as background material for the article. Of course, you are free to choose whether you want to be mentioned by your username or anonymized. If it's easier for you to send an audio or a screen recording instead of a written answer, I would be delighted about that as well.
If you have any questions or comments, please contact me at timur.vorkul@wikimedia.de Thanks! Timur Vorkul (WMDE) (talk) 08:30, 15 July 2022 (UTC)

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2022 voting is open!
[edit]Read this message in your language
Dear Wikimedian,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 1 will end on UTC.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

File:Pexels Lerkrat Tangsri 91147.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added may soon be deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please replace the copyvio tag with {{subst:OP}} and have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you disagree that the file is a copyright violation for any other reason, please replace the copyvio tag with a regular deletion request.

File:Triton2 altcrop.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

The Diliff / Pixsy / attribution situation
[edit]Hi - I'm writing to you because you were the first to pick up on the Diliff case I raised. You advocated deletion of his images, but the discussion went on to how to prevent copyright trolling, how to get more contributors using CC4, and how to warn the users of photos by the likes of Diliff that there was a risk of being sued.
It's amazing the amount of discussion that's been generated, and I'm sure it all needed to come out but it gets very confusing trying to follow it across multiple pages, so I wondered what's your feeling for where we've got to? As far as I can see deleting his photos was outvoted as being bad for Wikipedia, the discussion on getting people to move to CC4 is waiting for some legal conversation, and the labelling of Diliff's photos with a warning seems to have been started but not finished.
Being new to this I don't have any knowledge of the status of people involved in this discussion - are they all admins (are you?) or a mixture of admins and users. If there are things to do, like labelling Diliff's photos, who does that? I can see that a lot of people are still unhappy with Diliff's viewpoint on it, and in particular with the behaviour of Pixsy but I don't see any more suggestions.
Anyway I wanted to thank you for taking it seriously and I'm sure in the long run this discussion will benefit everyone. Normanlamont (talk) 15:03, 17 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Normanlamont: For the most part, I don't think your concerns are being taken seriously enough. The problem is that most of the people taking part in these discussions are photographers, not reusers. So they are only looking at it from that point of view. As someone directly affected by copyright trolling, you have a powerful voice in these discussions and I would encourage you to keep using it, especially in the discussions about possible solutions, which you are more that welcome to participate and vote in: Commons:Village pump/Proposals#Prohibit copyleft trolling. Nosferattus (talk) 16:13, 20 April 2024 (UTC)
- I’ve added something to the possible solutions page. Hope I haven’t overdone it. 77.97.243.14 14:33, 24 April 2024 (UTC)
